2 SERIES BREAKDOWN HISTORY Detroit leads 1-0 CAMPUS CONNECTION Bo Zeigler went to Community High School in Detroit and is the Bulls only player from Michigan. Detroit has three players on its roster from Detroit and nine total from the state of Michigan. Detroit assistant coach Ernie Zeigler spent the season at Pittsburgh, the year before USF head coach Orlando Antigua began working under Jamie Dixon at the school. Ernie Zeigler is also the uncle of USF s Bo Zeigler. Ernie is in his first season as an assistant coach. GAME-BY-GAME 11/30/13 (H) L ALABAMA 82 - USF 71 QUICK NOTES Corey Allen Jr. led the Bulls with 16 points. USF outshot Alabama from the field, 50.0 percent to 42.9 percent. The Bulls shot a season-best 50.0 percent from 3-point range. Nehemias Morillo was 4-of-5 from 3-point range. USF got into foul trouble early in the game and Corey Allen Jr. and Nehemias Morillo both fouled out. USF s nine steals was a season high. Freshman guard Jake Bodway attempted his first-career shot, a three, and made it. He finished with five points on 2-of-2 shooting in three minutes of play. Dre Clayton made his first-career 3-pointer. Alabama s largest lead was 19 with 9:10 to play in the game. As they have all season, the Bulls fought back. QUOTE TO NOTE They were fighting for 40 minutes, so no lead was safe. - Alabama head coach Anthony Grant on the Bulls CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Corey Allen Jr. averaged 23.5 points in USF s wins over Hofstra and Jacksonville and was named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week on Dec. 1. Allen Jr. scored a career-high 29 points, the most by a USF player since Victor Rudd scored 30 on Nov. 14, 2011 vs. Marist. USF trailed by 19, its largest margin of the game, with 6:56 to play at Alabama. The Bulls went on a 16-6 run over the next 2:58 to cut the Crimson Tide lead to eight points, with 3:58 to play. USF lost the game KENTUCKY S ONLY LOSS No. 1 ranked Kentucky has not lost this season and some experts say they never will. However, the only blemish for the Wildcats came in August when Orlando Antigua s Dominican Republic national team defeated UK Antigua was an assistant with Kentucky the previous five seasons and has helped recruit much of the Wildcats current roster. CONFERENCE HONOR ROLL Chris Perry was awarded for his efforts by being one of five named to the American Athletic Conference Honor Roll on Nov. 17. Perry averaged 19.5 points and 8.5 rebounds to help USF to a 2-0 record with wins over Flagler (75-61) and Jackson State (73-64). In the win over Jackson State, Perry scored a career-high 21 points and added 10 rebounds for his third career doubledouble. EARLY SIGNING DAY USF was busy during the early signing period and signed three to national letters of intent including two four-star prospects. Tulio Da Silva is a 6-8, 200-pound forward from Brazil and is currently playing at Arlington Country Day High School in Jacksonville, Fla. Da Silva is one of the most unknown players in the country, but was given a four-star rating by ESPN.com. RESILIENT BULLS The coach is in his first year as head coach at the college level, the team has the second fewest years of Division I experience and the Bulls continue to show their toughness and resilience. Here are the examples. USF had a three-point lead, 61-58, with 54 seconds to play, on the road at UAB. The Blazers tied the game with seven seconds remaining and the game went into overtime where USF gave Coach Antigua a win in its first opportunity, At NC State, USF trailed by its largest margin of the game, 11 (65-54), with 2:57 to play. The Bulls ended the game on an 11-3 run as a Corey Allen Jr. 44-foot shot missed resulting in a win for the Wolfpack. Against Hofstra, USF trailed by 15 (57-42) with 8:33 to play, its largest margin of the game. 3 DEBUT DOUBLE-DOUBLE Recording a double-double isn t so uncommon, recording one in your career debut is. Nehemias Morillo recorded a double-double in his USF debut on Nov. 14 against Flagler with 13 points and 10 rebounds. The last USF player to record a double-double in his USF debut was McHugh Mattis on Nov. 18, Mattis had 11 points and 15 rebounds in the win over Alcorn State. PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE Junior guard Anthony Collins and sophomore forward Chris Perry were selected to the American Athletic Conference Preseason Second Team. Collins was named to the preseason second team last year and averaged 6.9 points and 5.9 assists in eight games before ending his season short do to a left knee injury. Perry ended last season on the American Athletic Conference All-Rookie Team after averaging 8.9 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. EARLY ATTENTION FOR PERRY Along with being named a member of the American Athletic Conference Preseason Second Team, Chris Perry received has received some early recognition from two prominent sports websites. In September, Sports Illustrated s Luke Winn named Perry one of five Break Out Sophomores for the upcoming season. Winn writes: The 266-pounder could grow into one of the AAC s better forwards in a few years time... The rate at which he produced offense off the bench as a freshman suggests he can handle that role. In early November, CBS Sports Jon Rothstein named Perry one of 20 under-the-radar players. Rothstein writes: Orlando Antigua needs a foundation piece to lean on as he builds the Bulls program and Perry looks to be the guy who fills that void. The 6-8 power forward has a Danny Fortson-like feel to his game. Pencil him in for a double-double as a sophomore. YOUNG BULLS With a coaching change comes roster turnover. Not many teams were affected more with a coaching change than USF. Nine players departed last year s team, two to graduation. USF returned only three, Corey Allen Jr., Anthony Collins and Chris Perry, who played in an NCAA game last season. By that measure, USF is the second youngest team in the country. Only Tennessee State has returned fewer players who played last season with two. USF and Troy are the only teams with three. Among American Athletic Conference schools, USF will be going against much more veteran teams. Team Players with NCAA Experience USF 3 Memphis 7 UCF 7 CONFERENCE CORNER PRESEASON COACHES POLL 1. MAKING HISTORY WITH THE DOMINICAN Orlando Antigua served as head coach of the Dominican Republic men s national team for the second consecutive season and took the squad to unprecedented success this summer. For the first time since 1978, the squad qualified for the FIBA World Cup. After going 2-3 in Group C, the team advanced to the bracket round or roud of 16 for the first time in the country s history. During Antigua s travels, which took up nearly the whole month of June, he made stops in the Bahamas, New York City and Spain which included games in Madrid, Bilbao and Barcelona. Among the highlights was two games against USA, once in Madison Square Garden as an exhibition and once in Bilbao in Group C. Antigua also faced his former employer, Kentucky and mentor, John Calipari in two exhibitions in the Bahamas. One game was an win by Kentucky and the other was a win by the Dominican Republic. It was Antigua s fourth consecutive season with the Dominican Republic, his second as a head coach. The first two seasons he served as an assistant coach while Calipari led the CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Devonta Pollard, Houston (11/17) Ryan Boatright, UConn (11/24) Corey Allen Jr., USF (12/1) CONFERENCE ROOKIE OF THE WEEK B.J. The seven that have been announced on are: Dominican Republic as its head coach. A JUNIOR AGAIN USF received good news in the summer when the NCAA rewarded Anthony Collins with a medical hardship waiver. Collins is a junior this season despite playing in eight games last season, his third with the Bulls. The point guard earned second team all-conference honors last October, months after having surgery to remove an inflamed bursa sac in his right knee. Collins missed the first two games of , but played in the next eight before shutting it down for the remainder of the season because the pain was too much to bear. As per NCAA rules, all of Collins stats from last season are valid, which places him sixth on the school s all-time list with 402 assists. RODDY PETERS Roddy Peters transfered to USF from Maryland and must sit out this season due to NCAA transfer rules. He will be a sophomore next season for the Bulls and have three seasons of eligibility remaining. The 6-3 guard appeared in all 32 games at Maryland last season. He made 10 starts and averaged 15.1 minutes, 4.1 points and 1.3 rebounds per game. Peters was a five-star prospect, the 19th-ranked player overall and the third-ranked point guard by 247Sports coming out of District Heights, Md. Peters practices with the Bulls and often goes against point guard Anthony Collins. Peters has mentioned his goal is to make Anthony Collins the best point guard in the country. SUMMER SUCCESS FOR ALLEN JR. Corey Allen Jr. made a visit to Los Angeles, where he attended Mt. San Antonio College prior to USF, and played in the Drew League while in California. The team he joined, Hanks Houdini s All-Stars, won the whole tournament. In games leading up to the finals, Allen Jr. scored 40 points (15/22 field goals, 9/10 free throws) in an four-overtime win over top-seeded Cheaters in the semifinals. DrewLeague.com had this to say about Allen Jr. s performance that day: Allen drew comparisons to The Answer with his ability to swiftly turn defenders into sand figures before diving in the paint for buckets. For a player not known for his pure shooting, he showed poise and confidence down the stretch from the field and at the line at the end of the fourth and final overtime. WHICH WAY IS THE WEIGHT ROOM? Mike Malone, USF s new strength and conditioning coach, was busy changing the bodies of the Bulls over the summer. Whether the guys gained or lost weight, one thing is certain, the Bulls will be a well conditioned team this winter. Chris Perry will catch the eyes of most fans this season after dropping 24 pounds from his freshman playing weight of 266. His new weight of 242 will allow him to fit in to Antigua s system as Perry now has options as to where he can play on the court. The most notable weight changes of the newcomers has been 6-11 center Ruben Guerrero, who was listed at 210 pounds last season at Sunrise Christian Academy and is now at 225. The multi-purpose venue also has hosted an abundance and variety of other events both internal and external to USF including, but not limited to, commencements, concerts, sports and entertainment events, consumer shows, religious services, conventions, ethnic festivals, rodeos, wrestling, youth sports camps, gymnastics and cheerleading competitions, lectures, and political rallies among other corporate, community and USF events. In June 2011, the USF Board of Trustees approved a $35.6 million major renovation to the 250,000-square-foot Arena including, but not limited to, the complete reconfiguration of the approximately 10,000 seat bowl (to oval bowl seating setting), adding a state-of-the art center hung LED scoreboard, additional concessions and restrooms at the concourse level (by adding a concourse under and throughout the permanent second level seating), modifying and enhancing the southeast and southwest entries, and the restoration of existing exterior concrete amongst other cosmetic improvements. Additionally, the project provided for 10 loge boxes with a total capacity of ~60 seats to be sold by the USF Athletics Department. Basketball loge box holders have the first right of refusal to purchase tickets to other external events (e.g. concerts). The project, which was completed in May 2012, is anticipated to extend the useful life of the Arena for a 30-year time period. Orlando, just three years older than brother Oliver, was the father figure in the three bedroom apartment. He would discipline, cook and protect at the age of 10 in a house of four. On Halloween night in 1988, an argument broke out between some men in his neighborhood outside an electronics store and one of them pulled a gun. A.22 caliber bullet hit Orlando, an innocent bystander, near his left eye. Oliver took the call from the hospital. Due to the bullet s location (it never penetrated the skull), doctors deemed it safer to not to remove the bullet. He was back playing basketball two weeks after the incident. It was extracted during his junior year at Pitt. He still has the bullet and keeps it next to his championship rings. 7 //
