8 Georgia State Basketball - Page GEORGIA STATE LEGEND One of the first stars in Georgia State women s basketball history, Joyce Harrell set high standards for future players to challenge. As a matter of fact, her career rebounding total of 1,051 when she graduated in 1980 has never been equaled. She was the first 1,000-point scorer in school history and is still just one of two players in Georgia State history to have produced 1,000 of each. Georgia State began basketball in and one year later Harrell was recruited to help build the program. And, from , build it she did. During her four-year career with two different coaches, captain Harrell helped the team produce a record (.657) during her tenure. The team enjoyed wins over other founding programs like current SEC schools Georgia, Auburn, Florida and Alabama as well as current ACC schools Georgia Tech, Clemson, Duke and North Carolina. A 6-foot interior player, Harrell was consistent with three years of 11 rebounds per game or better, a career field goal percentage over 50 percent and her 12 points a game scoring average. She was an All-State selection by the Georgia Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (GAIAW), the eight-member league that State belonged to before joining the Sun Belt. Her top scoring game was a 31-point effort and her top rebounding game was a 21-board night. She was drafted in 1980 by the Minnesota Fillies of the Women s Professional League, a forerunner to today s WNBA, but elected to pursue her business career. Harrell graduated with a degree from the Robinson College of Business in informational systems. Currently, she works for EMC 2 in McLean, Va., as the program manager for OCONUS, Special and Large Projects. EMC 2 is the world s leading developer and provider of information infrastructure technology and solutions and is one of the 10 most valued IT companies in the world. Her 25-year business career in the computer industry has seen her travel the world. Currently, she works in the federal division and works with the Armed Services around the world, where her team implemented computer systems for Iraq, Afghanistan, and other areas of the Persian Gulf. She has implemented systems and taught seminars in Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Turkey, Portugal, Japan, Korea, and Guam. She s traveled to most states with her job, including Hawaii and Alaska. In the past four years along, she s logged more than a half million travel miles. The lessons I learned playing college basketball have benefited me throughout my life and business career, Harrell noted. Teamwork, leadership, drive, determination and commitment are all necessary for success in the business world. Georgia State basketball helped teach these skills. I am so thankful for my college degree because it has enabled me to enjoy my career and provided great opportunities to see the world. It is a great honor to be acknowledged again and this CAA Legend Award means a lot to me, she added. Harrell was recognized on Alumni Weekend at Georgia State on Feb at both men s and women s basketball games and presented a commemorative basketball.
