Rice To Face Tennessee In Historic Game On Nov. 15, Rice opens a new era in women s basketball, as the Owls face Tennessee in the Lady Vols first home game since 1973 with someone other than Pat Summitt coaching the team. Holly Warlick, a long-time Summit assistant and player, takes over the helm for the Lady Vols. Summit, one of the legends of collegiate athletics, won six national titles before stepping down after due to her battle with Alzheimer s. Greg Williams has two wins against the Top 25 in his tenure, defeating No. 14 Texas Tech in and No. 10 Texas A&M in Rice has played the No. 24 team in the nation twice, and lost both contests, most recently to UTEP on Feb. 16, Rice vs. the Southeastern Conference The Owls are 1-2 under Greg Williams against schools from the SEC, but have not won a road game against the SEC since a Nov. 22, 1998 win at LSU, losing in the five games since. The Owls lost their last contest against the SEC in 2008 at Mississippi, but beat Mississippi the year prior. Championship Pedigree Rice plays three of the last four schools to win a national championship in , taking on 2007 and 2008 champion Tennessee in this game, 2012 champion Baylor on Nov. 27, and 2011 champion Texas A&M on Jan. 1. Rice does not play UConn, who won the 2009 and 2010 titles. Senior Reward For the second consecutive year, Rice is taking a senior to her hometown to play a non-conference game. D Frantz Smart, currently a student assistant for the Owls, played in front of her family at Chicago State last season, a win for the Owls. The product of Chicago s Whitney Young High School had five assists and eight steals in that game. All of Rice s other seniors since have been from Texas. Playing Into March Since entering C-USA in , Rice has the most postseason appearances of any C-USA school, having reached the postseason in four seasons (2006, 2006, 2011, 2012). Memphis, SMU, and Tulane have reached the postseason three times since , and 11 of the 12 C-USA schools have reached the postseason at least once. Griner Returns To Houston Baylor senior Brittney Griner, a native of Houston, returns home on Nov. 27 with her Bear teammates to take on the Owls at Tudor Fieldhouse. The Nimitz High School graduate was Player of the Year in and Preseason Player of the Year in by every major service. The Bears went 40-0 to win the NCAA Title in , and have not lost a game since the 2011 Regional Final, where the Lady Bears fell to eventual National Champion Texas A&M. Griner has not played in Houston since her senior year of high school. Kuster On Track For 1,000 Jessica Kuster can become the 18th Rice player to reach 1,000 points in a career with 9 more points. Only seven players have reached the 1,000 point plateau in their junior season. Morgan Mayse is the last Rice player to reach 1,000 points, accomplishing the feat in Kuster Named Preseason Player of the Year Rice junior Jessica Kuster was named C-USA Preseason Player of the Year, as voted upon by the league s coaches. The selection is Kuster s second straight appearance on the Preseason All-C-USA Team. Kuster is the first Rice player to be named C-USA Preseason Player of the Year since Lauren Neaves prior to the season. In the same poll, the Owls were picked to finish fourth in the league by a poll of the league s coaches. 2

3 Attendance Record The largest attendance to see Rice women s basketball team play is 13,116 at Texas Tech on Dec. 5, C-USA Changing marks the final year of the current alignment of C-USA, which has not changed since Rice entered the league for C-USA adds Louisiana Tech, Old Dominion, Charlotte, UTSA, FIU and North Texas for Louisiana Tech won the 1982 and 1988 NCAA Championships, and has ten Final Four appearances; Old Dominion won the 1985 NCAA Championship and has three Final Four appearances; Charlotte has made nine consecutive postseason appearances; UTSA has won five conference championships since 2000; FIU has made 12 postseason appearances; and North Texas engineered one of the nation s best turnarounds in Houston, Memphis, SMU and UCF depart C-USA after this season to join the Big East. Owls Face Three Teams In Top 25 Rice has games scheduled against No. 24 Tennessee, No. 1 Baylor and No. 16 Texas A&M in the non-conference portion of its schedule. If the opponents hold their ranking, it will be the first time since that Rice has faced three or more Top 25 schools. Tournament Tested Rice plays seven teams from last season s NCAA Tournament field a total of eight times, and has a total of 11 games against postseason participants from a year ago. Prairie View A&M, Tennessee, UALR, Baylor, McNeese St., Texas A&M, and UTEP reached the NCAA Tournament in Autry Army Rice is since at Tudor Fieldhouse. The Owls went 9-5 in their home building last season. Mama Taj Rice welcomed WNBA standout Taj McWilliams-Franklin to the staff this summer, but she joined the Owls on November 5th, after finishing her season with the Minnesota Lynx, who advanced to the WNBA Finals for a second straight year. McWilliams-Franklin, nicknamed Mama Taj, averaged 8.4 points and 5.4 rebounds, in addition to starting 33 of 34 games for the Western Conference Champions in Moussa Represents Egypt Reem Moussa represented Egypt in the FIBA Africa AfroBasket U18 tournament this summer. She averaged 6.7 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists and had a field goal percentage of.407 for the Egyptians in six games, as they took Bronze, only losing two games in the tournament. 4 Greg Williams Rice Head Coach (Eighth Season at Rice; 20th Overall) Greg Williams, now in his eighth season at his alma mater, has led the Owls to two consecutive postseason appearances, as a Williams-coached team played in its fourth WNIT. A product of Rice s Hanszen College, he has led Rice to two C-USA title games and four postseason appearances in 2006, 2007, 2011 and The Owls advanced to the WBI in 2012, marking their second consecutive trip to the postseason. Rice posted a record, and had Jessica Kuster named to the All-C-USA First Team for the second straight year. In the Owls were led by all-star freshman Kuster, who became only the third-ever freshman to be named to the All-C-USA First Team. Kuster was also named the league s Freshman of the Year. With a young squad, the Owls suffered through a 7-23 season during Freshman guard D Frantz Smart was named to C-USA All-Freshmen team as she led all freshmen in the league in scoring at 10.8 points per game. Smart was also tops in the league in steals with a 2.33 steals per game average and fifth in assists (3.96). In 2008, the Owls tallied a record last season after playing nine games without Valeriya Berezhynska, who was C-USA s top scorer and rebounder in conference games. Berezhynska tallied the program s first career triple-double during a nationally-televised contest at Tulane, was selected by the WNBA s Detroit Shock in April of 2009 and is currently playing professionally. Despite injuries to starters that limited Rice s firepower on both ends of the court, Williams led his squad to an record and a second place C-USA finish during his inaugural campaign in The Owls also earned a trip to the Women s National Invitation Tournament Second Round. Rice followed up with record and another WNIT appearance. The Owls were headlined by two-time All-Conference USA First-Team selection Lauren Neaves, who averaged a double-double in each of Williams first two seasons. Neaves has played professionally in France since leaving Rice. As a player, Williams was a three-year letterman for the Owls under coach Don Knodel in , earning all-southwest Conference honors and the league s Co-MVP in After receiving his Rice degree in physical education in 1970, he immediately joined the men s staff under Knodel, helping the Owls to the 1970 SWC championship as a student coach. After six seasons as an assistant coach and two years in private business, Williams rejoined Knodel as an assistant coach with the Houston Angels in the Women s Professional Basketball League. In the league s first year ( ), the Angels won the league title and Knodel was named Coach of the Year. Williams got his first head coaching position in 1980 with the WBL s Dallas Diamonds, earning the league s Coach of the Year honors in 1981 after leading the team to a runner-up finish. His Diamonds featured legendary Nancy Lieberman and outdrew the NBA s Dallas Mavericks during the WBL Championship series. After two years as a volunteer assistant at SMU, Williams returned to the professional ranks in 1984 as the coach of the new Dallas Diamonds in the Women s American Basketball Association. In his only season with the Diamonds, he led the squad to the WABA title and won his second Coach of the Year award. Williams moved back to Houston in 1985 and returned to the college game when he was named head coach at the University of Houston. Among his accomplishments at UH were a upset of No. 3 Louisiana Tech in and a 22-7 mark during that secured the school s first Top-20 ranking along with a NCAA Tournament appearance. Williams also took home SWC Coach of the Year honors. Williams took the reins at Colorado State University in 1990, leading the Rams to their first NCAA Tournament in 1996 in addition to the school s first Western Athletic Conference championship. He won another Coach of the Year honor that season, adding the WBCA Region Seven award. CSU finished No. 24 in the final USA Today Top 25 coaches poll in 1996 behind WAC Player of the Year Becky Hammon, who finished second in the WNBA MVP voting in 2007 with the San Antonio Silver Stars. The Indiana native s successes on the professional and college level made him a natural fit when the WNBA started play in First, he was an assistant with the Utah Starzz, then added director of scouting duties when he moved to the Detroit Shock in As a Shock assistant coach from , Williams helped lead the team to a (.567) inaugural season record, which was the highest winning percentage by an expansion team in the history of the four major sports-(wnba/nba, NFL, MLB, NHL) to go along with a 1999 WNBA playoff berth. Two years later, Williams became the Shock s head coach and director of player personnel. He was the first person to be a head coach in three different women s professional leagues. Williams selections included Deanna Tweety Nolan and Swin Cash, who were key players as the Shock won the 2003 and 2006 WNBA championships. Nolan earned 2006 WNBA Finals MVP and was a 2007 WNBA All-Defensive Team selection, while Cash was a 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist in Athens. Williams returned to the college ranks in 2003 as an assistant coach at the University of Dayton.
