Iowa State comes to Lincoln hungry for a win after having its 19-game home winning streak snapped by No. 6 Texas A&M on Saturday. The Cyclones, who defeated NU in Ames on Jan. 11, dropped a overtime loss at Colorado after beating the Huskers. Like the Huskers, ISU had the mid-week off a week ago, before dropping a decision to the Big 12-unbeaten Aggies. ISU opened Big 12 play with a road loss at No. 1 Baylor. The Huskers will also be hungry after suffering a road defeat at Kansas State on Saturday. Nebraska shot a season-low 23.5 percent from the field at Bramlage Coliseum, including just 2-for-17 from three-point range. The performance at K-State followed one of Nebraska s best efforts of the season in its last appearance at the Devaney Center. The Huskers improved to 9-1 at home this season with a overtime win over Kansas on Jan. 16. Lindsey Moore, Kaitlyn Burke and Catheryn Redmon all produced career days against the Jayhawks, and the Huskers will need similar efforts to beat the Cyclones. Redmon, a 6-3 senior center from Grand Prairie, Texas, has provided a solid presence inside for the Huskers throughout the season and has stepped up her production in conference play. Redmon, who notched back-to-back double-doubles against Kansas and Kansas State, averaging 13.5 points, 15.5 rebounds, 5.0 blocks and 2.0 steals in the those two contests, is averaging 10.3 points and a Big 12-leading 10.8 rebounds in league play. Iowa State won this season s series opener in Ames on Jan. 11, Kelsey Bolte led the Cyclones with a game-high 22 points, including 7-for-7 shooting in the second half. Redmon Posts Second Straight Double-Double in Loss at KSU Nebraska s offense was never able to get untracked against Kansas State s suffocating defense in a loss at Bramlage Coliseum on Saturday afternoon. Catheryn Redmon led the Huskers with her eighth career double-double and fifth of the season with 12 points, 14 rebounds and five blocked shots. Jordan Hooper added 10 points and seven boards as the only two Huskers to manage double figures. Redmon and Hooper combined for eight of NU s season-low 12 field goals, as the Huskers shot a season-low 23.5 percent (12-51) from the field. NU was also 2-of-17 from three-point range, as the Wildcats outscored the Huskers 30-6 from beyond the arc. Kansas State was led by Brittany Chambers, who led all scorers with 26 points on 10-of-15 shooting, including a 5-of-8 effort from three-point range. Chambers added 11 rebounds and four assists to power the Wildcats. Alina Voronenko was the only other Wildcat in double figures with 11 points off the bench, including a pair of three-pointers. While Chambers hit 10-of-15 shots, the rest of KSU s starters went a combined 7-of-31 in the game and managed just 18 points. The Wildcats hit 35.8 percent (24-67) of their shots, but shot a sizzling 10-of-22 from three-point range. NU outscored KSU, 11-6, at the line. NU also outrebounded the Cats 44-39, but committed 22 turnovers, compared to just eight for KSU. In a low-scoring first half of big runs, Nebraska jumped to a 4-0 lead before Kansas State answered with a 17-0 spurt to take its biggest lead at 17-4 after five straight points from Voronenko. NU answered with a 10-0 run of its own over the next four minutes to trim the KSU margin to with 6:21 left in the half. Kansas State then ended a five-minute scoring drought with a three-point play from Chambers, starting a 7-0 run to return KSU s cushion to double digits at with 3:46 left. A Chambers three with 1:48 left pushed KSU s edge back to 13 at before Redmon scored with 1:33 left to send NU to the locker room with an 11-point halftime deficit. Redmon, who scored the Huskers final four points of the half, had six points, five rebounds, three blocks and a steal in the opening 20 minutes. In their lowest scoring first half of the season, Nebraska hit just 6-of-25 shots from the field, including just 1-of-5 three-pointers. NU did go 5-of-6 at the free throw line and outrebounded KSU, 23-20, but the Huskers were minus-eight in the turnover department (12-4). K-State hit 5-of-12 three-pointers but shot just 31.4 percent (11-35) overall. Chambers led KSU in the first half with 14 points, five rebounds and two assists. She hit 5-of-7 shots from the field, including 3-of-4 three-pointers. Nebraska cut the lead to 10 to open the second half, but KSU pushed the margin to 19 at with 13:25 left after an 8-0 run and NU was never able to cut the margin to 15 the rest of the way. Scouting The No. 23 Iowa State Cyclones Iowa State comes to Lincoln hungry for a win after dropping back-to-back contests since beating Nebraska, 64-43, in Ames on Jan. 11. Iowa State is coming off a loss to No. 6 Texas A&M on Saturday in Ames, when the Cyclones had their 19-game home winning streak snapped by the Aggies. That loss followed a overtime loss at Colorado on Jan. 15, dropping ISU to 13-5 overall and 1-3 in the Big 12. The lone senior on ISU s 10-player roster, Kelsey Bolte, has led the Cyclones throughout the season. The 6-1 guard from Ida Grove, Iowa, is averaging a team-best 17.3 points, while adding 4.8 boards per contest. She has been even better in Big 12 play, averaging 23.5 points and 5.8 boards per game in league action. One of the nation s most dangerous shooters, Bolte has buried 13-of-23 threes in the Big 12 (56.5 percent) to increase her season average to 47.0 percent (55-117). In the first meeting with the Huskers, Bolte scored a game-high 22 points and drained all seven of her secondhalf field goal attempts, including four three-pointers, to bring Iowa State back from a halftime deficit. She had 25 points and 12 rebounds in the loss to Texas A&M. Junior transfer Lauren Mansfield joins Bolte in the backcourt. The 5-7 point guard from Adelaide, Australia is averaging 8.5 points while ranking among Big 12 leaders with 6.2 assists per contest. Mansfield is also a threat from long range, hitting 19-of-53 of her three-point tries (35.8 percent), but she has hit just one of her last 10 attempts in conference action. Sophomore Anna Prins has been ISU s leader inside. She did play 27 minutes off the bench but went just 3-of-10 from the field. Freshman Hallie Christofferson has been ISU s most consistent starter in the paint, averaging 9.0 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. However, the 6-3 forward has managed just 5.0 points and 3.8 rebounds in Big 12 action. Iowa State has abundant depth inside, as part-time starter Chelsea Poppens has averaged 8.2 points and a team-leading 7.1 rebounds per game while making 10 starts. Fellow sophomore Amanda Zimmerman has played in all 18 games with one start and has averaged 3.8 points and 2.3 rebounds on the year, but has managed just 0.8 points and 0.8 rebounds per game in league action. A collection of guards has also tried to solidify the Iowa State starting five. Freshman Kelsey Harris (3.3 ppg, 1.5 rpg) started against the Huskers in Ames, while junior Chassidy Cole (1.8 ppg, 2.6 rpg) earned the nod in the loss to Texas A&M. Sophomore Jessica Schroll (3.3 ppg, 3.2 rpg) has started nine games, but has not played since the first half of the game with Nebraska, when she suffered a concussion in a collision with Harleen Sidhu. Elly Arganbright (0.8 ppg, 0.2 rpg) is the only Cyclone who has not started at least one game this season. Nebraska leads the all-time series with Iowa State, 40-34, including a sweep of last year s series. Iowa State swept the series from the Huskers in 2009, while NU completed a sweep in Over the last 11 games, Nebraska owns a 6-5 edge in the series. NU has won six of the last seven meetings at the Devaney Center. Hooper Earning Spot Among Big 12 s Best Freshmen Jordan Hooper has made an instant impact on the Nebraska lineup and is an early contender for conference and national freshman honors. The 6-2 forward from Alliance, Neb., is NU s leading scorer and second-leading rebounder with 14.8 points and 6.9 boards per game. Hooper also leads the Huskers with 36 three-pointers, which already ranks second among all freshmen in Nebraska history. In fact, she needs just 10 more threes to match Anna DeForge s school freshman mark of 46 threes set in DeForge went on to be a first-team All-Big 12 selection and a two-time WNBA All-Star, as one of the best three-point shooters in WNBA history. Hooper s 14.8 points per game rank third among all Big 12 freshmen, while her 6.9 rebounds lead all league rookies. Her 36 threes rank fourth among conference freshmen. Among all Big 12 players, Hooper ranks 12th in scoring and 16th in rebounding. Hooper ranks eighth in the league in three-point percentage (39.6) and ninth with 2.0 three-pointers per game. Hooper, a two-time Nebraska High School Player of the Year (2008, 2010), has produced double figures in 14 of her first 18 career games. She owns four 20-point scoring efforts, including a pair of games with 25 points (Houston, UNO). She produced a 22-point effort against Miami, and added her fourth 20-point performance in Nebraska s non-conference finale against Florida A&M on Jan. 2. Hooper reached 100 (six games) and 200 points (13 games) faster than any other freshman in NU history. ReDmon Producing at Career-Best Levels Catheryn Redmon has produced two of the best games of her career in back-to-back contests against Kansas and Kansas State. Redmon averaged 13.5 points, 15.5 rebounds, 5.0 blocks and 2.0 steals against the Jayhawks and Wildcats to increase her season averages to 10.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game. In Big 12 action, Redmon has averaged a double-double with 10.3 points and a Big 12-leading 10.8 rebounds per contest. She also ranks third in the league with 3.0 blocks per game. In her last appearance at the Devaney Center, Redmon scored 15 points and pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds to go along with five blocks and a career-high matching three steals in a career-high 42 minutes in an overtime win over Kansas. At Kansas State on Saturday, Redmon led NU in scoring, rebounds, blocks and steals with 12 points, 14 boards, five blocks and NU s only steal of the game. Nebraska s Roster in Depth No. Player Ht. Moore, a 5-9 sophomore point guard from Covington, Wash., locked up the triple-double with her career-high 10th rebound with 1:07 left in the game. Nebraska Coach Connie Yori subbed in for Moore 10 seconds later, and Moore walked off the court to a standing ovation. Moore, who also finished with a career-high four steals, got all 10 of her rebounds on the defensive end. Moore became the first player in Nebraska men s or women s basketball history to achieve the rare triple-double. NU s most recent near miss came with 15 points, 15 rebounds and nine assists from Keasha Cannon against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Dec. 8, Senior Leader Kelley Struggling with Knee, Foot Injuries Dominique Kelley has battled knee and foot injuries throughout her senior season and has played just eight minutes (Oklahoma, Jan. 8) in the past seven games. The 5-7 guard out of Lincoln Northeast High School was averaging 15.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists before the injuries sidelined her for NU s game with Louisville in Las Vegas on Dec. 20. That snapped a string of 109 straight starts to open her career. Kelley is NU s active scoring leader with 1,107 career points, which ranks 17th on the Huskers all-time chart. An honorable-mention All-Big 12 pick last year, Kelley was honored with the first Big 12 Player-of-the-Week award of her career on Nov less than two months after having knee surgery on Sept. 29. She averaged 23.5 points and 6.5 rebounds in leading NU to wins over Miami (Fla.) and Saint Mary s (Calif.) the previous week. Kelley connected on 24-of-26 of her free throw attempts and hit 57.9 percent (11-of-19) from the field. Kelley erupted for a career-high 25 points while matching her career best of nine rebounds against Miami. She scored 19 of her 25 points in the second period to blow open a close game. She added 22 points versus Saint Mary s. She hit all 13 of her free throw attempts to help Nebraska overcome a four-point deficit with less than three minutes to play, including six consecutive free throws in the final 25 seconds. Kelley owns three 20-point scoring efforts this season to push her career total to six. Her most recent 20-point performance came with team highs of 21 points, six rebounds, six assists and three steals at Indiana on Dec. 5. Hooper Crashing The Boards at Near Record Rate Jordan Hooper has led the Huskers and all Big 12 freshmen on the glass this season by averaging 6.9 rebounds through her first 18 games. The 6-2 forward has flown to the top of the rebounding charts by averaging 8.3 boards per contest over her last 11 contests. She has four double-figure rebounding performances during the stretch, with all four of them coming NU Rookie Rebounders Player (Season) PPG Deb Powell (81-82) 7.6 Angie Miller (83-84) 7.1 Jordan Hooper (10-11) 6.9 Anna DeForge (94-95) 6.9 Sherry Brink (74-75) 6.9 Karen Jennings (89-90) 6.6 Kelsey Griffin (05-06) 6.0 against 2010 postseason qualifiers. Hooper began her rebounding binge with a challenge from senior guard Dominique Kelley, who challenged Hooper to outboard her in every game this season following NU s loss to Indiana on Dec. 5. Hooper responded with 10 rebounds and 14 points for her first career double-double in a win at Creighton on Dec. 8. After producing 11 points and eight rebounds in just 19 minutes against Northern Colorado on Dec. 11, Hooper notched three straight double-figure rebounding efforts at the Duel in the Desert Classic in Las Vegas. She opened the tournament with a career-high 13 rebounds while matching her career best with 25 points against Houston on Dec. 18. She added 10 boards and nine points against Marist, before capping the tournament with her third double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds against Louisville. Although Hooper averaged just 4.9 rebounds per game through the first seven games of her collegiate career, her rebounding success should come as no surprise. She earned her first Big 12 Player-of-the-Week award on Nov. 15, after scoring 15 points and pulling down a team-high six rebounds against Vermont. All seven of the players to score more than Hooper in a debut went on to score at least 1,000 points as Huskers, including each of the top four scorers in school history (Jennings, Ivy, Griffin, Stephens). Hooper Hitting Threes at Record Rate In addition to her impressive scoring and rebounding numbers, Jordan Hooper has been simply scintilating from three-point range through the first 18 games of her Nebraska career. The 6-2 forward has hit 36-of-91 three-point attempts (39.6 percent). Only five Huskers have ever shot 40 percent or better in a season while making 30 or more three-pointers. Comparing Moore s early season production this year to the start of her freshman season presents a striking contrast. Last season, it took Moore all 34 games to reach 200 total points and 24 three-pointers. Moore began to expand her offensive role gradually throughout the season. She produced double figures just two times in the first 19 games, but had seven double-figure efforts in NU s final 15 contests. Moore Takes on Role of Iron Woman for Huskers In addition to nearly doubling her scoring and rebounding numbers from a year ago, Lindsey Moore has also taken on the role of an iron woman in the Husker lineup. With injuries to two of NU s most experienced guards - Dominique Kelley and Layne Reeves - Moore has hardly come off the floor this season. In fact, she ranks second in the Big 12 with 36.3 minutes per game, trailing only Missouri s RaeShara Brown (36.6 mpg) in that category. Iowa State s Kelsey Bolte ranks third (34.3 mpg). Last season, Moore led the Huskers in total minutes with 952 (34 games), an average of just 28.0 minutes per game, as Nebraska featured one of the deepest and most balanced lineups in Big 12 Conference history. In four Big 12 games, Moore has played 159 total minutes, including a career-high 45 in Nebraska s overtime win over Kansas on Jan. 16. She also played the full 40 against Kansas State (Jan. 22), Creighton (Dec. 8), Louisville (Dec. 20) and South Florida (Dec. 30). Over the last 12 games (December and January), Moore has been on the floor for all but 19 minutes for NU - an average of 38.8 minutes per game. With 12 regular-season games and a minimum of one Big 12 Tournament game left, Moore is on pace to play 1,125 total minutes (36.3 x 31 games). The last Huskers to play 1,000 minutes in a season were point guard Jina Johansen (1,156 minutes, 32 games, 36.1 mpg) and Kiera Hardy (1,038 minutes, 32.4 mpg) in Those totals are the two highest by Huskers in Coach Connie Yori s nine years at Nebraska.
