Our spread offense is going to do pretty good this year and our run counter gap. DEFENSE According to defensive end Chris Fillhart: It s mostly defensive line, getting to their spots, reading feet and the linebackers fill in the holes hard. He ll undoubtedly look to do so again in his first year of his second stint with the Raiders. Jacoby previously helped Lakota accomplish its last two winning seasons, going 7-3 in 2006 and 6-4 in However, in all the years the Raiders have had football, not once have they made the playoffs. Our first goal is, we want to win the first game. We want to win the league and then we want to go to the playoffs, said Jacoby, who was an assistant with the Raiders last year. We re in a tough region. There s not a whole lot of room for stubbing your toe. If we take care of business week to week, those things take care of themselves. He inherits a team that finished 4-6 overall with a 2-1 mark in the Sandusky River League. In his first stint with the Raiders, he compiled a record over five seasons. Since Jacoby s last year in 2007, Lakota has won just 20 games. We want to get that first win and we ll go from there. If we do what we re supposed to do and play hard, we should be in every game. Last season the Raiders averaged 19.9 points per game but scored more than half of their total in wins over Hardin Northern (48-0) and St. Wendelin (54-0). Running a multiple-look offense, Lakota will lean on the bulk of its offensive line and junior running back Gabe Boose (6-foot-1, 220 pounds). In a backup role last season, Boose rumbled for 445 yards and eight touchdowns on 87 carries. If we can get him going north and south, he can pose some problems for some defenses, Jacoby said. He s just a big kid that has good speed. That combination doesn t come every day, where you ve got a kid who s a breakaway threat and can run you over. That s a nice horse to have in the stable. Paving the way for Boose is a seasoned group of offensive linemen with the only departure being center Austin James. Senior Josh Short (5-11, 210) and junior Zack Stewart (5-9, 245) will start at tackle while senior Chris Fillhart (6-0, 195) and junior James Knallay (5-11, 210) will start at guard. Senior Dakota Gilbert will start at center. Fillhart, he knows all the schemes and can communicate better with everybody at guard, Jacoby said. Our line is our strength. It had better be a strength. As our line goes, we go. When they re not clearing space for Boose to get loose, they ll be giving time for sophomore quarterback Tyler Gabel to grow accustomed to the starting job. Gabel (6-1, 175) led the Raiders with 103 receiving yards and a touchdown on five catches, while seeing limited reps at quarterback behind Dakota Bowling. With Bowling gone and now playing his junior year at McComb, Gabel has earned the job and the respect of his teammates. WEAKNESSES: The Raiders had trouble expanding their passing dimension last season, averaging just 65.9 yards per game. Sophomore quarterback Tyler Gabel made 32 attempts in a backup role and will need to make big strides with his equally inexperienced receiving corp. GRIDIRON GURU Lakota will again kick off its season with the same three nonconference opponents as it had the previous two seasons. After running the table against them in 2013, the Raiders suffered a heartbreaking loss to Arcadia in Week 1 before falling to Gibsonburg and Cardinal Stritch to start 0-3. Look for Lakota to lean on a sound run game to set the tone early. The team s leading rusher, leading receiver and a whole lot of beef on the lines graduated from Liberty-Benton s Division V regional finalist squad of a year ago. Certainly, the Eagles reload rather than rebuild, but it may take coach Tim Nichols a game or two into the regular season to fit all the pieces into the puzzle. We knew going in that the biggest area of need was going to be up front, on both sides of the ball, Nichols said. We lost four of five along the offensive line. It s the same thing on the defensive side, three out of four along the line graduated. That s the tough spot, some of those guys occupied spots from their freshman and sophomore years. A lot of experience and size is gone. A veteran quarterback can cure a lot of ills, and L-B has one in senior Nathan Craft. Craft, entering his third year as a starter, threw for 1,378 yards and 12 TDs last year and ran for 713 yards and seven touchdowns. He s been in big games, he s been in playoff games and he s seen it, whatever can happen in games, Nichols said. The big thing for him is, we ve had some kids to go along with him in previous years and the ante has probably gone up for him this year. Nate knows that s coming, and as a senior he s more likely to be ready to handle it. When Wynford comes in (in Friday s season opener), there s likely a lot of things that are going to go wrong. If he handles it the right way, we ll be able to stay in it. Austin Combs rushed for 1,696 yards and 25 TDs last year. Senior Alec Rhodes looks to be the tailback this season. Alec is in good shape, but he s going to move inside to middle linebacker for us and if he can handle 20 carries a game then we feel pretty good about that, Nichols said. Senior Jeff Gierke can play wideout, wingback and tailback and will get his share of carries while spelling Rhodes. B.J. Lawson (40 catches, 836 yards, 5 TDs) caught nearly half of L-B receptions in 2014 and also graduated. Senior Mason Rose fills his spot. Both the offensive and defensive line return just one starter. Four starters are back on offense and five on defense, so those veterans must stay healthy. GRIDIRON GURU Veteran quarterback Nathan Craft will provide the Eagles stability in the early part of the season while the developing offensive line finds its sea legs. Expect L-B to perhaps be run-heavy early on as the receivers gain experience as well. The Eagles will feature their usual strong secondary but must get pocket pressure from a young defensive line. Bottom line: Expect a postseason spot for the Eagles.

That was painfully true for North Baltimore in 2014, but not for the way you might think. A year ago, the Tigers prepared for their inaugural Blanchard Valley Conference season with only 26 players. It was enough players to fill a roster, but not so many that they were able to withstand any attrition due to injury. Unfortunately for the Tigers, they weren t able to stay healthy and a promising 4-2 start to the season ended at 5-5, which included three consecutive BVC losses in toss-up games. The good news for North Baltimore is, at 36 players, it shouldn t have the same issues this year. The bad news? The Tigers need to find a new quarterback. That won t be an easy task. Gone is incumbent Lane Bishop, who was the BVC s leading passer (2,154 yards, 20 TDs) and fifth-leading rusher (1,105 yards, 16 TDs) in He certainly was a dynamic player, said second-year North Baltimore head coach Greg Bishop. Sean Watson and Brady Rader are co-no. 1s on the Tigers depth chart. Watson was the BVC s leading receiver last year with 41 catches and 689 yards. Rader, on the other hand, is a freshman. (It s) still undecided, Bishop said. It just depends when that final battle gets taken care of. We re giving them both a ton of reps. We don t change a lot of what we do, so they re both seeing a ton of reps with those plays. It would undoubtedly help any quarterback to have a player like Watson as a weapon. DEFENSIVE UNIT than 200 pounds, he has plenty of size and speed to be a matchup nightmare for opposing defense. But what if Watson ends up being the guy distributing the ball? He ll still have options, led by Taylor Bishop out of the backfield and Noah Brian out wide. And Watson s athleticism would ensure the Tigers have another dual-threat option behind center this year. North Bishop Baltimore returns some skill on offense, led by running back Taylor Bishop and receiver Noah Brian. WEAKNESSES: The bad news for the Tigers is they must replace quarterback Lane Bishop and three starting receivers, never a good thing for a spread team that relies heavily on the pass. The Tigers will also need better tackling and execution from a defense that gave up 34 points a game last year. GRIDIRON GURU The Tigers faltered as injuries piled up a year ago. North Baltimore began the season 4-2, but a host of players missed time and the Tigers lost three straight pivotal BVC games. With 10 more players on their preseason roster, the Tigers shouldn t have the same issues this year. But whoever ends up starting at quarterback, he will need to get acclimated quickly to make sure an offense that averaged 31.4 points a game last year doesn t miss a beat.

Fasone DEPTH CHART By NICK KAIRYS STAFF WRITER VAN BUREN If asked about their team s agility, a majority of coaches from college football s Southeastern Conference will tell you that speed kills. If you ask Van Buren head coach Kevin Shoup about the strength of his team this year, he s likely to say the same thing. Our biggest strength right now is our speed and athleticism, Shoup said. We re the fastest we have been in a long time. With a disappointing 2013 campaign, Shoup was a part of another frustrating season and Van Buren s 17th straight year with a losing record. Energized by staying healthy and determined for success, the 2014 Black Knights coaching staff focused on utilizing its skilled, returning speedsters. Offensively, they opened things up, posted a 9-3 record and brought home a first-round playoff victory against Lima Central Catholic. It was the first postseason win in the program s first postseason game. Last year we had a lot of fun, Shoup said. Last year it all came together. We stayed pretty healthy, made plays when we needed to and ended up having a great season. This year, the Black Knights return a team that is smaller than in previous years, but expect their quickness to substitute as a major advantage once again. The roster is also as large as it has ever been with 55 players something that comforts any coach who has led a team that has experienced multiple, devastating injuries. Guys are working hard to prove they deserve to be on the field, Shoup said. The whole next man up philosophy really comes in to play. In any small school football program, coaches will tell you that health is the key to a successful season. We just have to hope we stay healthy and things go our way. Shoup looks to his defensive line to dominate the line of scrimmage as it returns four seniors, including all- BVC players in Marcus Brand (6-foot- 3, 200 pounds) and Payten Whitticar (5-10, 185). The Wildcats of Vanlue are not like most teams. They were pretty excited about it, coach Chris Yeater said of his players when recalling a victory over St. Wendelin early in the 2014 season. It was a big win, even for the fans to see all the other kids rush the field. I was happy for all of them. Finishing the past two years at 0-10 and 1-9 was something not entirely under the Wildcats control. Vanlue currently lists 14 total players on its roster and is the smallest footballplaying school in Ohio. Limited depth is something Yeater said he s worked with before and will continue to be the weakest point of his team. Numbers are the big concern, Yeater said. We re pretty solid 1 through 11. It s probably the best we ve looked since I ve started here, but we just don t have any backups. Those big men will clear the way for senior Levi Kline (6-foot-1, 200 pounds) and sophomore Treg Price (6-0, 215) as dual rushing threats in the Vanlue backfield. They take over the ground attack previously dominated by third-team all-bvc tailback Jason Summers, who last year finished his senior season with 1,309 yards and 12 touchdowns. That was a single-season school rushing record. We ve got two really good-sized running backs coming back, so we re pretty excited to see what they do, Yeater said. Last year, I thought Levi Kline would be our premier back, but he was injured early on and was limited the rest of the year. Another player Yeater is anxious to see perform is junior quarterback Garrett Cornette (6-2, 160), who will start for a second consecutive year at the helm of the spread offense. With the continued split of the Blanchard Valley Conference, the Wildcats will avoid match-ups against Liberty Benton and Arlington, both teams that finished with 11 wins or more last season. Vanlue will battle the reigning Valley Division champion Van Buren Black Knights at home in October, which will present a large challenge. There s really no reason we shouldn t compete with anyone, Yeater said when asked about his BVC foes. In reality, there are some teams we play that are going to be pretty tough on Friday night, but we also have a handful of teams that, if we play our game, we will hang with them. B.J. may be the toughest player we have to replace, when you consider everything he did for us. He was a rock at corner for us. (Brian) hadn t played football in a while, and last year was his first year back at it. We re hoping to see him turn the page this year and become a much more dynamic player. No matter who ends up starting at quarterback, he should have the supporting cast needed to successfully pilot an offense that led the BVC with yards per game a year ago. North Baltimore returns a strong offensive line that should keep the quarterback upright and open holes for the running game. Arguably the most important thing for the Tigers is, even as Watson and Rader split presesaon reps, their similar skill set means the team hasn t needed to adjust its offensive scheme. They both can step in and deliver good balls, Taylor Bishop said. I think we ll be all right with either one. While the quarterback battle plays out, North Baltimore has another issue that s a little more complex than picking one player over another: Its defense needs improvement. Despite allowing 34 points and 386 yards a game last year, the Tigers actually improved significantly on their final season in the Midland Athletic League in 2013 (44 points, 430 yards per game). Still, those numbers aren t going to be good enough in a conference that saw five of its six playoff teams allow less than 20 points and 275 yards per game last year. 2, 215 pounds) is the lone returning lineman at offensive tackle and defensive end. We have a solid one in Jacob Schimmoeller who is back from last year, but you never really know about these other guys until we see some live stuff, Nichols said. We ve moved defensive backs up, moved defensive ends back and nobody s grabbed the bull by the horns. Our secondary will be solid, our front four will be good but we need that third linebacker. Chaz VanSant joins Schimmoeller at defensive end, and Nichols said the competition at defensive tackle is so fierce that the two spots may wind up being a continuing rotation with as many as five players seeing time and guaranteeing fresh legs. We feel pretty confident we can put a pretty good front four together, Nichols said. Greg Bishop said the team will rely heavily on its defensive line and linebackers to make plays. Early word out of camp has been promising. Everyone has been able to get their job done, said linebacker Zach Meggitt. Defensively, our front line is doing well, the linebackers are doing well. I think we re going to have a great season on defense. With more healthy bodies on the team, the Tigers hope to avoid the same late-season swoon that cost them a potential playoff berth a year ago. Greg Bishop said they want to contend for a league title and a playoff berth. But once the season starts, that bigpicture thinking is going to be left at the door. Those difficult match-ups assisted the Black Knights in terms of points needed for the playoffs and tested them in the long run. They finished the season with an undefeated run having combined for just nine catches in The Raiders did boast the best defense in the SRL, allowing averages of 21.6 points and just yards per game. If you re going to start somewhere, that s the place to start. I m excited for the change next year of bringing it back together as one, with one true champion. I think that s the way it should be. There s going to be a lot of competition within the league this year in both the Valley and the Blanchard Divisions. In a league like this, you have to bring it every week. The Black Knights open up nonconference play at home Friday against Allen East, another beginning to a difficult schedule. There is a lot of excitement in the program as well as the community, Shoup said. The guys are excited; they got a little taste of the postseason.
