Bowers Stadium - Huntsville, Texas Homecoming 81ST HOMECOMING FOR SAM HOUSTON STATE UNIVERSITY Sam Houston State University hosts its 81st homecoming football game Saturday in a 3 p.m. duel with the McNeese State Cowboys. Since the first Sam Houston alumni event was played at Joseph Pritchett Field in 1931, the Bearkats stand in SHSU homecomings. The Kats record on the artifical turf at Bowers in homecoming games is 19-9 with Sam Houston riding a five-game homecoming win streak. McNeese State is the Bearkats homecoming opponent for the seventh time. The Kats defeated the Cowboys in 2012 and in 1996 in homecoming tilts. McNeese was the victor in the other four alumni day matchups (1994, 1998, 2002 and 2008). TWO OF SOUTHLAND S BEST BATTLE SATURDAY Thirteen of the 23 seasons since McNeese and Sam Houston tied for the 1991 Southland Conference championship, either the Cowboys and the Bearkats or both have won or shared the league title. Sam Houston s five Southland football titles have come in 1991, 2001, 2004, 2011 and McNeese s 12 conference championships were in1979, 1980, 1991, 1993, 1995, 1997, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2006, 2007 and The pair stand as the league s winningest teams in FCS post-season action. Sam Houston owns a 10-7 record in the playoffs while McNeese stands Sam Houston reached the National Championship game in 2011 and McNeese was a finalist in 1997 and 2002 KATS FACE TOP 10 FCS OPPONENT McNeese State enters Saturday s game ranked No. 4 in the FCS national polls. The Bearkats own nine victories over FCS Top 10 ranked teams. The latest came in 2012 in the semifinals of the NCAA playoffs when Sam Houston defeated No. 4 Eastern Washington in Cheney. The Kats highest ranked victory was a win over No. 1 Montana in Huntsville in BEARKATS VERSUS COWBOYS ALL-TIME SERIES McNeese holds a 25-9 advantage over Sam Houston in the pair s all-time series. There has been one tie. Sam Houston is 5-21 against McNeese since joining the Southland in The Bearkats are 3-9 against McNeese in Bowers Stadium. TWO-TIME NATIONAL FINALISTS OWN THREE-YEAR PLAYOFF RUN Sam Houston is one of only three teams to earn FCS post-season playoff berths each of the past three seasons (joining North Dakota State and New Hampshire). The Bearkats reached the Championship Game in Frisco with playoff runs in both 2011 and Last year, the Kats lost by one point to Southeastern Louisiana in the second round of the playoffs. BEARKATS ON TELEVISION The Southland Conference TV Network / ESPN3 telecast of the SHSU-McNeeese game this week marks the 30th time in the past four season Bearkat football has been televised. Sam Houston has appeared in national cable telecasts on the ESPN family of networks 12 times. The Bearkats stand in their TV appearances the past four years. 2 SAM HOUSTON FOOTBALL GAME NOTES 2 PLENTY OF NEW FACES ON THE 2014 BEARKAT FOOTBALL SQUAD When Sam Houston opened the 2014 season August 23 at Eastern Washington, there were 18 players in the starting lineup who did not start in the spring game. Only seven players who started during the 9-5 campaign in 2013 returned this year. In the Bearkats Southland Conference opener two weeks ago against the Lamar Cardinals, running back Keshawn Hill on offense and safety Michael Wade on defense were the only seniors in the starting lineup. Sixty-one of the members of the 95-player roster in preseason camp were returning players from the 2013 playoff squad. That number included 44 returning lettermen, 12 red-shirt freshmen and five squadmen. Thirteen true freshman who signed in February also were present. Several transfers from FBS programs have joined the team including LaDarius Brown (WR- TCU), Derrick Edwards (WR-Texas Tech), Kiante Griffin (LB-Baylor), Josh Hunt (LB-Wake Forest), Jacobi Hunter (DT-California), Jarrell Oliver (RB-Utah), Trenier Orr (CB-Cincinnati), Jalen Overstreet (RB-Texas), Ernest Payton (CB-Missouri) and Xavier Smith (CB-Missouri). KEY FIGURES IN BEARKAT OFFENSE Sophomore Jared Johnson is the starting quarterback for the Kats this fall after serving as a back-up to All-Southland Conference quarterback Brian Bell last year. Bell finished his career as Sam Houston s all-time passing and total offense leader in Johnson is averaging yards passing and total offense per game in his five starts this season. Johnson has completed 102 of 184 passes for 1,081 yards and six touchdowns. He has rushed 57 times for 185 yards including a 53-yard touchdown run in the season opener. Fellow sophomore Don King III has gone 9 for 13 for 107 yards and a score coming off the bench. Senior Keshawn Hill is a preseason All-Southland selection at running back. The back-up to All-America Timothy Flanders the past two seasons, Hill has carried 55 times for 264 yards and 4 scores. His 79-yard TD run at Eastern Washington is his longest career rush. Hill ranks No. 12 in SHSU career all-purpose yards (2,826) and No. 21 in career rushing (1,660 yards). Texas transfer Jalen Overstreet rushed 9 times for 132 yards in the Lamar victory. That included a 50-yards touchdown run up the middle. Overstreet has 26 carries for the season for 233 yards. He is averaging 9.0 yards per carry. Transfer Donavan Williams from ASA College has 34 carries for 171 yards and 3 touchdowns. The Kats feature a talented receiving corps. Redshirt freshman Yedidiah Louis has 26 catches for 272 yards including a 48-yard catch-and-run at LSU. His 54.4 yards receiving per game ranks third among FCS freshman receivers. LaDarius Brown, a transfer from TCU, has 14 catches for 183 yards. Donald Jackson III, Zachary Stevens and Brandon DeWitt all were starters in the offensive line last year. Jackson both is a preseason All-Southland selection. DeWitt was a freshman All- America selection in THE BEARKAT DEFENSE Only three 2013 starters - safety Michael Wade and Desmond Fite and tackle Sione Latu - are back this fall on the SHSU defense. However 19 players who played in reserve roles plus several top newcomers have stepped in for the Bearkats. Wade is a preseason All-Southland selection after an outstanding junior season. He is the team s top returning tackler with 105 stops and two interceptions last year. He leads the squad again this fall with 21 solo stops and 14 assists. His interception in the Alabama State victory in the home opener was his fourth career pick. Redshirt freshman defensive end P. J. Hall earned Southland defensive player-of-the-week honors after the Lamar victory. Hall led the team with seven stops and blocked a field goal. He is on the Southland s list of candidates for the Jerry Rice Award as the FCS s top freshman. Hall leads the squad in tackles for losses (7-26) and has 26 total stops this fall. Sophomore linebacker Myke Chatman is the Bearkats second-leading tackler with 32 stops including four for losses and a sack. Junior linebacker Tristan Eche has totaled 29 tackles. Cornerback Trenier Orr, a transfer from Cincinnati, has made an immediate impression in the secondary with 26 tackles. He returned an intercpetion 55 yards for a touchdown in the Eastern Washington game. Fellow cornerback Mikell Everette, a transfer from Pima C.C. in Tucson, set up Sam Houston s first TD at Lamar with a 22-yard interception return. He has 23 tackles to his credit. 3 SAM HOUSTON FOOTBALL GAME NOTES 3 SPECIAL TEAMS HAVE BEEN A BEARKAT STRENGTH THIS FALL Australian punter Lachlan Edwards ranks third in the Southland Conference with a 43.7 average on 38 kicks. He has 10 punts of 50 or more yards, nine punts inside the 20 and 12 that have been fair caught. All-Southland Conference kicker Luc Swimberghe kicked field goals of 30, 32 and 38 yards in the Alabama State victory. The sophomore was the team s leading scorer with 97 points last year. Trent Williams returns as Sam Houston s deep snaps specialist. PENALTIES, TWO TURNOVERS DERAIL BEARKAT UPSET ATTEMPT AT EWU Leading twice, tied at half and down by only seven with 5:14 remaining against No. 1 ranked Eastern Washington August 23, the No. 14 rated Bearkats saw their upset hopes fade in the final minutes of a loss on ESPN national television August 23 in Cheney, Washington. The two teams combined for 91 points and 1,166 yards total offense. The Kats hurt their cause with 16 penalties for 159 yards and a pair of turnovers. All-America quarterback Vernon Adams lived up to his billing as the favorite to win the 2014 Walter Payton Award. Adams passed for 302 yards and four touchdowns. The Eagles ended the day with 100 plays for 624 total yards. There were many positives for the Bearkats. Sam Houston totaled 542 yards on 85 plays. Quarterback Jared Johnson showed promise in his second career start, accounting for 367 yards total offense. The sophomore completed 31 passes for 317 yards and two touchdowns. He had a 53-yard scoring run on an option play. Senior running back Keshawn Hill was the leading rusher for the Bearkats with 17 carries for 133 yards including a 79-yard touchdown for the Kats first score. BEARKATS WIN HOME OPENER OVER ALABAMA STATE Sophomore quarterback Jared Johnson passed for 386 yards and three TDs in a win in SHSU s home opener at Elliott T. Bowers Stadium August 30. The Bearkats set school records with 685 total offense yards and 105 plays. The 685 yards eclipsed the old mark of 655 yards set against McNeese State in The Kats 105 plays broke the record of 102 set versus Southeastern Louisiana in SHSU s 34 first downs tied the school mark first set against Texas State in 2008 game. Defensively, the Kats gave up only one touchdown in four red zone visits by the Hornets Myke Chatman led the team with six tackles including one for a loss. LARGEST CROWD TO SEE SHSU PLAY FOOTBALL IN BATON ROUGE FBS No. 12 ranked LSU shut out the Kats 56-0 before a record 100,338 fans in Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge Oct. 6, the largest crowd ever to see Sam Houston play football. The previous high attendance was 88,913 fans at Memorial Stadium in Austin in Bright spots for the Bearkats included wide receiver Yedidiah Louis catching four passes for 102 yards including a long gain of 48 yards and punter Lachlan Edwards posting a 44.2 yard average on nine kicks. Defensively, safety Michael Wade and linebacker A. J. Davis led the team each with 11 tackles. LOSS TO COLORADO STATE-PUEBLO ON FAMILY WEEKEND SHOCKS KATS Colorado State-Pueblo, the No. 2 ranked team in NCAA Division II, ended Sam Houston s 23-game home winning streak with a victory over the Kats September 13. The Thunderwolves jumped out to a 27-0 halftime lead and never looked back. CSUP, three-time defending Rocky Mountain Conference champions, out-gained Sam Houston 446 yards to 226. GET BETTER WEEK LED TO WIN AT LAMAR With Sam Houston moving its Eastern Washington game from Sept. 20 to Aug. 23 for ESPN, the Bearkats had an open date before their Southland opener at Lamar. SHSU coach K. C. Keeler used the bye as a Get Better week. The result was a victory over Lamar in the Kats Southland Conference opener. We definitely got better during the open week, Keeler said. We got back to the basics just like in preseason training camp and practiced really hard. We played with a lot of emotion. Sam Houston limited a Lamar offense that came into the game the Southland s scoring and total offense leaders to a touchdown and a field goal in a victory. LAST YEAR S GAME McNEESE STATE 31, SAM HOUSTON 23 Lake Charles, La - Cowboy Stadium - 13,352 Cody Stroud threw for three touchdowns and 267 yards and Marcus Wiltz ran for 122 yards and one score as No. 9 McNeese handed the Bearkats a Southland Conference loss. The Bearkats were limited to 84 yards rushing. Brian Bell threw for 315 yards and two touchdowns. Jared Johnson passed for 164 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 78 more. The Kats forced seven Lamar fumbles, recovering three. P. J. Hall led the defense with seven stops including a quarterback sack and blocked a Cardinal punt. BEARKATS AFTER OPEN DATES Since the 2011 season, Sam Houston is 5-0 after an open weekend. Overall, in 27 seasons at the FCS level, Sam Houston is after open dates. NORTHWESTERN STATE NEXT FOR SAM HOUSTON Sam Houston travels to Natchitoches, La., October 18 to take on Northwestern State in the Bearkats second Southland TV Network telecast this season. Kickoff is 3 p.m. The Kats meeting with Stephen F. Austin in the 89th Battle of the Piney Woods at NRG Stadium in Houston November 1 also will be regionally telecast by SLC-TV. HEAD COACHES TAB KATS TO FINISH THIRD IN SOUTHLAND Defending champion Southeastern Louisiana has been tabbed as the favorite to win the 2014 Southland Conference football title while McNeese State and Sam Houston are picked second and third, respectively, according to this year s head coaches preseason poll. The Lions, Cowboys and Bearkats all earned NCAA Division I FCS playoff berths last year. Following the trio in the coaches poll are Central Arkansas and Northwestern State in fourth and fifth place and Stephen F. Austin and Lamar tied for sixth. Abilene Christian, Nicholls, Incarnate Word and Houston Baptist round out the field. Sam Houston won back-to-back Southland titles in 2011 and 2012, advancing to the FCS Championship Game in Frisco both seasons. SIX BEARKATS NAMED TO PRESEASON ALL-SOUTHLAND TEAM Senior safety Michael Wade, junior offensive lineman Donald Jackson III and sophomore kicking specialist Luc Swimberghe were voted as first team selections on the 2014 Preseason All-Southland Conference squad. Running back Keshawn Hill, defensive lineman Gary Lorance and tight end Shane Young (all seniors) were voted to the second team. Jackson was a first team All-Southland honoree last year. Wade is Sam Houston s top returning tackler. Swimberge was the team s leading scorer with 97 points in Hill is a member of two SHSU 1,000-yard clubs (rushing and all-purpose yards). Young earned honorable mention All-Southland tight end honors in Lorance is a two-time All-Southland defensive lineman. SAM HOUSTON STATE UNIVERSITY A Great Name in Texas Education, Sam Houston State University was founded in 1879 and stands today as the third-oldest public university in Texas. Created to train school teachers, today s Sam Houston offers a broad range of academic programs leading to bachelor s, master s and doctoral degrees. Enrollment at the University has risen consistently, reaching an all-time high of more than 19,200 last year. The University is named for General Sam Houston, the only man in United State history to be governor of two states (Tennessee and Texas). He led Texas to independence with the victory over Santa Anna at the battle of San Jacinto in He was the first president of the Republic of Texas and a U.S. senator for the State of Texas as well. Sam Houston is buried in Huntsville not far from the campus of the University which is named in his honor. Keeler was named as Sam Houston s 15th head football coach on January 23, In 21 seasons as a head coach at the college level, Keeler owns an overall record of His teams have made 13 NCAA tournament appearances and eight trips to national championship games. Keeler s 2003 Delaware squad won the FCS national championship in The Blue Hens reached the FCS Championship Game in 2007 and Delaware compiled an 11-3 record in NCAA playoff competition. During his 11 seasons at Delaware, the Blue Hens rolled up an record. Keeler s teams won Atlantic 10 titles in 2003 and 2004 and the Colonial Athletic Association championship in At Rowan University in Glassboro, N. J., Keeler produced an record from 1993 to 2001 that included seven NCAA Division III playoff appearances including five trips to the National Championship game. His teams posted a 21-7 record in NCAA Division III playoff action. Among Keeler s coaching honors are selections as AFCA FCS National Coach of the Year, Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year, Maxwell Club Tri-State Coach of the Year and the All-America Football Foundation Johnny Vaught Head Coach Award. Keeler was a four-sport letterman at Emmaus, Pa., High School. He earned allleague honors and was football team captain as a tight end and linebacker. He played linebacker for head coach Tubby Raymond at Delaware from 1978 to 1980, helping lead the Blue Hens to the 1979 NCAA Division II national championship. In 1980, he signed a free agent contract with the Philadelphia Eagles. Keeler began his coaching career as an assistant at Amherst College in Massachusetts in 1981, then moved to Rowan University in He was named head coach at Rowan in The Profs won four New Jersey Athletic Conference championships (1993, 1995, 1997, 2001) and finished as runner-up in the league twice in Keeler s nine seasons. His teams won the Lambert Cup eight times and were named ECAC Team of the Year nine seasons. Keeler coached five NFL draft picks at Delaware including Super Bowl XLVII MVP quarterback Joe Flacco. He has tutored 71 All-America players and 21 student-athletes who have earned either national or district CoSIDA Academic All- America honors. Kurt Charles K. C.
