Bowers Stadium - Huntsville, Texas - 3 p.m. BEARKATS, WILDCATS RENEW OLD LONE STAR CONFERENCE RIVALRY This Saturday at Elliott T. Bowers Stadium, Sam Houston and Abilene Christian renew a football rivalry that dates back to the Bearkats Lone Star Conference days. The pair have not faced each other on the gridiron since Sam Houston was a Lone Star member from 1932 to Abilene Christian was a charter member of the Southland Conference in 1964 but moved to the Lone Star in The two universities competed in the LSC from 1972 until The Bearkats left the Lone Star to move up to the NCAA Division I level in This is Abilene Christian s first year back competing in the Southland Conference in football. SAM HOUSTON S 1964 CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM CELEBRATES 50TH ANNIVERSARY The 1964 Sam Houston football team that won the Lone Star Conference championship and shared the NAIA national title with Concordia College of Minnesota will be honored Saturday on the 50th anniversary of their achievements. Under the leadership of head coach Paul Red Pierce, the 1964 Bearkats rolled to a record of nine victories, one loss and one tie. Eleven Bearkats were honored as All-Lone Star Conference players. Two were named NAIA All-America and four others received NAIA All- America honorable mention. The 1964 Kats were unbeaten in regular season non-conference play and earned the right to hoist the Lone Star Conference championship trophy with a 5-1 league record. Sam Houston s only loss was to conference runner-up Sul Ross. The Lobos finished a half game behind the Bearkats in the standings, however, after losing to Stephen F. Austin and a tie with Texas A&I. In the semifinals of the NAIA national playoffs, Sam Houston defeated Findley of Ohio The victory advanced the Kats to the national championship game in Augusta, Georgia, where Sam Houston battled to a 7-7 tie with Concordia. KESHAWN HILL POSTS CAREER ACHIEVEMENTS IN NORTHWESTERN STATE GAME Senior running back Keshawn Hill posted a career best 198 yards rushing on 17 carries Saturday at Northwestern State. The total included touchdown runs of 74, 66 and 3 yards. The 198 yards rank as the 13th best single game performance by a Bearkat. The game moved Hill up in three Sam Houston career statistics categories. He now stands No. 5 in career rushing touchdowns (24), No. 9 in career all-purpose yards (3,076) and No. 14 in all-time Bearkat rushing yards (1,873). Hill is 127 yards away from becoming the 11th Sam Houston running back to amass 2,000 or more career yards on the ground. Saturday s contest marked Hill s third 100-yard rushing game. The other two were 132 yards vs. Southeastern Louisiana in 2012 and 133 yards at Eastern Washington in the 2014 season opener. AUSTRALIAN LACHLAN EDWARDS SETS SINGLE GAME PUNTING RECORD Junior punter Lachlan Edwards from Hastings, Victoria in Australia set a Bearkat school record with his 49.8 average on five punts at Northwestern State. The previous record of 49.5 yards stood for 16 years. It was set by Ryan Klaus versus Angelo State, Edwards punts covered 39, 49, 53, 51 and a season best 57 yards. Edwards leads the Southland Conference and ranks No. 4 nationally in FCS with a 44.9 average. He has 17 punts of 50 or more yards this year. 2 SAM HOUSTON FOOTBALL GAME NOTES 2 SAM HOUSTON STATE AT ELLIOTT T. BOWERS STADIUM In the 29 years since Elliott T. Bowers Stadium opened in 1986, the Bearkats stand on their home turf. Sam Houston has not lost a Southland Conference football game at Bowers since 2010 (against McNeese), winning their last 10 home league contests. KATS SWEPT LEAGUE PLAYER OF WEEK HONORS AFTER McNEESE VICTORY After the upset of No. 4 ranked McNeese State Oct. 11, Sam Houston State swept Southland Conference football player of the week honors. Sophomore quarterback Jared Johnson was named Offensive Player of the Week, freshman defensive end P.J. Hall earned his second defensive player of the week award of the season and sophomore kicker Luc Swimberghe earned the special teams honor. Johnson, who also earned FCS national player of the week honors, accounted for 382 yards of total offense and four touchdowns in the victory over the Cowboys that extended SHSU s conference home winning streak to 11 games. The sophomore from Grand Prairie / South Grand Prairie set an SHSU single game school record for most yards rushing by a QB (190). Included in the total were touchdown runs of 73 and 67 yards. Johnson also threw for 193 yards with touchdown passes of 22 and nine yards. Hall led the Sam Houston defense with 11 tackles, including five solos. He had two pass break-ups. The freshman from Seguin had three tackles for losses. He was an integral part of the Bearkat defense that limited the league s top-ranked offense in scoring and rushing offense to just 209 rushing yards in the game and only seven points in the first three quarters. Swimberghe kicked a season-best 44-yard field goal (the second longest of his career). The Tyler/Lindale product kicked 5-of-5 PATs against McNeese. PLENTY OF NEW FACES ON THE 2014 BEARKAT FOOTBALL SQUAD When Sam Houston opened the 2014 season August 23 at Eastern Washington, there were 18 players in the starting lineup who did not start in the spring game. Only seven players who started during the 9-5 campaign in 2013 returned this year. In the Bearkats Southland Conference opener against the Lamar Cardinals, running back Keshawn Hill on offense and safety Michael Wade on defense were the only seniors in the starting lineup. Several transfers from FBS programs have joined the team including LaDarius Brown (WR- TCU), Derrick Edwards (WR-Texas Tech), Kiante Griffin (LB-Baylor), Josh Hunt (LB-Wake Forest), Jacobi Hunter (DT-California), Jarrell Oliver (RB-Utah), Trenier Orr (CB-Cincinnati), Jalen Overstreet (RB-Texas), Ernest Payton (CB-Missouri) and Xavier Smith (CB-Missouri). KEY FIGURES IN BEARKAT OFFENSE Sophomore Jared Johnson is the starting quarterback for the Kats this fall after serving as a back-up to All-Southland Conference quarterback Brian Bell last year. Bell finished his career as Sam Houston s all-time passing and total offense leader in Johnson is averaging yards passing and total offense per game in his six starts this season. Johnson has completed 125 of 235 passes for 1,358 yards and 8 touchdowns. He has rushed 81 times for 430 yards including three TD runs of more than 50 yards. Fellow sophomore Don King III has gone 9 for 13 for 107 yards and a score coming off the bench. Senior Keshawn Hill is a preseason All-Southland selection at running back. The back-up to All-America Timothy Flanders the past two seasons, Hill has carried 76 times for 477 yards and 8 scores. His 79-yard touchdown run at Eastern Washington is his longest career rush. Texas transfer Jalen Overstreet has rushed 44 times for 326 yards in the Lamar victory. He scored on a 50-yards touchdown run up the middle in the Lamar victory. Overstreet has 37 carries for the season for 286 yards. He is averaging 7.4 yards per carry. Transfer Donavan Williams from ASA College has 56 carries for 264 yards and 3 touchdowns. Redshirt freshman Yedidiah Louis has 33 catches for 362 yards including a 48-yard catchand-run at LSU. His 51.7 yards receiving per game rank second among FCS freshman receivers. LaDarius Brown, a transfer from TCU, has 19 catches for 259 yards. Donald Jackson III, Zachary Stevens and Brandon DeWitt all were starters in the offensive line last year. 3 SAM HOUSTON FOOTBALL GAME NOTES 3 THE BEARKAT DEFENSE Only three 2013 starters - safety Michael Wade and Desmond Fite and tackle Sione Latu - are back this fall on the SHSU defense. However 19 players who played in reserve roles plus several top newcomers have stepped in for the Bearkats. Wade is a preseason All-Southland selection after an outstanding junior season. He is the team s top returning tackler with 105 stops and two interceptions last year. He leads the squad again this fall with 33 solo stops and 24 assists. His interceptions versus Alabama State and Northwestern State give him five career picks. Redshirt freshman defensive end P. J. Hall is a two-time Southland defensive player-ofthe-week. Hall led the team with seven stops and blocked a field goal to win his first award at Lamar. He is on the Southland s list of candidates for the Jerry Rice Award as the FCS s top freshman. Hall leads the squad in tackles for losses (13-50) and has 43 total stops this fall. Sophomore linebacker Myke Chatman is the Bearkats second-leading tackler with 45 stops including six for losses and a sack. Junior linebacker Tristan Eche has totaled 39 tackles. Cornerback Trenier Orr, a transfer from Cincinnati, has made an immediate impression in the secondary with 33 tackles. He returned an interception 55 yards for a touchdown in the Eastern Washington game. The Bearkat defense has created seven turnovers in their three Southland Conference contests. P. J. Hall, Mikell Everitt, Trenier Orr and Michael Wade all have interceptions while Myke Chatman, Darron Harris and Steve York have fumble recoveries to their credit. The Kats limited the No. 5 ranked McNeese Cowboys to 298 total yards. McNeese passed for only 89 yards and gained just 209 on the ground. Sam Houston allowed McNeese only one score through the first three quarters as the Bearkats built a 35-7 lead. SPECIAL TEAMS HAVE BEEN A BEARKAT STRENGTH THIS FALL Australian punter Lachlan Edwards leads the Southland Conference and ranks third in FCS with a 44.9 average on 49 kicks. He has 17 punts of 50 or more yards. All-Southland Conference kicker Luc Swimberghe is 9-for-9 on field goals this year including a long of 44. The sophomore was the team s leading scorer with 97 points last year. GET BETTER WEEK LED TO WIN AT LAMAR With Sam Houston moving its Eastern Washington game from Sept. 20 to Aug. 23 for ESPN, the Bearkats had an open date before their Southland opener at Lamar. SHSU coach K. C. Keeler used the bye as a Get Better week. The result was a victory over Lamar in the Kats Southland Conference opener. Sam Houston limited a Lamar offense that came into the game the Southland s scoring and total offense leaders to a TD and a field goal in a victory. University of Texas transfer Jalen Overstreet rushed for 130 yards on seven carries including a 50-yard fourth quarter touchdown. Jared Johnson passed for 164 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 78 more. The Kats forced seven Lamar fumbles, recovering three. P. J. Hall led the defense with seven stops including a quarterback sack and blocked a Cardinal punt. LOSS TO COLORADO STATE-PUEBLO Colorado State-Pueblo, the No. 2 ranked team in NCAA Division II, ended Sam Houston s 23-game home winning streak with a victory over the Kats September 13. The Thunderwolves jumped out to a 27-0 halftime lead and never looked back. CSUP, three-time defending Rocky Mountain Conference champions, out-gained Sam Houston 446 yards to 226. LARGEST CROWD TO SEE SHSU PLAY FOOTBALL IN BATON ROUGE FBS No. 12 ranked LSU shut out the Kats 56-0 before a record 100,338 fans in Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge Oct. 6, the largest crowd ever to see Sam Houston play football. The previous high attendance was 88,913 fans at Memorial Stadium in Austin in Bright spots for the Bearkats included wide receiver Yedidiah Louis catching four passes for 102 yards including a long gain of 48 yards and punter Lachlan Edwards posting a 44.2 yard average on nine kicks. Defensively, safety Michael Wade and linebacker A. J. Davis led the team each with 11 tackles. 4 SAM HOUSTON FOOTBALL GAME NOTES 4 BEARKATS WIN HOME OPENER OVER ALABAMA STATE Sophomore quarterback Jared Johnson passed for 386 yards and three TDs in a win in SHSU s home opener at Elliott T. Bowers Stadium August 30. The Bearkats set school records with 685 total offense yards and 105 plays. The 685 yards eclipsed the old mark of 655 yards set against McNeese State in The Kats 105 plays broke the record of 102 set versus Southeastern Louisiana in SHSU s 34 first downs tied the school mark first set against Texas State in 2008 game. Defensively, the Kats gave up only one touchdown in four red zone visits by the Hornets Myke Chatman led the team with six tackles including one for a loss. MISTAKES DERAIL BEARKAT UPSET ATTEMPT AT EWU Leading twice, tied at half and down by only seven with 5:14 remaining against No. 1 ranked Eastern Washington August 23, the No. 14 rated Bearkats saw their upset hopes fade in the final minutes of a loss on ESPN national television August 23 in Cheney, Washington. The two teams combined for 91 points and 1,166 yards total offense. The Kats hurt their cause with 16 penalties for 159 yards and a pair of turnovers. All-America quarterback Vernon Adams lived up to his billing as the favorite to win the 2014 Walter Payton Award. Adams passed for 302 yards and four touchdowns. The Eagles ended the day with 100 plays for 624 total yards. There were many positives for the Bearkats. Sam Houston totaled 542 yards on 85 plays. Quarterback Jared Johnson showed promise in his second career start, accounting for 367 yards total offense. The sophomore completed 31 passes for 317 yards and two touchdowns. He had a 53-yard scoring run on an option play. Senior running back Keshawn Hill was the leading rusher for the Bearkats with 17 carries for 133 yards including a 79-yard touchdown for the Kats first score. HEAD COACHES TAB KATS TO FINISH THIRD IN SOUTHLAND Defending champion Southeastern Louisiana has been tabbed as the favorite to win the 2014 Southland Conference football title while McNeese State and Sam Houston are picked second and third, respectively, according to this year s head coaches preseason poll. The Lions, Cowboys and Bearkats all earned NCAA Division I FCS playoff berths last year. Following the trio in the coaches poll are Central Arkansas and Northwestern State in fourth and fifth place and Stephen F. Austin and Lamar tied for sixth. Abilene Christian, Nicholls, Incarnate Word and Houston Baptist round out the field. Sam Houston won back-to-back Southland titles in 2011 and 2012, advancing to the FCS Championship Game in Frisco both seasons. SIX BEARKATS NAMED TO PRESEASON ALL-SOUTHLAND TEAM Senior safety Michael Wade, junior offensive lineman Donald Jackson III and sophomore kicking specialist Luc Swimberghe were voted as first team selections on the 2014 Preseason All-Southland Conference squad. Running back Keshawn Hill, defensive lineman Gary Lorance and tight end Shane Young (all seniors) were voted to the second team. Jackson was a first team All-Southland honoree last year. Wade is Sam Houston s top returning tackler. Swimberge was the team s leading scorer with 97 points in Hill is a member of two SHSU 1,000-yard clubs (rushing and all-purpose yards). Young earned honorable mention All-Southland tight end honors in Lorance is a two-time All-Southland defensive lineman. Keeler was named as Sam Houston s 15th head football coach on January 23, In 21 seasons as a head coach at the college level, Keeler owns an overall record of His teams have made 13 NCAA tournament appearances and eight trips to national championship games. Keeler s 2003 Delaware squad won the FCS national championship in The Blue Hens reached the FCS Championship Game in 2007 and Delaware compiled an 11-3 record in NCAA playoff competition. During his 11 seasons at Delaware, the Blue Hens rolled up an record. Keeler s teams won Atlantic 10 titles in 2003 and 2004 and the Colonial Athletic Association championship in At Rowan University in Glassboro, N. J., Keeler produced an record from 1993 to 2001 that included seven NCAA Division III playoff appearances including five trips to the National Championship game. His teams posted a 21-7 record in NCAA Division III playoff action. Among Keeler s coaching honors are selections as AFCA FCS National Coach of the Year, Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year, Maxwell Club Tri-State Coach of the Year and the All-America Football Foundation Johnny Vaught Head Coach Award. Keeler was a four-sport letterman at Emmaus, Pa., High School. He earned allleague honors and was football team captain as a tight end and linebacker. He played linebacker for head coach Tubby Raymond at Delaware from 1978 to 1980, helping lead the Blue Hens to the 1979 NCAA Division II national championship. In 1980, he signed a free agent contract with the Philadelphia Eagles. Keeler began his coaching career as an assistant at Amherst College in Massachusetts in 1981, then moved to Rowan University in He was named head coach at Rowan in The Profs won four New Jersey Athletic Conference championships (1993, 1995, 1997, 2001) and finished as runner-up in the league twice in Keeler s nine seasons. His teams won the Lambert Cup eight times and were named ECAC Team of the Year nine seasons. Keeler coached five NFL draft picks at Delaware including Super Bowl XLVII MVP quarterback Joe Flacco. He has tutored 71 All-America players and 21 student-athletes who have earned either national or district CoSIDA Academic All- America honors. Kurt Charles K. C.
