7 20133 U SA A Natioo nal l TeT eam m Notee s USA Men's National Teams History Since first fielding in 1992 a team of legendary NBA stars, USA Basketball National Teams featuring NBA players have competed in 15 international basketball competitions and compiled a recording official competitions, while also posting a record of 42-1 in exhibition games. Of all the wins and all the records established by these teams, no statistic has been more followed than the margin of victory. The biggest margin of victory for a competition was recorded by the 1992 Dream Team in the Tournament of the Americas which served as the Americas Olympic qualifying tournament. In its six games, the U.S. posted an average margin of victory of an eye-popping 51.5 ppg The largest margin of victory in a single game for a USA National Team is 79 points and was accomplished in the very first game featuring NBA stars in USA Basketball's red, white and blue uniforms. The USA Basketball "Dream Team" in its first game of the 1992 Tournament of the Americas in Portland, Oregon, romped past Cuba (June 28, 1992). NBA players first represented the U.S. in international basketball at the 1992 Tournament of the Americas in Portland, Ore., the Olympic qualifying tournament for FIBA s Americas Zone (North, South and Central America and the Caribbean). But how did NBA players become eligible for FIBA competitions? Until 1989, FIBA's rules for international competitions prevented only NBA players from participating in the Olympics or World Championships. Teams representing the USA at the Olympics ( ) and World Championships ( ) consisted of collegians or Amateur Athletic Union players. After a vote to change the rule fell just short (31-27, with 16 federations abstaining) of passing on June 30, 1986, a proposal to allow "open competition" overwhelmingly passed by a vote of on April 7, 1989, at a specially convened FIBA World Congress. That vote cleared the way for NBA players' participation in FIBA events. Approximately 38 months later, USA Basketball sent its now legendary Dream Team to the 1992 Tournament of the American and then the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. The USA collection of NBA superstars at the 92 Tournament of the Americas rolled to a perfect 6-0 mark and earned a berth in the Olympics. The famed squad then finished 8-0 to capture the Olympic gold medal by an average point difference of 43.8 points a game, and spurred by the Dream Team, the popularity of basketball reached an all-time high FIBA World Basketball Cup Breakdown The 2014 FIBA World Cup will be held August 30 - September 14, 2014, in Spain. For the first time 24 teams are competing in the World Cup. The breakdown of the 24 teams that will compete in the 2014 FIBA World Cup are as follows: 1. SPAIN (Host Country) 2. Nine players DeMarcus Cousins, DeMar DeRozan, Derrick Favors, Paul George, Taj Gibson, Gordon Hayward, Jrue Holiday, Kyrie Irving and Klay Thompson, were all members of the 2012 USA Basketball Select Team that trained against the U.S. Olympic Team during its July 6-11 training in Las Vegas. Selected to play on other USA Basketball teams were Beal (2010 U17 World Championship, 2009 U16 Championship); Conley (2005 USA Basketball Youth Development Festival- White Team); Cousins (2007 USA Basketball Youth Development Festival-Blue Team); Drummond (2010 U17 World Championship, 2009 U16 Championship); Hayward (2009 U19 World Championship); Holiday (2007 USA Basketball Youth Development Festival-Blue Team); Jordan (2007 U19 World Championship); Kidd-Gilchrist (2010 MU17 World Championship); McDermott (2013 USA World University Games Team, 2011 USA U19 World Championship Team); Monroe (2007 USA Basketball Youth Development Festival-White Team); Smart (2013 USA U19 World Championship Team, 2012 USA U18 Championship Team); Thompson (2009 U19 World Championship); and Walker (2008 U18 Championship). USA Coaching Staff Rerun Since restructuring the USA Basketball Men s National Team program following the 2004 Athens Olympics, three factors have been constant and those are the successful combination of USA Basketball National Team managing director Jerry Colangelo, USA National Team head coach Mike Krzyzewski and USA National Team assistant coach Jim Boeheim. Colangelo, Krzyzewski and Boeheim, led the American men to a 37-1 win-loss record between and the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Between , the trio directed the USA Basketball Men's National Team to a perfect 26-0 record and gold medal finishes at the 2010 FIBA World Championship and 2012 London Olympics All together, since becoming involved with the USA National Team, the program has logged a remarkable 62-1 record. USA Basketball Chairman Jerry Colangelo officially announced on May 23, 2013, that Basketball Hall of Fame mentor Krzyzewski would return as head coach of the USA Basketball Men's National Team program for , and on June 10, 2013, announced that Boeheim was returning as one of the USA s three assistant coaches. About four years ago I was asked about Coach K s return and what I said then is still true now - when you have a good thing going you don t mess with it, said Colangelo. I m delighted to announce that Coach K has agreed to return as head coach of the USA Basketball Men s National Team for , and I really can t be more pleased and excited. He was and still is the right man to coach the USA National Team. We ve seen the value of continuity and Coach K s return gives our national team program another four years of continuity. Together we have been able to build on the program s successes of each year and again establish the United States as the world s number one basketball country. Repeating our performances from the previous four years, which included winning gold at the 2010 FIBA World Championship and the 2012 London Olympics, will be quite a challenge, but it is one we look forward to undertaking. USA Basketball's National Team program during the threeyear period between 2006 and 2008 compiled a striking 37-1 overall win-loss record and just as importantly reestablished the USA team and its members as positive ambassadors for the United States and the sport. The USA squad culminated the quadrennium by finishing 8-0 to reclaim the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the USA's first gold in a major international competition since In the team s first competition of the cycle, Krzyzewski, Boeheim, McMillan and then Toronto Raptors head coach Jay Triano, who filled in for D Antoni who was unable to travel because of back issues, won the FIBA World Championship and the U.S. finished 9-0 to capture the world title. On Top Of The World The USA men remain on top of the FIBA world rankings with an 952 rating, while Spain (870) is No. 2, Argentina (498) is No. 3, Greece (418) is No. 4 and Lithuania (406) closes out the top five. Russia (363), Turkey (302), France (260), Brazil (254) and Australia (234) rank sixth through 10th. In fact, the United States ranks No. 1 in all five of FIBA's world ranking categories, including combined, men's, women's, boys and girls. The FIBA rankings are calculated within the scope of a two Olympic Games cycle (including qualifying competitions at FIBA Zone level). The weighing of the U18 and U16 Zone Championships have been adapted to frequency of competitions. Whenever a new championship is played the oldest championship of that category drops out. The FIBA Ranking is then recalculated. Since 2008, USA Basketball men s and women s teams have compiled a sterling win-loss record in FIBA or FIBA Americas competitions. USA teams are the current men s and women s champions of the Olympics and the FIBA World Championships; FIBA men s and women s U19 world champions; the men s and women s title holders for the FIBA U17 World Championships; and the men s and women s U18 and U16 FIBA Americas champions USA Basketball Men s National Team

10 Since USA Basketball instigated its men s national team program in 2005, USA national teams have compiled a 62-1 overall win-loss record, and have captured gold at the 2012 London Olympics, 2010 FIBA World Championship, 2008 Beijing Olympics and 2007 FIBA Americas Championship, while earning a bronze medal at the 2006 FIBA World Championship London Olympics The 2012 version of the U.S. Olympic Men s Basketball Team was an electrifying, high-octane scoring team. An 8-0 record, a second consecutive Olympic gold medal showing, and an average margin of victory of 32.1 points a game, were just some of the impressive numbers the men compiled in London. Featuring a 12-man roster overflowing with basketball talents, the golden 2012 U.S. team featured five members of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team - Carmelo Anthony, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Chris Paul and Deron Williams; five members of the 2010 USA World Championship Team - Tyson Chandler, Kevin Durant, Andre Iguodala, Kevin Love and Russell Westbrook; and two USA National Team newcomers Anthony Davis and James Harden. The team was again under the expert handling of USA Basketball National Team Managing Director Jerry Colangelo, Hall of Fame head coach Mike Krzyzewski, and assistant coaches Jim Boeheim, Mike D Antoni and Nate McMillan. A triple-double from James helped the U.S overpower Australia and advance to the semifinals. The USA finished off Argentina in the semis to advance to the gold medal game.
