Season Outlook WOMEN OF TROY USC Women s Basketball Season Outlook H ead coach Mark Trakh hasn t bought any rabbit s feet yet, but he has been keeping his eyes peeled for lucky pennies. And he may start looking into purchasing some stock in ankle braces and medical tape. Long story short, the USC roster has taken more than its fair share of hits in the past couple seasons. But it seems coach Trakh (knock on wood) may finally have picked up a good penny after all, because the USC women s basketball team is (knock again) looking good to go. Hopefully luck will be on our side and we ll stay healthy, Trakh said. I m cautiously optimistic as always, but I m looking forward to us being successful. I think we can be really good if we can stay healthy. The first thing fans and followers will notice about this season s pack of Women of Troy is some faces who haven t quite been on the forefront of the Trojan lineup in a while. Four players who redshirted last season due to injuries et al are back in the mix. Standout point guard Camille LeNoir has healed up following hip surgery; Markisha Lea steps back in as a senior with cartilage intact in her knee; Brynn Cameron sustained her second hip surgery and gave birth to her first child on her way back to the court; and the nation s top recruit Jacki Gemelos has a healthy knee to bring her back into the spotlight for her eager teammates and fans. Jacki has been working hard to get back to us, Trakh said. I think she ll be fun to watch and with Camille healthy we have a lot of potential in our guards. Further balancing out the departure of five 2007 graduates are a pair of seniors who have extended their Trojan careers in unique ways. Kate Henderson and Allison Jaskowiak were freshmen together in Henderson wound up transferring after that season, but has since returned to USC and has worked her way back into the picture. Jaskowiak was granted a medical redshirt for that freshman season and has thus received another season of eligibility that allows her to return for her final year on the Trojan roster. Who knew that hiding under that penny would be the equivalent of a starting lineup AND a sub? Trakh would have traded more than a penny for half that same pool of talent last season, when USC s depleted lineup (Jaskowiak included) limped into a rocky start to the season, reached the semifinals of the Pac-10 Tournament for the third straight season, winding up just short of a spot in the NCAA Tournament with a overall record. There s only one reason we didn t go to the tournament last year and that was our injuries, Trakh said. Fortunately for Trakh and Co., the abnormally shaky season did not shake the Trojans hunger to persevere. With LeNoir, Cameron and Jaskowiak alone back on the court, USC taps back into the talent pool that helped spark the Women of Troy s resurgence to the NCAA Tournament scene with back-to-back postseason runs in and Add to that the highly anticipated arrival of Gemelos, and throw in the senior experience of Lea and Símone Jelks, and Trakh may well allow himself to cut back on the penny search and be able to enjoy watch-

WOMEN OF TROY Season Outlook ing his squad in action. We re excited about the season. Even though we ve already had one season-ending injury, Trakh said, referencing the torn ACL of incoming freshman Stefanie Gilbreath, suffered just before the 2007 McDonald s All-American Game. We hope to stay injury-free the rest of the way. I m definitely excited about the potential we have. We lost a very unique and special group of seniors, but we have good kids coming in this year, talent- and personality-wise. Of particular note is the backcourt strength on the roster. The departure of All-Pac-10 guard Shay Murphy (now in the WNBA) and assists-leader Jamie Hagiya put a dent in the lineup that the LeNoir-Gemelos combination should adequately fill. Both have deft ball-handling skills and a keen eye for distribution, as well as a dangerous perimeter attack. Offguard Cameron was USC s top scorer as a freshman before hip injuries cut into her time on the floor, but her sharp-shooting abilities from 3-point range remain, and her return will truly help open up USC s many scoring options. I think the backcourt can be very dynamic, Trakh said. It s a backcourt that can put points on the board. Having Camille and Jacki out there healthy will be exciting to watch. Brynn is one of the best shooters in country, and we have some new kids to add to the depth. Lined up to add that depth charge to the backcourt is transfer Heather Ollie Oliver, a member of the Australian Under- 21 National Team, which won silver at the U-21 Women s World Championships this summer. Ollie is a great athlete, Trakh said. We also have plenty of other back as well. Hailey Dunham has been working very hard; Símone Jelks is back to provide her great defense and has worked hard on her offensive game; Aarika Hughes, we re expecting great improvements from her. She s going to be a great for us. And Nicole Berberet will work hard as always. She and Lisa Yamasaki were both helpful additions to the team last season. In the paint, although center Chloé Kerr and power forward Jamie Funn also have graduated, junior Nadia Parker and sophomore Morghan Medlock already have proven capable understudies ready to take a go-to role in the key. Parker has progressed into one of the more athletic and tenacious posts in the Pac-10, with great shot-blocking ability and a knack for the boards. Medlock earned Pac-10 All- Freshman honorable mention in and was the lone member of USC s topranked freshman class to appear in every game, returning as a true sophomore with a versatile game that will keep defenses guessing. Chloé and Jamie were smart and positionally correct, Trakh said of his departed posts. They really knew how to run our system. But I do think this year s players can step up. Markisha Lea can jump out of the gym, and Nadia Parker has just continued to improve in leaps and bounds. Freshman Kari LaPlante brings us some much-needed height, and Morghan Medlock has been working hard to really improve her game and be a real matchup problem for our front lines. Medlock s fellow sophomores Dunham and Hughes both encountered injuries that limited playing time in their first seasons at Troy, but each proved themselves as impact players with strong games at the guard slots. Meanwhile, experience and versatility will enable Jaskowiak and Kate Henderson to transition between guard and forward slots. And perhaps even more importantly, their leadership in all respects will be key to USC s success in Allison, you can t replace her Chloé Kerr Women of Troy

Season Outlook WOMEN OF TROY defense, Trakh said of Jaskowiak. She s our heart and soul, our leader. And Kate will really help with the chemistry on the team because of her mature leadership. USC will redshirt two players for the year, as Gilbreath a top-10 ranked recruit has undergone surgery to mend her torn ACL, and Fordham University transfer Daniela Roark will redshirt her first season at USC per NCAA rules. If all goes as planned (knock on wood once again), the Women of Troy will have 11 returning players and four newcomers set to hit the floor for their campaign. Schedule-wise, the preseason is peppered with plenty of solid opponents, and once again the Pac-10 will present a wild ride. In order to build some momentum into conference play and better then fifthplace Pac-10 finish from last year, the Trojans have a series of tough contests lined up against several powerful programs. Our schedule is competitive, Trakh said. We have some big nonconference games against Georgia, Virginia Tech, Michigan, Colorado, Nebraska and Utah. First on the docket is a trip to Big West Conference power UC Santa Barbara on Nov. 11. A week later, the Trojans will hold their home opener with a face-off against Colorado, which USC faced and beat last season in Boulder, Colo. The Women of Troy will be spending Thanksgiving in the Bahamas this year, joining Virginia Tech, Georgia and Prairie View A&M in the Freeport Division of the Junkaroo Jam at Grand Bahama Island. Upon returning stateside, the Trojans stay local with a quick visit to Cal State Fullerton on Nov. 30 before setting up shop at the Galen Center once more on Dec. 3 to host Utah. USC lost a tough one to the Utes last season on the road, and so will be looking to avenge things and build up some extra momentum for the stretch into conference action. A nonconference road trip will take the Trojans through another revenge opportunity with a Dec. 8 visit to Nebraska, which upended the Women of Troy at the Galen Center in Two days later, USC will be in Ann Arbor to square off against Michigan a team the Trojans have never before faced. Upon returning home, Trakh and his coaching staff will get their first opportunity to face a very familiar program. Four years after moving from Pepperdine to USC, Trakh and assistants Jody and Derek Wynn and Kai Felton play host to the Waves on Dec. 15. The Trojans last faced Pepperdine in , winning while Trakh was at the Waves helm. The programs have not faced since that time, making this season s showdown at USC an interesting collision of Trakh s collegiate coaching experiences as well as an opportunity for the Trojans to extend an undefeated all-time record against the Waves. The final pair of nonconference games come Dec at the second annual Women of Troy Classic this year bringing Hawai i, Grambling State and Portland State to the Galen Center. All told, the USC schedule contains seven teams that reached the 2007 NCAA Tournament (Georgia, Prairie View A&M, Nebraska, Arizona State, California, Stanford and Washington) and three teams that ended the year ranked in the top-25 (No. 13/13 Georgia, No. 10/8 Arizona State and No. 5/16 Stanford). Four of those NCAA teams hail from the Pac-10, hinting at another competitive and unpredictable conference season. It s always a battle in the Pac-10, but we re looking forward to it, Trakh said. I m cautiously optimistic as always, but eager to get this team on the court ready for a successful season.

COACHING STAFF Head coach Mark Trakh THE MARK TRAKH FILE Fourth season at USC 14 years of collegiate head coaching experience 27 years of head coaching experience 11 years at Pepperdine: (.618) 13 years at Brea Olinda HS: (.887) Two-time WCC Coach of the Year ( ) City of Brea Hall of Fame Inductee Southern California High School Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame Inductee Eight total postseason appearances Five NCAA Tournament appearances Three WNIT appearances Four conference titles (4 WCC) COACHING STAFF Long Beach State 1981 Fourth Season at USC 15th Season Overall Mark Trakh has proven a successful leader for the Women of Troy, leading his squad to the NCAA tournament in his first two seasons at USC before an injury-plagued season kept the Trojans just short of the postseason. His USC squads have reached the semifinals of the Pac-10 Tournament for three straight years. Trakh now enters his fourth season at the helm of the Trojan women s basketball program and 14th season as a collegiate head coach, with a USC record of (.611) and career record of (.616). Now with his 250th career win in the books, Trakh is striding on in his USC career, eager to see his newest recruits in action alongside his previously injured 2006 bluechip player Jacki Gemelos. Gemelos headlined a group of four newcomers considered the nation s No. 1 recruiting class entering in The injury bug held tight to the USC roster in , when Trakh had just a handful of healtyh scholarship players and three top players sidelined throughout the year. Still, Trakh and his Trojans made adjustments and extended their win streak over rival UCLA to five in a row and pushed through Pac-10 play to reach the semifinals once again, finishing the year with a overall mark. The season marked a gutsy effort by Trakh s Trojans, who reached the NCAA Second Round for the second straight season. Under Trakh s guidance, USC finished and took fourth in the Pac-10 while placing three players on all-conference lists. In his first year at Troy, Trakh followed up a successful 11-year stand as head women s basketball coach at Pepperdine by propelling the Women of Troy to their first NCAA tournament appearance in seven years. That season, Trakh led the Trojans to a second-place tie in the Pac-10 at 12-6 to help earn a long-awaited place in the 2005 NCAA tournament. There, USC posted a first-round win over Louisville before falling on a last-second basket to NCAA runnerup Michigan State. Trakh, 50, was hired on April 14, 2004, becoming the seventh head coach in USC history. I am very grateful for this opportunity, said Trakh. USC is a wonderful institution and I am honored to be a part of it. We will work very hard to make USC basketball one of the top teams in the country once again. During his time at Pepperdine, Mark proved that he deserved this position, said USC athletic director Mike Garrett. We were very impressed with his teams success both on the court and in the classroom. He is a perfect fit to our current staff of outstanding head coaches. In 11 seasons ( ) as the Waves head coach, Trakh built a nationally recognized program that made six postseason appearances (2000, ) NCAA; 1999, 2001, 2004 WNIT) and dominated play in the West Coast Conference, winning four of the last six league titles. He was twice named WCC Coach of the Year (1999, 2002). His teams compiled a (.618) overall record at Pepperdine and a (.643) mark in the WCC. Under his leadership, Pepperdine posted six 20-win seasons. Trakh coached two WCC Players of the Year Rasheeda Clark (2000) and Tamara McDonald (2002). Clark went on to become Pepperdine s first WNBA pick. In total, Trakh has had seven players advance to the professional ranks, both internationally and in the U.S. More impressive is the fact that in 11 years at Pepperdine, Trakh graduated each and every one of his student-athletes (100% graduation rate). Over his last seven seasons in Malibu, Trakh s teams accounted for an overall record of (.678) and a (.776) record in the WCC. Pepperdine s conference winning percentage during that time topped all member schools. In those seven years, the Waves also captured three regular-season titles outright while tying for another, and finished second twice and third once. In each of those seven campaigns, Pepperdine tallied at least 10 conference victories, including a school-record 12 wins in 2000 and In 2004, his squad finished overall, tied for second in the WCC at The team made their sixth-straight postseason appearance by advancing to the Women s NIT. The previous year marked the third time in four years that the Waves advanced to the NCAA Tournament. The 2003 squad won 14 of its last 17 games to reach the 20-win plateau for the sixth consecutive season, becoming the first team in WCC history to accomplish the feat. Trakh earned his two WCC Coach of the Year honors in 2002 and Pepperdine compiled a 23-8 record in 2002, captured the conference championship and advanced to the NCAAs. In Women of Troy

In addition to winning a school-record 12 conference games, the Waves reached the championship game of the WCC Tournament for the second straight year. Trakh came to Pepperdine after serving as the head girls basketball coach at Brea (Calif.) Olinda High for 13 seasons ( ). During his tenure, the Ladycats emerged as a nationally prominent program, compiling a cumulative record of (.887) and earning annual rankings from USA Today. His teams captured four California state championships (1989, 1991, 1992 and 1993), six CIF Southern Section titles (1986, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992 and 1993) and 11 consecutive Orange League crowns. Brea Olinda High did not lose more than two games during any of Trakh s final five seasons, rolling to an amazing record of (.953). Several of his players went on to enjoy successful collegiate careers, including ex-usc standout and current assistant coach Jody (Anton) Wynn. Trakh is a member of the City of Brea Hall of Fame and the Southern California High School Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame. A 1981 graduate of Long Beach State with a bachelor s degree in journalism and a teaching credential, Trakh also taught English at Brea Olinda. He also attended Fairleigh Dickinson and Fullerton Community College before transferring to LBSU. He served as assistant boys varsity basketball coach at Western High in Anaheim, Calif. Born on May 31, 1955, Trakh prepped at Lakeland Regional High in Wanque, N.J., where he played both baseball and basketball. Trakh is the godfather to Derek and Jody Wynn s daughter, Jada. 8

Jody Wynn is no stranger to USC basketball. The fourth-year Trojan women s assistant basketball coach was a four-year letterwinner at Troy ( ) and a former starting guard, playing under her maiden name of Jody Anton. Her familiarity with USC basketball is matched by a close relationship with head coach Mark Trakh, who was Wynn s high school coach leading into her Trojan playing career. Wynn teamed back up with Trakh at Pepperdine, serving as a Waves assistant coach for eight seasons ( ) before moving over with Trakh to USC for Wynn now enters her 12th year as an assistant coach. After back-to-back NCAA Second Round appearances in her first two seasons as an assistant at USC, Wynn has made seven trips to the NCAA Tournament three as a player, three times coaching at Pepperdine, and twice coaching at USC. USC 1996 Fourth Season at USC to the NCAA Tournament. The Waves posted six 20-win seasons and captured four West Coast Conference championships. Her first season in the coaching ranks at USC brought Wynn back to familiar territory as the Trojans tied for second in the Pac-10 and rolled into the NCAA Tournament for the first time since During Wynn s playing career at USC, the Trojans compiled a cumulative record of (.693), won the 1994 Pac-10 Conference championship and made three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances from Wynn played for three head coaches while at USC, including Marianne Stanley (1993), Cheryl Miller ( ) and Fred Williams (1996). Wynn enjoyed her best season as a junior in 1995, starting 27 games and averaging 8.2 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists a contest. Her former teammates included the WNBA s In Malibu, Wynn helped lead Pepperdine to six postseason appearances, including three bids Assistant coach Cal State Fullerton 1996 Fourth Season at USC COACHING STAFF COACHING STAFF Assistant coach Jody Wynn Derek Wynn enters his fourth season as part of the USC women s basketball coaching staff and his ninth season in the collegiate ranks, preparing the Trojans to aim for a thids NCAA appearance in four seasons since arriving at Troy. Under head coach Mark Trakh, Wynn spent five years ( ) as an assistant at Pepperdine, helping lead the Waves to five postseason appearances, three West Coast Conference titles (2000, 2002, 2003) and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament each of those seasons. Prior to joining the Waves staff, Wynn spent six seasons ( ) as the assistant boys basketball coach at Upland (Calif.) High. There, Wynn helped the Highlanders earn five consecutive CIF Southern Section playoff berths. The 1996 and 1997 teams captured the Baseline League championship, while the 1999 team notched a school-best 25-4 mark. Wynn served as head coach of Upland s freshman boys basketball team for two seasons ( ). In 1997 he coached the South Junior College All-Star team at the Eddie Jones All-Star Game. During his time at Upland, Wynn coached 12 athletes who went on to play collegiate basketball, including six Division I players. These athletes include Orlando Huff, who played at Fresno State and then for the NFL s Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals, Desmond Penigar, who played at Utah and was the 2004 leading scorer and Rookie of the Year in the NBA Developmental League, and Kirk Snyder, who played at Nevada and was a 2004 first round draft pick (11th overall) of the NBA s Utah Jazz. Galen Center 255,000 square feet 10,258 seats Home of USC Basketball and Volleyball Nothing says more about the growth and success of the university than our new mecca the Galen Center. USC Athletic Director Mike Garrett One hundred and twenty-four years ago, USC founders envisioned an oncampus arena to further unify the Trojan community.in 2006, that dream became reality with the opening of the Galen Center new home to Troy s basketball and volleyball programs. It didn t take long for the Galen Center to make the record books. When USC hosted UCLA in women s basketball, the sell-out crowd was the first in program history, and the attendance of 9,749 set a new mark for the Womeno f Troy and broke the Pac-10 record for a conference game. The new center puts the Trojan teams on an appropriately impressive stage, allowing current and future USC squads to strut their stuff in a 255,000 square-foot arena with 10,258 seats, and utilize new locker rooms for home and visitors as well as a weight room and medical training room. An attached 45,000 square-foot pavilion contains additional practice room with three courts along with space for coaches and administrative offices. Galen also houses the Athletic Department Hall of Fame as well as function rooms, a ticket office, concession stands and merchandise stores for visitors to the new complex. Built with the entire community in mind, the Galen Center opens its doors to youth and high school sporting events when the Trojans aren t on centercourt. Still, athletics aren t the only events to touch down at the Galen Center, however. The venue also will play host to concerts, commencement ceremonies, community events, lectures, meetings, shows, pageants and more. 10
