4 Mac Attack Doctrine for Beating Zone Defenses 1. The most important element in beating a zone defense is winning the rebounding war. Second chance points are plentiful against zone defenses. Always place players in a position to rebound using a triangle. 2. The faster a team is down the floor the better their chances are of beating the zone before it has a chance to set up. 3. Swing the ball. Move the ball from corner to corner making the zone defenders shift from their assignments. 4. Draw Two. Use the dribble to attack two defenders at once. Get the defense to commit to stopping penetration and you will get open looks. 5. Spacing. 6. Develop a great inside and outside attack. Take great shots from the perimeter to draw the defense out and then use the paint to breakdown the defenses game plan. 4

6 Play #1 Guard (1) passes the ball to either wing. Offside forward (4) flashes to high post area looking to pin high defender on hip/back. Play #1 Continued.. After passing to wing (2), guard will exchange with offside wing (3). Ball is reversed from one wing to the other. 6

7 Play #1 Continued.. Once wing (3) receives reversal pass. Offside wing (2) flashes through the key to low post. Low post (5) sets back screen for high post (4) who looks for lob pass from wing (3) or moves to short corner looking for jump shot. 7

8 Play #2 Play begins with guard (1) passes to either wing. After passing guard (1) exchanges with offside wing (3). Offside post (4) flashes to high post area. Play #2 Continued.. Ball is reversed from wing (2) to offside wing (1). 8

9 Play #2 Continued.. On reversal pass offside wing (2) flashes through high post area. High post (4) sets a screen on high side defender for wing (2). Wing (2) will double back off of screen set by low post (5). 9

10 Play #3 Play begins with guard (1) passing to either wing. After passing to wing (2) guard (1) exchanges with offside wing (3). Offside low post (4) flashes to high post area. Play #3 Continued.. Ball is reversed from wing (2) to offside wing (1). 10

11 Play #3 Continued.. After reversal pass to wing (1) offside wing (2) flashes through high post area to ballside short corner. Play #3 Continued.. High post (4) moves out to set screen and roll with wing (1). Wing (1) should look for penetration to the basket or a drive and pitch to offside wing (2). 11

13 Play #1 Play begins with guard (1) passing to wing (2) who then passes to corner (4). Play #1 Continued.. After passing to corner (4) wing (2) cuts through ballside. This occupies 3/5th of defense. Guard (1) moves towards ball. 13

14 Play #1 Continued.. Corner (4) will pass ball back to guard (1). Corner (4) will set screen on outside low defender in the 2-3 zone for wing (2). Wing (2) pops out to corner for shot. NOTE: After screening (4) should open up to the basket pinning defense on hip and looking for dump in pass from wing (2). 14

15 Play #2 Guard (1) passes to high post (5) who flashes up from high post area. Play #2 Continued.. High post (5) will initiate the reversal pass to offside guard (2). On pass guard (1) will cut through key to corner. Offside wing (3) will cut through to ballside wing area. Ball is passed to corner (1). 15

16 Play #2 Continued.. When ball is in the corner high post (5) will dive to low block. Low post (4) will flash to high post. If post is not open, corner (1) will pass back to wing (3) who passes to guard (2). Play #2 Continued.. After passing to guard (2) wing (3) will set a down screen on outside low defender in 2-3 defense. Corner (1) will pop up for pass and jump shot. 16

17 Play #3 Play begins with pass to wing (2). Low post (5) sets back screen on low side defender in the zone. Offside wing (3) drops down to the corner. Play #3 Continued.. After setting screen on low side defender wing (2) throws a skip pass to corner (3). On pass low post (5) sets screen on low middle defender. High post (4) flashes to open area looking for pass from corner (3). 17

18 Play #3 Continued.. This diagram shows the middle screen action from low post (5) for high post (4) and pass from corner (3). 18

19 Play #4 Play begins with low post (5) flashing high for a pass from guard (1). Low post (4) flashes up to set screen on high side defender. Offside wing pins low side defender in low block area. Play #4 Continued.. High post (4) sets flare screen for guard (1). Post (5) passes to guard (1) looking for jump shot or wing (2). 19

20 Play #4 Continued.. If guard (1) is unable to get jump shot off, pass should go to wing (2) in low post. High post (4) flashes into the high post area after setting screen for guard (1). Post (5) flashes low Wing (3) moves high looking to become pressure release. 20

21 Play #5 This plays uses a flex series to set screens for open looks verses a 2-3 zone. Play begins with guard (1) passing to baseline runner (3) in the corner. Ballside low post (4) sets screen on middle low defender. Play #5 Continued.. Ball is reversed from baseline runner (3) to guard (1) who passes to guard (2). 21

22 Play #5 Continued.. Low post (5) moves out to corner. Guard (2) should look to pass ball to corner (5). Low post (4) sets screen on low side defender in defense. Baseline runner (3) looks for gaps in the zone after screen. 22

24 Double Stack Continuity This continuity offense begins with guard (1) passing to wing (3) opposite of the post stack. Wing (2) cuts behind double stack to the short corner. Double Stack Continuity Continued.. Wing (3) passes to short corner (2). 24

25 Double Stack Continuity Continued.. If pass does not go to short corner (2) then wing (3) makes a reversal pass to guard (1) who dribbles to stack side. Guard (1) passes to wing (2). NOTE: Posts can set screens during this time. Double Stack Continuity Continued.. After pass from guard (1) to wing (2) the wing (3) becomes the corner. 25
