9 East Stroudsburg University enters its 28th season under head coach Jerry Sheska in a familiar position as the preseason favorite in the PSAC East, but is coming off an unfamiliar conclusion to the 2008 season. ESU opened the year with a 15- record, only to see two losses at the end of the regular season turn into two more overtime setbacks, both in the PSAC semifinals and NCAA first round, bringing an abrupt end to yet another 15-win season for Sheska and the Warriors - the 14th in the last 16 years. The final win of the year was the 400th of Sheska s distinguished career which includes 15 PSAC titles and 16 NCAA Division II playoff appearances. The 2009 edition of the Warriors will look to rekindle that tradition led by five seniors with All-PSAC honors during their careers - back Danny Drago, midfielders Shane McFarlane and Jason Rudder, forward Toric Robinson and goalkeeper Larry Pokrywa. Drago leads the Warriors from the back as a two-time All-American and one of the top defenders in the country. He has started all 67 games in his career, leading the Warriors to a record and two PSAC championships in his three seasons and has also contributed nine career goals. Senior Trevor Kelley and redshirt junior Michael Kane are also returning starters, with Kelley in his third year at back and Kane in his second year at sweeper. Freshman Suane McLeish (St. Elizabeth, Jamaica) is expected to start as well. They will be joined in the back by junior Drew Repsher, sophomore Josh Arcona and freshmen Herick Santos (Sao Paolo, Brazil) and Steve Sollecito. Pokrywa, a two-time All-Region goalkeeper and first team All-PSAC and PSAC championship game MVP as a sophomore, has 22 shutouts and a 0.77 goals against average (tied for the school record) in 4 career starts. He will be pushed by junior Troy Hernandez, who made seven starts last season, and senior Chris Duggan. The attack will be led by Robinson and McFarlane, both three-year starters, and bolstered by the return of Rudder, who was limited by injuries a year ago. Robinson is a three-time All-PSAC selection in the midfield and will move up front as a senior. A gifted playmaker, he has 24 career assists (tied for sixth in school history) and has led ESU in assists in each of the last three years, including three goals and eight assists last season. Robinson should help compensate for the loss of All- Americans Roshane Ellison, the Regional Player of the Year with 17 goals, and Jason Shegda, who scored seven goals. McFarlane, all-conference his first two seasons and one of the most skilled players SEASON OUTLOOK/ROSTER in the PSAC, has nine career goals and four assists and will patrol the central midfield. Rudder s return gives the Warriors another dangerous player on the wing or at forward as he returns to the form of his sophomore year, when he was first team All- PSAC with six goals and four assists. The rest of the midfield includes several promising players who will contribute in starting or reserve roles. Sophomore Jeremy Cheeseman made eight starts last year and Josh Inman and Greg Schook should contend for playing time. Sophomores Jussi Halonen (Joensuu, Finland/Brevard NC) and Dominick Frabizio (Dowling) are both transfers and freshman Khris Wayne Wallace (Westmoreland, Jamaica) will also bolster the midfield. Robinson should have a standout year at forward and can become the seventh ESU player to be named All-PSAC for all four years of his career. Sophomores Kyle Niemann (four goals, three assists), Matt Ramspacher and Bobby Wynn are back for the 2009 season and three newcomers may also play key roles - senior Tom Ehrlich (Liberty HS/Lock Haven), junior Shastri Spencer (Notre Dame HS/Monroe NY) and freshman Kevin Lombardo. Ehrlich had five goals and six assists in his career at Lock Haven and Spencer had 12 goals and 11 assists in two years at Monroe Roster No. Name Pos. Class Ht. Wt. 16 THE PSAC PSAC Overview Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. The most recent enhancement came during the academic year when the PSAC expanded for the first time in its rich history, adding full-time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the one associate. All of the league s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest onestate conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest footballplaying conference in the NCAA, and, with 2, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams into NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership s success has yielded 42 NCAA team and 228 individual title winners. While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC s estimated 6,200 participants are honored each year as Scholar-Athletes for maintaining a grade-point average of.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s. Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, eight league schools also compete at the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 118,000 students and claim over 670,000 alumni, including 40,000 who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions. 17 ESU SOCCER HISTORY This will be the 82nd season of men s intercollegiate soccer competition at East Stroudsburg. Since the program started in 1926, the Warriors have: Compiled a record of for a.659 winning percentage. Won 19 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championships including a stretch of 1 in the last 16 years. Made 0 postseason tournament appearances, playing in 21 NCAA tourneys (18 Division II and three Division I), three NAIA tourneys and six ECAC tourneys. Produced 29 All-American players (see list on page 22). The school has only had six coaches, three of whom (Howard DeNike, John Eiler and John McKeon) are members of the National Soccer Hall of Fame. The soccer program began at East Stroudsburg in 1926, the same year that the school became a four-year college. Professor Floyd Eastwood organized the first squad which played two games against Bethlehem High School and one against Allentown Prep. In 1927, seven games were scheduled which included one collegiate opponent, Temple University. Unfortunately, the team did not win a game in its first three seasons. In 1929, Eastwood resigned and Charles Vibberts took over as head coach with DeNike, who had played football at the school, as his assistant. On October 26, 1929, the school finally won its first soccer game, defeating Bucknell, 2-0. Vibberts coached only one season before DeNike, still in his 20s, took the reins and began a 22-season head coaching career. It didn t take him long to be successful. His second team in 191, featuring the play of two All-American players, defender Stanley Bochinski and forward Mal McCullough, finished undefeated at 7-0. In 1956, Eiler succeeded DeNike and served as the school s head coach for 10 years. Under Eiler, East Stroudsburg made its first tourney appearance in 1961, playing in the NAIA national playoffs. The team lost to Howard University, 4-, in a first-round match. The following year, the Warriors went all the way, winning the NAIA national ESU Men s Soccer Media Guide title by beating Park State College of Missouri in the semi-finals, 5-0, and Pratt Institute in the finals, 4-0. Goalie John Petronis posted a pair of shutouts. After three years competing in the NAIA tournament, the school faced new challenges in After going undefeated during the regular season, the team received a bid to the NCAA Soccer Championships as one of the 16 top teams in the nation. The play of Petronis and forward Rich Flaherty was a key for the Warriors, who beat Franklin and Marshall, 6-0, in their first-ever NCAA appearance before losing to Michigan State, 4-0, in the quarter-finals. The Warriors returned to the NCAA tourney in This time, the Warriors first round opponent was the University of Pittsburgh and Flaherty s two goals and Petronis 24 saves resulted in a 2-0 win. It was off to Michigan again as the ESSTC booters were paired in the quarter-finals against Michigan State. Although the result was the same, the game was much closer as the Spartans were taken into sudden-death overtime before winning, 2-1. Eiler retired from coaching after the season. Under new coach McKeon, the Warriors played the longest game in the school s history in They bowed to West Chester in a playoff game for an NCAA tournament berth on penalty kicks after the teams had battled without a goal for 158 minutes through regulation and seven overtime periods as darkness set in. In 1969, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference began championship competition in soccer and the Warriors won the first title, beating Lock Haven, 1-0, on a goal by Bob Davidson. The early 1970s featured the leaping, diving acrobatic play of goalie Bob Rigby, a First Team All-America selection as the nation s best goalie at any level. McKeon led the Warriors to four NCAA tournament appearances and four PSAC titles before retiring in Since then, the team has been led by coach Jerry Sheska, whose 26-year coaching record is with 15 PSAC championships and 16 NCAA tournament appearances. Sheska s 1985 team scored the most History and Highlights First Season First Coach - Floyd Eastwood First PSAC Championship , 1-0 over Lock Haven 19 PSAC Championships 1 Tournament Appearances 2 All-Americans one-sided victory in PSAC championship game history by trouncing Slippery Rock, 6-0. Shegda found the back of the net following a scramble inside the six-yard box, with the assists credited to junior Toric Robinson and senior Roshane Ellison. The score came 11 minutes after Luis Guerrero gave Millersville (16-2) a 2-1 lead with his first goal of the season following a free kick just outside the ESU penalty box. The Marauders controlled most of the next 10 minutes, but the Warriors made the ESU Men s Soccer Media Guide most of their opportunity as Shegda sent the game into overtime with his second goal of the afternoon. The winning goal was set up by a shot by Sean McLaughlin that was saved by ESU goalkeeper Larry Pokrywa, but Loughlin knocked the rebound in to put Millersville into the final. The Marauders will host California on Saturday with both schools looking for the first conference championship in school history. Pat Buffuto gave Millersville the lead 2:47 into the game with a goal assisted by McLaughlin and Ryan Kiley, but the Warriors responded minutes later. Shegda knocked in a header off a cross by Robinson to tie the game 7:0 into the contest, and the score remained deadlocked until the 79th minute. Pokrywa made seven saves for ESU, which held a edge in shots. Matt Langione had four saves for Millersville. Nov. 14, 2008 NCAA First Round Slippery Rock 1, ESU 0 (OT) MILLERSVILLE - Jeremy Deighton s header 5:06 into overtime gave Slippery Rock a 1-0 win over East Stroudsburg University in the first round of the NCAA Division II men s soccer playoffs and gave the Warriors their second straight overtime loss at Millersville s Biemesderfer Stadium. Deighton had several outstanding chances for Slippery Rock in the second half, knocking a header off the post and another just wide, and hit two shots that forced ESU goalkeeper Larry Pokrywa to make outstanding saves. Pokrywa had six saves in the game and ESU held a advantage in shots. Greg Blum made seven saves in goal for Slippery Rock. 17
