1 PAUL BROWN STADIUM (65,515) / OCTOBER 12, :00 PM / PANTHERS.COM CAROLINA PANTHERS (3-2) at CINCINNATI BENGALS (3-1) PANTHERS TRAVEL TO CINCINNATI FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 2006 After surviving a come-from-behind win over the Chicago Bears, the Carolina Panthers go on the road to face the AFC North leading Cincinnati Bengals Sunday in a contest of division leaders. The Panthers hold on the NFC South was precarious as they trailed 21-7 in the second quarter last week, but a combination of Greg Olsen, Cam Newton, and Luke Kuechly plus several unlikely contributors enabled Carolina to secure a victory. It was a team victory that included some strong leadership and guys stepping up at key times to make contributions, says Carolina head coach Ron Rivera, who claimed his first victory against his former team in three tries. It was a turn of events that could not have happened without: Tight end Greg Olsen, who had two touchdown receptions against his former team among his six catches for 72 yards. Olsen s second touchdown catch came with 2:18 remaining to put the Panthers in front and left him as the team s leader in catches with 27 and touchdowns with four. Quarterback Cam Newton, who overcame a slow start to pass for 255 yards and two touchdowns while directing the Panthers offense. Newton s two touchdown passes gave him five for the season against one interception for a 94.6 quarterback rating. Linebacker Luke Kuechly, who led the Panthers in tackles with 15 while covering the field to help limit the Chicago offense to a field goal in the second half. In just his third season, the Cincinnati native and reigning AP Defensive Player of the Year is already approaching 450 tackles. Running backs Darrin Reaves and Chris Ogbonnaya, who were not on the Panthers roster when the season started, combined for 59 yards and a touchdown with DeAngelo Williams, Jonathan Stewart, and Mike Tolbert all sidelined with injuries. Reaves began camp as a free agent rookie from UAB while Ogbonnaya was signed last Monday before the game. However, the most pleasing aspect was that all three units offense, defense, and special teams contributed to the win. After a rough start, the Panthers limited the Bears to 110 yards and three points in the second half, thanks in large part to a defensive line that stiffened against the run and recorded three sacks after intermission and four for the game. Leading the charge was Charles Johnson, who had a sack and fumble recovery, to move within a half-sack of Mike Rucker for second place on the team s all-time list. He was joined by Kawann Short, whose sack and forced fumble ended the game, Wes Horton with a sack, and Dwan Edwards and Mario Addison, who split a sack. However, reaching Dalton will prove a difficult task against an offensive line that has allowed only sack this season. That could spell plenty of activity for Kuechly and fellow linebacker Thomas Davis as well as a secondary that picked off two passes last week as Thomas DeCoud and Roman Harper had one each. Offensively, the Panthers will try to mix and match in the backfield while Newton directs a passing game that is ranked 12th in the League. In addition to Olsen, rookie Kelvin Benjamin has provides an appealing target with 24 catches for a team high 367 yards while veterans Jerricho Cotchery and Jason Avant have combined for another 28 receptions. That production has come behind a line that is still adjusting to an offseason of change, but showed signs of progress against the Bears. The biggest play last week did not come from offense or defense, but special teams when rookie Philly Brown drew a punt receiving interference penalty and then alertly picked up the ball and returned it 79 yards for a touchdown for Carolina s first score. Later, kicker Graham Gano added a clutch 44-yard field goal to tie the score in the fourth quarter at 24 before Carolina s late game-winning score. I was very proud of how we fought and it is going to take a similar effort against a very good Cincinnati team that will be anxious to bounce back following a most difficult assignment last week, says Rivera. OLSEN AMONG NFL'S TOP TIGHT ENDS Through five games, tight end Greg Olsen leads the Panthers with 27 receptions and four receiving touchdowns. He is second on the team with 326 receiving yards. His receiving totals rank him among the top tight ends in the NFL this season. He ranks third among tight ends in receptions and receiving yards and is tied for third in touchdown receptions NFL RECEIVING YARDS LEADERS, TIGHT ENDS Player Rec. Smith University in Following 11 years coaching on the college level, Wilks entered the NFL coaching ranks in 2006 when he joined Panthers head coach Ron Rivera in Chicago. With Rivera serving as defensive coordinator and Wilks leading the Bears secondary, Chicago won the NFC Championship and advanced to Super Bowl XLI. The two reunited in 2010 in San Diego, helping the Chargers lead the NFL in total defense and pass defense. Wilks has been an important part of the Panthers coaching staff. Last season, Wilks directed a unit that helped the Panthers finish second in the NFL in total defense and sixth in passing defense. Defensive backs were responsible for 16 of the team s 20 interceptions, including a team-record four returned for touchdowns. Carolina also limited opponents to an 81.4 passer rating, which ranked 10th in the NFL. Wilks (9) played quarterback at Wilks secondary received signifi cant con-westributions from rookies and veterans alike. Charlotte. Undrafted rookie cornerback Melvin White started the last 10 games and posted two interceptions with one touchdown, while safety Robert Lester, another undrafted rookie, tallied three interceptions. 9 FAMILY TIES The Panthers coaching staff includes two members Mike Shula and Sam Mills III whose fathers are prominent football figures. Shula, the Panthers offensive coordinator, is the son of Don Shula, the NFL leader in career coaching victories with 347. Don Shula led the Miami Dolphins to two Super Bowl victories, including a perfect 17-0 season in He s an unbelievable sounding board, Mike said of his father, now 84. Whenever I ve had to ask tough questions, I ve always gone to him first because he s not going to give me the Mike Shula answer that I want to hear he s going to give me the answer that I need to hear. The Panthers assistant defensive line coach, Mills, is the son of former Panthers linebacker and linebackers coach Sam Mills, Jr., who lost an inspiring battle with cancer six years ago. A starting linebacker on the Panthers inaugural team in 1995, Sam Mills, Jr., propelled the Panthers to their first victory with an interception return for a touchdown against the New York Jets (10/15/95) and he is the only Sam Mills, III player in the team s Hall of Honor.
