N E W S R E L E A S E ATLANTA FALCONS (2-1) VS. CAROLINA PANTHERS (2-1) Panthers open NFC South play with visit from Falcons SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 2008 BANK OF AMERICA STADIUM, 1:00 PM (EST) THIS WEEK S GAME After three weeks of mixed results in non-divisional play the Panthers host NFC South rival Atlanta Sunday at Bank of America Stadium. The teams have identical 2-1 records after the Panthers dropped a decision at Minnesota while the Falcons thumped Kansas City Carolina jumped out to a 10-0 advantage over the Vikings, but fell victim to mistakes and turnovers while failing to generate a ground game for the first time this season. Quarterback Jake Delhomme was sacked five times and the Panthers committed 12 penalties in gaining 47 yards on the g r o u n d. The Panthers averaged 128 yards rushing in the first two games of the season and allowed only four sacks in the two games before Minnesota. In the second half we didn t produce enough offensively to give ourselves a chance, says head coach John Fox, whose team had 73 yards after intermission. Defensively, I thought our guys kept us in the game, but we just never got anything rolling offensively in the second half. Wide receiver Steve Smith returned to the lineup after a two-week absence and caught four passes for 70 yards, but the Panthers could not complement the passing attack with a consistent running game. The 47 yards on the ground were the fewest for Carolina since gaining 43 versus New Orleans (11/25/07) and prevented the Panthers from rushing for 100 yards in three consecutive games for the first time since Weeks of the 2006 season. The Panthers ran just 49 offensive plays as the Vikings maintained more than an eight minute time of possession advantage and Delhomme threw on 29 of those, completing 17 for 191 yards with no touchdowns and no i n t e r c e p t i o n s. For the season, he has thrown one touchdown pass with one interception as rookie Jonathan Stewart has proven to be Carolina s most effective weapon near the goal line. Stewart scored on a two-yard run against the Vikings and has scored three of Carolina s four offensive touchdowns. Overall, the Panthers rank 27th offensively and kicker John Kasay has been their most consistent weapon. Kasay converted his only field goal attempt against the Vikings and has made all seven of his field goal attempts this season. His 365 career field goals are 10th in NFL history, one shy of Norm Johnson in ninth place. Two of the Panthers best defensive weapons have also come on special teams where punter Jason Baker is averaging 45.4 yards-per-punt with a net of 39.9, while Rhys Lloyd has put 12-of-14 kickoffs into the end zone and the Panthers rank third in the NFC in opponents kickoff drive start. That will be needed against an Atlanta offense that comes into the game ranked ninth in the League and will pit the Panthers against the League s leading rusher for the second straight week. Last week it was Adrian Peterson, who had 77 yards on 17 attempts, and this week Michael Tu r n e r comes into the game with a League best 366 yards. The Panthers have already faced LaDainian Tomlinson of San Diego, Peterson, and the League s fourth leading rusher in Bears running back Matt Forte in the first three weeks of the season before facing Tu r n e r. Carolina is ranked 18th in the NFL againstthe rush after that gauntlet and 11th overall. The strong rushing games have impacted Carolina s pass rush, but the Panthers recorded three sacks at Minnesota for their highest total of the season. Julius Peppers recorded his first of the year while rookie safety Charles Godfrey had the first of his career. Tyler Brayton and Charles Johnson split the third sack. For Peppers, it stretched his team record to The Panthers lone take-away against Minnesota was by cornerback Chris Gamble, who broke a second place tie with Mike Minter for career interceptions. It was Gamble s 18th career interception, seven behind leader Eric Davis. Gamble also scored on a 31-yard fumble recovery against the Chargers in the opening game of the season. It is going to take an outstanding effort against an Atlanta team that is playing well and has a lot of confidence, says Fox. The NFC South looks like it is going to be very strong and every division game takes on added i m p o r t a n c e. 9 WELCHOMME BACK In three starts since returning to the lineup after offseason Tommy John surgery on his right elbow, quarterback Jake Delhomme has completed 52-of-91 passes for 566 yards and one touchdown with one interception for a quarterback rating of Despite Carolina s setback at Minnesota in Week Three, the Panthers are 5-2 in Delhomme s last seven starts dating back to the end of the 2006 season. In those seven games, Delhomme has tossed 11 touchdowns to just two interceptions and produced a passer rating over four times. The Panthers have averaged 23.1 points-per-game in the last seven games started by Delhomme compared to just 13.6 points-per-game in the last 16 games in which he was not the starter. Indicative of his high level of play late in the game, Delhomme has directed 15 career gamewinning drives (including the playoffs) that put Carolina ahead for good in the fourth quarter or overtime, including 10 game-winning drives in the final two minutes or overtime. FROM THE POCKET ( Weekly comments from Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme) On the sack/fumble late in the second quarter -- The disappointing thing is that I was cocking back to throw it to Steve (Smith), who s wide open, running a corner route. Both 23 (Cedric Griffin) and 41 (Charles Gordon) jumped down on D.J. Hackett, so we were going to have a big play. Certainly it did change the momentum of the game, and that was unfortunate, but it was 0-0 coming out of halftime and we didn t play in the second half. So give them credit, they beat us; we didn t make any plays in the second half. On the last time he was under so much pressure -- I don t know. I really can t tell you. Maybe Chicago a few years back, in November (of 2005). But they re a good football team, and if you couldn t see that by watching film this week, then you re blind. I don t really have any idea how they re a 1-2 football team, and certainly Gus Frerotte gave them a spark today and he did a good job, but we d i d n t make any plays. We didn t give our defense any breathers today; that s for sure. On the penalties -- Absolutely they are frustrating. It was loud, but we knew that coming in. That s part of the deal. We need to get better in that area and we need to get better quick. We re playing an Atlanta team next that s obviously playing well; we re both 2-1 and it s a division game at home.

W I L L I A M S - S T E WA RT PROVIDE 1-2 PUNCH With the departure of running back DeShaun Foster, the club s all-time leading rusher with 3,336 yards on 851 attempts, Carolina will look to two young running backs to carry the ground attack in Third-year performer DeAngelo Williams is the team s top returning rusher after producing a career-high 717 yards and four touchdowns on 144 carries a year ago. Williams paced the Panthers ground attack at San Diego (9/7), producing 86 yards on 18 attempts for an average of 4.8 yards-per- c a r r y. The 86 yards were the fourth-highest total of his career, behind 121 yards at Arizona (10/14/07) and at Tampa Bay (12/30/07), and 114 yards versus St. Louis (11/19/06). Once the understudy to Foster, Williams will now serve as the mentor to rookie running back Jonathan Stewart, Carolina s first round (13th overall) selection in the 2008 NFL Draft. He made his NFL debut at San Diego (9/7) with 53 yards on 10 carries, but enjoyed his coming out party in Week Two versus Chicago (9/14). Stewart produced 76 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 13 attempts in the second half and was the catalyst offensively in Carolina s comeback victory over Chicago. Williams and Stewart have combined for 289 yards and three touchdowns on 70 attempts for an average of 4.1 yards-per-attempt through the first three games. TIGHT ENDS CONTINUE TO CONTRIBUTE One year after tight end Jeff King ranked second on the team with a career-high 46 receptions, the most by a Panthers tight end since Wesley Wa l l s 63 in 1999, second-year tight end Dante Rosario took center stage on Opening Day at San Diego (9/7). Rosario led all Panthers receivers with a career-high seven receptions, none more important than the 14-yard strike he corralled in the back of the endzone from quarterback Jake Delhomme as time expired. His seven receptions were more than he totaled during his entire rookie campaign (six) and the 96 receiving yards were also a career high. King and Rosario have combined for 16 receptions for 175 yards and one touchdown through the first three games.

SMITH AMONG LEAGUE S ELITE SINCE 2005 Despite playing with four different quarterbacks in 2007, wide receiver Steve Smith paced the Carolina receiving corps with 1,002 receiving yards and seven touchdowns on 87 receptions. Smith led the team in receiving for the third-consecutive season and became the first player in club history to post three consecutive 1,000-yard receiving seasons after accumulating 1,563 yards in 2005 and 1,166 yards in Since the start of the 2005 season, Smith ranks fifth in the NFL with 3,731 receiving yards, sixth with 273 receptions and tied seventh with 27 receiving touchdowns. Smith also moved within four of Muhammad s club-record yard receiving performances, tallying 118 yards at St. Louis (9/9), 153 versus St. Louis (9/16), 136 at Arizona (10/14) and 137 versus Dallas (12/22). With seven scores in 2007, the Lynwood, CA, native also became Carolina s all-time leader with 45 career touchdowns, surpassing Muhammad and Wesley Walls mark of 44. Of his 45 touchdowns, 37 have come through the air, two on the ground and six in the return game. Smith stands seven touchdown receptions behind Muhammad and Walls club-record of 44 receiving touchdowns. Smith made his 2008 season debut at Minnesota (9/21) after missing the first two games of the season serving a suspension and led the team with four receptions for 70 yards.

MOOSE SIGHTING Carolina welcomed back a familiar face when former wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad was signed as a free agent on February 28 after three seasons with the Chicago Bears. Muhammad is Carolina s franchise leader with 592 catches, 7,891 receiving yards and yard receiving games. He is tied for second all-time with 44 touchdowns and stands third with 268 points scored. Muhammad surpassed 10,000 career receiving yards with 59 yards on five receptions in Week Two versus Chicago (9/14). He currently ranks seventh among active wide receivers with 10,074 receiving yards, sixth with 756 receptions and eighth with 56 touchdown receptions. The one starter, center Ryan Kalil, was making his first-career start at the position in place of an injured Justin Hartwig, who started 15 games at center for Carolina in Two other starters from the finale at Tampa Bay, tackles Jordan Gross and Travelle Wharton, find themselves in new positions with Gross moving from right tackle to left tackle and Wharton moving inside to left guard from left tackle. Jeff Otah, the team s second first round selection (19th overall) in the 2008 NFL Draft, has started the first three games of his professional career at right tackle. Free agent acquisition Keydrick Vincents, who appeard in 49 games with 39 starts for Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Arizona since 2001, has started the first three games at right guard. 13 REVAMPED DEFENSIVE LINE TESTED EARLY The Carolina Panthers defensive line entered the 2008 season with only one starter, left defensive tackle Maake Kemoeatu, penciled in at the same position as the 2007 opener at St. Louis (9/09/07). Pro Bowl defensive end Julius Peppers, the club s all-time leader with 57.0 sacks, moves to right defensive end after six seasons on the left side to fill the void left by the retirement of long-time starter Mike R u c k e r. Tyler Brayton, an unrestricted free agent acquisition from Oakland, is the starter at left defensive end and Damione Lewis, who served primarily as a reserve in 2007, moves into the starting lineup after Kris Jenkins was traded to the New York Jets during the o f f s e a s o n. Here is a look at Carolina s starting defensive line last week at Minnesota (9/21) compared to the starting defensive line in the 2007 opener at St. Louis (9/09/07). The Panthers held all three backs under 100 yards rushing, limiting Tomlinson to 97 yards on 22 attempts, Forte to 92 yards on 23 attempts and Peterson to 77 yards on 17 attempts. Things don t get any easier for the defensive line, and the defense as a whole, this week as they welcome Falcons running back Michael Turner, the NFL s top rusher with 366 yards and five touchdowns on 59 attempts, to Bank of America Stadium on Sunday. BEASON BUILDING OFF BREAKOUT 2007 Middle linebacker Jon Beason, the club s first round (25th overall) selection in the 2007 NFL draft, led or tied for the team lead in tackles in 13-of-16 games as a rookie en route to notching a team-record 160 stops. He eclipsed the previous record of 158 established by Micheal Barrow in 1998 as well as Lester Towns club rookie record of 106 set in The former Miami Hurricane started the first four games of the season at weakside linebacker before moving to middle linebacker in Week Five after an injury to Dan Morgan. Beason added seven passes defensed, three quarterback hurries, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one interception. He recovered a fumble by Bears tight end Greg Olsen that was forced by linebacker Thomas Davis in the first quarter of Carolina s comeback victory versus Chicago (9/14).

HARRIS FORCES THE ISSUE One year ago strong safety Chris Harris stepped into the vacancy left by the retirement of long-time starter Mike Minter. He responded with one of the finest seasons by a Panthers defensive back in franchise history, leading the NFL with a club-record eight forced fumbles and finishing second on the team with a career-high 102 tackles. Harris finished the season playing a role in eight of C a r o l i n a s 30 take-aways, the most of any player on the defense, and enters his second season in Carolina as one of the leaders of an experienced secondary. Harris has started the 2008 season much the way he did the 2007 campaign, forcing a fumble by Chargers tight end Antonio Gates at San Diego (9/7), that was returned 31 yards by cornerback Chris Gamble for a touchdown. He finished the game tied with linebacker Na il Diggs for the team lead with 10 tackles. He was at it again versus Chicago (9/14), forcing a fumble by Bears tight end Greg Olsen that was again recovered by Gamble. The take-away led directly to Carolina s first touchdown of the game, a four-yard run by running back Jonathan Stewart five plays later. He ranks second to strong safety Chris Harris in tackles among defensive backs with 16 and leads the team with five passes defensed. The former Ohio State Buckege has also been a catalyst for the Panthers defense with regard to turnovers, playing a role in three of the team s four takeaways. In the season-opening victory at San Diego (9/7), Gamble recovered a fumble by Chargers tight end Antonio Gates that was forced by Harris, and returned it 31 yards for a touchdown. It was deja-vu in Week Two versus Chicago (9/14) as Gamble again recovered a fumble forced by Harris that led directly to Carolina s first touchdown of the game and helped ignite a come-from-behind victory. Last week at Minnesota (9/21), Gamble victimized Vikings quarterback Gus Frerotte in the first quarter for his first interception of the season. The theft was the 18th of his career and moved him into second place in franchise history ahead of former safety Mike Minter s 17, seven behind Eric Davis 25. Indicative of his accuracy on field goals, his 435 extra points are the fewest among the top 20 all-time scorers. His 365 field goals rank 10th all-time in NFL history, one behind Norm Johnson s 366 in ninth position, and his 35 made field goals from 50 yards or longer rank third in League history. Among active kickers, the 18-year veteran ranks ranks fifth in both points and field goals made and third in converted opportunities of 50 yards or longer. Indoor Streak Ends -- Carolina s loss last Sunday at Minnesota (9/21) ended a six-game winning streak in games played indoors dating back to the 2006 season. Ironically, the Panthers last loss indoors was a overtime defeat at Minnesota (9/17/06). Lloyd A Special Weapon -- Panthers kickoff specialist Rhys Lloyd has proven to be a valuable weapon for Carolina in the kicking game. Through the first three weaks of the season, Lloyd has reached the endzone on 12-of-14 kickoffs and is tied for first in the NFL with six touchbacks. Reverse The Trend -- Carolina will take the field Sunday versus Atlanta looking to reverse an interesting trend that has developed in the series with the Falcons over the last two years. The home team has not won a game in the series since Carolina defeated Atlana, 24-6, in December of 2005 at Bank of America Stadium. Carolina went on to beat Atlanta in the final game of the 2005 season at the Georgia Dome (1/01/06), 44-11, and the visiting team was a perfect 2-0 in both 2006 and 2007.
