N E W S R E L E A S E CAROLINA PANTHERS (6-2) AT OAKLAND RAIDERS (2-6) Panthers follow bye week with first trip to Oakland since 2000 SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 2008 MCAFEE COLISEUM, 4:05 PM (EST) THIS WEEK S GAME The second half of the season begins as the first half did for the Carolina Panthers on the road Sunday against an AFC West opponent. In the season opening game, Carolina pulled out a last second victory over the San Diego Chargers to propel the Panthers to a 6-2 record through eight games. The Panthers are at Oakland this week and the Raiders promise to be another stiff challenge for Coach John Fox and his team. Playing on the road is difficult any time and there are not many places more difficult than the Coliseum, says Fox. The Panthers last played October 26 when they rallied to defeat the Arizona Cardinals behind the passing combination of Jake Delhomme and Steve Smith and the running of DeAngelo Williams. It is an offensive formula that worked well during the first eight weeks as Delhomme compiled a quarterback rating of 88.7, Smith moved among the League leaders in receiving with 33 catches for 613 yards despite missing the first two games, and Williams rushed for 522 yards while sharing backfield duties with rookie Jonathan Stewart. In returning from offseason elbow surgery, Delhomme has completed over 60 percent of his passes for nearly eight yards per attempt and thrown nine touchdowns and five interceptions, four of which have come off d e f l e c t i o n s. Smith has compiled three consecutive 100-yard receiving games, with the most recent being a 117-yard, five catch, two touchdown performance against the Cardinals. One of those scores came on a 65-yard catch and run and his 18.6 yards per catch average is the best of his career. The 65- yard score against Arizona was the 49th touchdown of his career, which stretches his club career mark to three touchdowns ahead of wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad. Muhammad has returned to Carolina after a three-year absence to catch a team-high 37 receptions, including five for 38 yards against Arizona. His presence has also impacted a running game that saw Williams surpass the 100-yard mark against Arizona for the second time this s e a s o n. Williams gained 108 yards on 17 attempts versus the Cardinals and ignited the Panthers comeback from a 17-3 deficit with a 15-yard scoring run. He is bidding to join Stephen Davis and Anthony Johnson as only the third 1000-yard rushers in team history while sharing carries with Stewart, who has rushed for 362 yards and five touchdowns. The Panthers offensive numbers have been impressive considering that the starting offensive line has played together for less than two quarters the entire season. Center Ryan Kalil and rookie Jeff Otah have missed the last three games with ankle injuries after starters Jordan Gross and Travelle Wharton missed time earlier. In their last five games the Panthers have allowed two sacks of Delhomme, but will face a Raiders pass rush that has accumulated 19 sacks. Sacks have been hard to come by for the Panthers, who have 13 in eight games. Seven and a half of that total have come from defensive linemen Julius Peppers (four) and Charles Johnson (3.5) and it was Johnson who had both of the Panthers takedowns of Kurt Wa r n e r. The Cardinals threw 51 times against Carolina, but the Raiders offer a different offensive strength in a strong running game. Similar to the offense, the Panthers defense offer modest stats against the run, ranking 14th. Middle linebacker Jon Beason keys the unit with a team high 81 tackles while safety Chris Harris anchors the secondary with his ball hawking skills. If the game comes down to special teams, the Panthers rely on one of the N F L s best kickers in John Kasay, who surpassed Jan Stenerud for eighth place in NFL history against Arizona with his 374th field goal. Kickoff specialist Rhys Lloyd plays a big role in the Panthers kickoff coverage teams that rank third in the League while punter Jason Baker s 38.2 net average plays a significant role in Carolina s fourth ranked punt coverage u n i t. 2 HEAD COA C H E S Panthers head coach JOHN FOX (57-47 regular season, overall in Carolina) is in his seventh season with Carolina. Fox s 62 victories since 2002 rank as the ninth-most in the NFL during that span and make him the winningest coach in franchise history. His career in Carolina is highlighted by a Super Bowl appearance in 2003 and an NFC Championship appearance in The four consecutive playoff road victories he notched along the way tied the NFL record held by the Dallas Cowboys under Tom Landry. Fox may be at his best, h o w e v e r, when faced with adversity. In 2002, he took over a 1-15 squad and produced a 7-9 season, a six-game improvement in victories that marked the second-best improvement by a rookie head coach in the NFL since In 2007, Fox led Carolina to seven wins, the most by a team that started four different quarterbacks since Prior to coming to Carolina, Fox spent five years as the New York Giants defensive coordinator ( ). TOM CABLE (1-3 regular season, 1-3 overall) was named interim head coach of the Oakland Raiders on September 30, 2008, after serving as offensive line coach since In 2007, Cable s offensive line contributed to a Raiders offense that finished sixth in the NFL in both rushing and inside the 20 touchdown percentage. Prior to entering the NFL coaching ranks in 2006, Cable served as the offensive line coach and offensive coordinator at UCLA ( ). Before his tenure at UCLA, Cable was the head coach at the University of Idaho ( ) and also spent time at the University of Colorado ( ), the University of California ( ), UNLV (1991), Cal State-Fullerton (1990) and San Diego State (1989). The Raiders staked an early 17-7 advantage on two Tyrone Wheatley one-yard touchdown runs and a Sebastian Janikowski 26-yard field goal. Oakland worked with a short field on their first touchdown drive after Nnamdi Asomugha blocked a Todd Sauerbrun punt at the Panthers 33-yard line. Carolina opened the second half with a 15- play drive that consumed the first 7:57 of the third quarter and was capped by a 16-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jake Delhomme to fullback Brad Hoover, cutting the Oakland lead to After a seven-yard Amos Zereoue touchdown run gave the Raiders a lead with 9:16 remaining, Carolina scored 10 points in less than seven minutes, culminating with a one-yard touchdown pass from Delhomme to running back Nick Goings, to tie the score at 24 with 2:25 remaining in the contest. On the ensuing possession, a 38-yard pass interference penalty on cornerback Dante Wesley led to Sebastian Janikowski s 19-yard game-winning field goal. Delhomme finished the game completing 25-of-45 attempts for 299 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. Wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad led all receivers with eight receptions for 94 yards. THE SERIES S u n d a y s contest will mark the fourth meeting between the Panthers and Raiders during the regular season and the first since Oakland leads the all-time series 2-1 and earned a victory in the last meeting at Carolina (11/7/04). The Raiders were also victorious the last time the two teams met in Oakland, 52-9, at McAfee Coliseum (12/24/00). 6 TA K E - AWAYS A T R E N D U N D E R F OX The tenure of head coach John Fox has been marked by the team s good fortune of generating more turnovers than they give. Since Fox was named head coach in 2002, Carolina is tied for third in the NFL with 202 take-aways and tied for ninth with 115 interceptions. The performance of Carolina s defensive units since the 2002 season reflect the emphasis Fox places on the defensive side of the ball. Over the last six years ( ), Carolina has finished the season among the League s top-10 defensive units four times, highlighted by a second-place ranking in 2002 and a third-place ranking in Through the first eight games of the 2008 season, Carolina s current defensive unit ranks among one of the stingiest of Fox s tenure. Entering Week 10 action, Carolina ranks ninth in the NFL in total yards per game (294.4), ninth in passing yards per game (194.5) and fifth in scoring defense allowing 15.9 points per contest. 8 WELCHOMME BACK Entering 2008, the health and durability of quarterback Jake Delhomme s right elbow was perhaps the biggest question surrounding the Carolina Panthers. Delhomme has answered many of those questions with his performance through the first eight weeks of the season. Delhomme has directed Carolina to a 6-2 start, equalling the best start in team history previously achieved in 2003 and 2005, and helped the Panthers offense average 21.7 points per game. Here are a few other interesting notes regarding Delhomme: Compiled a record of 9-3 over his last 12 starts dating back to the final game of the 2006 season at New Orleans (12/31/06). In his last 12 starts, Delhomme has tossed 19 touchdown passes to just five interceptions. Has produced a quarterback rating over eight times over those 12 starts and recorded a completion percentage over 60.0 percent seven times. Carolina is 19-5 in games where Delhomme notches at least one touchdown pass and no interceptions, including a 15-0 mark since the start of the 2005 season. With a quarterback rating of versus Arizona (10/26), Carolina improved to 18-4 since 2003 in games where Delhomme posts a quarterback rating over Completed eight touchdown passes to just two interceptions and compiled an average quarterback rating of in five games at Bank of America Stadium in helping Carolina to a 5-0 mark at home in Earned NFC Offensive Player of the Week honors after completing 20-of-29 passes for 294 yards and two touchdowns with no intercpetions for a quarterback rating of versus Atlanta (9/28/08). Since arriving in Carolina via free agency prior to the 2003 season, Delhomme has compiled a record of during the regular season as the Panthers starting quarterback and tossed a franchise-record 106 touchdown passes. During that span, his 106 touchdown passes rank eighth in the NFL and fourth among quarterbacks currently in the NFC. Here is a look at where Delhomme s 106 touchdown passes since 2003 rank compared to other current NFC q u a r t e r b a c k s. P l a y e r Team Touchdown Passes Drew Brees New Orleans 131 Matt Hasselbeck S e a t t l e 120 Donovan McNabb Philadelphia 110 Jake Delhomme Carolina 106 Marc Bulger St. Louis 98 Delhomme has been perhaps most impressive in the fourth quarter with the game on the line, completing 371-of-616 attempts for 4,373 yards and 34 touchdowns with 19 interceptions for a passer rating of His 36 pass plays of 25 yards or more in the fourth quarter since 2003 rank second in the NFL and his 34 fourth quarter touchdown passes are also second in the League during that span. Indicative of his high level of play late in the game, Delhomme has directed 15 career game-winning drives (including the playoffs) that put Carolina ahead for good in the fourth quarter or overtime, including 10 game-winning drives in the final two minutes or overtime. FROM THE POCKET ( Weekly comments from Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme) On being 6-2 at the halfway point -- Certainly it s nice. 6-2 compared to 5-3 going into the break is huge. Hopefully we can look back on this game (vs. Arizona) down the line and say that it was a pivotal win for us. We ve given ourselves a chance. It s only eight weeks. We ve put ourselves in position. We ll freshen up this week and then get ready to go. If you look at it, you have six weeks of training camp, we ve already had eight games. That s 14 weeks. There are eight games left. You are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. It comes fast. Rest up and get healthy. Self scout yourselves this week coming up and get ready to go. On DeAngelo Williams -- That is what we expect. This wasn t like we had the upper hand and we could run the football and run the football. This was one of these dirty games, so to speak. He made some fabulous runs. I know we had some blocking going on, but he made some outstanding runs churning his feet and kept going. That was huge. You like to see guys get going. You are really starting to see that with him. On the win versus Arizona -- It was a character win. They have a very good football team. They don t lead their division for (no reason). They are a very talented offensive football team and they are a pretty solid defensive team. It didn t start like we wanted. We had an opportunity early to get seven and had three. They made the decision to go for a fake field goal which could have put them up. I thought the second half we got a spark offensively. We knew we were going to have our hands full defensively and did. I think our offense came out and sparked us in the second half.

O-LINE OF SUCCESSION Starting in the second quarter of the opening game at San Diego (9/07), the Carolina Panthers offensive line has been a carousel and coach Dave Magazu is ready for the ride to stop. While the lineup that started against the Chargers has been together for only 1.5 quarters this season, the Panthers have found a way to hold the unit together. Against the Chiefs (10/5), tackle Jordan Gross saw his 84-consecutive game streak come to an end after suffering a concussion on the fourth play of the previous game versus Atlanta (9/28). Right tackle Jeff Otah injured his ankle in the second half against the Falcons and has missed the last four contests versus Kansas City (10/5), at Tampa Bay (10/12), versus New Orleans (10/19) and versus Arizona (10/26). Center Ryan Kalil started versus Kansas City before giving way to Geoff Hangartner after hurting his ankle in the second half and was inactive at Tampa Bay, versus New Orleans and versus Arizona. The five lineman who started the season opener at San Diego have missed a total of eight starts due to injury. The starting offensive line of left tackle Jordan Gross, left guard Travelle Wharton, center Geoff Hangartner, right guard Keydrick Vincent and right tackle Jeremy Bridges versus Arizona (10/26) became the first combination to start three consecutive games for the Panthers this season. The line has been perhaps more impressive in pass protection, allowing 11 sacks through eight games. Facing a defense ranked fourth in the League in sacks per pass play versus Arizona (10/26), Carolina s offensive line allowed one sack or fewer for the fifth consecutive game and the sixth time this season. The line has allowed just two sacks in the last five contests.

WILLIAMS CONTINUES PRODUCTIVE START In his first season as the starting running back for the Panthers, third-year performer DeAngelo Williams has displayed all the abilities that made him the team s first round (27th overall) selection in the 2006 NFL Draft. He enjoyed a breakout performance versus Kansas City (10/5), tallying a career-high 123 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries and hauled in a 25-yard touchdown strike from quarterback Jake Delhomme on his only reception of the day. He tied a single-game record with three touchdowns scored, previously achieved nine times, most recently by wide receiver Steve Smith versus Houston (9/16/07). Williams also became the first player to score a touchdown rushing and receiving in the same game since Smith at New Orleans (12/18/05). The 123-yard performance was the fourth 100-yard outing of his career and bettered his previous career high of 121 yards, accomplished on two occasions at Arizona (10/14/07) and at Tampa Bay (12/30/07). Here is a look at Williams top-five rushing performances through the first 37 games of his NFL career: Date Opp. Att. Williams corralled his second receiving touchdown of the season on a four-yard pass from Jake Delhomme in the third quarter and added 66 rushing yards on 18 attempts. With the touchdown reception versus New Orleans, Williams became the first Panthers running back to produce two receiving touchdowns in a season since Brad Hoover in S T E WA RT MAKES IMMEDIATE IMPA C T Through the first eight games of his NFL career, running back Jonathan Stewart has demonstrated the ability be a valuable weapon in C a r o l i n a s offensive arsenal. The team s first round (13th overall) selection in April s NFL draft, Stewart has rushed for 362 yards and five touchdowns on 96 carries and caught the first pass of his NFL career, an eight yard completion from quarterback Jake Delhomme, versus Kansas City (10/05). His 362 rushing yards rank fourth among NFL rookies and second in the NFC. 11 SMITH AMONG LEAGUE S ELITE WIDE RECEIVERS Wide receiver Steve Smith produced his third consecutive 100-yard receiving effort versus Arizona (10/26, accumulating 117 yards and two touchdowns on five receptions in Carolina s victory. The 100-yard receiving outing versus the Cardinals was the 25th of his career during the regular season, two behind Muhsin Muhammad s club record 27. Smith has paced the Carolina receiving corp over the last six weeks, catching 33 passes for 613 yards and four touchdowns. His 613 yards since Week Three are third-most in the League over that span behind Houston s Andre Johnson with 660 and Atlanta s Roddy White with 620. Smith led the team in receiving for the third-consecutive season in 2007 with 1,002 yards and became the first player in club history to post three consecutive 1,000-yard receiving seasons after accumulating 1,563 yards in 2005 and 1,166 yards in Since the start of the 2005 season, Smith ranks fourth in the NFL with 4,344 receiving yards, sixth with 306 receptions and tied for fifth with 31 receiving touchdowns. His 6,540 career receiving yards ranks second in club annals to fellow wide receiver and teammate Muhsin Muhammad s 8,258. His 464 career recpetions are also second in franchise history to Muhammad s 615. Smith and Muhammad are the only players in Panthers history to eclipse 400 career receptions and 6,000 receiving yards. With 49 career touchdowns scored, Smith is three ahead of Muhammad s 46 for most touchdowns scored in club history. Of his 49 touchdowns, 41 have come through the air, two on the ground and six in the return game. Smith s 41 career touchdown receptions currently rank third in team history, three behind former tight end Wesley Walls 44 and five behind Muhammad s 46.

MOOSE SIGHTING Carolina welcomed back a familiar face when former wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad was signed as a free agent on February 28 after three seasons with the Chicago Bears. Muhammad is Carolina s franchise leader with 615 catches, 8,258 receiving yards, yard receiving games and 46 touchdown receptions. He is three touchdowns behind fellow wide receiver and teammate Steve Smith s franchise record 49 touchdowns scored and ranks second with 300 career points. Muhammad surpassed 10,000 career receiving yards with 59 yards on five receptions in Week Two versus Chicago (9/14). He currently ranks seventh among active wide receivers with 10,441 receiving yards, sixth with 779 receptions and eighth with 58 touchdown receptions. Lloyd Leads The Way -- Panthers kickoff specialist Rhys Lloyd has reachd the end zone on 31-of-41 kickoffs and leads the NFL with 16 touchbacks. Lloyd s ability to produce touchbacks and reach the end zone has helped Carolina rank third in the NFL with an opponent s average starting position of the 23.7-yard line. Centurions -- Running back DeAngelo Williams and wide receiver Steve Smith became the first pair of Panthers to exceed 100 yards rushing and 100 yards receiving with 108 and 117 yards, respectively, in the same game since the duo achieved the feat at Arizona (10/14/07) when Williams gained 121 yards rushing and Smith tallied 136 receiving. Fox And The AFC -- Entering Sunday s contest at Oakland, head coach John Fox will look to go over.500 as a head coach versus the AFC. Since his arrival prior to the 2002 season, Fox has produced a record of versus the AFC, including a mark of 3-3 versus teams from the AFC West. Carolina is 2-1 under Fox on the road versus the AFC West and 2-0 against the division in 2008, defeating the Chargers, 26-24, at San Diego (9/7) and the Chiefs, 34-0, at Bank of America Stadium (10/5). The Panthers will round out their slate of games versus the AFC West in 2008 when they welcome Denver to Bank of America Stadium on December 14. Points Party -- The 21-third quarter points scored by the Panthers versus Arizona (10/26) tied the team record for most points ever tallied in the third quarter, previously accomplished versus Cincinnati (12/8/02). It also equaled the second-most points ever generated in one quarter, previously accomplished five times, most recently in the fourth quarter at Atlanta (12/18/04). Carolina s 135 points scored in the season s first five home games is the third-highest total through the first five home games of a season in team history, trailing only the 147 scored in 2005 and the 145 in 1996.

REVAMPED DEFENSIVE LINE UP TO THE TEST The Carolina Panthers defensive line entered the 2008 season with only one starter, left defensive tackle Maake Kemoeatu, penciled in at the same position as the 2007 opener at St. Louis (9/09/07). Pro Bowl defensive end Julius Peppers, the club s all-time leader with 60.0 sacks, moved to right defensive end after six seasons on the left side to fill the void left by the retirement of long-time starter Mike R u c k e r. Tyler Brayton, an unrestricted free agent acquisition from Oakland, is the starter at left defensive end and Damione Lewis, who served primarily as a reserve in 2007, moves into the starting lineup after Kris Jenkins was traded to the New York Jets during the o f f s e a s o n. Here is a look at Carolina s starting versus Arizona (10/26) compared to the starting defensive line in the 2007 opener at St. Louis ( 9 / 0 9 / 0 7 ). The Panthers held all five backs under 100 yards rushing, limiting Tomlinson to 97 yards on 22 attempts, Forte to 92 yards on 23 attempts, Peterson to 77 yards on 17 attempts, Turner to 56 yards on 18 carries and Johnson to two yards on seven attempts. The defensive line also played a pivotal role in helping Carolina record their first shutout, a 34-0 victory versus Kansas City (10/5), since a 15-0 win versus St. Louis (11/19/06). The line generated 3.0 sacks, one each for Peppers, Brayton and fellow defensive end Charles Johnson, and helped limit Kansas City to 127 total yards. PEPPERS ADDS PUNCH TO DEFENSIVE LINE With the retirement of defensive end Mike Rucker at the end of the 2007 season, Julius Peppers moved from left defensive end, where he had started 90 games over the course of his first six NFL seasons, to right defensive end. The transition appears to have been a smooth one for Peppers, who leads the team with 4.0 sacks and 14 quarterback hurries, and the defensive line with 27 tackles. He has also notched two forced fumbles, pushing his franchise record in that category to 21. With his sack and forced fumble of Chiefs quarterback Damon Huard in the third quarter versus Kansas City (10/05), Peppers recorded a sack for the thirdconsecutive game, marking the fifth time in his career he has put together a streak of three or more consecutive games with at least one sack. Peppers ranks as Carolina s all-time leader with 60.0 sacks. Here is a look at where his 60.0 sacks since 2002 compare to the rest of the NFL: Player Team Sacks Jason Taylor Miami/Washington 78.5 Dwight Freeney Indianapolis 63.0 Aaron Schobel Buffalo 61.5 Patrick Kerney Atlanta/Seattle 60.5 Julius Peppers Carolina 60.0 John Abraham NYJ/Atl 60.0 Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila Green Bay 59.5 Leonard Little St. Louis 59.5 Simeon Rice TB/Den/Sea 59.5 In Carolina s 30-7 victory versus New Orleans (10/19) in Week Seven, Peppers notched four tackles, two quarterback hurries, one sack, one forced fumble and one pass defensed. The performance marked the fifth time in his career that Peppers has collected at least one sack, a forced fumble and a pass defensed in the same game, and the first time he accomplished the feat since tallying one of each versus Cleveland (10/8/06). The other three games in which Peppers completed the hatrick were versus Arizona (11/21/04), versus New Orleans (1/2/05) and versus Detroit (9/15/02).

BEASON EARNS NFC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE MONTH HONORS Middle linebacker Jon Beason earned NFC Defensive Player of the Month honors for October, the NFL announced prior to Week Nine. The team s first round (25th overall) selection in the 2007 NFL Draft, Beason helped the Panthers to a 3-1 record in October while leading the club with 37 tackles, including a season-high 15 at Tampa Bay (10/12), and two interceptions. He became the first Panthers defensive player to be honored since defensive end Julius Peppers in Ocotober Beason joins Sam Mills (November 1995 and November 1996) as the only linebackers in franchise history to win the award. As a rookie in 2007, the University of Miami (FL) product led or tied for the team lead in tackles in 13-of-16 games en route to notching a team-record 160 stops. He eclipsed the previous record of 158 established by Micheal Barrow in 1998 as well as Lester Towns club rookie record of 106 set in Beason started the first four games of the season at weakside linebacker before moving to middle linebacker for the final 12 after an injury to Dan Morgan. In addition to leading the team in tackles, Beason is tied for the team lead with two inteceptions to go along with one fumble recovery, one quarterback hurry and one pass defensed. His two interceptions are the most by a Panthers linebacker since Will Witherspoon collected two during the 2005 season. HARRIS FORCES THE ISSUE One year ago strong safety Chris Harris stepped into the vacancy left by the retirement of long-time starter Mike Minter. He responded with one of the finest seasons by a Panthers defensive back in franchise history, leading the NFL with a club-record eight forced fumbles and finishing second on the team with a career-high 102 tackles. Harris finished the season playing a role in eight of C a r o l i n a s 30 take-aways, the most of any player on the defense, and enters his second season in Carolina as one of the leaders of an experienced secondary. Harris has started the 2008 season much the way he did the 2007 campaign, forcing a fumble by Chargers tight end Antonio Gates at San Diego (9/7), that was returned 31 yards by cornerback Chris Gamble for a touchdown. He finished the game tied with linebacker Na il Diggs for the team lead with 10 tackles. He was at it again versus Chicago (9/14), forcing a fumble by Bears tight end Greg Olsen that was again recovered by Gamble. Harris added a fumble recovery versus New Orleans (10/19) on a fumble by Saints tight end Jeremy Shockey that was forced by defensive end Julius Peppers. The take-away led directly to Carolina s first touchdown of the game, an 18-yard run by running back Jonathan Stewart four plays later. H e r e s a look at players with the most forced fumbles (unofficial) since the start of the 2007 season: P l a y e r Te a m Forced Fumbles Chris Harris C a r o l i n a 10 James Harrison P i t t s b u r g h 9 Five Players Tied at seven Harris has also been instrumental in the development of rookie free safety Charles Godfrey, the team s first third-round (67th overall) selection in the 2008 NFL Draft. Godfrey has started every game at free safety in 2008 and has collected 39 tackles, one sack and four passes defensed. The play of both safeties is one reason Carolina s pass defense is ranked 10th in the NFL and sixth in the NFC, allowing passing yards per game.
