BYU and Mississippi State are meeting for the fourth time in the history of the two programs. BYU holds a 2-1 edge after last season's double overtime victory at LaVell Edwards Stadium. In the only other matchup in Starkville, BYU defeated the Bulldogs in 2001 on a game-winning field goal from Matt Payne. Current Cougar running backs coach Reno Mahe had 10 receptions, 189 yards and two touchdowns in the game. ONE MISSISSIPPI, TWO MISSISSIPPI. Mississippi State and Ole Miss are the only two SEC teams BYU has defeated on the road. The Cougars currently have a.500 record against the current teams in the SEC at 6-6. Earlier this season, BYU fell to LSU in a neutral site game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. TEAMS COMING OFF A BYE. Mississippi State is coming off of a bye week just like Boise State was last week when the Cougars faced them. BYU also hosts San Jose State later this season after the Spartans are coming off of their bye. The Cougars were in a similar situation in 2016 and went 2-1 against teams coming off of bye weeks (West Virginia, Toledo, UMass). INTO THE GREAT WIDE OPEN. BYU's trip to Starkville is the first of back-to-back long road trips for the Cougars. As the crow flies, the trip to Mississippi State will be 2,706 miles total (round trip), while BYU's trip to Greenville, North Carolina next week racks up 3,798 round-trip miles. Combined, that's 6,504 miles. By comparison, Mississippi State's longest road trip this season is a round trip of 978 miles and Alabama's entire schedule away from Tuscaloosa adds up to 2,329 miles (round trip). With six road games and one neutral site game, BYU will accumulate about 17,246 miles of travel during the regular season. ROUGH PATCH. This is the first time BYU has lost five consecutive games since the 1970 season. A win over the Bulldogs would avoid BYU dropping to 1-6, a start the team hasn't experienced since 1968 when the team won the first game and then lost seven in a row, falling to 1-7. HONORING LAVELL. Legendary hall of famer and beloved head coach at BYU for 29 seasons, LaVell Edwards, passed away on Dec. 29, The always steady and humble coach will be honored in several ways throughout the season, including the team wearing a uniform patch featuring his classic stoic profile he displayed for decades on the Cougar sidelines. 3 2017 BYU FOOTBALL OPPONENT OUTLOOK-3 NO. 24 BULLDOGS DROP DECISION AT NO. 13 AUBURN AUBURN, Ala. - In a Top-25 matchup on the Plains Saturday night, No. 24 Mississippi State (3-2, 1-2 SEC) fell to No. 13 Auburn (4-1, 2-0) by a final score of A 59-yard rush by Tiger tailback Kerryon Johnson on AU's first possession set the tone for a night in which the Auburn offense did most of its damage on big plays and took an early lead that the Bulldogs were never able to claw back from. Auburn initially jumped out to a 21-3 lead, MSU's lone early points coming from a Jace Christmann field goal after sophomore defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons forced a fumble by AU quarterback Jarrett Stidham that was recovered by junior linebacker Montez Sweat. The Bulldogs got into the end zone later in the first half when sophomore quarterback Nick Fitzgerald rolled out and threw across his body to an open Justin Johnson for a six-yard score. Fitzgerald finished the game 13-of-33 passing for 157 yards, two interceptions and one touchdown, and he was also the team's leading rusher, rushing 13 times for 56 yards. With 60 yards on two catches, sophomore Jamal Couch was MSU's leading receiver. The Bulldogs will be off next Saturday before returning home Oct. 14 to begin a two-game homestand. On that date, State will entertain BYU with kickoff time expected to be announced this Monday, Oct. 2. MSU will follow that contest by hosting SEC foe Kentucky for Homecoming on Oct. 21. HEAD COACH DAN MULLEN QUOTES On the lack of competitiveness "If I would've known that we had close to the same rushing yards as them at the beginning of the fourth quarter, I would've said it was a three-point game and we're going to try to win it at the end. The big plays really hurt today on the defensive side of the ball. There were some missed opportunities on the offensive side. Last week I don't think we played well. I'm anxious to see the film this week to see if we played better than last week, but just missed some plays. If that's the case then we'll take a look and try to get that fixed. If we played worse than that'll just be disappointing that we didn't get better." On the younger guys "With two starters out, it gives the younger guys some opportunities to make some plays. We do have to play better and make plays. The opportunities are there, we just have to make plays." MISSISSIPPI STATE 2017 SCHEDULE Date Day Opponent Time/Result 9/2 Sat. Charleston So.
