Berry was a former offensive coordinator at ULM during the season and was part of ULM s 2005 Sun Belt Conference title. Berry was the head coach at Illinois State and in 1999 led the Redbirds to the I-AA National Semifinals. He moved onto the Army as the head coach from and his 2001 team is the last Army football team to beat Navy. The Matchup North Texas and ULM bring opposite type of attacks into the game. The Mean Green is the leading rushing team in the league at nearly 200 yards a game while ULM is more of a passing offense at passing yards a game. ULM is fourth in the Sun Belt Conference against the run while the Mean Green is sixth in the league against the pass. QB Kolton Browning is the leader for ULM on offense. He is the team s leading rusher as well as passer. He is averaging yards of total offense on the year. Luther Ambrose is the leading receiver for the Warhawks as he is averaging in 58.3 yards a game through the air. North Texas enters the game with a chance to win its fourth road game of the season and notch the best road mark since In 1978 North Texas was 3-1 on the road and in 1977 the Mean Green went 5-2. Players of the Week - North Texas running back Lance Dunbar and kicker Zach Olen were named Sun Belt Conference Offensive and Special Teams Players of the Week for their respective effort in the win at Middle Tennessee Saturday. Dunbar rushed for a seasonhigh 226 yards and one touchdown while adding another 46 receiving yards. It was the best rushing performance in the nation last week. Deans was perfect on three field goal attempts and two PAT attempts, scoring 11 of the teams 23 points. Deans kicked a career-long 53-yard field goal as time expired in the first half. This is the second POW award for Dunbar this season and the third for Olen. Mike Canales Named Interim Coach - Offensive coordinator Mike Canales was named interim head coach when Todd Dodge was relieved of his duties following the loss to Florida International on Oct. 16. Canales, who is in his first year as offensive coordinator, will lead the Mean Green for the final five games of the season. He is in his first year at North Texas after a successful stint as offensive coordinator at South Florida. Dodge was 6-37 since taking over at North Texas in First Win of Career - Mike Canales became just the seventh coach in North Texas history to begin his career with a win. Of the 16 previous coaches at North Texas only six began their career with a win and two of those began with a win on the road. Matt Simon was the last head coach to win his first game, defeating Abilene Christian 48-0 in The last North Texas head coach to win his first-ever game with it being on the road was Theron J. Fouts who won at Burleson College in Compare and Contrast - North Texas and Louisiana-Monroe have had offensive success in different ways this season. North Texas leads the Sun Belt Conference in rushing offense with an average of yards per game while ULM has done it through the air, averaging yards passing against Sun Belt opponents. North Texas ranks last in passing offense against Sun Belt opponents with an average of yards per game The Warhawk defense ranks last in the league in rushing defense, allowing conference opponents yards per game on the ground In league games, ULM ranks last in rushing offense, averaging yards per game The Warhawks have allowed a league-high 21 quarterback sacks in six conference games ULM is last in the conference in red zone offense, succeeding just 72 percent of the time with just 13 touchdowns in 25 appearances ULM is -7 in turnover margin, losing 10 fumbles and 12 interceptions this season These two teams rank last in the Sun Belt in punt returns with North Texas averaging 3.4 yards per return and ULM averaging 2.8. Injury Bug Biting Hard - North Texas has been hit unusually hard by the injury bug this season and it has created quite a shakeup in the depth chart. North Texas has lost 12 starters and two backups with injuries all but one of which were season-ending injuries. No other FBS team in the nation has been hit nearly as hard, with Utah State coming in a distant second having now lost seven starters for the year with injuries. Of the 13 long-term injuries suffered by North Texas this season, 10 are by juniors and seniors. The 13 players who have suffered the long-term injuries have combined to earn 23 varsity letters at North Texas and the 13 players who fill their spots on the current two-deep combine for six varsity letters. Two Done in 26 Snaps - Both of North Texas top two quarterbacks suffered season-ending injuries in a period of just 26 offensive plays. First stringer Nathan Tune went down with a dislocated hip late in the Rice game and his replacement Derek Thompson came in to replace him for one play. Thompson then assumed the starting job against Army, but on his 24th snap of the game, he suffered a broken leg. To the best of our research ability, North Texas has never lost its top two quarterbacks in such a short amount of time. 3

There are three positions where the top two or three guys heading into the first game are now gone with injuries. At quarterback, North Texas lost Nathan Tune, Derek Thompson. At center the Mean Green is playing without J.J. Johnson and Nick Leppo. The top two outside receivers at the beginning of the season are also gone in Chris Bynes and Benny Jones. Record Setting Offense - The North Texas offense is 281 yards away from hitting the 4,000- yard plateau for the season, which would be the fourth straight year that the Mean Green went over that mark in total offense. In the 96 years of football that North Texas has played, only 11 teams have had over 4,000 yards of offense in a season and three of those were the last three years. The Mean Green posted its best year ever last season, setting a school record with 4,904 yards. That topped the previous school record of 4,901 yards set in North Texas also had the most yards of total offense per game at last year since the 1969 season. Road Success - North Texas will be trying to win its third straight road game this week at Louisiana-Monroe which would be the first time that has happened since The back-toback road wins at Western Kentucky and at Middle Tennessee is also the first time the Mean Green has accomplished that feat since the same year, when it went undefeated in Sun Belt play and won all three conference road games. If the Mean Green can win at ULM, it would close its road schedule with a 4-2 road record, for a winning percentage of.667. The last time North Texas finished a season with a better winning percentage on the road than that was 1978 when it 3-1 in away games. Two in Top 20 - North Texas senior linebacker Craig Robertson ranks 17th in the nation in tackles with an average of 10.3 per game while Mean Green junior running back Lance Dunbar ranks 10th in rushing with an average of yards per game. North Texas has never had a defender rank in the top 20 nationally since the NCAA adopted its current defensive reporting policy in If Dunbar can maintain his position, it will mark the fourth time in the last eight years that a Mean Green running back finished in the top 15. Backing it Up - Junior running back Lance Dunbar became just the second North Texas player ever to rush for back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons when he went over the elusive mark in the win at Middle Tennessee. Dunbar joins 2010 North Texas Hall of Fame inductee Kevin Galbreath as the only two players in school history who had consecutive 1,000-yard rushing years. He is also one of just three North Texas players to have more than one, 1,000-yard rushing performance, which includes Galbreath and the school s all-time leading rusher Patrick Cobbs. Rushing to Success - North Texas ability to run the ball has determined its success this season. In its three wins the Mean Green has averaged yards per game on the ground, while averaging just in its seven losses. North Texas has averaged 51 rushing attempts and 5.6 yards per attempt in its three wins. In the seven losses, the Mean Green has averaged 39 rushing attempts and 4.1 yards per rush. In the last 16 games, North Texas is 4-0 when having 250 yard or more on the ground and 0-12 when having less than 250 yards rushing. Scoring Upswing - In the three games that Mike Canales has been the interim head coach, the North Texas offense has picked up the scoring pace. The Mean Green has scored 11 touchdowns in three games under Canales (3.7 per game) after scoring 14 touchdowns in the seven games before he took over (2.0 per game). North Texas is averaging 30.3 points in the last three games after averaging just 16.9 points before that point. Turnover Turnaround - Since Mike Canales took over as interim head coach three weeks ago, North Texas has done a remarkable job in the turnover battle. North Texas has won the turnover battle in each of the tree games under Canales, gaining seven and losing two during that stretch for a difference of +5. In the seven games prior to Canales taking over, the Mean Green had lost 12 and gained six for a difference of -6. North Texas threw its first interception in five games when Riley Dodge was picked off against Middle Tennessee. Dunbar Moving Up Career Lists - North Texas junior running back Lance Dunbar went over 1,000 yards rushing for the season with his 226-yard performance last week against Middle Tennessee and inched closer to the top three on the North Texas career-rushing leaders list. Dunbar stands alone in fourth place on the exclusive list with 2,705, which is 415 yards shy of JaQuay Wilburn who holds third place with 3,120 yards. His 27 career rushing touchdowns tie him with Jamario Thomas for third place on that list, two shy of Hall of Famer Scott Davis who stands second with 29 career rushing touchdowns. 4

Of the 30 touchdowns scored by North Texas opponents, 13 (43 percent) have come in four plays or less. Compare that to last season when only 15 of the 54 touchdowns scored by North Texas opponents (28 percent) came on drives of four plays or less. The average touchdown drive by North Texas opponents this season is coming in 5.7 plays and taking only 2:06 of game clock. TD Drives In TD Drives TD Drives 4 plays or less < 1 minute North Texas Opponents Stopping Big Plays - Stopping the big plays has been an issue for the Mean Green defense which has led to the quick scoring drives. The North Texas defense has allowed 14 plays from scrimmage of more than 40 yards this season and it only allowed eight plays from the same distance in 12 games last season. Even worse is nine of the 14 plays this season (64 percent) have been for touchdowns, while only three of the eight last year (38 percent) went for scores. Accuracy on Third Down - The four North Texas quarterbacks this season have combined to complete 112 of their 196 passing attempts for a completion percentage of 56 percent which ranks seventh in the Sun Belt Conference. The least productive passing situation for the Mean Green is probably the most critical third down. North Texas has completed53 percent of its third-down passing attempts (44-of-83) while it has completed 58 percent of its passes on the other three downs. Riley Dodge is the most accurate passer on third down, completing 59 percent of his attempts (22-of-37). First Down Explosives - Most of the explosive plays for North Texas and its opponent this season have come on first down. Mean Green opponents have 48 offensive plays that have gone for 20 yards or more and 24 of those have come on first down (50 percent). The North Texas offense has had 18 of its 46 plays (39 percent) for 20 yards or more come on first down, while 13 have come on second down, 13 have come on third down and two on fourth down. Every North Texas opponent except Western Kentucky has at least one 20-yard play on first down. Three and Out at Home - The North Texas offense has had many quick exits in games at Fouts Field this season, including 11 three-and-out possessions in its last three home games. In five home games, the Mean Green has had 22 three-and-out series (4.4 per game), while in five road games, North Texas has had just 10, three-and-out possessions (2.0 per game). The Mean Green didn t have any three-and-outs in its win at Florida Atlantic and had only one in its win at Western Kentucky. Keys To Success - ESPN college football authority Tom Luginbill says there are four keys to winning a game hidden in every box score. First is third down conversion percentage, second is average yards per pass attempt, third is turnover margin and fourth is rushing attempts. Luginbill says teams that win at least three of those four categories win the game 90 percent of the time. His hypothesis is 100 percent correct for the Mean Green this season. In games against Rice, Army and FIU North Texas lost three of those four categories and lost each game (0-3). In the three wins for the Mean Green, North Texas won at least three of those categories and won (3-0). In the other four games for North Texas this year, neither team won three of the statistical categories. Over 40 - Since the beginning of the 2007 season North Texas has had 11 games in which it has had 40 or more rushing attempts in a game and 35 games in which it had less than 40 rushing attempts. In the 11 games with 40 or more attempts, North Texas is 5-6 for a winning percentage of.454. In the 35 games that North Texas has less than 40 rushing attempts, North Texas is 3-32 for a winning percentage of.086. Most would expect the average yards per rush to go down in those games where the Mean Green has 40 or more carries. In games with 40 or more rushing attempts, the Mean Green averages 5.2 yards per attempt and in games where it has less than 40 carries it is actually the exact same yards per attempt. The only time that North Texas has rushed for more than 40 times and hasn t averaged over four yards per carry was against Clemson earlier this year when it had 49 attempts for 193 yards (3.9 avg.). 5

Of the15 red zone chances at home, the Mean Green has scored 10 touchdowns (56 percent). In the 11 red zone opportunities on the road, North Texas has four touchdowns (36 percent). More Home vs. Away - North Texas is 3-2 in road games this year and 0-5 at home - and the stats tell the story. North Texas is averaging yards rushing in road games and only yards rushing in home games The Mean Green has converted 49 percent of its third downs on the road and only 31 percent at home North Texas is averaging 65.4 yards in penalties at home and only 51.8 on the road The Mean Green defense is allowing yards in five road games and in five home games. The only misguided statistic is quarterback sacks, where North Texas has 12 at home and five on the road. Down and Distance to Gain - The third down conversion success rate is directly proportional to the distance to gain, but for North Texas this season, there is a clear distinction where the separation is. The break-off point seems to be five yards. When the Mean Green has third down and less than five yards to gain it is successful 59 percent of the time (36-of-61). When it has five yards or more to gain on third down, it has a 28 percent success rate (27-of-96). Third Downs Lately - In its last five games, North Texas has struggled on third down conversions. In the first five games the Mean Green was successful converting third downs 48 percent of the time (40-of-84) and in the last five games it has only converted 32 percent of its tries (23-of-73). In the first five games, North Texas had 25, third-and-short situations (three yards or less to gain). In the last five games the Mean Green has had just 16 third-and-short situations. Some of that can be contributed to the injury situation as North Texas has been forced to play its fourth-string quarterback Chase Baine in two of the last four games while it had its top three signal callers playing in the first five. The combination of Nathan Tune, Derek Thompson and Riley Dodge completed 37-of-65 passes on third down (57 percent) while Baine has connected on 7-of-18 passes on third down (38 percent). Slow out of Gate - The North Texas defense will be trying get some early stops this week after not having much early success so far this season. Eight of the Mean Green s 10 opponents this season have scored a touchdown on their first offensive possession of the game. North Texas has been down 7-0 in every game except the Western Kentucky and Middle Tennessee games this year and has been outscored in the first quarter. The North Texas offense has not kept pace either, being forced to punt or turning the ball over on the first possession in seven of its 10 games. In the last four years, North Texas is 4-25 when the opponent has scored first and 4-13 when North Texas has drawn first blood. The Mean Green has held only four leads in the 10 games it has played, one for 7:22 in the fourth quarter against Rice, the lead it held for 30:54 in the win over Florida Atlantic, the 38:14 it led in the win at Western Kentucky and the entire game against Middle Tennessee. In the 600 minutes of game action this season, North Texas has held the lead for a total of 136:30 while the Mean Green opponents have held the lead or the score has been tied for 463:30. Another Close Loss - North Texas six-point loss to Troy two weeks ago was the latest in several close losses by the Mean Green over the past two seasons. Since the beginning of the 2009 season North Texas is 2-10 in games decided by a touchdown or less. Those 10 losses have come by a total of 37 points, or 3.7 points per loss. Unfortunately for Mean Green fans, seven of those 10 losses during that stretch have come at Fouts Field, including four of five home games this season. There have been three 1-point losses at home since the beginning of the 2009 season, Ohio in 2009 and Rice and Louisiana-Lafayette this year. Outgaining Opponents - It has become a freakish trend. North Texas has outgained 12 of its last 24 opponents in total offense but has won just six of those games. The Mean Green has outgained six of its 10 opponents this season but has just a 3-3 in those games. In five of its 10 losses last year, North Texas had a total offense advantage. Line Adjustment - After allowing just 12 sacks in 12 games last season and ranking first in the Sun Belt and 11th in the nation in sacks allowed, the Mean Green offensive line has struggled mightily this season. North Texas has allowed more than double last year s total with 26 in 10 games and ranks seventh in the Sun Belt and 94th nationally. Four of the five starters from last year returned in 2010, but the Mean Green has lost its top two centers and a starting guard with season-ending injuries and tackles Matt Tomlinson and Victor Gill have been playing with nagging injuries all year. Time Management - The North Texas offense is doing a remarkable job of sustaining drives and keeping the defense off the field this season. The Mean Green leads the Sun Belt Conference and ranks seventh in the nation in time of possession with an average of 32:53 per game. North Texas has never averaged more than 31:40 in time of possession for an entire season since joining the Sun Belt Conference in North Texas has 21 drives this year that have lasted 10 plays or more (2.1 per game), compared to last year when North Texas had a total of 22 in 12 games (1.8 per game). North Texas amassed an amazing 41:52 of possession time against Clemson, giving the Mean Green an advantage of 23:44. That is the largest time of possession advantage for a Mean Green offense since returning to Div. I-A in 1995 and believed to be the most time of possession for a North Texas team in a game in school history. Losing Late Leads - North Texas lost a fourth-quarter lead against Rice earlier this season when the Owls scored a touchdown with 6:22 to play to take a lead. That was the sixth time in the last 19 games that the Mean Green had a fourth-quarter lead and lost the game. North Texas lost games to Ohio, Louisiana-Lafayette, Florida Atlantic, Florida International and Army last season after leading at some point in the final quarter. Well Represented in the NFL - North Texas has had more players drafted to play professional football than any other team in the Sun Belt Conference. Since the first NFL draft in 1936, North Texas has had 77 players drafted, including seven players picked in the first round. Joe Greene is the highest drafted player ever from North Texas when he was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers with the fourth overall pick in Did You Know - North Texas has its share of players on the roster that have great genes of their own but some have even better bloodlines. Linebacker Zach Orr is the son of former NFL tight end Terry Orr, who was a member of the Washington Redskins Super Bowl teams in 1987 and Wide receiver Alex Lott is the son of former Oklahoma All-Big 8 quarterback Thomas Lott. His older brother just finished up his college career at Rice. Sophomore linebacker Jeremy Phillips is the younger brother of Jason Phillips, the 2008 Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year for TCU and current Baltimore Raven linebacker. Freshman tight end Austin Fitzpatrick is the son of Tony Fitzpatrick who was a starting defensive lineman on the 1983 Miami Hurricanes national championship team. One Overtime Not Enough - North Texas has played in just two overtime games since the NCAA introduced the format in The Mean Green is 1-1 in its two overtime games, defeating Florida International in seven overtimes in 2006 and losing to Ohio in two overtimes this year. The Mean Green is the only FBS team that has never had a game decided in the first overtime period.

After a breakout year in 2009 when he rushed for 1,378 yards and finished 14th in the nation in rushing, Dunbar also has a chance to be the only player in Mean Green history to rank in the top 15 in rushing in consecutive years. In 18 games as a starter he has eclipsed 100 yards 13 times and averaged yards per game. Against league competition, he leads the Sun Belt in rushing at yards per game. He rushed for a season-high 2226 yards against Middle Tennessee and is one of only five players in FBS to have more than one 200-yard rushing game this season. 20 Carries to Success - Obviously when Lance Dunbar gets more carries in a game he is more likely to break the 100-yard rushing mark. He has rushed for over 100 yards in all but two times that he has carried the ball 20 or more times (10-for-12) and only eclipsed the century mark four times when having less than 20 carries (4-for-15). Even more amazing is his average yards per carry doesn t suffer at all with the additional work. When Dunbar has less than 20 carries in a game he is averaging 5.4 yards per attempt when he has 20 or more carries a game he is averaging 5.9 yards per attempt. No. of Games Avg./Attempt Avg./Game TDs Less than 20 Carries or more Carries Career Numbers Stack Up - In comparing Lance Dunbar s career rushing average to the top backs in the nation, he measures up very well. Dunbar has only been a starter for 18 games but has played in 27 games overall. He is one of only seven active FBS running backs to average over 100 yards per game in his career (100.2). Of the seven active backs who have averaged over 100 yards in their career all but one average more carries than Dunbar. His average per carry over his career is 5.73 yards per attempt, which also ranks ninth among all FBS back. Fourth Starting Quarterback - North Texas has started four different quarterbacks this season, all due to injuries suffered by the top three signal callers. Walk-on Chase Baine was the fourth quarterback to start after Nathan Tune, Derek Thompson and Riley Dodge all went down with injuries. Dodge has come back from a broken hand and started the last two games. North Texas is the only FBS team in the nation to start four different quarterbacks this season, with Louisiana Tech slightly behind with three different starters this year. Quarterback Confusion - After starting quarterback Nathan Tune and his backup Derek Thompson suffered season-ending injuries in back-to-back games, North Texas was forced to go its third-string signal caller, who was its first-string quarterback last season. Confusing? Riley Dodge started 10 games at quarterback in 2009 but switched to wide receiver this year after suffering multiple shoulder and elbow injuries at QB. He was forced back into the familiar position that he was originally recruited to play and has started four games there this year. Dodge set a North Texas record as a redshirt freshman in 2009 by completing 67.7percent of his passes, but was saddled by 15 interceptions. Dodge Doing Work - Quarterback Riley Dodge has exceeded the expectations that nearly any coach would have of a third string quarterback. Dodge is 3-2 as a starter this season and has been the starter for all five of the team s wins in the last two seasons. With the help of Mike Canales, Dodge has become a more efficient passer this season, improving his efficiency rating from last year to this year. There is a clear correlation of Dodge s success as it relates to the number of his passing attempts in a game. Here is a comparison of Dodge s complete games that he has more than 30 attempts compared to 30 attempts or less. Games Comp. Att. Int. TD Yards Eff. Rating More than 30 Attempts or Less Attempts

Robertson leads the Sun Belt and ranks 17th nationally with 103 tackles. He is on pace for 126 tackles this season which would be the most tackles in a season by any North Texas player since Robertson also ranks 10th among all active FBS players in career tackles. Following in Footsteps - True freshman linebacker Zach Orr has been a quick study with Craig Robertson s leadership. Orr has come off the bench to play in all 10 games this season and ranks third on the team with 48 total tackles. That tackle total is exactly the same number of stops that Robertson had in his freshman season although it was his redshirt freshman season. The last true freshman to have more than 48 tackles in a season was defensive back Darien Williams who had 62 in Getting Pressure Cranked Up - If you wanted to trace the struggles of the Mean Green over the last five years, you can find one area that stands out. Pressure on the quarterback. During the Sun Belt Conference championship years of North Texas compiled a Sun Belt Conference record of 25-1 and averaged 28.5 sacks and 72.5 tackles for loss each season. In the six seasons since the last championship, North Texas has a Sun Belt record of 9-34 and has averaged 14.6 sacks and 57.6 tackles for loss. Olen is 10-of-12 on field goal attempts and 12-of-13 on PATs in those five games. In his first-ever collegiate action, Olen was a perfect 4-of-4 on field goal attempts (37, 37, 37, 27). Only one kicker in NCAA history has been perfect on more attempts in their first collegiate game. The last true freshman at North Texas to have a perfect debut was Nick Bazaldua when he was 1-for-1 against Nicholls State in Olen s 53-yard field goal against Western Kentucky was the longest by a North Texas kicker since Olen will not be eligible for NCAA or Sun Belt Conference statistic leaders list this season because he will not be able to meet the minimum of playing in 75 percent of the team s games. Chancellor Clicking on Kick Returns - True freshman Brelan Chancellor has found his way onto the field and the breakout star on special teams this season. Chancellor has been returning kicks the past six games and has averaged 24.8 yards per return. If he met the Sun Belt minimums for number of games played (70 percent) he would rank second in the league. Punt Returns Lacking - The last two years, North Texas has struggled finding a consistent punt returner. The Mean Green averaged just 5.9 yards per punt return last season, returning a team total of just 11 punts. After 10 games this year, the Mean Green has returned just 11 punts for a total of 37 yards to rank 113th nationally. North Texas has used four different punt returners this season, most recently settling on Darius Carey. North Texas has not returned a punt for a TD since 2004, which covers a span of 70 games. Return Drought Continues - It has been 143 games and counting since North Texas has returned a kickoff for a touchdown. Broderick McGrew was the last Mean Green player to do so when he took a kickoff and returned it 100 yards in a loss to Utah State on Nov. 14, North Texas current active streak ranks as the sixth-longest in the nation - led by Air Force, which hasn t brought a kick back for a score in 308 games. 9

Injury woes have taken their toll on the Mean Green this year, and hit home again at West Point. After losing center Nick Leppo in the game s second series, quarterback Derek Thompson left the game with a leg injury. Starting receiver Christopher Bynes also left the game with injury, making nine starters lost to injury this year. Thompson was filling in for Nathan Tune, who left last week s game against Rice with a hip injury, and Riley Dodge was once again called into action. Dodge, who had taken snaps in both of NT s games, filled in for Thompson admirably by completing 8-of-17 passes for 63 yards. But a botched a handoff with Lance Dunbar caused NT s second turnover of the game, and was recovered by Army at the Mean Green 14 yard line. The Black Knights made NT pay just four plays later with a touchdown off the left tackle. A 20-yard scramble from quarterback Trent Steelman capped off Army s longest touchdown drive of the season - 11 plays and 79 yards.
