The Golden Eagles close their exhibition portion of their schedule Tuesday night as they take on Charleston (W.V). Southern Miss looks to continue its success in exhibition play. The Golden Eagles are 35-6 all-time and are on a 13-game winning streak. Southern Miss is coming off an victory over St. Catharine s (Ky.) in its opening exhibiton. Dwayne Davis and Rashard McGill both had 14 points and four rebounds. Jonathan Mill had 12 points, six rebounds, three blocks and two steals. Deon Edwin had 11 points and three steals, while Daveon Boardingham and Norville Carey scored 10 points apiece. Carey added six rebounds, Carey had three blocks and Michael Craig pulled down a game-high eight boards. USM is coming off a historic season. The Golden Eagles went 25-9, 11-5 in Conference USA play and made just its third appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Eagle Droppings Southern Miss is starting its 94th season of basketball. Southern Miss head coach Donnie Tyndall begins his first season as the head coach of the Golden Eagles. The Golden Eagles will play an exhibition game for the third straight season. Southern Miss and Saint Catharine s will meet for the first time in history. Dating back to 1988, Southern Miss is 34-6 in exhibition games, and have won its last 11. The Eagles return just four letterwinners from last year s squad and welcome eight newcomers. Neil Watson is the team s leading returning scorer and 12.3 ppg, while Jonathan Mills is the leading returning rebounder at 6.1 rpg.

Watson will run the point for the Eagles after spending most of last year coming off the bench. The Kansas City, Kan. native was named Preseason All-Conference USA, and is the league s reigning Newcomer and Sixth Man of the Year. Watson was the team s leading scorer last year, averaging 12.3 points and 4.4 assists. He was also second in Conference USA with an 84.3 free throw percentage. Senior forward Jonathan Mills returns after being named Third Team All-Conference USA and earning All-Defensive Team honors. Mills averaged 9.5 points and led the Golden Eagles with 6.1 rebounds. Senior Rashard McGill will see action on the wing as well as a forward. Mc- Gill averaged 2.6 points 2.9 rebounds. Junior Cedric Jenkins also returns to the squad. Jenkins started five games, averaging 2.6 points and 2.0 rebounds. Eight newcomers will don the black and gold for the first time this year. Junior college transfers Dwayne Davis (Philadelphia, Pa.,/Midland CC), who sat out last year as a non-qualifier, Daveon Boardingham (Newark, N.J./Seward County CC), Michael Craig (Phoenix, Ariz./ South Mountain CC) and Jerrold Brooks (Rochester, N.Y./Casper College). Transfers Chip Armelin (Sulphur, La./Minnesota), Aaron Brown (Hackensack, N.J./Temple) and Johnny Zuppardo (Metarie, La./Arkansas State) must sit out this season due to NCAA Transfer rules. Head coach Donnie Tyndall enters his first season at the helm of the Southern Miss men s basketball program. He has compiled a (.573) record in six years as a head coach. Scouting Charleston (W.V.) Charleston (W.V.) plays its only exhibition of the season tonight against Southern Miss. The Golden Eagles finished 26-7 last year and 18-3 in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Golden Eagles return just one starter and four letterwinners from last year s team. Senior guard Evan Faulkner is the team s lone returning starter. Faulkner was second on the team last year with 11.5 points. Junior forward Xavier Humphrey, who is the only other returning player to play in all 33 games, averaged 8.3 points last year. Charleston (W.V.) scored 82.8 points per game last year, while allowing The Golden Eagles connected on 45.0-shooting, but were just 34.7-percent from behind the arc. UC also averaged 41.3 rebounds, which was tops in the league, while also averaging 15.7 assists. Head coach Mark Downey enters his third season at the helm of the Charleston (W.V.) men s basketball program. He has compiled a (.672) record during his time at the school and a (.652) record in six seasons overall. Exhibition 2 Last Time Out Southern Miss placed six players in double-figures, as it defeated St. Catharine s (Ky.), 85-51, in its opening exhibition game. Southern Miss has now won 13 straight exhibition games and is 35-6 in exhibition play overall. Dwayne Davis and Rashard McGill both had 14 points and four rebounds. Jonathan Mill had 12 points, six rebounds, three blocks and two steals. Deon Edwin had 11 points and three steals, while Daveon Boardingham and Norville Carey scored 10 points apiece. Carey added six rebounds, Carey had three blocks and Michael Craig pulled down a game-high eight boards. Southern Miss shot 57.4-percent (31- of-54) while holding SSC to just 34.0-percent (16-of-47). The Golden Eagles held a huge advantage on the glass, more than doubling up the Patriots, 42-to-21. The Black and Gold also blocked had 17 assists, 12 steals and eight blocks. Southern Miss Returns to NCAA Tournament For the first time in 21 years and just the third time in school history, Southern Miss earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Golden Eagles earned a nine-seed, the highest in school history, in the the East Regional. Four Letterwinners Return For Golden Eagles Southern Miss returns just four letterwinners from last year s 25-9 NCAA Tournament team. Guard Neil Watson, last year s leading scorer, returns for his junior season. Senior Jonathan Mills returns after leading the team in rebounds. The Golden Eagles also return senior guard Rashard McGill and junior guard Cedric Jenkins. Southern Miss Looks to Make Up For Lost Production Despite returning its leading scorer and rebounder, Southern Miss lost much of its production after last season. The Golden Eagles return just 37.3-percent of last year s scoring and 36.9-percent of its rebounding. Eight Newcomers Join Eagles Eight newcomers will don the black and gold for the first time this year, as head coach Donnie Tyndall has restocked this year s team with new faces, including four junior college transfers, three transfers, one redshirt freshman and one walk-ons. Southern Miss Least Experienced Team in Division I Southern Miss returns just four players from last year s squad. Those four players have combined for just six years of Division I experience, tying them with Lipscomb and Mississippi State for the least experienced team in the country. He became the second player to earn All- Defensive honors. Sai Quon Stone was named to the team in 2010 and 2011 Mills led the team with 6.1 rebounds. He also has 21 steals on the season. 20 Wins With the victory over Memphis on Feb. 1, Southern Miss earned its 20th victory of the season. It is the 16th time in school history that Southern Miss has won 20 games in a season, and just the second time that they have done it three straight years. It was also the fastest Southern Miss has reached 20 wins since Also, with the victory over SMU, Southern Miss surpassed the squad for the most victories in a season since becoming a Division I program. Its 25 victories are the third highest win total in school history. Bringing Down the Big Boys From Dec , Southern Miss played and defeated teams from the SEC (Ole Miss), Pac-12 (Arizona State) and the Big East (USF). It was the first time that Southern Miss defeated at least three teams from the Power conferences since they earned four victories during season. USM has a slightly better record in opening away games, as it is Southern Miss Versus Home Non- Conference Opponents Since 2004, the Golden Eagles have taken care of their non-conference opponents at home. The Black and Gold is 51-6 against non-conference foes on its own floor, including having won its last 23, which is tied for the second longest non-conference home winning streak in school history. Southern Miss just concluded a perfect 7-0 non-conference record at home, the third straight year that the Golden Eagles have finished their non-conference slate undefeated. Wins vs. Losses In its 25 victories last year, Southern Miss dominated the stat sheet, especially in field goal percentage, three-point field goal percentage and rebounding. However, in its nine losses, the Golden Eagles struggled in all three categories. The winning streak began Dec. 4 with a win over New Mexico State and ended with a loss on Jan. 11 at Memphis. Southern Miss set a new school record for free throw percentage, connecting on 573-of- 779 free throws, a 73.6% clip, which also led Conference USA. Southern Miss shot less than 70.0% just 12 times last year, and connected on over 80.0% from the charity stripe nine times. Watson Doing It From the Charity Stripe Sophomore Neil Watson currently leads the team with 12.3 points per game. However, more than a third of his points came from the free throw line. In fact, Watson was second in Conference USA in free throw percentage, connecting on 84.3-percent from the charity stripe. The Kansas City, Kan., native hit 156-of-185 free throws. 6 Southern Miss Head Coach Donnie Tyndall Donnie Tyndall has been named the 19th head coach in the history of the Southern Miss men s basketball program. Tyndall comes to Southern Miss after heading up the Morehead State basketball program for the last six years. Since 2006, Tyndall has amassed a overall record, including in the Ohio Valley Conference. The Grand Rapids, Mich., native has led the Eagles to postseason play three of the past four years, advancing to the NCAA Tournament in 2009 and He also recruited the NCAA s all-time leader in rebounding (Kenneth Faried) and the school s all-time leader in assists (Nick Stojakovic) and threepointers (Maze Stallworth). He coached three 1,000-point scorers, four All-Ohio Valley Conference players and two OVC Players of the Year. Tyndall took over Morehead State in 2006, inheriting a squad that finished 4-23 the previous year. Tyndall immediately made his mark on the school, improving the team s win total in each of his first five years. His squads won at least 20 games from after Morehead State reached the 20-win plateau just twice in its history prior to his arrival. He also led Morehead State to the biggest increase in RPI in the country, taking over a team that was ranked 321st in RPI to the 77th ranked team just five years later. Tyndall s first squad tripled their win total from the previous year, finishing the year The following season, the Eagles were picked 10th in the Ohio Valley Conference preseason poll. However, MSU finished overall and third in the conference, earning 2008 OVC Coach of the Year honors. That year, Athlon s Sports Magazine deemed him one of the Top 10 Under the Radar Coaches. Tyndall had his best season yet in The Eagles set a Morehead State record for wins, finishing They also won their second OVC Championship under Tyndall and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second time, defeating Louisville in the second round. For his efforts, Tyndall was recognized as the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) District Coach of the Year. That year s squad was led by Kenneth Faried. Under Tyndall s tutelage, Faried became a two-time OVC Player of the Year, an All-American and the NCAA s all-time leading rebounder on his way to becoming the 22nd overall pick in the NBA Draft by the Denver Nuggets. Last year, the Eagles finished record and finished third in the OVC. Tyndall s players were also proficient in the classroom, as 13 of 14 seniors who have exhausted their eligibility have graduated. Prior to Morehead State, served as an assistant coach at Iowa Central Community College ( ), head coach at St. Catharine College ( ) assistant coach at LSU ( ) and associate head coach at Idaho ( ) and Middle Tennessee State ( ). At Middle Tennessee State, Tyndall helped the Blue Raiders average 17 wins per season while helping to lead them to four consecutive winning seasons. As the recruiting coordinator, Tyndall twice earned MTSU Top 25 recruiting classes in 2003 and Both classes were also ranked No. 1 in the Sun Belt Conference.
