He has guided Louisville to a record over that span and is the winningest coach in program history. Last year, Walz directed the Cardinals to their sixth season with at least 20 victories. Six different Cardinals scored in double figures in last year s victory over UT Martin on Dec. 28. Myisha Hines-Allen paced the team with 13 points, while Cortnee Walton, Briahanna Jackson, and Asia Durr each added 12. As a team, UofL shot 54.0 percent from the field. Louisville was picked to finish second in the Atlantic Coast Conference s preseason media and coaches polls. The Cardinals, who finished second in last year s league standings, received eight first-place votes in the media poll. Louisville is ranked No. 5 in the Associated Press preseason poll, the fifth time the Cardinals have opened the year in the poll s top 10. Louisville was tabbed ninth in 2011 and 2012, fifth in 2013, and eighth in UofL is eighth in this year s coaches poll. Louisville begins its 42nd year of women s basketball in program history, when it opens the campaign at UT Martin on Nov. 11. It is the second time in the last three years the Cardinals have started the year on the road, with the previous occurrence coming at IUPUI (11/14) in Under head coach Jeff Walz, UofL is 7-2 in season openers. All-time, Louisville boasts a mark in season openers (10-5 home, 9-11 away, 3-3 neutral). <About UT Martin - Louisville starts its 42nd year in program history on the road when it plays at UT Martin on Friday (Nov. 11, 6:30 p.m. ET, OVC Digital Network) at Skyhawk Arena. UT Martin defeated Christian Brothers in an exhibition on Nov. 7. Kendall Spray had a game-high 21 points to pace the Skyhawks, who connected on 13 3-pointers. 3 Louisville at UT Martin -- Page 3 Louisville Sports Information Office - (502) <Preseason Conference Accolades - Myisha Hines-Allen was voted the ACC s preseason Player of the Year - by both the coaches and league s media and SIDs - and also named to the all-conference team with Mariya Moore and Asia Durr. Louisville was the only school with three selections on both preseason teams. Hines-Allen, who capped her sophomore campaign as the school s second player of the year, is the first student-athlete in program history to earn the league s preseason honor. <Highlighting the Exhibition - Louisville's exhibition victory over Lindsey Wilson proved to be a confidence booster for Asia Durr. Head coach Jeff Walz continually called for the sophomore to shoot the ball more, and she finished with a game-high 19 points, shooting 7-of-10 from the field. Last year, in 31 games, she only had 10 field goal attempts 12 times. Freshmen Ciera Johnson (14 points in 20 minutes), Jazmine Jones (15 points on 7-of-8 shooting, 4 rebounds, 2 steals), and Bionca Dunham (9 points, 10 rebounds, 4 blocks in 19 minutes) also had solid performances. Collectively, the Cardinals shot 54.9 percent from the field (39-of-71), while forcing 26 turnovers that turned into 43 points. <Lofty Expectations - Louisville, returning eight letterwinners from a season ago, including all five starters, has continued to attract plenty of attention from the preseason publications. In addition being selected fifth in the Associated Press preseason poll and eighth in the USA Today/Coaches rankings, the Cardinals also rank in the top eight by five other outlets: third by Lindy s and Sporting News, fifth by SLAM Magazine, sixth by Athlon Sports, and seventh by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association. The 10th-year coach conducted multiple interviews with regional and national media, recorded a national podcast with ESPN, WNBA, and ACC analyst LaChina Robinson, held an interview with ESPN.com national women s college basketball writer Mechelle Voepel, and participated in a one-on-one interview with ESPN analyst Doris Burke. <Johnson Joins Cardinals - Highly talented guard Taylor Johnson transferred to Louisville from Loyola Chicago during the summer of A two-time all-conference honoree, who can play immediately and has one season of eligibility remaining, Johnson finished her career at Loyola Chicago averaging 14.2 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 2.5 steals over 93 games. In her final season there, she started all 30 games and averaged the league s eighthbest scoring mark at 15.1 points to go with 4.9 rebounds. Currently, Louisville is the only school nationally that has its football, men s basketball, and women's basketball programs in the Associated Press top 15 (football: No. 5; women's basketball: No. 5; men's basketball: No. 13). <Hines-Allen Continues to Collect Honors - Myisha Hines-Allen picked up where she left off as a sophomore, receiving honors. The junior, who recently was named an Associated Press honorable mention All-American, has earned additional national attention following the announcement of being named the preseason ACC Player of the Year. Hines-Allen, who averaged a remarkable 18.0 points and 8.1 rebounds in league play, was named an All-American by four other national outlets: Sporting News (first team), Lindy s (second team), Athlon Sports (second team), and College Sports Madness (second team). <espnw Praises Hines-Allen, Moore - espnw selected Myisha Hines-Allen and Mariya Moore as two of the top-25 players in the country for Hines-Allen was tabbed 11th, while Moore was voted 22nd. Over the course of the season, the Cardinals will face nine other players that were picked in the top 25. <Joining the Club - Myisha Hines-Allen and Mariya Moore have seen the ball go through the hoop plenty of times in their first two seasons at Louisville. The duo now is within reach of joining Louisville s 1,000-point club that currently features 25 players. Hines-Allen enters the campaign only 17 points shy (983 from ), while Moore needs 68 (932 from ). The last time a pair of teammates reached 1,000 career points in the same season was during the campaign, when Sara Hammond and Bria Smith achieved the feat. Prior to that season, only two other times in school history did at least two teammates reach the milestone in the same year: , Nell Knox, Tuonisia Turner, and Gwen Doyle; , Jackie Spencer, Devita Ceaser, and Stephanie Edwards. <(Un)Hampered by Height - With the addition of 6-foot-4 freshmen Ciera Johnson and Kylee Shook, Louisville owns one of the taller teams in the ACC. The Cardinals also have significant height with Sam Fuehring and Cortnee Walton, who are each 6-foot- 3, giving Louisville and Boston College four players who are at least 6-foot-3.
