Rodriguez can blame that on a lousy 3-6 Pac-12 record but this non-conference clash doesn t figure to pique the Cats curiosity. As it is, ASU is just 1-4 ATS in its last five bowl games while Rich Rod has only cashed twice in nine tries. The host Lobos are also just 1-4 ATS in their last five trips to the alleys but they are 9-5 ATS versus Pac-12 opposition and we just can t pass up doubledigit home dogs in this spot, not with Zona arriving with the No. 106 scoring defense (35.7) in the land. And remember New Mexico s last bowl appearance was on this field in 2007 and they promptly whitewashed Nevada, From a pure football style, it should be an interesting clash as the Wildcats operate from a spread-option attack while Bob Davie s men like to ground-and-pound. And if the Lobos can do what they do best, our database likes their chances as it notes: bowl dogs who out-rush a.sub 700 opponent are ATS, including ATS as dogs of 6 or more points. That has us grabbing the points especially when a disinterested favorite is handing them out. An absolute must-take. GAME OF THE WEEK UPSET ROYAL PURPLE LAS VEGAS BOWL Sam Boyd Stadium Las Vegas, NV Byu over Utah by 7 Who says the NCAA doesn t know what they re doing? And while we agree there s less chance of trouble hanging out with an Elvis impersonator in a wedding chapel than with Lamar Odom at the Love Ranch, the Cougars figure to be throwing a big going-away party for HC Bronco Mendenhall, who s leaving Provo for Charlottesville, Virginia. Mendenhall has won 99 games in his 11 seasons at BYU (99-42), including nine this year despite losing QB Taysom Hill in Week One and RB Jamaal Williams before the season started. RAYCOM MEDIA CAMELLIA BOWL Cramton Bowl Montgomery, AL Appalachian St over Ohio U by 4 Beggars can t be choosers may have originated in the 1562 workings The Proverbs and Epigrams of John Heywood but it still applies five centuries later as the Appalachian State Mountaineers make their firstever bowl appearance. Unfortunately, it s in the Camellia Bowl where the combatants receive only $100,000 by far the lowest of any bowl payout (the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl is next at $325,000). The good news is they ll be in Montgomery, Alabama and won t need much in the way of spending money (google tourist attractions in Montgomery and the only thing that comes up is a skate park and Lillie s Pool and Game Room!). Nonetheless, the Mountaineers should be thrilled with the invite while this is old hat for a Bobcats bunch who are hitting the alleys for the sixth time in seven years. However, our database warns us against laying the points with the Mounties as bowl virgin (no bowl appearances last three years) favorites of 7 or more points are 4-11 SU and 2-7 ATS off a spread loss of more than 8 points. And though the Bobbies are just 1-3 SUATS as bowl dogs, HC Frank Solich has shined against Sun Belt foes, posting a 7-1 SU record. That has us taking it or leaving it (and shooting pool) tonight in Montgomery. CURE BOWL Orlando Citrus Bowl Orlando, FL Georgia St over San Jose St by 1 It s no surprise to find both the Spartans and Panthers in the inaugural Cure Bowl as each has gotten a bit healthier after posting three wins and one win, respectively, in San Jose (5-7, with one of the wins over New Hampshire) is still one of three losing teams to be rewarded with an invite and that has us questioning the linesmakers. Actually, it s the Panthers 4-0 SUATS mark to close out the campaign including a shocking 27-point (continued on next page)

4 win at Georgia Southern that has us believing the wrong team is favored tonight in Orlando. However, we ll never complain about grabbing points, especially when our well-oiled machine spits out this pair of nuggets: bowl favorites with three or fewer wins last year are ATS while bowl dogs with three or fewer wins the previous season are 19-7 ATS. In addition, the Spartans are 1-6 SU versus fellow bowlers this year and 5-13 SU under HC Ron Caragher from Game Six out. We must point out, though, that the Panthers arrive off three straight revenge wins and these teams are just 4-9 SU and 3-10 ATS in bowl play. Still, we ll take what we can get as GSU SR QB Nick Arbuckle (4,145 yards / 36 TDs) and the surging Cats squeeze out a victory in their inaugural bowl appearance. R+L CARRIERS NEW ORLEANS BOWL Mercedes-Benz Superdome New Orleans, LA Louisiana Tech over Arkansas St by 6 A couple of teams heading in opposite directions hit the Big Easy as the Red Wolves enter on an 8-game win streak while the Bulldogs arrive off an embarrassing 34-point home loss to Southern Miss on the heels of an unimpressive win in UTEP. Then why are we trekking with the Techsters, especially knowing bowl dogs on an 8-game win skein exact are 4-1 SU and 5-0 ATS? Simple the Bulldogs are 10-3 ATS versus fellow bowlers the past two seasons and 4-1 ATS as bowlers since 1990, including a thrashing of Illinois in last year s Heart of Dallas Bowl. They re also 6-1 SU all-time in this particular matchup, though they haven t met since More importantly, HC Skip Holtz has never lost to a Sun Belt foe (4-0 SU, 3-1 ATS) and is a solid 4-2 ATS in bowl games. Thus, we say lay it and play it as QB Jeff Driskel (a Florida transfer) carries the Bulldogs to victory in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl. Just saying Monday, December 21 MIAMI BEACH BOWL Marlins Park Miami, FL South Florida over W Kentucky by 3 Talk about going from the outhouse to the penthouse! In two-plus seasons manning the South Florida sidelines, HC Willie Taggart had won just five of 26 games against FBS opposition. We re not quite sure exactly what changed in Tampa since early October but suddenly the Bulls are one of the hottest teams in the nation (7-1 SUATS run to close out the regular season, outscoring opponents ), and can win nine games for the first time since Heck, even ol Willie was considered for the South Carolina job that inexplicably went to Will Muschamp. And while we ll run with the Bulls today, we will be careful. The 11-2 Hilltoppers are on quite a roll of their own since losing at LSU in late October, posting a 5-0 SU and 4-1 ATS mark. However, they are 0-2 ATS as bowlers since joining the FBS in 2008 while the Bulls are 3-0 SUATS in their last three bowl efforts. In addition, C-USA bowlers are just 2-6 SU versus the AAC while USF is 15-4 SU versus C-USA when they own a winning record. And from our NCAA Coaches League: Taggart is 16-3 ATS as a dog off a SUATS win, and would love nothing more than to top his former team (coached WKU from ) in postseason play. Thus, it s a take as USF improves to 5-0 SU in this matchup since Tuesday, December 22 FAMOUS IDAHO POTATO BOWL Albertsons Stadium Boise, ID Utah St over Akron by 1 It s been awhile since Akron last played football in December. Ten years to be exact, as their last bowl appearance was in the 2005 Motor City Bowl. However, the 7-5 Zips earned this invite, finishing off the 2015 campaign with four straight wins. Of course, it helps that those four foes were a combined but nonetheless, Terry Bowden has his team heading to the postseason. The Aggies, meanwhile, have been on a strict carb diet, as they hit potato country for the third time in five years (1-1 SUATS). Their bowl record has been impeccable of late (3-0 SUATS last here) but they finished this season on a rotten note, losing three of their last four while covering none. We simply can t lay this many points with a team that staggered to the finish line. Especially against an Akron group that is 6-2 ATS this season versus an opponent who allows more than 24 PPG and is led by a veteran head coach that owns a winning bowl record (2-1 SU). We re not sure if Akron s bowl famine ends in a SU win but there s really only one way to look today in Boise. You know what to do. MARMOT BOCA RATON BOWL FAU Stadium Boca Raton, FL Toledo over Temple by 3 Rumor has it that the Boca Raton bowl committee wanted to hire Jackie Mason to do the halftime but were outbid by the local Century Village retirement community. Thus, it should come as no surprise to find the Owls and Rockets garnering only a $400,000 payday for today s efforts. (On a side note, South Florida drug dealers were hoping that Bill Cosby got the halftime nod figuring they would sell out of Quaaludes.) What won t be needed is Ambien as this matchup between defensive-minded teams (Owls allow 19.2 PPG, Rockets allow 21.1 PPG) could possibly put insomniacs to sleep. However, it could be exciting in the late stages before going down to the wire. The question is, who comes out on top? However, we re also not thrilled that Temple is 1-5 SU and 2-4 ATS in this series and 1-10 ATS versus the MAC since 1998 when not residing in the conference. The 5th day of the week has not been kind to either team, however, with the Buccaneers sporting a 2-4 SU and 1-5 ATS all-time mark and the Rams a 2-6 SU and 1-7 ATS record of late on Thursdays. Louie counters with a 7-1 ATS log in Last Home Games against teams seeking revenge, yet its 0-8 ATS ledger in the 3rd of a three-game home stand in which they own a losing record immediately puts the brakes on that thought. Tampa brings a 4-0 ATS mark into the fray when seeking triple revenge, but is 0-4 ATS in this series. All of which leaves our head spinning in this yinyang yawner. Saturday, December 19 New York Jets over DALLAS by 6 It s the time of the year when our weekends become filled with holiday shopping and professional football NFL style. The phrase 3-day weekend has never been more apropos than it is starting today. And with it, let the Saturday night games begin. Our all-knowing database jumps in to remind us that if anything has held true over the years in this league, it s been the success of road teams in regular season Saturday scuffles. That s evidenced by a sterling ATS mark by visiting teams in these skirmishes since All of which makes it difficult to step in front of a fast-closing Jets squad that find themselves clinging to the 6th and final Wild Card seed at the moment. Yes, a big revenge battle with the Patriots is on deck for the Flyboys but that hasn t slowed them up in the past as they are 13-6 SU and 15-4 ATS away in games before taking on New England, including 9-1 ATS when facing a.300 or greater opponent. With Dallas currently holding down the 14th slot in hopes of securing a 6th and final seed in this year s playoff picture, it s time to cue up a retake from legendary Cowboy Don Meredith, who put it best when he would close out the Monday Night football games with this familiar catchphrase: Turn out the lights, the party s over. Sunday, December 20 Chicago over MINNESOTA by 3 If these two teams were flowers, they d likely be shrinking violets. Both enter off a pair of losses at the crucial stretch run portion of the campaign, with the Vikings clinging to the 6th and final Wild Card seed and the Bears lingering around as the projected 12th seed in the playoff race. The questions are whether or not Minnesota is taking the lump, or can Chicago pick itself up off the floor following its fifth straight loss by either a field goal or less, or overtime? Either way, a game that comes down to a field goal would surprise hardly anyone. The Bears bring a solid 4-1 ATS mark in the first of back-to-back road games when facing an opponent off a pair of losses into this fray. In addition, head coach John Fox brings jaw-dropping numbers into this battle, as outlined in this week s TRIVIA TEASER on page 2. Minnesota s 2-15 ATS log in the first of back-to-back home games when facing a revenging division rival makes this an FTD floral holiday delivery. JACKSONVILLE over Atlanta by 1 Oh, how the mighty have fallen. Houston over INDIANAPOLIS by 4 How is it we are passing on a team that is 16-1 SU and ATS in its last 17 division games off a division loss? When it s a team tied atop its division, despite allowing 62 YPG more than it has gained this season is how. As unfathomable as it seems, the Colts are now 1-12 ITS (In The Stats) this campaign. Sure, they may be 23-4 SU all-time in this series, including a spotless 13-0 at home, but our companion publication, the MIDWEEK ALERT, would disown us if we were to start backing them at this point of the season. With Andrew Luck likely sidelined again, it all falls on the shoulders of suddenly senior 40-year old QB Matt Hasselbeck as his numbers continue to plummet (outyarded in all six starts this season by an average 112 YPG). And there s also this matter of revenge for the Texans, who dropped a decision to Hasselbeck and the Colts in early October in a game where Houston outgained Indy, Texans improve to 5-0 ATS in the first of back-to-back away games when facing a division foe here today. Kansas City over BALTIMORE by 10 Move over Matt Schaub and Jimmy Clausen. Make way for Ryan Mallet. The injury-riddled Ravens signed the former Houston Texans backup on Tuesday, paving the way for yet another backup starting quarterback in the NFL this season. Mallet takes his 2-4 SUATS NFL career start mark into the contest knowing Edgar Alan Poe s favorite team is 0-4 ATS in games before facing the Steelers and 1-3 SUATS as a host in this series.
