NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Tuesday, April 24, 2007 TEXANS SELECT 10 TH OVERALL The Houston Texans enter their sixth draft in team history with the 10 th overall selection in the first round for the second time in team history. The Texans have a total of six picks in the 2007 draft after trading their second-round selection to the Atlanta Falcons for QB Matt Schaub. The Texans are guided by first-year GM Rick Smith who joined the organization last June. Smith explains how he has structured the process, we ve taken the best of what was done here in Houston and some new, fresh ideas from other places and tried to formulate a game plan to make sure that on draft day we ve get all the information we need on all the players in order to make good selections. Last season the Texans selected North Carolina State DE Mario Williams with the first pick in the draft. Houston used its second round pick on the consensus Defensive Rookie of the Year LB DeMeco Ryans from the University of Alabama. Houston selected T Charles Spencer and T Eric Winston in the third round, TE Owen Daniels in the fourth, RB Wali Lundy in the sixth and concluded with WR David Anderson in the seventh. Houston s 2006 draft class has been regarded by many as their best to date. QB Matt Schaub (6-5, 237) DT Jeff Zgonina (6-2, 290) T-ATL UFA-MIA TEXANS OFFSEASON ACQUISITIONS The Houston Texans have done an effective job this offseason of acquiring a number of veterans. Houston began the free agency period by signing perennial Pro Bowl RB Ahman Green from Green Bay. Over his nine-year career, Green set Packers records for total yards from scrimmage (10,870) and most 1,000-yard seasons (six). The Texans upgraded their linebackers by signing veterans Danny Clark from New Orleans and Shawn Barber from Philadelphia. Continuing the re-shape their defense, the Texans signed DT Jeff Zgonina and CB Jamar Fletcher. On the offensive side of the ball, Houston signed T Jordan Black from Kansas City. Black started 15 regular season games a year ago and the Chiefs Wild Card game at Indianapolis. Houston solidified their quarterback position by acquiring Matt Schaub via trade from Atlanta. GM Rick Smith feels confident in Schaub s ability to contribute to the Texans. Matt is what an NFL quarterback should be; a leader, strong, smart, accurate passer and we re excited about having him, Smith said. As we looked at the free agent market and then the draft to try to assess how we can get better at the position, we entertained a lot of ideas and a lot of thoughts, but at the end of the day the acquisition that we re making today is just the perfect one for us. This will mark the second time that the Texans have picked 10th. They drafted CB Dunta Robinson 10th overall in A look back at the 40 players drafted with the 10th pick since the common draft began in 1967 shows an even 20/20 split between offensive and defensive players. The most popular positions have been defensive back and wide receiver, with seven apiece. Some of the most notable players taken with the 10th pick are Hall of Fame RB Marcus Allen (1982, Raiders) and potential Hall of Famers RB Jerome Bettis (1993, L.A. Rams) and DB Rod Woodson (1987, Steelers). WRs Herman Moore (1991, Lions) and Al Toon (1985, Jets) were also drafted at No. 10. With the exception of 2005, Houston has emphasized one position more heavily than others in every draft in franchise history. In 2004, the Texans paid special attention to three positions, using seven of their nine picks in that year s draft on three positions three on linebackers and two each on cornerbacks and safeties. 11 TAKE A SECOND FOR SCHAUB Houston is without a pick in round two of this year s draft after trading its second-round picks in this year s and next year s draft to Atlanta in exchange for QB Matt Schaub. Schaub, originally a third-round pick (90th overall) of the Falcons in 2004, was a restricted free agent and was widely considered the best quarterback available on the free agent market. The second round has been a traditional trade chip for the Texans. Houston also gave up its second-round picks in 2004 and When the team has held on to the pick, they have done a solid job of finding future starters. In 2002, Houston grabbed WR Jabar Gaffney and G Chester Pitts in round two. Gaffney is second on the team s all-time lists for receptions and receiving yards, while Pitts is the only player to have started every game in Texans history. TE Bennie Joppru was the pick in 2003 and showed great promise before a series of injuries derailed his progress. With the first pick in the second round last year, the Texans grabbed a player who turned out to be the most productive rookie in over two decades. LB DeMeco Ryans won AP Defensive Rookie of the Year honors after racking up 156 tackles, a number greater than any rookie in 20 years. THIRD ROUND ON THE LINE A large part of the Texans offensive line has come by way of the third round. Last year, Houston used the first two picks in the round to nab offensive tackles Charles Spencer and Eric Winston. Spencer opened the season as the starting left tackle before suffering a seasonending injury, and Winston started the final seven games at right tackle. In 2002, the Texans picked up G Fred Weary in the third round. Weary has played in 51 games with 31 starts in five years. FOURTH-ROUND PHENOMS The fourth round has been a tremendous source of talent for the Texans in every draft in franchise history. In five years, the fourth round has produced an All-Pro kick returner, the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, a first-team All- Rookie tight end, a starting safety and a starting running back. Last year, Houston used the first pick in the fourth round to nab TE Owen Daniels. Daniels quickly ascended to the top of the depth chart and emerged from training camp as the opening-day starter at tight end. Daniels finished his rookie campaign with a Texans rookie-record five touchdown catches among his 34 grabs for 350 yards. The Texans selected WR Jerome Mathis with the 114th overall selection in With a 28.6-yard kickoff return average and a league-leading two kick returns for touchdowns, Mathis was named to the All-Pro team at kick returner. He joined Tyrone Hughes (5th round, 1993) of New Orleans and Johnny Johnson (7th round, 1990) of the Phoenix (Arizona) Cardinals as the only rookies since 1990 to be selected to the Pro Bowl after being drafted in the fourth round or later. In 2004, Houston nabbed SS Glenn Earl from Notre Dame. In three years with the Texans, Earl has played in 37 games with 31 starts and has recorded 186 tackles, three interceptions and 12 passes defensed. The Texans used their fourth-round pick in the 2003 draft on RB Domanick Williams, who rushed for 1,031 yards during his rookie season and earned NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. The LSU product is the Texans all-time leading rusher with 3,195 yards in three seasons. In 2002, Houston selected RB Jonathan Wells with the 99th overall selection. The former Ohio State star rushed for 1,167 yards and 10 touchdowns in four years and caught 44 passes for 323 yards and two touchdowns. 11 HoustonTexans.com/media

STARTERS IN THE SIXTH The Texans have done a good job on the second day of the draft over the last five years, and have had particular success in the sixth round. Three of last season s opening-day starters were drafted in the sixth round by Houston. RB Wali Lundy led the team in rushing during the preseason and opened the season as Houston s starting running back. Lundy finished second on the team with 476 yards and four touchdowns. Houston s secondary featured a pair of former sixth-round picks in the starting lineup. FS C.C. Brown, the team s sixth-round pick in 2005, has started 28 of 31 games in two years and has racked up 177 tackles, one sack, two interceptions and two forced fumbles. CB Demarcus Faggins was the first of two players picked in the sixth round of the 2002 draft. Faggins emerged as a starter in 2005 and has become one of the biggest playmakers on the team. He has five career interceptions and two fumble recoveries, and leads all Texans defenders with two career returns for touchdowns TEXANS DRAFT RECAP The Texans 2006 draft class: (L-R) WR David Anderson, RB Wali Lundy, LB DeMeco Ryans, T Charles Spencer, DE Mario Williams, T Eric Winston, and TE Owen Daniels. In 2006, the Houston Texans held the first overall selection in the NFL Draft for the second time in team history. In 2002, the selection of David Carr to be the team s franchise quarterback was known well before draft day, but 2006 brought significantly more intrigue. On the eve of the draft, the Texans shocked the football world by announcing that the team would make North Carolina State defensive end Mario Williams the first overall pick in the draft. Widely considered the best defensive player available in the draft, he was compared by many to Carolina Panthers defensive end Julius Peppers, the second overall pick behind Carr in The 6-6, 293-pound Williams set N.C. State career records for sacks, with 26.5, and tackles for loss, with 55.5, earning consensus All-American honors as a junior in Williams is the rare defensive end who also possesses the size and strength to dominate in the running game. The Texans continued to address needs on defense in Round 2, selecting Alabama linebacker DeMeco Ryans with the first choice in the round. The 2005 Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Year, Ryans was a consensus first-team All-American in 2005 after leading the nation s second-ranked defense with 76 tackles. Like Williams, Ryans quickly found his way into the starting lineup. Houston held the first two picks of Round 3, and used both selections to grab a pair of bookend offensive tackles. Charles Spencer, from Pittsburgh, was chosen with the 65th overall selection and Eric Winston of Miami (Fla.) was taken one slot later. Spencer displayed his potential early on, winning the starting left tackle job during training camp. At Pitt, he played on the defensive line until his junior year, and only played one year at tackle, but despite his inexperience, Spencer earned second-team All- Big East honors following his junior and senior seasons. Winston came to Miami as a tight end, but shifted to tackle as a sophomore. Entering his junior season, he was looked at as Miami s next great tackle and was considered one of the HoustonTexans.com/media 12

best up-and-coming linemen in the nation. A torn ACL slowed his development, but Winston returned to form as a senior in 2005 to earn firstteam All-American recognition. Holding the first pick of Round 4, the Texans had all night to think about their choice, and they decided on Wisconsin tight end Owen Daniels. A converted high school quarterback, Daniels played his last three seasons at tight end and finished his career in Madison with 62 receptions for 852 yards and eight touchdowns in a primarily run-oriented offense. Before the draft, the Texans dealt their fifth-round pick to Buffalo in a trade for WR Eric Moulds, a threetime Pro Bowl selection. Head coach Gary Kubiak stayed true to his Denver roots in Round 6 and chose a running back. Many of the backs who saw such great success in Denver were late round picks, and the Texans are hopeful that Virginia RB Wali Lundy can have the same type of success. The 5-10, 214-pound Lundy left Charlottesville as the Cavaliers all-time career leader in touchdowns with 52. Lundy led the Texans in rushing during the preseason and entered the regular season as the starter at running back. Houston wrapped up its 2006 draft class by selecting receiver David Anderson from Colorado State in Round 7. Anderson is undersized by today s standards at 5-9 and 194 pounds, but his excellent speed and hands convinced the Texans to take him. Anderson set school single-season records with 1,282 receiving yards on 72 catches in 2003, and his 15 career 100-yard receiving games broke the Rams career record of 13. TEXANS RACK UP ROOKIE HONORS Based on awards, the 2006 draft class was the best in franchise history. Rookies led the team in tackles and receiving touchdowns, and rookies finished second in sacks and rushing yards. Led by LB DeMeco Ryans, who won AP Defensive Rookie of the Year honors and was the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Month in December and Week 13 AFC Defensive Player of the Week, the class received numerous league honors as well. DE Mario Williams, who the Texans selected with the first overall pick in April s draft, also received consideration for AP Defensive Rookie of the Year, making the Texans the only team with two players who received votes for the award. Ryans was also named Pro Football Weekly/Professional Football Writers of America Defensive Rookie of the Year, joining CB Dunta Robinson as the second Texans rookie to win that honor. TE Owen Daniels, the team s fourth-round pick, and Ryans were named to the PFW/PFWA All-Rookie Team. Houston has had at least one rookie named to the PFW/PFWA All-Rookie team after each of the franchise s five seasons. This was the second time that the Texans have had multiple players named to the squad. RB Domanick Williams and WR Andre Johnson were both named to the All-Rookie team in Houston Texans Rookie of the Year Winners AP Defensive Rookie of the Year LB DeMeco Ryans 2006 PFW/PFWA Defensive Rookie of the Year LB DeMeco Ryans 2006 CB Dunta Robinson 2004 Pepsi Rookie of the Year RB Domanick Williams 2003 Houston Texans named to PFW/PFWA All-Rookie Team Player Position Year Carr, David QB 2002 Johnson, Andre WR 2003 Williams, Domanick RB 2003 Robinson, Dunta CB 2004 Mathis, Jerome KR 2005 Daniels, Owen TE 2006 Ryans, DeMeco LB HoustonTexans.com/media

OUT OF THE FRYING PAN The Texans started five rookies in the season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles (9/10), more than any other team in the NFL. Number one overall pick Mario Williams started at defensive end and second-round choice DeMeco Ryans started at middle linebacker. On the offensive side of the ball, thirdround pick Charles Spencer won the starting left tackle job, and fourth-round draft choice Owen Daniels played his way into the starting lineup at tight end. Sixth-round pick Wali Lundy was the opening day starter at running back. Rookies starting in season openers was nothing new for Houston. In the team s inaugural game against the Dallas Cowboys, Houston trotted out five rookie starters on offense on their way to a win over the Dallas Cowboys. Here is a look at the Texans rookie starts in franchise history: 2002 WR Jabar Gaffney, LT Chester Pitts, RG Fred Weary, QB David Carr and FB Jarrod Baxter 2003 WR Andre Johnson 2004 CB Dunta Robinson and LB Jason Babin 2005 SS C.C. Brown 2006 DE Mario Williams, MLB DeMeco Ryans, LT Charles Spencer, TE Owen Daniels, RB Wali Lundy HEAD OF THE CLASS Following the 2006 NFL Draft, many analysts called Houston s draft one of the best in the league, and the Texans rookie class validated that assessment all season long. Texans rookies led the team in receiving touchdowns and tackles, and rookies were second in rushing and second and third in sacks. No team in NFL history has seen rookies lead their team in all four categories. The 1995 Houston Oilers came the closest when Rodney Thomas led the team with 947 rushing yards, Chris Sanders made nine touchdown receptions and Anthony Cook was tied for the team lead with 4.5 sacks. DE Mario Williams, the first overall pick in the draft, was second on the team and set a franchise rookie record with 4.5 sacks this season. Williams recorded a sack in three straight games from 10/22 against Jacksonville to 11/5 at the Giants, the second-longest such streak in team history. Second-round pick LB DeMeco Ryans led the team with 156 total tackles, including 126 solo stops, and was third on the team with 3.5 sacks. Ryans 156 tackles were the most by a rookie in the last 20 years, and he led all NFL defenders in solo tackles. Fourth-round pick TE Owen Daniels tied for the team lead and set a franchise rookie record with five receiving touchdowns this year. His five touchdowns were tied for the seventhmost in the NFL by a tight end this season and were more than any other rookie tight end this year. Despite being inactive for two games, sixth-round pick RB Wali Lundy was second on the team with 476 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns. Additionally, both of the offensive tackles that the Texans selected in the third round have played key roles on offense. T Charles Spencer started the first two games at left tackle before breaking a bone in his leg, and T Eric Winston made his first career start at RT against Buffalo on 11/19 and started the final seven games of the season. 15 TE Owen Daniels 34 catches*, 352 yards*, 5 TDs* RB Wali Lundy 124 rushes, 476 yards, 4 TDs * - led all NFL rookies ** - led NFL 2006 CLASS WAS 7 FOR 7 The Texans 2006 draft class was given consistently positive grades from observers around the league in April, and they spent the entire 2006 season validating that praise. For the first time in franchise history, every draft choice played as a rookie. Six of the team s seven draft picks started, and the team s first two choices, DE Mario Williams and MLB DeMeco Ryans, each started all 16 games. In addition, TE Owen Daniels, the team s fourth-round pick, started 12 games. RB Wali Lundy, a sixthrounder, started seven games, and tackles Charles Spencer and Eric Winston, both thirdround picks, combined to start nine games OFFENSIVE REVIEW The Texans offense entered the 2006 season looking to establish a foundation for success after struggling to put points on the board in Under the guidance of first-year head coach Gary Kubiak and offensive coordinator Troy Calhoun, that is exactly what happened. The scheme installed by the former Denver offensive coordinator is the same one that made the Broncos one of the most prolific attacks in the NFL over the previous 11 years. The hallmark of the Denver offense under Kubiak was the running game, particularly the fact that undrafted free agents and late-round draft picks seemingly came out of nowhere to rush for 1,000 yards or more every year. The Texans struggled on the ground early this season as they grew more accustomed to the zone blocking concepts employed by Kubiak, but there were flashes of improvement over the second half of the year. Veteran free agent Ron Dayne, the NCAA s all-time leading rusher and the 1999 Heisman Trophy winner, led the team with 612 yards this season, including 429 yards in December, marking the best month of his career. Rookie Wali Lundy, a sixth-round draft pick, followed a 93-yard, one touchdown game against Jacksonville (10/22) with 116 yards at Tennessee (10/29). Samkon Gado, who the Texans acquired via trade, converted a key fourth-and-one rush to seal the victory at Jacksonville (11/12). Despite the early struggles on the ground, Houston s passing attack flourished this season. WR Andre Johnson returned to his Pro Bowl form of 2004 with a career-best 103 catches for 1,147 yards, including four 100-yard receiving games. His reception total was tops in the league, and his yardage total was the 11thbest. His five touchdown catches were tied for the most on the team The tight ends were more involved in the attack than at any other time in franchise history. Rookie Owen Daniels tied for seventh in the league among tight ends with five touchdowns, setting franchise records for touchdowns by a tight end and by a rookie, and veteran Mark Bruener caught a pair of touchdowns on the year. Their seven combined scores were the most in a season by the tight end position in franchise history. None of this would have been possible, however, without improved play from the offensive line. The new scheme emphasized more mobile linemen and featured more moving pockets, which helped give Carr more time to throw. Texans passers were sacked 43 times in 2006, compared to 68 times in DEFENSIVE REVIEW As much change as the offense went through, the Texans defense saw every bit as much, if not more. Defensive coordinator Richard Smith 15 HoustonTexans.com/media

changed the defense from the ground up, switching from the familiar 3-4 alignment used the previous four seasons to a 4-3 setup. By putting an extra lineman on the field, the defense hoped to be better able to control the line of scrimmage. The Texans were more active this offseason than in any other year in team history, bringing in veterans to add stability and leadership with the obvious goal of shoring up the defense in mind. The most striking move of the offseason came in April, when the team selected North Carolina State defensive end Mario Williams with the first overall pick in the draft. Williams, a 6-6, 293- pound athletic phenom, was hampered by foot injuries throughout his rookie campaign, but his combination of size and speed allowed Smith the freedom to be creative with his defensive schemes throughout the season. At linebacker, the addition of rookie DeMeco Ryans in the middle and the move of veteran Morlon Greenwood to the outside helped shore up the unit. The defensive backfield returned intact from 2005, with cornerback Dunta Robinson, whose nine career INTs rank second in team history, emerging as the leader of the secondary. The Texans defense improved throughout the course of the season, shaving nearly 180 yards off of their per-game average from the beginning of the season to the end.
