HEAD COACH INFORMATION GARY KUBIAK Houston Texans Head Coach : Head Coach, Houston Texans : Offensive Coordinator, Denver Broncos : Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks, Denver Broncos 1994: Quarterbacks, San Francisco 49ers : Running Backs, Texas A&M In just four seasons at the helm, Gary Kubiak has become the winningest head coach in Texans history with 25 career victories, including the two best seasons in team history. One of Kubiak s primary goals upon arriving in Houston was to create a home field advantage at Reliant Stadium, and he has made great strides in that direction. The Texans have posted a home record since 2006, including 6-2 marks in each of the last two seasons. The 2008 Texans matched their record from the year before, going 8-8 for a second straight year despite an 0-4 start in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike, which devastated much of Houston and southeast Texas. Houston became just the 10th team in NFL history to start a year 0-4 and finish at or above.500. Houston was one of 11 teams to go 8-4 or better over the last 12 games and nine of those teams were in the playoffs. The offense enjoyed its most productive season, ranking third in the NFL and setting a franchise record with 6,113 total yards. Year two for Kubiak saw the team achieve the best record in franchise history, finishing 8-8. The Texans won three of their last four and five of their last seven to finish the season at.500. Closing the season strong has become a hallmark of Kubiak s teams. In Kubiak s three seasons in Houston, the Texans are a combined 10-5 in the month of December. Another point of emphasis under Kubiak has been developing a true home field advantage, and the team is well on its way to accomplishing that mission. After going 4-4 at Reliant Stadium in 2006, which was the best home mark at the time, Kubiak s troops posted a 6-2 mark at home the past two years. Mike Singletary San Francisco 49ers Head Coach : San Francisco 49ers, Head Coach : San Francisco 49ers, Asst. Head Coach/ Defense 2005: San Francisco 49ers, Asst. Head Coach/ Linebackers : Baltimore Ravens, Inside Linebackers When Mike Singletary took over as the 49ers interim head coach midway through the 2008 season, it was a welcome challenge that Singletary conquered as the 49ers went on to record five victories in the final seven games of the 2008 season. Singletary s first opportunity to coach came with the Baltimore Ravens as the team s inside linebackers coach in In two seasons with Baltimore, Singletary led a prolific group of linebackers to even higher heights. In fact, All-Pro Ray Lewis earned NFL Defensive Player of the Year honors in During his tenure, Baltimore s defense ranked third in the NFL in 2003 and sixth overall the following year. When Mike Nolan accepted the 49ers head coaching position in 2005, Singletary was his first hire as assistant head coach and linebackers coach. A year later he would be elevated to assistant head coach/defense. Singletary was selected by the Chicago Bears in the second round of the 1981 NFL Draft with the 38th overall pick. Throughout his pro career, he was a two-time Associated Press Defensive Player of the Year award winner (1985 & 1988) and named to the NFL Team of the 80s after being selected to play in a teamrecord 10 consecutive Pro Bowls. The former Bears defensive captain was also named first-team All-Pro eight times ( ; 1991), second-team All-Pro twice and All-NFC nine times. Singletary finished each of his final 11 seasons on Chicago s defense ranked either first or second in tackles and at the end of his career had amassed 1,488 tackles, 885 solo tackles, 51 passes defensed, 12 fumble recoveries and seven interceptions. He also started a defensive team-record 172 games for the Bears, trailing only running back Walter Payton s 184 career starts for the all-time lead.

TEXANS VS. 49ERS GAME PREVIEW Rick Smith Houston Texans General Manager : General Manager, Houston Texans 2006: Assistant General Manager, Denver Broncos : Director of Pro Personnel, Denver Broncos : Defensive Assistant, Denver Broncos With Rick Smith at the helm of the Texans football operations, Houston has accumulated 25 wins over the four seasons since 2006, giving him the most wins for a general manager in Texans history. Houston posted 16 wins in which ranked fifth-most among AFC teams. Smith has assembled a front office staff that has the Texans pointed towards sustained success in the NFL. Smith has established himself as a prominent voice around the league in his three years at the helm of the Texans. Smith was honored with the Tank Younger Award in 2008 presented annually by the Fritz Pollard Alliance for outstanding work in an NFL front office. Smith was an original member of the General Managers Advisory Committee that provides advice and other feedback to the NFL Football Operations department on the integrity of the game, expansion of technology and other ways to improve the game, before being appointed to the NFL s prestigious eight-man Competition Committee by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. Smith has assembled a team that has closed the season by winning seven out of nine games in the month of December over the last two seasons, the fourth-most in the NFL. This offseason, the Texans acquired DE Antonio Smith from the NFC Champion The San Francisco 49ers are 3-2 and tied for first place in the NFC West Division heading into Week 7 against the Texans. San Francisco had their bye week last weekend, but the last time out, they suffered a crushing defeat to the Atlanta Falcons, who scored 31 unanswered points over the last three quarters to put the game away. Mike Singletary is in his first full season as head coach of the 49ers. He served as interim head coach for the last seven games of 2008 after Mike Nolan was fired. The team responded immediately, winning five of those seven games to end the season with a 7-9 record, placing them second in the NFC West, two games behind the eventual NFC Champion Arizona Cardinals. Singletary served as the assistant head coach/defense for the previous two-plus seasons before taking over head coaching duties and is now in his fifth season with the team. Shaun Hill was named the starting quarterback midway through the 2008 season, and has compiled a 10-5 record, which has helped him retain the starting position over former number one overall draft choice Alex Smith. So far in, Hill has completed 81 of 144

GAME INFORMATION pass attempts for 898 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions for a passer rating of 80.7 (24th in the NFL). The strength of San Francisco s offense lies in the running game with Pro Bowl RB Frank Gore, who is the first 49er in team history to record three consecutive 1,000 yard rushing seasons. His 3,833 rushing yards over the past three years rank as the secondmost in the league during that time span, trailing only San Diego s LaDainian Tomlinson. This season, Gore was named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week in Week 2 when he rushed for 207 yards and two touchdowns against Seattle. He was sidelined the following week however with a right ankle strain and a hind right foot sprain and has been out since. He is expected to return to the lineup this week against the Texans. In his absence, rookie RB Glen Coffee has struggled to replicate Gore s production but has put up 183 yards on 71 carries and a touchdown. The 49ers had not had a wideout with more than 61 receptions since Terrell Owens departure after the 2003 season. Looking to address the position, they selected one of the most prolific wide receivers in college football history, WR Michael Crabtree out of Texas Tech, with the 10th overall selection in the NFL Draft. The team has yet to benefit from Crabtree s presence as the first round pick held out for over two months. He is expected to make his NFL debut against the Texans. San Francisco is currently ranked 30th in the league in total receiving yards through Week 6. Their leading receiver through five games has been TE Vernon Davis, who has 22 receptions for 262 yards and three touchdowns. WR Isaac Bruce returns for his second season as a 49er after leading the team with 61 receptions, 835 receiving yards and 7 touchdowns last year, earning the team s coveted Len Eshmont Award in his first year with the squad. Bruce was selected to the Pro Bowl four times as a wide receiver for the St. Louis Rams from 1994 to On the defensive side of the ball, third-year LB Patrick Willis is the leader of the group. As a rookie in 2007, Willis earned All-Pro, Pro Bowl and NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year honors. In 2008, he led the 49ers in tackles for the second straight season which earned him a spot in the Pro Bowl for the second time. So far in, Willis has 49 tackles (35 solo) with 2.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and two interceptions. S Michael Lewis is also a former Pro Bowl player who is in his third season in San Francisco and has averaged tackles a year in his first two seasons with the club. He currently stands second to Willis in tackles with 30 (22 solo) in. The 49ers have a consistent group of special teams performers, led by P Andy Lee and veteran K Joe Nedney. Lee has established himself as one of the best in the league. His back-to-back averages of 47.3 and 47.8 in are the two best for a 49ers punter in 60 years. Nedney s 87.8 percent field goal accuracy is the best in 49ers history among kickers with at least 100 attempts. Veteran Arnaz Battle, the No. 3 wideout, is expected to be counted upon for contributions in the return game. TEXANS/49ERS SERIES HISTORY The Texans and 49ers meet for the second time in this short series. San Francisco owns a 1-0 series lead following a win to end the 2005 season. Houston enters Sunday s game with a 1-4 record against the NFC West. This marks the first time the 49ers have visited Reliant Stadium. The $425 million building is the first retractable roof stadium in the NFL and is also the new home of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Reliant Stadium was also host to Super Bowl XXXVIII in The roof is composed of two panels - each 240 feet long and 385 feet wide - that meet at midfield. In addition to the roof, another unique feature to the stadium is the removable grass field. The field is composed of 8-foot by 8-foot square modules that are 8 inches deep and include a metal drainage base. There are approximately 1,250 modules in the field, with each one weighing about 3,500 pounds. Here are some other facts about Reliant Stadium: The Texans also added a few more seats to Reliant Stadium for Super Bowl XXXVIII, increasing the seating capacity to 71,054. The stadium entered the 2002 season with 69,500 seats. The two video boards located behind the north and south end zones measure 96 ½ feet by 26 ½ feet and are the largest in the NFL and can display one image or six different images simultaneously. The roof weighs a total of 3,000 tons and is covered in translucent fabric. It can open in 7-10 minutes. Total size of the building 1.9 million square feet. The decision to open or close the roof is made one hour and 30 minutes prior to kickoff. If the roof is closed at kickoff, it stays closed for the remainder of the game. If the roof is open at kickoff, it is up to the official to decide whether the roof should be closed at some point during the course of the game.

GAME INFORMATION If the roof is open with five minutes left in the game, it must stay open for the remainder of the game. THE RULE With the roof damage suffered from Hurricane Ike early last season repaired, the Texans again have the option of playing in ideal conditions. The Texans introduced the rule in 2005 which implies that the roof will be open the when the game time temperature is projected to be between 50 and 80 degrees. The goal for implementing the Rule is to provide the most comfortable environment possible for fans to enjoy Houston Texans home games. The expected high for Sunday s matchup is in the high- 70 s at kickoff, with 0% threat of rain meaning Reliant Stadium could possibly be open for the first time this season. HOUSTON S RAVING FANS The Texans have played to sellout crowds since entering the NFL. The Texans increased the Reliant Stadium capacity following the 2002 season to 71,054, incorporating more Raving Fans. Houston has sold out 75 consecutive games and looks to continue the trend in. The Texans are looking to continue their streak of selling out every preseason and regular season game in team history. Sunday s matchup against San Francisco will extend the streak to 76. 13 OFFENSIVE OVERVIEW OFFENSIVE OVERVIEW The Texans offense came into the season intent on improving on its performance in 2008 when it turned in the most productive season in franchise history, gaining a franchise-record 6,113 yards. Houston s yardage total ranked third in the NFL last season under first-year offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan. Houston s 4,267 passing yards were also a franchise record, and the team s 1,846 rushing yards were the second-most in club history. Despite ranking third in the league in yards, the Texans were just 17th in scoring, averaging 22.9 points per game. The cause of that disparity was turnovers, and that will be a major point of focus throughout training camp. Houston is 15-2 under head coach Gary Kubiak when winning the turnover battle. Calling the signals under center once again is QB Matt Schaub. In his second year as a starter, Schaub passed for 3,043 yards and 15 touchdowns in 11 starts. It was his first career 3,000-yard season. Schaub was 6-5 as a starter last season. His overall record with the Texans is Schaub s primary receiving option will once again be WR Andre Johnson, who has established himself as arguably the best receiver in the NFL. Johnson s 1,575 receiving yards and his 115 receptions were both tops in the league in 2008, making him the first player to lead the league in both categories since On the ground, Houston will look to second-year RB Steve Slaton, who led all NFL rookies with a franchise-record 1,282 rushing yards a year ago. Slaton led the team in rushing in 15 of 16 games, and his five 100- yard games were a team single-season record. In addition to Johnson, Schaub had a number of other weapons to throw to, led by WR Kevin Walter and TE Owen Daniels. Walter tied for third in the AFC with eight touchdown catches, while Daniels was second among AFC tight ends with 862 receiving yards. Walter and Johnson formed the top receiving duo in the NFL in 2008, while Daniels and Johnson comprised the top receiver-tight end combination in the league. The key to the offense s success in 2008, however, was the offensive line. Under the leadership of T Eric Winston, who has started the last 44 games at RT, the line paved the way for a franchise-record 4.3-yard rushing average and allowed a mere 32 sacks on 555 pass attempts. OFFENSE POSITION BY POSITION Quarterbacks The Texans offense is in the highly capable hands of Matt Schaub once again in. Schaub started 11 games in his second season in Houston, throwing for 3,043 yards and leading the Texans to a 6-5 record. Schaub posted elite numbers in 2008, finishing among the league s top 10 passers in four categories. He was fourth in the NFL with passing yards per game, fourth with a 66.1 percent completion rate, eighth with a 92.7 passer rating and second with 8.01 yards per attempt. In three seasons as the Texans starter, Schaub has thrown for 7,094 yards with 38 touchdowns and 24 interceptions. Schaub has posted a quarterback rating of 93.4 since joining the team, which is by far the highest in franchise history among quarterbacks with at least 200 pass attempts. Rex Grossman comes to Houston after spending the first six years of his career in Chicago, where he guided the Bears to Super Bowl XLI in The Bears first-round pick in 2003, Grossman has thrown for 6,164 yards with 33 touchdowns and 35 interceptions in his career. Houston signed Dan Orlovsky on the opening weekend of free agency. Orlovsky started seven games in 2008 for the Detroit Lions, completing 143-of- 255 passes for 1,616 yards with eight touchdowns and eight interceptions.

OFFENSIVE OVERVIEW Running Backs Houston s rushing attack in 2008 was led by rookie Steve Slaton, who burst onto the scene with a franchise-record 1,282 rushing yards and nine touchdowns on his way to winning the rookie rushing title. Slaton led the AFC with 1,659 total yards from scrimmage. In just 22 career games, Slaton has already moved into second place on the franchise s all-time rushing list with 1,556 career rushing yards. Wide Receivers The Texans receiving corps, led by All-Pro Andre Johnson, will look to remain one of the deepest and most dangerous groups in the NFL. Johnson led the league in receptions (115) and receiving yards (1,575) a year ago and tied his own team record with eight touchdown catches. Johnson has 514 career receptions for 6,951 yards and 37 touchdowns. Since 2006, Johnson has been the most productive receiver in the NFL, averaging 88.2 yards per game. One of the team s priorities during training camp is to find a bigger back to provide a change of pace from the diminutive but speedy Slaton. Veteran Chris Brown will get the first crack at the role. After spending all of 2008 on injured reserve, Brown will look to showcase his abilities in the preseason. Brown has run for 2,863 yards and 17 touchdowns in his career. Fifth-year pro Ryan Moats backed up Slaton during the second half of the 2008 season and rushed for 94 yards on 26 carries. In five pro seasons, Moats has totaled 497 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Moats also has experience as a kick returner, averaging 21.6 yards on 13 career returns. Fullback Vonta Leach played in every game and served as a team captain several times late in the 2008 season. His primary function will again be to clear running room for Slaton and the Texans other running backs. Leach has proven to be a reliable receiver out of the backfield with 57 career receptions for 359 yards and three touchdowns. Kevin Walter will once again line up opposite Johnson. Walter enjoyed the best season of his career in 2008, catching 60 passes for 876 yards and tying Johnson for the team lead with a career-high eight touchdown catches. Walter and Johnson formed the most productive receiving duo in the NFL last year, combining for 2,474 receiving yards. David Anderson played in all 16 games last season, catching 19 passes for 241 yards and two touchdowns all career highs. Anderson entered his fourth season looking to continue expanding his role in the offense. André Davis returns as one of the preeminent deep threats in the league. Since joining the Texans in 2007, Davis has caught 49 passes for 810 yards and three touchdowns. He has nine receptions of 25 yards or longer, meaning nearly one out of every five catches results in a big gain. Third-year pro Jacoby Jones has made his mark returning punts, but will enter training camp looking to turn his tremendous athleticism into consistent playing time in the offense. In three seasons, Jones has caught 26 passes for 365 yards and three touchdowns. Veteran Glenn Martinez joined the Texans as a free agent after spending the first three years of his career with the Denver Broncos. Martinez has played in 19 games with one start and has caught 18 passes for 218 yards in his career.

OFFENSIVE OVERVIEW Tight Ends The tight end position is headlined by Pro Bowler Owen Daniels, who enters the 2008 season intent on cementing his status as one of the league s best tight ends. Daniels ranked second on the team a year ago with 70 catches, and his 862 receiving yards and two touchdowns were both third on the squad. In four seasons, he has caught 199 passes for 2,356 yards and 14 touchdowns. Joel Dreessen emerged as a terrific compliment to Daniels as a receiver in 2008 and provided valuable insurance on special teams as a reserve long snapper. Dreessen played in all 16 games a year ago and caught 11 passes for 77 yards. After re-signing with the Texans over the offseason, Dreessen has caught 25 passes for 225 yards and two scores in his four-year career.. Houston used a pair of picks in the NFL Draft on tight ends, both of whom bring different skills to the table. The Texans drafted Anthony Hill in the fourth round (122nd overall) out of North Carolina State. Hill, a Houston native, is a powerful blocker and will be looked upon to put those skills to use in the Texans running game. In the fifth round (152nd overall), Houston nabbed James Casey out of Rice. A sure-handed receiver with surprising speed, Casey has the ability to line up anywhere on the field. Jacksonville (9/27) after G Chester Pitts was placed on the reserve/injured list. Studdard took the majority of the reps with the first team at LG in Pitts place during training camp. He saw action in two games in the 2008 season and has played in eight games with two starts in his career. Duane Brown, Houston s first-round pick in 2008, started every game in his rookie season at LT after he won the job during training camp. In his sophomore campaign, Brown will look to become more consistent. At RT, Eric Winston has started 45 consecutive games for the Texans. Winston, a third-round pick in the 2006 draft, has started every game over the last two seasons and is widely considered one of the best right tackles in the league. Fourth-year pro Rashad Butler is slated to be the primary backup at both tackle spots. Butler has played in eight career games but was inactive for all 16 contests a year ago. His strength and quickness allow him to block edge rushers on either side. Offensive Line The Texans offensive line paved the way for the most prolific offense in team history in 2008, averaging yards per game. The 32 sacks the line allowed last year were the second-fewest in franchise history, and the team s 1,846 rushing yards were second-most in team history. Fifth-year veteran Chris Myers, who joined the team via trade last year, has started the last 38 straight games, including 22 straight at center for the Texans. Myers will be the man tasked with setting the protection schemes on each play. Rookie Antoine Caldwell, the team s thirdround draft pick (77th overall) out of Alabama, has the versatility to play any of the three interior line positions. He was also the only player in Alabama history to graduate in under three years, a testament to his intelligence. Fifth-year veteran Chris White moved into the starting lineup in Week 6 after Mike Brisiel was placed on the reserve/injured list. White served as the primary backup at center and guard early in the season. He has seen action in 10 games with one start over the last two seasons. Kasey Studdard, the team s sixth-round pick in the 2007 draft, made his first career start in Week 3 vs.

DEFENSIVE OVERVIEW DEFENSIVE OVERVIEW Houston s defense in will take on a new look thanks to the addition of new defensive coordinator Frank Bush. Bush was promoted from his previous post as senior defensive assistant on January 13. This season will mark Bush s first opportunity to call plays on defense. He has advocated an aggressive philosophy intent on making plays in the offensive backfield. One of the biggest keys to any successful defense is strength up front, and the Texans have the pieces in place to field one of the best defensive fronts in team history, led by the Pro Bowl tandem of DE Mario Williams and LB DeMeco Ryans. Williams will be joined by a new face on the other end of the line. DE Antonio Smith joined the Texans as a free agent after helping the Arizona Cardinals come within seconds of winning the Super Bowl last year. Third-year DT Amobi Okoye will also play a vital role in the pass rush and is looking to bounce back from a disappointing sophomore campaign. Ryans battled injuries throughout last season but still managed to lead the team in tackles yet again. He ll have more help in thanks to first-round draft pick Brian Cushing out of USC. Cushing excelled at rushing the passer in college, but also possesses the agility to drop into coverage. The projected starting lineup in the secondary features three returning starters, led by CBs Dunta Robinson and Jacques Reeves. Robinson is the franchise s all-time leader with 13 career interceptions; and Reeves had a team-high four interceptions in The secondary will look to improve upon its interception total of 12 last year, which tied for 21st in the NFL. Seventh-year FS Eugene Wilson will again call the shots in the backfield, and free agent addition SS Bernard Pollard adds a physical presence. DEFENSE POSITION BY POSITION Defensive Line A year after his team-record 14-sack season in 2007, defensive end Mario Williams anchored the Texans defensive line with 12 sacks and was named to his first Pro Bowl in Williams finished 2008 with more sacks than any other AFC defensive end. He had 55 tackles, four forced fumbles and six tackles for loss. Williams looks to further entrench himself as one of the best pass rushers in the league in his fourth season. Williams will have a new face on the opposite end of the line this season. Antonio Smith joined the Texans as a free agent after helping the Arizona Cardinals to Super Bowl XLIII. Smith notched 5.5 sacks in each of the last two years, including two in the playoffs last season. Smith has the speed to get around offensive tackles, but his size and strength will allow the coaches to move him inside in passing situations. Tim Bulman earned a spot on the 53-man roster last year and finished second on the team with a career-high four sacks among 17 total tackles. Bulman, a converted defensive tackle, has slimmed down to 275 pounds in hopes of gaining speed and quickness. Houston spent its second-round pick (46th overall) on Connor Barwin out of Cincinnati. Barwin brings tremendous athleticism and versatility to the position. He played tight end for three years before switching to defensive end as a senior, when he recorded 12 sacks and earned All-America honors. Barwin picked up his first career sack in Week 6 at Cincinnati (10/18). Rookie free agent Tim Jamison rounds out the depth chart at end after being signed to the active roster on October 6. Jamison played in 50 games with 25 starts in his career at Michigan and recorded 129 career tackles and 20 sacks. Jamison will battle for a roster spot on a deep and talented defensive line. Defensive tackle Amobi Okoye was slowed by an ankle injury and didn t make the jump in his second season that he had hoped for. He finished the season with 24 tackles with 15 solo stops, one sack and a forced fumble. Now in his third season, Okoye is still the youngest player on the Texans roster. He has recorded 1.5 sacks so far this season to give him 8.0 in his career. Houston further bolstered the interior of the line by signing Shaun Cody away from Detroit as a free agent. A second-round pick by the Lions in 2005, Cody has played in 53 games with 12 starts in his first four seasons and is coming off his best season, in which he had 37 tackles, 26 solos and three passes defensed. Seventeenth-year pro Jeff Zgonina joined the team at the beginning of training camp and earned a spot

DEFENSIVE OVERVIEW on the 53-man roster by virtue of a standout training camp performance. Zgonina played in every game a year ago, starting twice, and recorded 19 tackles and a fumble recovery. Zgonina has played in 206 career games for eight teams in his career and has recorded 23.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and 13 fumble recoveries. DelJuan Robinson made his NFL debut in the 2008 season opener at Pittsburgh and got his first start in the home opener against Indianapolis. He finished the year with 27 tackles, including 19 solos, and one forced fumble. Robinson emerged as a solid contributor last year and will look to expand his role on the defense in. Second-year tackle Frank Okam will battle for increased playing time in. Okam finished his rookie season with four tackles in five games. Okam is the biggest of the Texans defensive tackles and has the size and strength to anchor the middle of the line, and he ll look to convert potential in to production in his sophomore campaign. Linebackers The Texans linebacking corps will once again be anchored by MLB DeMeco Ryans. The fourth-year star is the captain and unquestioned leader. Ryans heads into looking to bounce back from what was, for him, a disappointing 2008 campaign in which he once again led the team with 112 tackles and one sack while fighting a lingering ankle injury the entire season. He is second in the NFL with 340 solo tackles since 2006 and has registered 10 or more tackles in 20 of his 54 career games. Eighth-year veteran Kevin Bentley is penciled in as Ryans top backup in the middle. Bentley became the starting SAM linebacker after Zac Diles broke his leg. Bentley started seven of the final eight games and posted 34 tackles, one sack and one fumble recovery. He was voted a co-captain for the special teams after he led the team with 23 special teams tackles a year ago. Ryans will have a new face beside him this year in rookie Brian Cushing, Houston s first-round pick (15th overall) in last April s draft. Cushing has started every game his rookie season and leads the team with 48 tackles. He also has two forced fumbles, an interception, a safety and a half sack so far this season. One of the hottest position battles in training camp was at WLB, where Zac Diles ultimately won the starting job. Diles opened last year as the starter at SLB but saw his season cut short with a broken leg. Despite missing eight games, he still finished second on the team with 66 tackles. Second-year linebacker Xavier Adibi, a fourthround pick a year ago, started five games and had 34 tackles and a fumble recovery, earning him PFT/PFWA All-Rookie honors. Cornerbacks This offseason, Dunta Robinson became the first player in Texans history to be designated as a franchise player. Robinson signed the franchise designation on September 6 and immediately reclaimed a spot in the starting lineup. Robinson is the franchise s all-time leader with 13 career interceptions and is regarded as one of the hardest pound-for-pound hitters in the NFL. Jacques Reeves suffered a broken fibula in the first week of training camp but is expected to return near the start of the regular season. Reeves led the team in interceptions a year ago with four and returned one for a 44-yard touchdown at Minnesota. He was the only member of the secondary to start all 16 games and had 50 tackles and a team-high 19 passes defensed,

a testament to his ability to keep pace with most any receiver in the league. Rookie fourth-round draft pick Glover Quin played in 36 games with 34 starts at New Mexico and was a three-time All-Mountain West selection. He finished his career with 156 tackles, seven interceptions and a school-record 32 passes defensed. Fred Bennett played in every game last season, starting six, and finished with 41 tackles, two interceptions and two forced fumbles. Bennett has the size and strength to jam receivers at the line and also to excel in run support. DEFENSIVE OVERVIEW Veteran John Busing joined the Texans in the offseason and will vie for playing time in a crowded secondary. Busing has played in 28 career games, including eight last year in Cincinnati primarily as a special teams ace. He recorded his first career interception in the season opener vs. the New York Jets (9/13). Another rookie, Brice McCain, a sixth-round draft pick, worked extensively with the first team throughout traiing camp. McCain played in 49 games with 39 starts at Utah and was a three-time All-MWC pick. McCain helped the Utes to a perfect 13-0 record. Antwaun Molden, a third-round pick out of Eastern Kentucky in 2008, saw limited action on defense as a rookie but was a special teams demon, finishing second on the team with 19 special teams stops along with a fumble recovery. Molden broke his ankle late in the year and has worked hard throughout the offseason to prepare for training camp. He will compete for increased playing time in his second season. Bernard Pollard joined the Texans as free agent in the season s third week and made his debut in Week 4 vs. Oakland (10/4). Pollard has played in 50 career games and has five interceptions, five forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries. Second-year safety Dominique Barber played mostly on special teams as a rookie but stepped up on defense in the final two games of last season, recording three tackles, a pass defensed and his first-career sack. He scored his first career touchdown in this year s season opener on a 48-yard fumble return for touchdown. Tenth-year pro Nick Ferguson will serve as the first man off the bench at both safety spots. Ferguson played in 14 games with nine starts in his first season in Houston. Ferguson provided a physical presence in run support and finished the year with 52 tackles and a forced fumble. Safeties Veteran FS Eugene Wilson, who spent the previous five seasons with the New England Patriots, moved into the starting lineup midway through last season and is penciled in as the starter heading into camp. Wilson started 10 games and led the Texans secondary with 63 tackles while showing good ball skills with two interceptions and seven passes defensed.

DEFENSIVE NOTES DEFENSIVE SIMILARITY TO 2006 The Texans defense struggled early in the season, giving up an average of yards and 28.7 points per game through the first three weeks of the season. The 2006 Texans defense also struggled out of the gate, but managed to right the ship and play top-notch defense for the majority of the season. In 2006, Houston s defense was last in the NFL after three games, giving up an average of yards and 32.7 points per game. One of the biggest reasons for the defense s early struggles was a tendency to give up big plays. Houston surrendered four plays of 50 or more yards in the first three weeks of the season, all of which went for touchdowns. Tennessee RB Chris Johnson scored on runs of 57 and 91 yards and a 69-yard catch, and Jacksonville RB Maurice Jones-Drew scored on a 61- yard run. Cushing played outside linebacker and defensive end for the Trojans and finished his career with 178 tackles and 8.5 sacks, plus an interception, 12 passes defensed and two blocked punts. Cushing was named a starter at SLB the day he set foot on the practice field and will be looked upon to provide a physical presence in the Texans front seven. Second-round pick DE Connor Barwin (46th overall) continued the trend of versatility. Barwin was recruited to Cincinnati as a tight end and played his first three seasons there, catching 38 passes for 539 yards and four toucheowns. 41 COMMUNITY INFORMATION HOUSTON TEXANS YMCA The Houston Texans and the Greater Houston YMCA have partnered to open a new YMCA facility in the Palm Center community of Third Ward. The facility, located at the corner of Griggs Rd. and Martin Luther King Blvd., will replace the old South Central YMCA. The partnership is the first of its kind, making the new Houston Texans YMCA the first YMCA facility in the country to be named after a professional sports team. I have admired the work done by the YMCA since my childhood in North Carolina, said Texans founder and CEO Robert C. McNair. We are proud to be able to support an organization that promotes health and family values, and it gives me great pleasure to give back to a group that gave so much to me as a child. The level of commitment shown by the Houston Texans and owner Bob McNair will, for years to come, greatly improve the quality of life for so many Houstonians who chose to make this YMCA branch a part of their day. The surrounding neighborhoods will benefit. For that we are grateful, said Mayor Bill White. We are proud of the work and the joy generated by the YMCA every day. The new facility is the first and most visible result of a larger partnership between the Texans and the YMCA. In keeping with the Texans stated goal of being the most community-connected professional sports franchise in the world, the team selected the YMCA as its primary strategic community partner and will work with YMCA staff to develop programming to benefit the children and the community served by the facility. Construction of the new center is expected to begin later this year, with an anticipated opening in Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak is another YMCA alumnus. I grew up right across the street from the M.D. Anderson YMCA, Kubiak said. A lot of the things I learned in the sports world and growing up about how to be a good kid and how to be a good person really stem from my youth growing up there. LIBERTY WHITE SMOKER For the season, The Liberty White Smoker has been generously donated to the Houston Texans Foundation by Pitts and Spitts. The award winning 30X60 Model Smoker BBQ Pit is hand-designed and features a water-jet cut Houston Texans logo welded to the roll-top stainless steel lid. The smoker was autographed by the Houston Texans Football team and coaches at Training Camp, making it a truly one-of-a-kind piece. With a retail value of $26,000, not to mention the added value of the team signatures, the smoker will be an unbelievable prize for the lucky raffle ticket winner. Raffle tickets for the Liberty White Smoker are being sold for $20 each, 3 for $50, and 7 for $100 at Houston Texans home games and other Houston Texans and Houston Texans Foundation events, as well as houstontexans.com. Proceeds from the raffle ticket sales support the Houston Texans Foundation. Last year, the Houston Texans Foundation raffled off a Deep Steel Blue Smoker. Over $32,000 was raised; proceeds from the raffle ticket sales supported the Houston Texans Foundation. Houston Texans G Chester Pitts pulled the winning raffle ticket during the Fifth Quarter celebration in Budweiser Plaza on Fan Appreciation Day, presented by FS Houston.
