HEAD COACH INFORMATION GARY KUBIAK Houston Texans Head Coach : Head Coach, Houston Texans : Offensive Coordinator, Denver Broncos : Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks, Denver Broncos 1994: Quarterbacks, San Francisco 49ers : Running Backs, Texas A&M In just four seasons at the helm, Gary Kubiak has become the winningest head coach in Texans history with 24 career victories, including the two best seasons in team history. One of Kubiak s primary goals upon arriving in Houston was to create a home field advantage at Reliant Stadium, and he has made great strides in that direction. The Texans have posted a home record since 2006, including 6-2 marks in each of the last two seasons. The 2008 Texans matched their record from the year before, going 8-8 for a second straight year despite an 0-4 start in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike, which devastated much of Houston and southeast Texas. Houston became just the 10th team in NFL history to start a year 0-4 and finish at or above.500. Houston was one of 11 teams to go 8-4 or better over the last 12 games and nine of those teams were in the playoffs. The offense enjoyed its most productive season, ranking third in the NFL and setting a franchise record with 6,113 total yards. Year two for Kubiak saw the team achieve the best record in franchise history, finishing 8-8. The Texans won three of their last four and five of their last seven to finish the season at.500. Closing the season strong has become a hallmark of Kubiak s teams. In Kubiak s three seasons in Houston, the Texans are a combined 10-5 in the month of December. Another point of emphasis under Kubiak has been developing a true home field advantage, and the team is well on its way to accomplishing that mission. After going 4-4 at Reliant Stadium in 2006, which was the best home mark at the time, Kubiak s troops posted a 6-2 mark at home the past two years. Marvin Lewis Cincinnati Bengals Head Coach : Cincinnati Bengals, Head Coach 2002: Washington Redskins, Defensive Coordinator : Baltimore Ravens, Defensive Coordinator : Pittsburgh Steelers, Assistant Coach : University of Pittsburgh, Asst. Coach : New Mexico, Assistant Coach : Long Beach State, Assistant Coach : Idaho State, Assistant Coach Marvin Lewis is in his seventh season as Bengals head coach, one year from tying Paul Brown and Sam Wyche for the franchise s longest tenure of eight seasons. In Bengals head coaching victories, he also ranks third (behind Wyche and Brown). He needs nine victories to tie Paul Brown ( ) in Bengals annals and is 18 wins behind Wyche (64-68). Lewis entered the season tied for fifth in the NFL for current consecutive seasons as a head coach (seven). The only coaches with longer active streaks are Jeff Fisher (15, all with Titans/Oilers), Andy Reid (11 with Philadelphia), Bill Belichick (10 with New England) and John Fox (eight with Carolina). Sharing fifth place with Lewis is Jacksonville s Jack Del Rio. Lewis Bengals log includes an AFC North Division championship in 2005, and he coached his first five years ( ) without experiencing a losing season, the club s longest such streak since a six-year span from Lewis was named the ninth head coach in Bengals history on Jan. 14, 2003, becoming at the time the eighth African-American to become an NFL head coach. In recognition of the 8-8 Bengals being the NFL s most improved team in 2003, Lewis finished second behind Bill Belichick in Associated Press voting for NFL Coach of the Year. Lewis came to the Bengals with credentials as a record-setting NFL defensive coordinator who had earned a Super Bowl championship ring. In the 2000 regular season, Lewis Baltimore defense set the NFL record for fewest points allowed in a 16-game campaign (165) clipping 22 points off the previous mark.

TEXANS AT BENGALS GAME PREVIEW Rick Smith Houston Texans General Manager : General Manager, Houston Texans 2006: Assistant General Manager, Denver Broncos : Director of Pro Personnel, Denver Broncos : Defensive Assistant, Denver Broncos With Rick Smith at the helm of the Texans football operations, Houston has accumulated 24 wins over the four seasons since 2006, giving him the most wins for a general manager in Texans history. Houston posted 16 wins in which ranked fifth-most among AFC teams. Smith has assembled a front office staff that has the Texans pointed towards sustained success in the NFL. Smith has established himself as a prominent voice around the league in his three years at the helm of the Texans. Smith was honored with the Tank Younger Award in 2008 presented annually by the Fritz Pollard Alliance for outstanding work in an NFL front office. Smith was an original member of the General Managers Advisory Committee that provides advice and other feedback to the NFL Football Operations department on the integrity of the game, expansion of technology and other ways to improve the game, before being appointed to the NFL s prestigious eight-man Competition Committee by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. Smith has assembled a team that has closed the season by winning seven out of nine games in the month of December over the last two seasons, the fourth-most in the NFL. This offseason, the Texans acquired DE Antonio Smith from the NFC Champion The Cincinnati Bengals are 4-1 and in first place in the AFC North Division heading into Week 6 against the Texans. Last week, Cincinnati beat division rival Baltimore on a game-winning touchdown drive late in the fourth quarter to claim the division lead. Marvin Lewis is in his seventh season as Bengals head coach, one year shy of tying Paul Brown and Sam Wyche for the franchise s longest tenure at eight seasons. Lewis enters tied for fifth in the NFL for current consecutive seasons as a head coach (seven). Under Lewis, the Bengals claimed an AFC North Division championship in 2005, and he coached his first five years ( ) without experiencing a losing season. That was the club s longest such streak since a six-year span from The Bengals, however, are looking to rebound in after slipping to a 7-9 mark in 2007, and last year scrapped to only , losing their first eight games to start the season. A large amount of last season s struggles came as a result of Pro Bowl quarterback Carson Palmer only being able to start four games due to a nagging elbow injury. looks to be the turnaround year they were looking for as Palmer has thrown for 1,116 yards and

GAME INFORMATION seven touchdowns in their first five games. He has also led the team to three come-from-behind wins against Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Baltimore in their last three games, all coming with a three-point margin of victory. Palmer s best year in the league came in 2005 when he threw for 3,836 yards and 32 touchdowns and only 12 interceptions. He was selected for his first Pro Bowl that year, but was unable to play due to injury. Palmer came back to win Pro Bowl MVP honors the following year. Carson s top target is WR Chad Ochocinco, who is also regaining form after a disappointing 2008 season which saw him catch only 53 balls for 540 yards and four touchdowns, all career lows since becoming a regular starter in the league. Through Week 5, Ochocinco has 24 receptions for 352 yards and three touchdowns. WR Laveranues Coles was signed from the Jets to help the passing attack and made 10 catches for 78 yards so far this season. Second-year WR Andre Caldwell has stepped up as a solid third target for Palmer, making 18 catches for 181 yards and two scores to date. One of the biggest surprises for the Bengals has been the success of RB Cedric Benson. After Benson was cut by the Chicago Bears prior to training camp in 2008, he signed with the Bengals in late September playing in the last 12 games (10 starts) of the season. Benson had a career year, running for 747 yards and adding a career-best 185 receiving yards. Benson has picked up right where he left off with 487 yards and three touchdowns through five games. Benson has rushed for 100 or more yards twice this season and a total of seven times for his career. One of the Bengals largest weaknesses in 2008 was the strength of their offensive line, which gave up 51 sacks, third-worst in the NFL. To help address concerns with the line, Cincinnati selected the Outland Trophy winner Andre Smith out of Alabama with the sixth overall selection in the NFL Draft. Smith however, held out for just over a month and injured his foot in his first week in camp. The line has been better so far this season, only allowing Carson to be sacked 10 times through the first five games. On the defensive side of the ball, DE Antwan Odom has had a sensational start to the season, already tying his career high with eight sacks, which is tied for best in the NFL along with Denver s Elvis Dumervil. LB Keith Rivers leads the team in tackles with 29 (19 solo) for. The second-year Bengal and former USC linebacker was Cincinnati s first-round draft choice in 2008, selected ninth overall. He had a solid first five games in his rookie season before breaking his jaw against Pittsburgh and missing the rest of the season. On special teams, K Shayne Graham has struggled in his seventh season with the Bengals after spending his first two years in Buffalo and Carolina. Grahman has connected on 57.1% (4-of-7) of his field goal attempts and 90% (9-of-10) of his PATs, good for 21 points on the season. Rookie P Kevin Huber won the job out of training camp and has averaged 42.5 yards per punt through five games and has 11 punts inside the 20-yard line, which ties him for fourth most in the NFL. 11 TEAM NOTES THE LAST ORIGINAL TEXANS There are just two remaining members of the original Houston Texans team from 2002 K Kris Brown and G Chester Pitts. Brown is the franchise s all-time leading scorer with 690 points and is the only player to have appeared in every game in franchise history. Pitts had started every game in franchise history before being placed on injured reserve on September 24, ending his streak at 114. Brown was signed as a restricted free agent in 2002, while Pitts was the second of two second-round picks in the 2002 NFL Draft. THE LAST ORIGINAL TEXANS How Texans Pos. 12 OFFENSIVE OVERVIEW OFFENSIVE OVERVIEW The Texans offense came into the season intent on improving on its performance in 2008 when it turned in the most productive season in franchise history, gaining a franchise-record 6,113 yards. Houston s yardage total ranked third in the NFL last season under first-year offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan. Houston s 4,267 passing yards were also a franchise record, and the team s 1,846 rushing yards were the second-most in club history. Despite ranking third in the league in yards, the Texans were just 17th in scoring, averaging 22.9 points per game. The cause of that disparity was turnovers, and that will be a major point of focus throughout training camp. Houston is 15-2 under head coach Gary Kubiak when winning the turnover battle. Calling the signals under center once again is QB Matt Schaub. In his second year as a starter, Schaub passed for 3,043 yards and 15 touchdowns in 11 starts. It was his first career 3,000-yard season. Schaub was 6-5 as a starter last season. His overall record with the Texans is Schaub s primary receiving option will once again be WR Andre Johnson, who has established himself as arguably the best receiver in the NFL. Johnson s 1,575 receiving yards and his 115 receptions were both tops in the league in 2008, making him the first player to lead the league in both categories since On the ground, Houston will look to second-year RB Steve Slaton, who led all NFL rookies with a franchise-record 1,282 rushing yards a year ago. Slaton led the team in rushing in 15 of 16 games, and his five 100- yard games were a team single-season record. In addition to Johnson, Schaub had a number of other weapons to throw to, led by WR Kevin Walter and TE Owen Daniels. Walter tied for third in the AFC with eight touchdown catches, while Daniels was second among AFC tight ends with 862 receiving yards. Walter and Johnson formed the top receiving duo in the NFL in 2008, while Daniels and Johnson comprised the top receiver-tight end combination in the league. The key to the offense s success in 2008, however, was the offensive line. Under the leadership of T Eric Winston, who has started the last 44 games at RT, the line paved the way for a franchise-record 4.3-yard rushing average and allowed a mere 32 sacks on 555 pass attempts. OFFENSE POSITION BY POSITION Quarterbacks The Texans offense is in the highly capable hands of Matt Schaub once again in. Schaub started 11 games in his second season in Houston, throwing for 3,043 yards and leading the Texans to a 6-5 record. Schaub posted elite numbers in 2008, finishing among the league s top 10 passers in four categories. He was fourth in the NFL with passing yards per game, fourth with a 66.1 percent completion rate, eighth with a 92.7 passer rating and second with 8.01 yards per attempt. In three seasons as the Texans starter, Schaub has thrown for 6,710 yards with 34 touchdowns and 23 interceptions. Schaub has posted a quarterback rating of 91.9 since joining the team, which is by far the highest in franchise history among quarterbacks with at least 200 pass attempts. Rex Grossman comes to Houston after spending the first six years of his career in Chicago, where he guided the Bears to Super Bowl XLI in The Bears first-round pick in 2003, Grossman has thrown for 6,164 yards with 33 touchdowns and 35 interceptions in his career. Houston signed Dan Orlovsky on the opening weekend of free agency. Orlovsky started seven games in 2008 for the Detroit Lions, completing 143-of- 255 passes for 1,616 yards with eight touchdowns and eight interceptions.

OFFENSIVE OVERVIEW Running Backs Houston s rushing attack in 2008 was led by rookie Steve Slaton, who burst onto the scene with a franchise-record 1,282 rushing yards and nine touchdowns on his way to winning the rookie rushing title. Slaton led the AFC with 1,659 total yards from scrimmage. In just 19 career games, Slaton has already moved into second place on the franchise s all-time rushing list with 1,513 career rushing yards. Wide Receivers The Texans receiving corps, led by All-Pro Andre Johnson, will look to remain one of the deepest and most dangerous groups in the NFL. Johnson led the league in receptions (115) and receiving yards (1,575) a year ago and tied his own team record with eight touchdown catches. Johnson has 514 career receptions for 6,816 yards and 37 touchdowns. Since 2006, Johnson has been the most productive receiver in the NFL, averaging 87.2 yards per game. One of the team s priorities during training camp is to find a bigger back to provide a change of pace from the diminutive but speedy Slaton. Veteran Chris Brown will get the first crack at the role. After spending all of 2008 on injured reserve, Brown will look to showcase his abilities in the preseason. Brown has run for 2,818 yards and 17 touchdowns in his career. Fifth-year pro Ryan Moats backed up Slaton during the second half of the 2008 season and rushed for 94 yards on 26 carries. In five pro seasons, Moats has totaled 497 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Moats also has experience as a kick returner, averaging 21.6 yards on 13 career returns. Fullback Vonta Leach played in every game and served as a team captain several times late in the 2008 season. His primary function will again be to clear running room for Slaton and the Texans other running backs. Leach has proven to be a reliable receiver out of the backfield with 56 career receptions for 352 yards and three touchdowns. Kevin Walter will once again line up opposite Johnson. Walter enjoyed the best season of his career in 2008, catching 60 passes for 876 yards and tying Johnson for the team lead with a career-high eight touchdown catches. Walter and Johnson formed the most productive receiving duo in the NFL last year, combining for 2,474 receiving yards. David Anderson played in all 16 games last season, catching 19 passes for 241 yards and two touchdowns all career highs. Anderson entered his fourth season looking to continue expanding his role in the offense. André Davis returns as one of the preeminent deep threats in the league. Since joining the Texans in 2007, Davis has caught 49 passes for 810 yards and three touchdowns. He has nine receptions of 25 yards or longer, meaning nearly one out of every five catches results in a big gain. Third-year pro Jacoby Jones has made his mark returning punts, but will enter training camp looking to turn his tremendous athleticism into consistent playing time in the offense. In three seasons, Jones has caught 24 passes for 336 yards and two touchdowns. Veteran Glenn Martinez joined the Texans as a free agent after spending the first three years of his career with the Denver Broncos. Martinez has played in 19 games with one start and has caught 18 passes for 218 yards in his career.

OFFENSIVE OVERVIEW Tight Ends The tight end position is headlined by Pro Bowler Owen Daniels, who enters the 2008 season intent on cementing his status as one of the league s best tight ends. Daniels ranked second on the team a year ago with 70 catches, and his 862 receiving yards and two touchdowns were both third on the squad. In four seasons, he has caught 192 passes for 2,278 yards and 12 touchdowns. Joel Dreessen emerged as a terrific compliment to Daniels as a receiver in 2008 and provided valuable insurance on special teams as a reserve long snapper. Dreessen played in all 16 games a year ago and caught 11 passes for 77 yards. After re-signing with the Texans over the offseason, Dreessen has caught 25 passes for 225 yards and two scores in his four-year career.. Houston used a pair of picks in the NFL Draft on tight ends, both of whom bring different skills to the table. The Texans drafted Anthony Hill in the fourth round (122nd overall) out of North Carolina State. Hill, a Houston native, is a powerful blocker and will be looked upon to put those skills to use in the Texans running game. In the fifth round (152nd overall), Houston nabbed James Casey out of Rice. A sure-handed receiver with surprising speed, Casey has the ability to line up anywhere on the field. team, which recognizes outstanding players who fly under the radar, last season. Kasey Studdard, the team s sixth-round pick in the 2007 draft, made his first career start in Week 3 vs. Jacksonville (9/27) after G Chester Pitts was placed on the reserve/injured list. Studdard took the majority of the reps with the first team at LG in Pitts place during training camp. He saw action in two games in the 2008 season and has played in eight games with two starts in his career. Duane Brown, Houston s first-round pick in 2008, started every game in his rookie season at LT after he won the job during training camp. In his sophomore campaign, Brown will look to become more consistent. At RT, Eric Winston has started 44 consecutive games for the Texans. Winston, a third-round pick in the 2006 draft, has started every game over the last two seasons and is widely considered one of the best right tackles in the league. Fourth-year pro Rashad Butler is slated to be the primary backup at both tackle spots. Butler has played in eight career games but was inactive for all 16 contests a year ago. His strength and quickness allow him to block edge rushers on either side. Offensive Line The Texans offensive line paved the way for the most prolific offense in team history in 2008, averaging yards per game. The 32 sacks the line allowed last year were the second-fewest in franchise history, and the team s 1,846 rushing yards were second-most in team history. Fifth-year veteran Chris Myers, who joined the team via trade last year, has started the last 37 straight games, including 21 straight at center for the Texans. Myers will be the man tasked with setting the protection schemes on each play. Fifth-year veteran Chris White will serve as the primary backup at center and guard for the third consecutive year. White saw action in eight games last season after recovering from a knee injury that ended his 2007 campaign. Rookie Antoine Caldwell, the team s third-round draft pick (77th overall) out of Alabama, has the versatility to play any of the three interior line positions. He was also the only player in Alabama history to graduate in under three years, a testament to his intelligence. Mike Brisiel made the move from practice squad to the active roster late in the 2007 season and has gone on to start 25 consecutive games at RG. An alumnus of NFL Europe, Brisiel was named to USA Today s All-Joe

DEFENSIVE OVERVIEW DEFENSIVE OVERVIEW Houston s defense in will take on a new look thanks to the addition of new defensive coordinator Frank Bush. Bush was promoted from his previous post as senior defensive assistant on January 13. This season will mark Bush s first opportunity to call plays on defense. He has advocated an aggressive philosophy intent on making plays in the offensive backfield. One of the biggest keys to any successful defense is strength up front, and the Texans have the pieces in place to field one of the best defensive fronts in team history, led by the Pro Bowl tandem of DE Mario Williams and LB DeMeco Ryans. Williams will be joined by a new face on the other end of the line. DE Antonio Smith joined the Texans as a free agent after helping the Arizona Cardinals come within seconds of winning the Super Bowl last year. Third-year DT Amobi Okoye will also play a vital role in the pass rush and is looking to bounce back from a disappointing sophomore campaign. Ryans battled injuries throughout last season but still managed to lead the team in tackles yet again. He ll have more help in thanks to first-round draft pick Brian Cushing out of USC. Cushing excelled at rushing the passer in college, but also possesses the agility to drop into coverage. The projected starting lineup in the secondary features three returning starters, led by CBs Dunta Robinson and Jacques Reeves. Robinson is the franchise s all-time leader with 13 career interceptions; and Reeves had a team-high four interceptions in The secondary will look to improve upon its interception total of 12 last year, which tied for 21st in the NFL. Seventh-year FS Eugene Wilson will again call the shots in the backfield, and free agent addition SS Bernard Pollard adds a physical presence. DEFENSE POSITION BY POSITION Defensive Line A year after his team-record 14-sack season in 2007, defensive end Mario Williams anchored the Texans defensive line with 12 sacks and was named to his first Pro Bowl in Williams finished 2008 with more sacks than any other AFC defensive end. He had 55 tackles, four forced fumbles and six tackles for loss. Williams will look to further entrench himself as one of the best pass rushers in the league in his fourth season. Williams will have a new face on the opposite end of the line this season. Antonio Smith joined the Texans as a free agent after helping the Arizona Cardinals to Super Bowl XLIII. Smith notched 5.5 sacks in each of the last two years, including two in the playoffs last season. Smith has the speed to get around offensive tackles, but his size and strength will allow the coaches to move him inside in passing situations. Tim Bulman earned a spot on the 53-man roster last year and finished second on the team with a career-high four sacks among 17 total tackles. Bulman, a converted defensive tackle, has slimmed down to 275 pounds in hopes of gaining speed and quickness. Houston spent its second-round pick (46th overall) on Connor Barwin out of Cincinnati. Barwin brings tremendous athleticism and versatility to the position. He played tight end for three years before switching to defensive end as a senior, when he recorded 12 sacks and earned All-America honors. Barwin will look to give the Texans a boost in pass rush situations as a rookie. Rookie free agent Tim Jamison rounds out the depth chart at end after being signed to the active roster on October 6. Jamison played in 50 games with 25 starts in his career at Michigan and recorded 129 career tackles and 20 sacks. Jamison will battle for a roster spot on a deep and talented defensive line. Defensive tackle Amobi Okoye was slowed by an ankle injury and didn t make the jump in his second season that he had hoped for. He finished the season with 24 tackles with 15 solo stops, one sack and a forced fumble. Now in his third season, Okoye is still the youngest player on the Texans roster. He has recorded 1.5 sacks so far this season to give him 8.0 in his career. Houston further bolstered the interior of the line by signing Shaun Cody away from Detroit as a free agent. A second-round pick by the Lions in 2005, Cody has played in 53 games with 12 starts in his first four seasons and is coming off his best season, in which he had 37 tackles, 26 solos and three passes defensed.

DEFENSIVE OVERVIEW Seventeenth-year pro Jeff Zgonina joined the team at the beginning of training camp and earned a spot on the 53-man roster by virtue of a standout training camp performance. Zgonina played in every game a year ago, starting twice, and recorded 19 tackles and a fumble recovery. Zgonina has played in 205 career games for eight teams in his career and has recorded 23.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and 13 fumble recoveries. DelJuan Robinson made his NFL debut in the 2008 season opener at Pittsburgh and got his first start in the home opener against Indianapolis. He finished the year with 27 tackles, including 19 solos, and one forced fumble. Robinson emerged as a solid contributor last year and will look to expand his role on the defense in. Second-year tackle Frank Okam will battle for increased playing time in. Okam finished his rookie season with four tackles in five games. Okam is the biggest of the Texans defensive tackles and has the size and strength to anchor the middle of the line, and he ll look to convert potential in to production in his sophomore campaign. Linebackers The Texans linebacking corps will once again be anchored by MLB DeMeco Ryans. The fourth-year star is the captain and unquestioned leader. Ryans heads into looking to bounce back from what was, for him, a disappointing 2008 campaign in which he once again led the team with 112 tackles and one sack while fighting a lingering ankle injury the entire season. He leads the NFL with 329 solo tackles since 2006 and has registered 10 or more tackles in 19 of his 53 career games. Eighth-year veteran Kevin Bentley is penciled in as Ryans top backup in the middle. Bentley became the starting SAM linebacker after Zac Diles broke his leg. Bentley started seven of the final eight games and posted 34 tackles, one sack and one fumble recovery. He was voted a co-captain for the special teams after he led the team with 23 special teams tackles a year ago. Ryans will have a new face beside him this year in rookie Brian Cushing, Houston s first-round pick (15th overall) in last April s draft. Cushing is slated to start at SLB, where his size (6-2, 262) and pass rushing ability will make him a threat in the passing game. Cushing played all over the field at USC, including lining up at defensive end at times. He finished his career with 178 tackles and 8.5 sacks for the Trojans. One of the hottest position battles in training camp was at WLB, where Zac Diles ultimately won the starting job. Diles opened last year as the starter at SLB but saw his season cut short with a broken leg. Despite missing eight games, he still finished second on the team with 66 tackles. Second-year linebacker Xavier Adibi, a fourthround pick a year ago, started five games and had 34 tackles and a fumble recovery, earning him PFT/PFWA All-Rookie honors. Cornerbacks This offseason, Dunta Robinson became the first player in Texans history to be designated as a franchise player. Robinson signed the franchise designation on September 6 and immediately reclaimed a spot in the starting lineup. Robinson is the franchise s all-time leader with 13 career interceptions and is regarded as one of the hardest pound-for-pound hitters in the NFL. Jacques Reeves suffered a broken fibula in the first week of training camp but is expected to return near the start of the regular season. Reeves led the team in interceptions a year ago with four and returned one for a 44-yard touchdown at Minnesota. He was the only member of the secondary to start all 16 games and had 50 tackles and a team-high 19 passes defensed, a testament to his ability to keep pace with most any receiver in the league.

DEFENSIVE OVERVIEW Rookie fourth-round draft pick Glover Quin played in 36 games with 34 starts at New Mexico and was a three-time All-Mountain West selection. He finished his career with 156 tackles, seven interceptions and a school-record 32 passes defensed. Fred Bennett played in every game last season, starting six, and finished with 41 tackles, two interceptions and two forced fumbles. Bennett has the size and strength to jam receivers at the line and also to excel in run support. Safeties Veteran FS Eugene Wilson, who spent the previous five seasons with the New England Patriots, moved into the starting lineup midway through last season and is penciled in as the starter heading into camp. Wilson started 10 games and led the Texans secondary with 63 tackles while showing good ball skills with two interceptions and seven passes defensed. Another rookie, Brice McCain, a sixth-round draft pick, worked extensively with the first team throughout traiing camp. McCain played in 49 games with 39 starts at Utah and was a three-time All-MWC pick. McCain helped the Utes to a perfect 13-0 record. Antwaun Molden, a third-round pick out of Eastern Kentucky in 2008, saw limited action on defense as a rookie but was a special teams demon, finishing second on the team with 19 special teams stops along with a fumble recovery. Molden broke his ankle late in the year and has worked hard throughout the offseason to prepare for training camp. He will compete for increased playing time in his second season. Veteran John Busing joined the Texans in the offseason and will vie for playing time in a crowded secondary. Busing has played in 28 career games, including eight last year in Cincinnati primarily as a special teams ace. He recorded his first career interception in the season opener vs. the New York Jets (9/13). Bernard Pollard joined the Texans as free agent in the season s third week and made his debut in Week 4 vs. Oakland (10/4). Pollard has played in 50 career games and has five interceptions, five forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries. Second-year safety Dominique Barber played mostly on special teams as a rookie but stepped up on defense in the final two games of last season, recording three tackles, a pass defensed and his first-career sack. He scored his first career touchdown in this year s season opener on a 48-yard fumble return for touchdown. Tenth-year pro Nick Ferguson will serve as the first man off the bench at both safety spots. Ferguson played in 14 games with nine starts in his first season in Houston. Ferguson provided a physical presence in run support and finished the year with 52 tackles and a forced fumble.

DEFENSIVE NOTES DEFENSIVE SIMILARITY TO 2006 The Texans defense struggled early in the season, giving up an average of yards and 28.7 points per game through the first three weeks of the season. The 2006 Texans defense also struggled out of the gate, but managed to right the ship and play top-notch defense for the majority of the season. In 2006, Houston s defense was last in the NFL after three games, giving up an average of yards and 32.7 points per game. One of the biggest reasons for the defense s early struggles was a tendency to give up big plays. Houston surrendered four plays of 50 or more yards in the first three weeks of the season, all of which went for touchdowns. Tennessee RB Chris Johnson scored on runs of 57 and 91 yards and a 69-yard catch, and Jacksonville RB Maurice Jones-Drew scored on a 61- yard run. 31 DEFENSIVE PLAYER NOTES REEVES AMONG LEAGUE LEADERS CB Jacques Reeves missed the first four games of the season while recovering from a fractured fibula suffered early in training camp before making his return to the field on Sunday at Arizona (10/11). His return gave a shot in the arm to the team s pass defense as he batted away a pair of passes. Reeves four interceptions in 2008 tied him for fifth among AFC cornerbacks. His also tied for sixth among all corners with 19 passes defensed. Of the 11 corners with 19 or more passes defensed, only two allowed a lower completion percentage than Reeves. Cushing either led the team or tied for the team lead in each of his first four outings. He was the first Texans rookie to lead the team in tackles in his first two games and extended his franchise rookie record to four straight. Cushing recorded his first double-digit tackle performance in Houston s win at Tennessee (9/20) and scored the first points of his career with a safety in Houston s 29-6 Week 4 win vs. Oakland (10/4). He is one of just four rookies to rank in the league s top 100 tacklers so far this season and is one tackle shy of taking over the rookie lead. ROOKIE TACKLE LEADERS, Player, Tm G Tot Solo Asst J. Barber s touchdown was the 17th defensive score in franchise history.
