TEXANS TEXANS VS. AT SEAHAWKS BILLS HEAD COACH INFORMATION GARY KUBIAK Houston Texans Head Coach : Head Coach, Houston Texans : Offensive Coordinator, Denver Broncos : Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks, Denver Broncos 1994: Quarterbacks, San Francisco 49ers : Running Backs, Texas A&M In just four seasons at the helm, Gary Kubiak has become the winningest head coach in Texans history with 27 career victories, including the two best seasons in team history. One of Kubiak s primary goals upon arriving in Houston was to create a home field advantage at Reliant Stadium, and he has made great strides in that direction. The Texans have posted a home record since 2006, including 6-2 marks in each of the last two seasons. The 2008 Texans matched their record from the year before, going 8-8 for a second straight year despite an 0-4 start in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike, which devastated much of Houston and southeast Texas. Houston became just the 10th team in NFL history to start a year 0-4 and finish at or above.500. Houston was one of 11 teams to go 8-4 or better over the last 12 games and nine of those teams were in the playoffs. The offense enjoyed its most productive season, ranking third in the NFL and setting a franchise record with 6,113 total yards. Year two for Kubiak saw the team achieve the best record in franchise history, finishing 8-8. The Texans won three of their last four and five of their last seven to finish the season at.500. Closing the season strong has become a hallmark of Kubiak s teams. In Kubiak s three seasons in Houston, the Texans are a combined 10-5 in the month of December. Another point of emphasis under Kubiak has been developing a true home field advantage, and the team is well on its way to accomplishing that mission. After going 4-4 at Reliant Stadium in 2006, which was the best home mark at the time, Kubiak s troops posted a 6-2 mark at home the past two years. JIM MORA, JR. Smith has established himself as a prominent voice around the league in his three years at the helm of the Texans. Smith was honored with the Tank Younger Award in 2008 presented annually by the Fritz Pollard Alliance for outstanding work in an NFL front office. Smith was an original member of the General Managers Advisory Committee that provides advice and other feedback to the NFL Football Operations department on the integrity of the game, expansion of technology and other ways to improve the game, before being appointed to the NFL s prestigious eight-man Competition Committee by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. Smith has assembled a team that has closed the season by winning seven out of nine games in the month of December over the last two seasons, the fourth-most in the NFL. This offseason, the Texans acquired DE Antonio Smith from the NFC Champion The Seattle Seahawks are 5-7 and in third place in the NFC West Division heading into Week 14 against the Texans. Last week, Seattle kicked a 30-yard field goal as time expired to beat the San Francisco 49ers at Qwest Field. It was the second consecutive win for the Seahawks and their third in the last five games. The Seahawks struggled to a 4-12 record in 2008 in large part due to injuries across the board. Jim Mora is in his first year as head coach of the Seattle Seahawks after spending the past two season serving as the assistant head coach/defensive backs under previous head coach Mike Holmgren. He is the seventh head coach in Seahawks history, and brings 25 years of defensive philosophy and coaching experience to the team. Mora was the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons for three seasons, compiling a record and leading the Falcons to the NFC Championship in QB Matt Hasselbeck has been able to stay on the field much longer than in Hasselbeck has completed 208-of-340 passes on the season for 2,153 yards, 13 touchdowns and seven interceptions so far this season. He led the Seahawks to the Super Bowl

TEXANS TEXANS VS. AT SEAHAWKS BILLS GAME INFORMATION in 2005 when he threw for 3,459 yards, 24 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Hasselbeck is a three-time Pro Bowler having gone in 2003, 2005 and Backup QB Seneca Wallace started two games earlier this season when Hasselbeck was out with a broken rib Seattle gave Hasselbeck a number one receiver to throw to when the signed free-agent WR T.J. Houshmadzadeh this offseason. He has led the Seahawks in receptions with 61 on the season and is tied for the team lead with three touchdown receptions. WR Nate Burleson has fit in as a great second option, trailing Houshmadzadeh by only one reception and leading the team with 762 yards receiving and three touchdowns. TE John Carlson has also developed into an important weapon for the Seahawks. Last season, Carlson became the first rookie tight end in Seahawk history to lead the team in receptions. In, Carlson has caught 37 balls for 426 yards and three touchdowns as well. In the backfield, the Seahawks are led by RB Julius Jones. The former Cowboy has rushed for 459 yards on 127 carries and two touchdowns. RB Justin Forsett has received two starts in and has rushed the football 72 times for 394 yards (5.5 yards per carry) and four touchdowns. The Seahawks had brought in former Arizona Cardinals RB Edgerrin James at the end of training camp, but in Week 9 decided to part ways with the four-time Pro Bowler after he gained just 125 yards on 46 attempts. The Seahawks defensive unit is one of its strongest in years. Their opening day lineup of linebackers consisted of three starters all under the age of 25 that play with a physical smash mouth style of football. Unfortunately, the Seahawks lost defensive leader LB Lofa Tatupu to a season-ending injury when he tore a pectoral muscle in Week 5. In Tatupu s absence, S Jason Babineaux and LB David Hawthorne have stepped up, leading the team in tackles with 86 (64 solo) and 82 (68 solo) respectively. DE Patrick Kerney missed nine games in 2008 with a shoulder injury, but has come back to lead the Seahawks in sacks with 5.0 through 12 games. LB Aaron Curry was the fourth overall selection in the NFL Draft out of Wake Forest. During his senior season, Curry was awarded the Butkus Award, given each year to the nation s top linebacker. Curry has played well in his first NFL season, compiling 55 tackles (48 solo) and 2.0 sacks. In the secondary, CB Josh Wilson leads the team with 12 passes defensed and two interceptions. On special teams, K Olindo Mare is in his 13th NFL season and second in Seattle. Mare currently leads the team with 87 points. He has connected on 91.3% (21 of 23) of his field goals including a long of 47 yards. He has yet to attempt a field goal from 50-plus yards this season. P Jon Ryan is averaging 47.2 yards on his 66 punts this season which ranks him fourth in the NFL. TEXANS/SEAHAWKS SERIES HISTORY The Texans and Seahawks meet for the second time. The $425 million building is the first retractable roof stadium in the NFL and is also the new home of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Reliant Stadium was also host to Super Bowl XXXVIII in The roof is composed of two panels - each 240 feet long and 385 feet wide - that meet at midfield. In addition to the roof, another unique feature to the stadium is the removable grass field. The field is composed of 8-foot by 8-foot square modules that are 8 inches deep and include a metal drainage base. There are approximately 1,250 modules in the field, with each one weighing about 3,500 pounds. Here are some other facts about Reliant Stadium: The Texans also added a few more seats to Reliant Stadium for Super Bowl XXXVIII, increasing the seating capacity to 71,054. The stadium entered the 2002 season with 69,500 seats. The two video boards located behind the north and south end zones measure 96 ½ feet by 26 ½ feet and are the largest in the NFL and can display one image or six different images simultaneously. The roof weighs a total of 3,000 tons and is covered in translucent fabric. It can open in 7-10 minutes. Total size of the building 1.9 million square feet. The decision to open or close the roof is made one hour and 30 minutes prior to kickoff. If the roof is closed at kickoff, it stays closed for the remainder of the game. If the roof is open at kickoff, it is up to the official to decide whether the roof should be closed at some point during the course of the game. If the roof is open with five minutes left in the game, it must stay open for the remainder of the game. THE RULE With the roof damage suffered from Hurricane Ike early last season repaired, the Texans again have the option of playing in ideal conditions. The Texans introduced the rule in 2005 which implies that the roof will be open the when the game time temperature is projected to be between 50 and 80 degrees. The goal for implementing the Rule is to provide the most comfortable environment possible for fans to enjoy Houston Texans home games. The expected high for Sunday s matchup is in the mid-60 s at kickoff, with a 10% chance of rain meaning Reliant Stadium could possibly be open. HOUSTON S RAVING FANS The Texans have played to sellout crowds since entering the NFL. The Texans increased the Reliant Stadium capacity following the 2002 season to 71,054, incorporating more Raving Fans. Houston has sold out 78 consecutive games and looks to continue the trend in. The Texans are looking to continue their streak of selling out every preseason and regular season game in team history. Sunday s matchup against Seattle will extend the streak to 79.

OFFENSIVE OVERVIEW OFFENSIVE OVERVIEW The Texans offense came into the season intent on improving on its performance in 2008 when it turned in the most productive season in franchise history, gaining a franchise-record 6,113 yards, which ranked third in the league. This season, the offense ranks ninth with an average of yards per game, which puts it on pace to gain 5,882 yards on the year. The passing attack has been even more prolific this season, averaging yards per game, which is the third-highest total in the NFL. Despite ranking third in the league in yards last year, the Texans were just 17th in scoring, averaging 22.9 points per game. The cause of that disparity was turnovers, and that has been a major point of focus this year. This season, Houston ranks 14th in scoring, averaging 23.1 points per game. For the first time since Week 1, the Texans have a negative turnover ratio with 21 turnovers forced and 22 committed. The Texans are 17-3 under head coach Gary Kubiak when winning the turnover battle. Calling the signals under center once again is QB Matt Schaub. In his third year as a starter, Schaub has already thrown for a career-high 3,449 yards and 22 touchdowns through the first 12 games. He has topped 3,000 yards in back-to-back seasons, becoming the first Texans quarterback to do so. Schaub is 5-7 as a starter this season and overall with the Texans. Schaub s primary receiving option will once again be WR Andre Johnson, who has established himself as arguably the best receiver in the NFL. A year after becoming the first receiver to lead the league in yards and catches since 2005, Johnson ranks third in the league this season with 1,044 yards through 12 games. On the ground, Houston looks to second-year RB Steve Slaton, who led all NFL rookies with a franchiserecord 1,282 rushing yards a year ago. His 1,719 career rushing yards rank second on the Texans all-time list. In addition to Johnson, Schaub had a number of other weapons to throw to, led by WR Kevin Walter. Walter, tied for third in the AFC with eight touchdown catches last year. The key to the offense s success this year continues to be the offensive line. Under the leadership of T Eric Winston, who has started the last 51 games at RT, the line has allowed just 23 sacks on 467 pass plays, or 4.9 percent. That is the eighth-best sack percentage in the league this season. OFFENSE POSITION BY POSITION Quarterbacks The Texans offense is in the highly capable hands of Matt Schaub once again in. Schaub started 11 games in 2008, his second season in Houston, throwing for 3,043 yards and leading the Texans to a 6-5 record. Schaub has posted elite numbers in, ranking among the league s top five passers in six categories. He is third in the league completions (295) and attempts (434), fourth in passing yards (3,449), and is fifth in completion percentage (68.0) and tied for fifth with 22 touchdown passes. His 97.2 passer rating ranks seventh. In three seasons as the Texans starter, Schaub has thrown for 8,783 yards with 46 touchdowns and 31 interceptions. Schaub has posted a quarterback rating of 93.0 since joining the team, which is by far the highest in franchise history among quarterbacks with at least 200 pass attempts. Rex Grossman comes to Houston after spending the first six years of his career in Chicago, where he guided the Bears to Super Bowl XLI in The Bears first-round pick in 2003, Grossman has thrown for 6,197 yards with 33 touchdowns and 36 interceptions in his career. Grossman made his Texans debut at Jacksonville (12/6) and completed 3-of-6 passes for 33 yards with one interception in relief of Schaub. Houston signed Dan Orlovsky on the opening weekend of free agency. Orlovsky started seven games in 2008 for the Detroit Lions, completing 143-of- 255 passes for 1,616 yards with eight touchdowns and eight interceptions.

OFFENSIVE OVERVIEW Running Backs Houston s rushing attack in 2008 was led by rookie Steve Slaton, who burst onto the scene with a franchise-record 1,282 rushing yards and nine touchdowns on his way to winning the rookie rushing title. Slaton led the AFC with 1,659 total yards from scrimmage. In just 27 career games, Slaton has already moved into second place on the franchise s all-time rushing list with 1,719 career rushing yards. Wide Receivers The Texans receiving corps, led by All-Pro Andre Johnson, will look to remain one of the deepest and most dangerous groups in the NFL. Johnson led the league in receptions (115) and receiving yards (1,575) a year ago and tied his own team record with eight touchdown catches. Johnson has 556 career receptions for 7,423 yards and 39 touchdowns. Since 2006, Johnson has been the most productive receiver in the NFL, averaging 87.1 yards per game. One of the team s priorities during training camp is to find a bigger back to provide a change of pace from the diminutive but speedy Slaton. Veteran Chris Brown will get the first crack at the role. After spending all of 2008 on injured reserve, Brown has run for 3,006 yards and 19 touchdowns in his career. Fifth-year pro Ryan Moats backed up Slaton during the second half of the 2008 season and rushed for 94 yards on 26 carries. In five pro seasons, Moats has totaled 702 rushing yards and seven touchdowns. Moats also has experience as a kick returner, averaging 21.6 yards on 13 career returns. Rookie free agent Arian Foster was to the active roster (11/17) after spending the first 10 weeks on the practice squad. Foster rushed for 2,964 yards in four years at Tennessee, including 1,193 yards and 12 touchdowns as a junior in Foster led the Volunteers with 570 yards and a touchdown as a senior last year despite missing time due to injury. Fullback Vonta Leach played in every game and served as a team captain several times late in the 2008 season. His primary function will again be to clear running room for Slaton and the Texans other running backs. Leach has proven to be a reliable receiver out of the backfield with 64 career receptions for 404 yards and four touchdowns. Kevin Walter will once again line up opposite Johnson. Walter enjoyed the best season of his career in 2008, catching 60 passes for 876 yards and tying Johnson for the team lead with a career-high eight touchdown catches. Since joining the Texans in 2006, Walter has caught 184 passes for 2,360 yards and 14 touchdowns. David Anderson played in all 16 games last season, catching 19 passes for 241 yards and two touchdowns all career highs. Anderson has continued to expanding his role in the offense in his fourth season, catching 28 passes for 277 yards thus far. André Davis returns as one of the preeminent deep threats in the league. Since joining the Texans in 2007, Davis has caught 50 passes for 824 yards and three touchdowns. He has nine receptions of 25 yards or longer, meaning nearly one out of every five catches results in a big gain. Third-year pro Jacoby Jones has made his mark returning punts, but will enter training camp looking to turn his tremendous athleticism into consistent playing time in the offense. In three seasons, Jones has caught 34 passes for 495 yards and four touchdowns. Veteran Glenn Martinez joined the Texans as a free agent after spending the first three years of his career with the Denver Broncos. Martinez has played in 22 games with one start and has caught 18 passes for 218 yards in his career.

OFFENSIVE OVERVIEW Tight Ends The tight end position was dealt a tough blow with the loss of Pro Bowler Owen Daniels to a season-ending knee injury in Houston s Week 8 win at Buffalo (11/1). Daniels was on pace for a career year, with 40 catches for 519 yards and five touchdowns through eight games. In four seasons, he has caught 207 passes for 2,501 yards and 15 touchdowns. Joel Dreessen emerged as a terrific compliment to Daniels as a receiver in 2008 and will take on a bigger role in the base offense in Daniels absence. Dreessen played in all 16 games a year ago and caught 11 passes for 77 yards. After re-signing with the Texans over the offseason, Dreessen has caught 10 passes for 112 yards this year. He also handles the long-snapping duties for the team. Houston used a pair of picks in the NFL Draft on tight ends, both of whom bring different skills to the table. The Texans drafted Anthony Hill in the fourth round (122nd overall) out of North Carolina State. Hill, a Houston native, is a powerful blocker and will be looked upon to put those skills to use in the Texans running game. Hill caught his first career pass in Week 9 at Indianapolis (11/8). In the fifth round (152nd overall), Houston nabbed James Casey out of Rice. A sure-handed receiver with surprising speed, Casey has the ability to line up anywhere on the field. Casey notched his first two career receptions in Week 8 at Buffalo (11/1) and has caught six passes for 64 yards this season. seen action in 16 games with seven starts over the last two seasons. Kasey Studdard, the team s sixth-round pick in the 2007 draft, made his first career start in Week 3 vs. Jacksonville (9/27) after G Chester Pitts was placed on the reserve/injured list. Studdard took the majority of the reps with the first team at LG in Pitts place during training camp. He saw action in two games in the 2008 season and has played in 14 games with 10 starts in his career. Duane Brown, Houston s first-round pick in 2008, started every game in his rookie season at LT after he won the job during training camp. In his sophomore campaign, Brown will look to become more consistent. At RT, Eric Winston has started 51 consecutive games for the Texans. Winston, a third-round pick in the 2006 draft, has started every game over the last three seasons and is widely considered one of the best right tackles in the league. Fourth-year pro Rashad Butler is slated to be the primary backup at both tackle spots. Butler has played in eight career games but was inactive for all 16 contests a year ago. His strength and quickness allow him to block edge rushers on either side. Offensive Line The Texans offensive line has paved the way for another prolific season this year. The passing attack ranks fourth in the NFL, averaging yards per game. The line is on pace to allow just 31 sacks on the season, which would be the second-lowest total in team history. Fifth-year veteran Chris Myers, who joined the team via trade last year, has started the last 42 straight games, including 28 straight at center for the Texans. Myers will be the man tasked with setting the protection schemes on each play. Rookie Antoine Caldwell, the team s thirdround draft pick (77th overall) out of Alabama, has the versatility to play any of the three interior line positions. He was also the only player in Alabama history to graduate in under three years, a testament to his intelligence. Fifth-year veteran Chris White moved into the starting lineup in Week 6 after Mike Brisiel was placed on the reserve/injured list. White served as the primary backup at center and guard early in the season. He has

DEFENSIVE OVERVIEW DEFENSIVE OVERVIEW Houston s defense in has taken on a new look thanks to the addition of new defensive coordinator Frank Bush. Bush was promoted from his previous post as senior defensive assistant on January 13. This season marks Bush s first opportunity to call plays on defense. He has advocated an aggressive philosophy intent on making plays in the offensive backfield. One of the biggest keys to any successful defense is strength up front, and the Texans have the pieces in place to field one of the best defensive fronts in team history, led by the Pro Bowl tandem of DE Mario Williams and LB DeMeco Ryans. Williams is joined by a new face on the other end of the line. DE Antonio Smith joined the Texans as a free agent after helping the Arizona Cardinals come within seconds of winning the Super Bowl last year. Third-year DT Amobi Okoye has also played a vital role in the pass rush and has improved after a frustrating sophomore campaign. Ryans battled injuries throughout last season but still managed to lead the team in tackles yet again. He has more help in thanks to first-round draft pick Brian Cushing out of USC. Cushing has been widely praised as the best rookie defender in the NFL over the first three quarters of the season. The projected starting lineup in the secondary features three returning starters, led by CBs Dunta Robinson and Jacques Reeves. Robinson is the franchise s all-time leader with 13 career interceptions; and Reeves had a team-high four interceptions in The secondary is looking to improve upon its interception total of 12 last year, which tied for 21st in the NFL. Seventh-year FS Eugene Wilson is again calling the shots in the backfield, and free agent addition SS Bernard Pollard adds a physical presence. DEFENSE POSITION BY POSITION Defensive Line A year after his team-record 14-sack season in 2007, defensive end Mario Williams anchored the Texans defensive line with 12 sacks and was named to his first Pro Bowl in Williams finished 2008 with more sacks than any other AFC defensive end. Williams owns the franchise s all-time sack record with 36.5 in his four-year career. Williams has a new face on the opposite end of the line this season. Antonio Smith joined the Texans as a free agent after helping the Arizona Cardinals to Super Bowl XLIII. Smith notched 5.5 sacks in each of the last two years, including two in the playoffs last season. He picked up his first sack as a Texan in Houston s Week 8 win at Buffalo (11/1) and has 2.5 on the season. Tim Bulman earned a spot on the 53-man roster last year and finished second on the team with a career-high four sacks among 17 total tackles. Bulman, a converted defensive tackle, has slimmed down to 275 pounds in hopes of gaining speed and quickness. Houston spent its second-round pick (46th overall) on Connor Barwin out of Cincinnati. Barwin brings tremendous athleticism and versatility to the position. He played tight end for three years before switching to defensive end as a senior, when he recorded 12 sacks and earned All-America honors. Barwin picked up his first career sack in Week 6 at Cincinnati (10/18) and has tw2.5o on the year. Rookie free agent Tim Jamison rounds out the depth chart at end after being signed to the active roster on October 6. Jamison played in 50 games with 25 starts in his career at Michigan and recorded 129 career tackles and 20 sacks. Jamison has played in two games thus far in his rookie year. Defensive tackle Amobi Okoye was slowed by an ankle injury and didn t make the jump in his second season that he had hoped for. He finished the season with 24 tackles and 15 solo stops, one sack and a forced fumble. Now in his third season, Okoye is still the youngest player on the Texans roster. He has recorded 1.5 sacks so far this season to give him 8.0 in his career. Houston further bolstered the interior of the line by signing Shaun Cody away from Detroit as a free agent. A second-round pick by the Lions in 2005, Cody has played in 63 games with 22 starts in his career and is coming off his best season, in which he had 37 tackles, 26 solos and three passes defensed. Seventeenth-year pro Jeff Zgonina joined the team at the beginning of training camp and earned a spot on the 53-man roster by virtue of a standout train-

DEFENSIVE OVERVIEW ing camp performance. Zgonina played in every game a year ago, starting twice, and recorded 19 tackles and a fumble recovery. Zgonina has played in 215 career games for eight teams in his career and has recorded 24.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and 13 fumble recoveries. DelJuan Robinson made his NFL debut in the 2008 season opener at Pittsburgh and got his first start in the home opener against Indianapolis. He finished the year with 27 tackles, including 19 solos, and one forced fumble. Robinson emerged as a solid contributor last year and will look to expand his role on the defense in. Second-year tackle Frank Okam will battle for increased playing time in. Okam finished his rookie season with four tackles in five games. Okam is the biggest of the Texans defensive tackles and has the size and strength to anchor the middle of the line, and he ll look to convert potential in to production in his sophomore campaign. Linebackers The Texans linebacking corps will once again be anchored by MLB DeMeco Ryans. The fourth-year star is the captain and unquestioned leader. Ryans once again led the team last season with 112 tackles and one sack while fighting a lingering ankle injury the entire season. He became the franchise s all-time tackle leader in Week 7 vs. San Francisco (10/25) and now has 481 career tackles. Ryans is second in the NFL with 370 solo tackles since 2006 and has registered 10 or more tackles in 20 of his 60 career games. Eighth-year veteran Kevin Bentley is penciled in as Ryans top backup in the middle. Bentley became the starting SAM linebacker last year after Zac Diles broke his leg. Bentley started seven of the final eight games and posted 34 tackles, one sack and one fumble recovery. He was voted a co-captain for the special teams and is leading the team for the second consecutive season with 14 special teams tackles. Ryans will have a new face beside him this year in rookie Brian Cushing, Houston s first-round pick (15th overall) in last April s draft. Cushing has started every game his rookie season and is second in the AFC with 102 tackles. He also has three interceptions, two forced fumbles, a safety and 1.5 sacks so far this season. One of the hottest position battles in training camp was at WLB, where Zac Diles ultimately won the starting job. Diles opened last year as the starter at SLB but saw his season cut short with a broken leg. Despite missing eight games, he still finished second on the team with 66 tackles. Diles has 109 tackles over the past two seasons, which ranks second on the club behind Ryans. Second-year linebacker Xavier Adibi, a fourthround pick a year ago, started five games and had 34 tackles and a fumble recovery, earning him PFT/PFWA All-Rookie honors. Cornerbacks This offseason, Dunta Robinson became the first player in Texans history to be designated as a franchise player. Robinson signed the franchise designation on September 6 and immediately reclaimed a spot in the starting lineup. Robinson is the franchise s all-time leader with 13 career interceptions and is regarded as one of the hardest pound-for-pound hitters in the NFL. Rookie fourth-round draft pick Glover Quin moved into the starting lineup in Week 4 vs. Oakland (10/4) and has started the last eight games. Quin was a three-time All-Mountain West selection at New Mexico, where he finished his career with 156 tackles, seven interceptions and a school-record 32 passes defensed.

DEFENSIVE OVERVIEW Jacques Reeves suffered a broken fibula in the first week of training camp which sidelined him for the first two games of the year, but he has played his way back into shape. Reeves led the team in interceptions a year ago with four and returned one for a 44-yard touchdown at Minnesota. He was the only member of the secondary to start all 16 games and had 50 tackles and a team-high 19 passes defensed, a testament to his ability to keep pace with most any receiver in the league. Fred Bennett played in every game last season, starting six, and finished with 41 tackles, two interceptions and two forced fumbles. Bennett has the size and strength to jam receivers at the line and also to excel in run support. Another rookie, Brice McCain, a sixth-round draft pick, worked extensively with the first team throughout traiing camp. McCain played in 49 games with 39 starts at Utah and was a three-time All-MWC pick, helping the Utes to a perfect 13-0 record. McCain picked up his first career interception in Week 12 vs. Indianapolis (11/29). Rookie free agent Mark Parson played in 48 games at Ohio and registered 150 career tackles and five interceptions. As a senior last year, he finished the season with 45 tackles, two interceptions and one forced fumble. Parson went through training camp with the Texans and spent the early part of the season on the practice squad for the New Orleans Saints. Safeties Veteran John Busing joined the Texans in the offseason and moved into the starting lineup full-time in Week 12 vs. Indianapolis (11/29) after Eugene Wilson was placed on injured reserve. Busing has played in 39 career games with three starts, all of which have come this season. He recorded his first career interception in the season opener vs. the New York Jets (9/13). Second-year safety Dominique Barber played mostly on special teams as a rookie but stepped up on defense in the final two games of last season, recording three tackles, a pass defensed and his first-career sack. He scored his first career touchdown in this year s season opener on a 48-yard fumble return for touchdown. Bernard Pollard joined the Texans as free agent in the season s third week and made his debut in Week 4 vs. Oakland (10/4). Pollard has played in 57 career games and has seven interceptions, five forced fumbles and five fumble recoveries. He notched a careerhigh two interceptions in Week 9 at Indianapolis (11/8). Tenth-year pro Nick Ferguson will serve as the first man off the bench at both safety spots. Ferguson played in 14 games with nine starts in his first season in Houston. Ferguson provided a physical presence in run support and finished the year with 52 tackles and a forced fumble. Houston signed ninth-year veteran safety Brian Russell in Week 12 (11/25) after losing starting FS Eugene Wilson for the year. Russell has played 117 games with 95 starts for four teams during his career, totaling 441 tackles, 16 interceptions, two forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and three sacks. He played in nine games this season for Jacksonville before being released (11/21).

DEFENSIVE NOTES DRAMATIC TURNAROUND The Texans defense struggled early this season, giving up an average of yards and 28.7 points per game through the first three weeks of the season. The defense has improved more than any group in the league, giving up yards per game less in the last nine games than it did in the first three. Overall, the defense has improved by nearly 140 yards per game since Pollard joined the starting lineup. 35 DRAFT CLASS NOTES DRAFT CLASS RECAP Versatility was the name of the game for the Texans in the NFL Draft. Five of Houston s seven draft picks played more than one position during their college careers, led by first-round draft pick (15th overall) LB Brian Cushing out of USC. Cushing played outside linebacker and defensive end for the Trojans and finished his career with 178 tackles and 8.5 sacks, plus an interception, 12 passes defensed and two blocked punts. Cushing was named a starter at SLB the day he set foot on the practice field and will be looked upon to provide a physical presence in the Texans front seven. Second-round pick DE Connor Barwin (46th overall) continued the trend of versatility. Barwin was recruited to Cincinnati as a tight end and played his first three seasons there, catching 38 passes for 539 yards and four toucheowns. Barwin was switched to defensive end before his senior season and earned All- American honors there after recording 53 tackles and 12 sacks. Barwin also played as a walk-on forward for the Bearcats basketball team. C Antoine Caldwell, the Texans third-round pick (77th overall), played four of the five offensive line positions in his career at Alabama. Caldwell started 48 games for the Crimson Tide, including 34 at C, 12 at LG, one at RG and one at RT. He allowed just one sack in his final 23 games. Caldwell was also the only player in Crimson Tide history to graduate in under three years, earning his degree in Human Environmental Sciences. Hill s size (6-5, 265) allows him to excel as a blocker in addition to his pass-catching ability. After drafting Hill, the Texans picked up another tight end in the fifth round (152nd overall) in Rice TE James Casey, who was among the most versatile players in the entire draft class. A former minorleague baseball player, Casey was recruited to Rice as a linebacker but eventually played seven different positions in one game as a freshman. Casey primarily played tight end and caught 157 passes for 1,914 yards and 17 touchdowns in his two-year career. He also played quarterback, all three receiver positions and returned punts. The sixth round (188th overall) yielded CB Brice McCain out of Utah. McCain was a three-year starter and three-time All-Mountain West choice as a defensive back and kick returner. He finished his career with 103 career tackles and 21 passes defensed for the Utes to go along with 37 career kick returns for 846 yards. 39 COMMUNITY INFORMATION HOUSTON TEXANS YMCA The Houston Texans and the Greater Houston YMCA have partnered to open a new YMCA facility in the Palm Center community of Third Ward. The facility, located at the corner of Griggs Rd. and Martin Luther King Blvd., will replace the old South Central YMCA. The partnership is the first of its kind, making the new Houston Texans YMCA the first YMCA facility in the country to be named after a professional sports team. I have admired the work done by the YMCA since my childhood in North Carolina, said Texans founder and CEO Robert C. McNair. We are proud to be able to support an organization that promotes health and family values, and it gives me great pleasure to give back to a group that gave so much to me as a child. The level of commitment shown by the Houston Texans and owner Bob McNair will, for years to come, greatly improve the quality of life for so many Houstonians who chose to make this YMCA branch a part of their day. The surrounding neighborhoods will benefit. For that we are grateful, said Mayor Bill White. We are proud of the work and the joy generated by the YMCA every day. The new facility is the first and most visible result of a larger partnership between the Texans and the YMCA. In keeping with the Texans stated goal of being the most community-connected professional sports franchise in the world, the team selected the YMCA as its primary strategic community partner and will work with YMCA staff to develop programming to benefit the children and the community served by the facility. Construction of the new center is expected to begin later this year, with an anticipated opening in Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak is another YMCA alumnus. I grew up right across the street from the M.D. Anderson YMCA, Kubiak said. A lot of the things I learned in the sports world and growing up about how to be a good kid and how to be a good person really stem from my youth growing up there. LIBERTY WHITE SMOKER For the season, The Liberty White Smoker has been generously donated to the Houston Texans Foundation by Pitts and Spitts. The award winning 30X60 Model Smoker BBQ Pit is hand-designed and features a water-jet cut Houston Texans logo welded to the roll-top stainless steel lid. The smoker was autographed by the Houston Texans Football team and coaches at Training Camp, making it a truly one-of-a-kind piece. With a retail value of $26,000, not to mention the added value of the team signatures, the smoker will be an unbelievable prize for the lucky raffle ticket winner. Raffle tickets for the Liberty White Smoker are being sold for $20 each, 3 for $50, and 7 for $100 at Houston Texans home games and other Houston Texans and Houston Texans Foundation events, as well as houstontexans.com. Proceeds from the raffle ticket sales support the Houston Texans Foundation. Last year, the Houston Texans Foundation raffled off a Deep Steel Blue Smoker. Over $32,000 was raised; proceeds from the raffle ticket sales supported the Houston Texans Foundation. Houston Texans G Chester Pitts pulled the winning raffle ticket during the Fifth Quarter celebration in Budweiser Plaza on Fan Appreciation Day, presented by FS Houston.
