6 TEXANS SEASON-IN-REVIEW TEAM NOTES A PERFECT ENDING The Texans headed into the regular season finale against New England (1/3/10) still in the thick of the playoff hunt. To have any hope of advancing to the postseason, Houston needed to first beat the Patriots. A look at head coach Gary Kubiak s record in season finales indicated that a win was in the cards. Kubiak is 4-0 in season finales since taking over in The Texans opponent the last two years has had either a playoff spot or playoff seeding on the line heading into the last game of the season. TEXANS HEAT UP IN DECEMBER Houston finished the season at 9-7, setting a franchise record for most wins in a season. With a 5-7 mark through 12 games, a winning record looked doubtful, but the Texans closed with four straight victories to clinch the franchise s first winning record. 7 TEXANS SEASON-IN-REVIEW TEAM NOTES OUT-RUSHING TO JUDGEMENT Ever since he was hired in 2006, head coach Gary Kubiak has stressed the importance of having a strong running game, and the evidence on the field has proven that philosophy to be true throughout his tenure. The Texans have outrushed their opponents 32 times under Kubiak, and they are 24-8 in those games. Houston outrushed its opponents 10 times this season and was 7-3 in those games. 8 TEXANS SEASON-IN-REVIEW TEAM NOTES MOVING THE CHAINS Houston s offense ranked fourth in the NFL this season, averaging yards per game, and one reason for that success was the ability to keep drives alive by gaining first downs. 11 TEXANS SEASON-IN-REVIEW TEAM NOTES DRAMATIC TURNAROUND The Texans defense struggled early this season, giving up an average of yards and 28.7 points per game through the first three weeks of the season. The defense has improved more than any group in the league, giving up fewer yards per game in the last 12 games than it did in the first three. Houston s defense went from allowing a leagueworst yards per game in the first three to just in the last 13, ranking fourth in the NFL. One of the biggest reasons for the defense s early struggles was a tendency to give up big plays. Houston surrendered four plays of 50 or more yards in the first three weeks of the season, all of which went for touchdowns. Tennessee RB Chris Johnson scored on runs of 57 and 91 yards and a 69-yard catch, and Jacksonville RB Maurice Jones-Drew scored on a 61- yard run. 13 TEXANS SEASON-IN-REVIEW OFFENSIVE OVERVIEW OFFENSIVE OVERVIEW For the third consecutive season, the Texans set a franchise record for total offense. Houston s offense gained 6,129 yards, an average of per game, to rank fourth in the NFL. Those numbers bested the totals from 2008 when the Texans ranked third in the league with 6,113 total yards. Houston cracked the league s top 10 in scoring offense for the first time in, averaging a franchiserecord 24.3 points per game. The offense was paced by the league s most prolific passing attack. The Texans gained a league-best yards per game through the air this season. QB Matt Schaub had one of the best seasons in NFL history, passing for a league-high 4,770 yards with 29 touchdowns and 15 interceptions, giving him a passer rating of His 4,770 passing yards were the sixth-most in NFL history. Schaub started all 16 games for the first time in his career and guided the Texans to a franchise-best 9-7 record. He improved his record as the Texans starter to Schaub s primary receiving option once again was WR Andre Johnson, who solidified his place as arguably the best receiver in the NFL. Johnson finished with 101 catches for an NFL-best 1,569 yards and a career-high nine touchdowns. He became just the second receiver in NFL history to post back-to-back 1,500- yard seasons and was also the second receiver to lead the league in receiving yards in consecutive seasons. Schaub had a bevy of options at his disposal in addition to Johnson. WR Kevin Walter caught 53 passes for 611 yards and two touchdowns and David Anderson had a career year with 38 receptions for 370 yards. That duo helped pick up the slack when Pro Bowl TE Owen Daniels went down for the year with a knee injury in Week 8. Daniels was putting together an All-Pro caliber year with 40 catches for 519 yards and five touchdowns through eight games. While the passing attack flourished, the ground game struggled for most of the season, ranking 30th in the NFL with an average of 92.2 yards per game. Second-year RB Steve Slaton led the team with 437 yards despite missing the final five games. Rookie Arian Foster showed promise late in the year, gaining 216 yards in the final two games of the season. The key to the offense s success continued to be the offensive line. Under the leadership of RT Eric Winston, who has started the last 54 games, the line allowed just 25 sacks on 608 pass plays, or 4.1 percent. That was the fifth-best sack percentage in the league this season. OFFENSE POSITION BY POSITION Quarterbacks The Texans offense was in the highly capable hands of Matt Schaub once again in. For the first time in his career, Schaub started all 16 games and the results spoke for themselves. Schaub posted elite numbers in, ranking among the league s top five passers in six categories. His 4,770 passing yards not only led the league, it was also the sixth-best passing total in NFL history. Schaub also led the league in attempts (583) and completions (396). His 67.9 completion percentage was fourth in the league, and he ranked fifth in yards per attempt (8.18) and passing touchdowns (29). His 98.6 passer rating ranked seventh. Schaub was the starting quarterback for the AFC in the 2010 Pro Bowl and earned Most Valuable Player honors after setting the Pro Bowl record with a passer rating of 151.3, throwing for 189 yards and two touchdowns. In three seasons as the Texans starter, Schaub has thrown for 10,054 yards with 53 touchdowns and 34 interceptions. Schaub has posted a quarterback rating of 94.2 since joining the team, which is by far the highest in franchise history among quarterbacks with at least 200 pass attempts. Rex Grossman came to Houston after spending the first six years of his career in Chicago, where he guided the Bears to Super Bowl XLI in The Bears first-round pick in 2003, Grossman has thrown for 6,197 yards with 33 touchdowns and 36 interceptions in his career. Grossman completed 3-of-6 passes for 33 yards with one interception in one appearance this season. Houston signed Dan Orlovsky on the opening weekend of free agency. Orlovsky started seven games in 2008 for the Detroit Lions, completing 143-of- 255 passes for 1,616 yards with eight touchdowns and eight interceptions.

14 TEXANS SEASON-IN-REVIEW OFFENSIVE OVERVIEW Running Backs For the second straight year, the ground game was paced by RB Steve Slaton, although the Texans didn t put up the same type of numbers as the 2008 edition. Despite missing the year s last five games with a shoulder injury, Slaton led the team with 437 rushing yards. Fifth-year pro Ryan Moats was second on the team with 390 rushing yards on 101 attempts and had a team-best four rushing touchdowns. He has totaled 831 rushing yards and eight touchdowns in his career. Moats also has experience as a kick returner, averaging 21.6 yards on 13 career returns. Veteran Chris Brown pitched in with 267 yards and three touchdowns after spending all of 2008 on injured reserve. Brown has totaled 3,024 yards and 19 touchdowns in his career. Rookie free agent Arian Foster was signed to the active roster on November 17 after spending the first 10 weeks on the practice squad and finished fourth on the squad with 257 yards. Foster received his first NFL carry in Week 13 vs. Seattle (12/13) and finished that game with 13 rushes for 34 yards and four catches for 54 yards. The rookie had back-to-back standout performances to close the season, rushing for 99 yards and a touchdown at Miami (12/27) and following that up with a 119-yard, two-touchdown performance in the season finale vs. New England (1/3). Houston signed Chris Henry to the practice squad on October 7 and promoted him to the active roster on December 9. Henry, a former second-round pick of the Tennessee Titans, has played in 10 games in his career and has gained 122 yards on 32 carries with two touchdowns in his career. Fullback Vonta Leach has played in every game - 59 of them - since joining the Texans mid-way through the 2006 season and has developed a reputation as one of the best blocking backs in the NFL. His primary function is to clear running room for the Texans tailbacks. Leach has proven to be a reliable receiver out of the backfield with 68 career receptions for 446 yards and four touchdowns. Wide Receivers The Texans receiving corps, led by All-Pro Andre Johnson, continues to be one of the deepest and most dangerous groups in the NFL. Johnson led the league in receiving yards for the second consecutive year with 1,569 and he caught a career-high nine touchdown passes. Johnson has 587 career receptions for 7,948 yards and 42 touchdowns. Since 2006, Johnson has been the most productive receiver in the NFL, averaging 90.2 yards per game. Kevin Walter started opposite Johnson for the third straight year. Walter followed up a career year in 2008 by catching 53 passes for 611 yards and two touchdowns. Since joining the Texans in 2006, Walter has caught 195 passes for 2,470 yards and 15 touchdowns. David Anderson turned in the best season of his young career in. The fourth-year receiver out of Colorado State caught 38 passes for 370 yards, both career highs. Since being picked in the seventh round in 2006, Anderson has caught 70 passes for 769 yards and three touchdowns. Third-year pro Jacoby Jones made significant strides toward turning his tremendous athleticism into consistent playing time in the offense this season. Jones caught a career-high 27 passes for 437 yards and finished second on the team with six touchdown catches. In three seasons, Jones has caught 45 passes for 667 yards and six touchdowns. André Davis saw his playing time on offense decline in, due in part to the emergence of Jones, but he remained one of the most important members of the special teams unit. Davis caught six passes for 59 yards on the year. Since joining the Texans in 2007, Davis has caught 52 passes for 855 yards and three touchdowns. Veteran Glenn Martinez joined the Texans as a free agent after spending the first three years of his career with the Denver Broncos. Martinez has played in

15 TEXANS SEASON-IN-REVIEW OFFENSIVE OVERVIEW 26 games with one start and has caught 18 passes for 218 yards in his career. Tight Ends The tight end position was dealt a tough blow with the loss of Pro Bowler Owen Daniels to a season-ending knee injury in Houston s Week 8 win at Buffalo (11/1). Daniels was on pace for a career year, with 40 catches for 519 yards and five touchdowns through eight games. In four seasons, he has caught 207 passes for 2,501 yards and 15 touchdowns. Joel Dreessen emerged as a viable receiving threat in his own right in Daniels absence. Dreessen played in all 16 games for the second straight season and caught 26 passes for 320 yards and a touchdown. Since joining the Texans in 2007, Dreessen has caught 41 passes for 452 yards and three touchdowns. In the fifth round (152nd overall) of the NFL Draft, Houston nabbed James Casey out of Rice. A sure-handed receiver with surprising speed, Casey has the ability to line up anywhere on the field. Casey caught six passes for 64 yards in his rookie year. Another rookie, Anthony Hill, caught one pass while serving as the team s primary blocking tight end. A fourth-round pick (122nd overall) in the NFL Draft, Hill saw his rookie year cut short when he was placed on injured reserve with a left knee injury on December 15. Offensive Line The Texans offensive line has paved the way for the most prolific season in franchise history. The passing attack led the league, averaging yards per game. The line allowed just 25 sacks on the season, which was the second-lowest total in team history. Fifth-year veteran Chris Myers, who joined the team via trade last year, has started 46 straight games, including 32 straight at center for the Texans. Myers was the man tasked with setting the protection schemes on each play. Rookie Antoine Caldwell, the team s third-round draft pick (77th overall) out of Alabama, has the versatility to play any of the three interior line positions. Caldwell made his first career start at RG in Week 13 vs. Seattle (12/13) and ended the year having played in 10 games with three starts at RG. injury to his left foot. Kasey Studdard, the team s sixth-round pick in the 2007 draft, made his first career start in Week 3 vs. Jacksonville (9/27) after Pitts was placed on the reserve/injured list and started the remaining 14 games. He has played in 18 games with 14 starts in his career. Fifth-year veteran Chris White moved into the starting lineup in Week 6 after Brisiel was placed on the reserve/injured list. White served as the primary backup at center and guard early in the season. He has seen action in 20 games with eight starts over the last two seasons. Duane Brown, Houston s first-round pick in 2008, started every game of his career at LT. After splitting reps as a rookie, Brown played nearly every offensive snap in, missing only a few series in the second half at St. Louis (12/20) in Week 15. At RT, Eric Winston has started 55 consecutive games for the Texans. Winston, a third-round pick in the 2006 draft, has started every game over the last three seasons and is widely considered one of the best right tackles in the league. Fourth-year pro Rashad Butler was the primary backup at both tackle spots. Butler has played in nine career games and played most of the second half in Week 15 at St. Louis (12/20) after Brown injured his knee. His strength and quickness allow him to block edge rushers on either side. 12th-year veteran Ephraim Salaam rejoined the team in Week 16 after spending most of the season with Detroit. Salaam was thrust into the starting lineup in Week 3 of 2006 and fought through a variety of injuries to hold down the spot for the next 30 games. After going through the entire 2008 seasons with the same starting line in all 16 games, the Texans lost both starting guards early in the season. LG Chester Pitts, who had started every game in franchise history, was lost for the year in Week 2 at Tennessee (9/20) with a right knee injury. Three weeks later at Arizona (10/11), RG Mike Brisiel was lost for the year with an

25 TEXANS SEASON-IN-REVIEW DEFENSIVE OVERVIEW DEFENSIVE OVERVIEW Houston s defense in took on a new look thanks to the addition of new defensive coordinator Frank Bush. Bush was promoted from his previous post as senior defensive assistant on January 13. This season marked Bush s first opportunity to call plays on defense and the results were generally positive. After a rough start in the first three games, the Texans defense made a tremendous turnaround. From Week 4 onward, Houston ranked fourth in the league in total defense and ninth in scoring defense. One of the biggest keys to any successful defense is a strong group of leaders, and the Texans defense is in great hands with co-captains LB DeMeco Ryans and DE Mario Williams. The Pro Bowl duo were the first two draft picks by head coach Gary Kubiak and have been the heart and soul of the defense from Day One. Ryans is the franchise s all-time leading tackler with 518 career stops and Williams owns the franchise career sack record with Williams was joined by a new face on the other end of the line this season. DE Antonio Smith joined the Texans as a free agent after helping the Arizona Cardinals come within seconds of winning the Super Bowl XLIII. Smith tied for second on the team with 4.5 sacks on the season. On the inside, the combination of third-year DT Amobi Okoye and free agent DT Shaun Cody helped the Texans tie for 10th in rushing defense and second against the run after Week 4. Ryans had an additional duty in on top of merely calling the defense: he had to teach a rookie linebacker the nuances of the game and Brian Cushing, the team s first-round draft pick, was a model student. Cushing led the team with 133 tackles and had four sacks, four interceptions and two forced fumbles. His play earned him a slew of honors, including AP Defensive Rookie of the Year, second-team AP All-Pro, a spot in the Pro Bowl, two AFC Defensive Player of the Week awards and two NFL Defensive Rookie of the Month honors. The secondary was led by a pair of hard-hitting veterans. CB Dunta Robinson, the franchise s all-time leader with 13 career interceptions, matched up with the opponent s best receiver every week and only allowed one 100-yard receiver - Cincinnati WR Chad Ochocinco. SS Bernard Pollard added a physical presence on the back end after signing with the Texans on September 24. Pollard tied for the team lead with four interceptions and scored two touchdowns - one on a fumble recovery and another on a 70-yard interception return. DEFENSE POSITION BY POSITION Defensive Line Leading the way on the defensive line once again was DE Mario Williams, who earned his second consecutive trip to the Pro Bowl in. Williams finished the year with 9.0 sacks, 13 tackles for loss, 20 quarterback hits, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. Williams is the franchise s career sack leader with Williams had more help than ever when it came to rushing the passer this season. Antonio Smith joined the Texans as a free agent after helping the Arizona Cardinals to Super Bowl XLIII. A physical end who often slid inside on passing downs, Smith tied for second on the team with 4.5 sacks, which was the secondhighest total of his career. Houston spent its second-round pick (46th overall) on Connor Barwin out of Cincinnati. Barwin brings tremendous speed and athleticism to the position. He picked up his first career sack in Week 6 at Cincinnati (10/18) and ended the year tied with Smith for second on the team with 4.5. His 4.5 sacks were the secondmost by a rookie in team history. Tim Bulman earned a spot on the 53-man roster in 2008 and finished second on the team with a careerhigh four sacks among 17 total tackles. His season didn t include the same sack numbers, but Bulman set a career high with 18 tackles and made his second career start when he opened Houston s Week 2 game at Tennessee (9/20). Rookie free agent Tim Jamison rounded out the depth chart at end after being signed to the active roster on October 6. Jamison saw action in six games and was inactive for five others, finishing the season with two tackles. Defensive tackle Amobi Okoye bounced back from a disappointing second season and became a more consistent contributor in his third year. He started all 16 games for the first time in his career and set a career high with 38 tackles, including 26 solo stops. He recorded 1.5 sacks this season to give him 8.0 in his career. Okoye was still the youngest player on the Texans roster in. Houston bolstered the interior of the line by signing Shaun Cody away from Detroit as a free agent. A second-round pick by the Lions in 2005, Cody has played in 67 games with 25 starts in his career and recorded 21 tackles, including 12 solo stops, and 0.5 sacks in his first season as a Texan. Jeff Zgonina, a 17-year pro, joined the team at the beginning of training camp and earned a spot on the 53-man roster by virtue of a standout preseason performance. Zgonina played in every game for the

26 TEXANS SEASON-IN-REVIEW DEFENSIVE OVERVIEW third consecutive season and finished with 28 tackles and 2.5 sacks, his highest sack total since Zgonina has played in 219 career games for eight teams in his career and has recorded 25.0 sacks, three forced fumbles and 13 fumble recoveries. DelJuan Robinson made his NFL debut in the 2008 season opener at Pittsburgh and got his first start in the 2008 home opener against Indianapolis. He finished that year with 27 tackles, including 19 solos, and one forced fumble. In his second full season on the active roster, Robinson saw action in 11 games and registered four tackles, including three solos. Second-year tackle Frank Okam saw action in three games in his sophomore campaign. The biggest of the Texans defensive linemen, Okam spent the majority of the year working on the scout team defense imitating the opposition s best interior lineman. teams this season and led the team for the second consecutive season with 20 special teams tackles. The biggest addition to the defense this season was rookie Brian Cushing, Houston s first-round pick (15th overall) in last April s draft. Cushing started every game his rookie season and led the team and finished second in the AFC with 133 tackles. He also has four interceptions, two forced fumbles, a safety and 4.0 sacks this season. His outstanding play landed him a slew of awards and honors, including AP Defensive Rookie of the Year, PFWA Rookie of the Year, second-team AP All-Pro and a spot in the Pro Bowl. He was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week and NFL Defensive Rookie of the Month twice each. Linebackers The Texans linebacking corps was anchored once again by MLB DeMeco Ryans. The fourth-year star is the captain and unquestioned leader of the defense, and he earned his second trip to the Pro Bowl this year. Ryans finished second on the team with 123 total tackles, and his 93 solo stops led the team. In Week 15 at St. Louis (12/20), he became the first player in franchise history to record 500 career tackles. Ryans leads in the NFL with 403 solo tackles since 2006 and has registered 10 or more tackles in 22 of his 64 career games. One of the hottest position battles in training camp was at WLB, where Zac Diles rebounded from a broken leg that ended his 2008 campaign after eight games and won the starting job in camp. Diles continued to be one of the most consistently productive players on the Texans defense, playing in all 16 games for the first time in his career and finishing with 61 tackles, including 45 solo stops, and seven tackles for loss. Second-year linebacker Xavier Adibi, a fourthround pick in 2008, started five games and had 34 tackles and a fumble recovery, earning him PFT/PFWA All-Rookie honors. In his sophomore campaign, Adibi played in all 16 games in a reserve role and finished with three total tackles. He was also a strong contributor on special teams, adding eight tackles and a forced fumble. Eighth-year veteran Kevin Bentley once again worked as Ryans top backup in the middle. The versatile Bentley became the starting SAM linebacker in 2008 after Zac Diles broke his leg and started seven of the final eight games. He was voted a co-captain for the special

27 TEXANS SEASON-IN-REVIEW DEFENSIVE OVERVIEW Cornerbacks Last offseason, Dunta Robinson became the first player in Texans history to be designated as a franchise player. Robinson signed the franchise designation on September 6 and immediately reclaimed a spot in the starting lineup. In a change from the past, when he defended on one side of the field, Robinson this year followed the opponent s best receiver whereever he lined up. Despite facing many of the league s best receivers, Robinson only allowed one player to surpass 100 yards on him. Rookie fourth-round draft pick Glover Quin moved into the starting lineup in Week 4 vs. Oakland (10/4) and started 12 games this season. Quin finished fourth on the team with 64 tackles and had a team-high 11 passes defensed in his rookie campaign. Jacques Reeves suffered a broken fibula in the first week of training camp which sidelined him for the first two games of the year, but he quickly played his way back into shape. Reeves intercepted one pass this season and finished the season with 28 tackles and seven passes defensed while playing primarily as the nickel back. Fred Bennett played in 10 games this season with three starts and finished the year with 15 tackles and one pass defensed. In his career, Bennett has played in 40 games with 17 starts and has intercepted five passes, forced four fumbles and recovered one. Another rookie, Brice McCain, a sixth-round draft pick, played a vital role in the team s pass defense. McCain played in all 16 games with two starts and had 11 solo tackles and three passes defensed. He picked up his first career interception in Week 12 vs. Indianapolis (11/29). Rookie free agent Mark Parson was signed to the active roster on November 26 and was inactive for the final six games of the year. Parson went through training camp with the Texans and spent the first two weeks of the season on the practice squad before joining the New Orleans Saints practice squad and eventually returning to Houston. Safeties Veteran FS Eugene Wilson, who started 10 games in 2008, came into training camp as the presumptive starter once again, but injuries put a damper on his second year in Houston. A knee injury suffered in a preseason game kept Wilson off the field for the season opener. Wilson returned to the field in Week 2 and played in eight of the next nine games before a foot injury ended his season early. Wilson finished the season with 29 tackles and two interceptions. Second-year safety Dominique Barber took advantage of the opportunity when Wilson went down and started a career-high four games before seeing his season cut one game short due to a hamstring injury. Barber finished the year with 25 tackles, four passes defensed and one interception. He also scored his first career touchdown in this year s season opener on a 48-yard fumble return for touchdown. Veteran John Busing joined the Texans in the offseason and saw action in every game this season with four starts. Busing registered 20 tackles and three passes defensed on the year. He recorded his first career interception in the season opener vs. the New York Jets (9/13) and returned it 14 yards before fumbling. Barber scooped up the loose ball and carried it in for a touchdown. Busing has played in 43 career games with four starts. Bernard Pollard joined the Texans as free agent in the season s third week and made his debut in Week 4 vs. Oakland (10/4). Pollard finished third on the team with a career-high 102 tackles and tied for the team lead with four interceptions to go along with 1.5 sacks. He notched a career-high two interceptions in Week 9 at Indianapolis (11/8) and scored his second career touchdown in Week 13 vs. Seattle (12/13) on a 70-yard interception return for touchdown. Ten-year veteran Nick Ferguson has the ability to play both safety spots. Ferguson played in 10 games with one start this season, finishing with three tackles and a pass defensed to go along with seven special teams tackles.

35 TEXANS SEASON-IN-REVIEW DRAFT CLASS NOTES DRAFT CLASS RECAP Versatility was the name of the game for the Texans in the NFL Draft. Five of Houston s seven draft picks played more than one position during their college careers, led by first-round draft pick (15th overall) LB Brian Cushing out of USC. Cushing played outside linebacker and defensive end for the Trojans and finished his career with 178 tackles and 8.5 sacks, plus an interception, 12 passes defensed and two blocked punts. Cushing was named a starter at SLB the day he set foot on the practice field and will be looked upon to provide a physical presence in the Texans front seven. Second-round pick DE Connor Barwin (46th overall) continued the trend of versatility. Barwin was recruited to Cincinnati as a tight end and played his first three seasons there, catching 38 passes for 539 yards and four toucheowns. Barwin was switched to defensive end before his senior season and earned All- American honors there after recording 53 tackles and 12 sacks. Barwin also played as a walk-on forward for the Bearcats basketball team. C Antoine Caldwell, the Texans third-round pick (77th overall), played four of the five offensive line positions in his career at Alabama. After drafting Hill, the Texans picked up another tight end in the fifth round (152nd overall) in Rice TE James Casey, who was among the most versatile players in the entire draft class. 39 TEXANS SEASON-IN-REVIEW COMMUNITY INFORMATION HOUSTON TEXANS YMCA The Houston Texans and the Greater Houston YMCA have partnered to open a new YMCA facility in the Palm Center community of Third Ward. The facility, located at the corner of Griggs Rd. and Martin Luther King Blvd., will replace the old South Central YMCA. The partnership is the first of its kind, making the new Houston Texans YMCA the first YMCA facility in the country to be named after a professional sports team. I have admired the work done by the YMCA since my childhood in North Carolina, said Texans founder and CEO Robert C. McNair. We are proud to be able to support an organization that promotes health and family values, and it gives me great pleasure to give back to a group that gave so much to me as a child. The level of commitment shown by the Houston Texans and owner Bob McNair will, for years to come, greatly improve the quality of life for so many Houstonians who chose to make this YMCA branch a part of their day. The surrounding neighborhoods will benefit. For that we are grateful, said Mayor Bill White. We are proud of the work and the joy generated by the YMCA every day. The new facility is the first and most visible result of a larger partnership between the Texans and the YMCA. In keeping with the Texans stated goal of being the most community-connected professional sports franchise in the world, the team selected the YMCA as its primary strategic community partner and will work with YMCA staff to develop programming to benefit the children and the community served by the facility. Construction of the new center is expected to begin later this year, with an anticipated opening in Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak is another YMCA alumnus. I grew up right across the street from the M.D. Anderson YMCA, Kubiak said. A lot of the things I learned in the sports world and growing up about how to be a good kid and how to be a good person really stem from my youth growing up there. 41 TEXANS 7, JETS 24 RELIANT STADIUM - 9/13-70,118 In one of the most anticipated Week 1 matchups in the NFL, the Texans learned that they have a lot to work on in a lopsided 24-7 loss to the New York Jets. The Jets cruised by the Texans behind 462 total yards of offense, including 190 rushing yards. On the other side of the ball, Rex Ryan made his head coaching debut and witnessed his defense hold the Texans offense scoreless and limit them to 183 yards of offense. Texans quarterback Matt Schaub was pressured most of the afternoon and appeared to be slowed by his left ankle injury. He finished with 166 yards on 18-of-33 passing with an interception. On the ground, running back Steve Slaton had only 17 yards on nine attempts. In one of the few times that the Texans offense drove inside New York territory, Slaton was tackled and fumbled at the 15-yard line at the end of a slashing 18-yard reception. The Jets recovered the ball to quiet the 70,118 fans in attendance. The Jets scored first at the end of the first quarter when Jay Feely capped a 16-play, 68-yard drive with a 24-yard field goal. Jets running back Leon Washington gained 12 yards on first-and-15 on New York s next drive, but the play was followed by two Mark Sanchez incompletions and a punt. On third-and-three from the 27, Sanchez was leveled before throwing by linebacker Xavier Adibi, who came up the middle untouched on a blitz. Slaton s fumble occurred on the next series, when he was hit by cornerback Donald Strickland. Defensive end Mike Devito recovered the ball and ran seven yards to the New York 22. The Jets then extended their lead to 10-0 with a 30-yard touchdown pass from Sanchez to wide receiver Chandi Stuckey, who was wide open in the middle of the end zone on a busted coverage by the Texans secondary. The score capped a 10-play, 78-yard drive that ended with about three minutes left to play in the first half. With 5:18 left in the third quarter, the Texans appeared to generate some momentum. Tight end Owen Daniels caught a 27-yard pass to the Houston 41. On third-and-nine, Schaub found Andre Johnson open for seven yards. Coach Gary Kubiak left the offense on the field for fourth-and-two, and Schaub s pass intended for Daniels was broken up by safety Eric Smith to give the Jets offense possession at the Houston 49. The Texans scored their only points on a fumble return for a touchdown with 12:18 remaining in the contest. Safety John Busing picked off Sanchez s pass and returned it 15 yards before he was tackled and fumbled. Safety Dominique Barber recovered the loose ball and scored on a 48-yard return. Kris Brown s extra point made it Houston held the momentum only briefly. Sanchez converted another third down on a 40-yard pass to tight end Dustin Keller to the Houston 33. After a five-yard illegal substitution penalty, Jones scored on a 38-yard run off the right guard. 1Q 2Q 3Q 4Q OT Final NEW YORK JETS HOUSTON TEXANS JETS JETS JETS TEXANS JETS Feely 24-yd. field goal Stuckey 30-yd. pass from Sanchez (Feely kick) T Jones 1 yd. run (Feely kick) Barber 48-yd. fumble recovery (Brown kick) Jones 38-yd. run (Feely kick) TEXANS JETS First Downs Total Net Yards Net Yards Rushing Net Yards Passing (Att/Comp/Int) Punts-Average Fumbles-Lost Sacks-Yards Penalties-Yards Time of Possession 21:14 38:46 RUSHING: TEXANS- Slaton 9-17; Brown 3-15; Schaub 1-6, JETS- Jones , 2 TD; Washington 10-60; Smith 1-15; Sanchez 5-6; Richardson 1-2 PASSING: TEXANS- Schaub 18-33, 166 yards, INT. 42 TEXANS 34, TITANS 31 TeX S LP FIELD - 9/20-69,143 In a game of big plays, the one that sealed victory for the Texans was both bizarre and anti-climactic. It was a fitting end to one of the most chaotic games in Texans history. Quarterback Matt Schaub threw for 357 yards and a career-high four touchdowns to lead the Texans back from a 21-7 second-quarter deficit. Two of those touchdowns went to All-Pro receiver Andre Johnson, who caught 10 passes for 149 yards. The deciding score was Kris Brown s 23-yard field goal with 2:55 left in the game. The Texans overcame a monstrous day from Titans running back Chris Johnson, who had 197 rushing yards on only 16 carries along with 87 receiving yards. He scored three touchdowns, on runs of 91 and 57 yards and a 69-yard catch. Before Brown s 23-yard field goal that provided the winning margin, the Texans tied the game at 31 late in the third quarter on a one-yard touchdown catch by tight end Owen Daniels. Tennessee had taken a lead when Chris Johnson broke loose for a 91-yard touchdown run earlier in the quarter. It was a repeat of what Johnson did in the first quarter, when the Titans needed only nine plays to score their first 14 points thanks to their speedy running back. On Tennessee s first possession, Johnson ran 57 yards on third-and-19 for his first touchdown run. Andre Johnson s one-handed 19-yard touchdown catch tied the game at seven in the first quarter. Schaub was a perfect four-of-four on third down on the 14-play, 77-yard scoring drive, completing passes to Johnson, Daniels and Anderson. On the ensuing drive, Chris Johnson scored again, this time on a 69-yard reception. The Texans didn t put a man on him at the line of scrimmage, and nobody covered him as he ran up the left sideline and caught Collins pass en route to an easy score. Later Collins connected with receiver Nate Washington to make the score 21-7 in the second quarter. The Texans wasted no time in beginning their comeback, making it on the very next play from scrimmage with Schaub s 72-yard touchdown pass to Johnson. A few plays later, free safety Eugene Wilson intercepted Collins at the 42-yard line and returned the ball to the Tennessee 29. Schaub then found Jones for a game-tying 29-yard touchdown pass. With 10:29 left to play, the Texans turned back the Titans on fourth-and-six from the Houston 33-yard line. The defense also forced a three-and-out on the Titans next possession, giving Houston the ball at its own 32 with 7:10 left in the game. Schaub then marched the Texans 63 yards in nine plays, the biggest a 44-yard pass to Jones on the first play of the drive, to lead to Brown s deciding field goal. Schaub converted a two-yard quarterback sneak on fourth-and-inches from the Titans 15-yard line that kept alive the game-winning drive. 1Q 2Q 3Q 4Q OT Final HOUSTON TEXANS TENNESSEE TITANS Titans Johnson 57 yd. run (Bironas kick) Texans Johnson 19 yd. pass from Schaub (Brown kick) Titans Johnson 69 yd. pass from Collins (Bironas kick) Titans Washington 8 yd. pass from Collins (R.Bironas kick) Texans Johnson 72 yd. pass from Schaub (K.Brown kick) Texans Jones 29 yd. pass from Schaub (Brown kick) Texans Brown 38 yd. 43 TEXANS 24, JAGUARS 31 RELIANT STADIUM - 9/27-70,083 The Texans were in familiar territory Sunday battling an AFC South rival in a back-and-forth contest. Coach Gary Kubiak even told the players at halftime, when the Texans led 21-17, that they were in the same game as a week ago at Tennessee. The difference though, was that the Texans committed the critical fourth quarter mistake instead of their opponent. With 2:10 left in the Texans loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, running back Chris Brown rushed off the right tackle on the one-yard line before fumbling into the end zone. The Jaguars recovered the ball and maintained possession once officials upheld the fumble ruling on the field. Prior to Brown s fumble, which officials upheld after review, wide receiver Kevin Walter was penalized on a controversial pass interference call that negated tight end Joel Dreessen s touchdown catch. Coming off his four touchdown passes at Tennessee, quarterback Matt Schaub had a productive day against the Jaguars aside from an interception on the opening drive. He completed 26-of-35 attempts for 300 yards with three touchdowns. In his regular season debut, Walter had a game-high seven catches for 96 yards and a touchdown. Trailing 3-0 in the first quarter after Josh Scobee s 52-yard field goal, Schaub connected with wide receiver Jacoby Jones on an 18-yard touchdown that helped make the score 7-3. Jacksonville regained the lead on David Garrard s two-yard touchdown run. Prior to the play, Kubiak challenged a 15-yard touchdown catch by Ernest Wilford, who stepped out of bounds prior to crossing the goal line. With 5:33 left before halftime, Schaub found Walter open for a nine-yard touchdown, which was followed less than a minute later by Maurice Jones-Drew s 61-yard score. The rapid fire offense continued on the ensuing possession, when Schaub connected with Steve Slaton, Andre Johnson and Owen Daniels for 41 yards. On third-and-goal, Schaub found Daniels open in the end zone to help make the score 21-17, Texans, at halftime. To begin the second half, the Jaguars marched 83 yards on 10 plays. The Jaguars took a lead on Jones- Drew s one-yard touchdown run. The Texans evened the score thanks to Brown s 27-yard field goal, but the Jaguars answered with a touchdown drive courtesy of Jones-Drew s eight-yard run, which gave the visitors a lead early in the fourth quarter. While the Jaguars carried all the momentum in the fourth quarter, cornerback Dunta Robinson revitalized the crowd by forcing a fumble on wide receiver Mike Sims-Walker. Linebacker Zac Diles recovered the fumble at the Houston 49. Schaub marched the offense down to the one-yard line before Brown s fumble squashed the Texans comeback hopes. 1Q 2Q 3Q 4Q OT Final JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS HOUSTON TEXANS Jaguars J.Scobee 52 yd. 44 TEXANS 29, RAIDERS 6 RELIANT STADIUM - 10/4-70,291 The Texans won their first home game of the season by a 29-6 margin over the Oakland Raiders. It was the most complete performance of the season by the Texans defense, which limited the visitors to 165 net yards of offense, including only 45 on the ground, and two third down conversions on 15 attempts. It was a gutsy performance by the defense, which had three new starters in safeties Dominique Barber and Bernard Pollard and cornerback Glover Quin. Barber replaced free safety Eugene Wilson, who was sidelined with flu-like symptoms. In the first quarter, WR Andre Johnson had a big 62-yard gain set up K Kris Brown for a 26-yard field goal to give Houston an early 3-0 lead. On the Raiders second possession, defensive tackle Amobi Okoye sacked quarterback JaMarcus Russell for a five-yard loss on second down. Linebacker DeMeco Ryans then stopped running back Michael Bush for a oneyard loss on third-and-long to force Oakland s second punt. Oakland s offense returned to the field less than a minute later after Texans RB Steve Slaton fumble was recovered by Matt Shaugnessy. Sebastian Janikowski s 46-yard field goal capped a five-play, 15-yard scoring drive. Texans QB Matt Schaub completed another long pass on the next series, connecting with Kevin Walter for 41 yards to the Oakland 24. Four plays later, Brown s 34-yard field goal gave the Texans a 6-3 lead early in the second quarter. The Texans extended their lead when Slaton rushed in for a 32-yard touchdown on a delayed handoff. On the drive, Slaton and running back Ryan Moats totaled 67 yards on five carries on the drive. A career-long 44-yard catch by tight end Owen Daniels to the Oakland 17 set up Slaton s second touchdown of the game on an 18-yard screen pass. Slaton lined up wide left and followed blocks by Johnson, Duane Brown and Kasey Studdard into the end zone. Raiders first-round pick Darrius Heyward-Bey responded with an 18-yard catch and 20-yard end around to move Oakland into Houston territory. On fourth-and-nine at the 35-yard line, Russell completed a 19-yard pass to rookie wide receiver Louis Murphy. Four plays later, Janikowski booted a 33-yard field goal that made the score 20-6 with 2:05 left before halftime. With 10:29 remaining in the third quarter, the Texans collected their first takeaway on a fumble recovery by defensive end Antonio Smith. Ryans tackled Bush and forced the fumble at the Oakland 41. Four plays later, Matt Turk s punt was downed at the one-yard line by André Davis. On the first play, LB Brian Cushing shot through a gap to wrestle down RB Justin Fargas in the end zone to make the score 22-6 with 8:53 left in the third quarter. On the ensuing kick return, Jacoby Jones sprinted through the middle of Oakland s coverage team to score on a 95-yard touchdown. Defensive end Mario Williams forced the Raiders second turnover with 10:15 left in the game when he sacked Russell at the Oakland 20 and ripped the ball away. Rookie defensive end Connor Barwin recovered for no gain to maintain the Texans 23-point lead. 1Q 2Q 3Q 4Q OT Final OAKLAND RAIDERS HOUSTON TEXANS Texans K.Brown 26 yd.
