The two teams were Western Division foes from , meeting twicea-year during that span. When the NFL split into two conferences with two division in each conference, the Rams shifted to Western Conference s Coastal Division while the Bears were in the Conference s Central Division, ending the twice-a-year meetings. The Bears built their series lead by stringing eight consecutive wins three different times ( , , ) in the 71-year rivalry. The Bears have won the last three meetings, snapping a four-game winning streak by the Rams over Chicago, their longest in the history of the series. The rivalry between the teams has also extended into the postseason as each franchise has claimed a conference championship against the other. The Rams beat Chicago (24-14) in 195 for the conference championship after losing twice to the Bears in the regular season. Chicago shut out the Los Angeles Rams (24-) in the 1985 NFC Championship game for a berth in Super Bowl XX. 4 LAST REGULAR SEASON GAME vs. ST. LOUIS Chicago 17, Rams 9 Sunday, December 6, Soldier Field CHICAGO - The Chicago Bears defense didn t allow a touchdown and the offense kept the ball on the ground after building a 1- fi rst-quarter lead in a 17-9 victory over the St. Louis Rams at Soldier Field. Defensively, the Bears generated three sacks, two takeaways and permitted the Rams to convert just 2-of-14 third-down opportunities, 1-of-7 in both halves. RB Steven Jackson rushed for 112 yards on 28 carries, but St. Louis reached the red zone only once on 13 possessions. The Bears scored fi rst as Matt Forté made up for a lost fumble on the game s second play from scrimmage with a one-yard touchdown run, making it 7- with 9:43 left in the fi rst quarter. The fi ve-play, 85-yard drive was highlighted by QB Jay Cutler s 48-yard pass to WR Devin Hester to the St. Louis 37. Two plays later, Johnny Knox drew a 35-yard pass interference penalty against CB Quincy Butler, resulting in a fi rst down at the 2. On the Bears next possession, WR Earl Bennett turned a medium-range pass on thirdand-eight into a 71-yard gain to the St. Louis 2, setting up K Robbie Gould s 27-yard fi eld goal, which made the score 1-. Late in the third quarter Cutler connected on a three-yard touchdown pass to Bennett on third-and-goal to increase the Bears lead to Forté rushed for 91 yards on 24 carries, including 42 yards on seven attempts in the fourth quarter, while Kahlil Bell added 35 yards on 11 carries. With the Bears relying primarily on their running game, Cutler completed 8 of 17 passes for 143 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions to compile a 96. passer rating. The only points the Bears surrendered were generated by Rams K Josh Brown, who hit fi eld goals of 2, 48 and 5 yards without a miss. His fi rst kick late in the fi rst half came after DE Alex Brown broke up a screen pass to Jackson on third-and-goal from the 2. The Bears had a chance to extend a 1- lead midway through the second quarter. CB Zackary Bowman stripped WR Brandon Gibson after a seven-yard reception and S Al Afalava caught the loose ball in the air and returned it 43 yards to the St. Louis 16. The drive stalled and the Bears attempted a fake fi eld goal when holder Brad Maynard tossed a shuffl e pass to Greg Olsen, who was dragged down at the 1, four yards short of a fi rst down. Chicago s second takeaway came much later when LB Hunter Hillenmeyer intercepted a Kyle Boller pass at the Chicago 4 with 3:29 remaining in the fourth quarter. Needing a touchdown and two-point conversion to tie, the Rams got the ball back at their own 22 with 1:5 to play. They reached the Chicago 41 with 34 second to go, but turned the ball over on downs as Boller threw three straight incomplete passes after killing the clock with a fi rst-down spike. Boller fi nished the game 17 of 32 passing for 113 yards with an interception to compile a 48. passer rating. He was sacked by DE Adewale Ogunleye, DT Israel Idonije and DT Anthony Adams in the contest. BOX SCORE Bears 17, Rams 9 Soldier Field (61,892) Sunday, December 6, 29 ST. LOUIS CHICAGO BEARS M.
