5 5 WAC PRE-SEASON NEWS AND NOTES WAC TOURNAMENT RETURNS TO LAS VEGAS The 2013 WAC Men s and Women s Basketball Tournament will be held March at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas and will include all ten WAC teams. Ticket information and tournament format will be available soon at WAC WELCOMES FIVE NEW HOOPS TEAMS TO LEAGUE The WAC welcomes Denver, Seattle U, UT Arlington, UTSA and Texas State to the league this season. The five new teams join Idaho, Louisiana Tech, New Mexico State, San Jose State and Utah State to create a 10-team WAC basketball league. The WAC had an eight-team league last season. ESPN TO TELEVISE 11 WAC BASKETBALL GAMES The WAC has announced its basketball television schedule, a slate that includes 11 WAC games to be televised on ESPN networks. In all, four games will be shown on ESPNU and five on ESPN Regional Television (ERT). ERT games will be made available to the markets of the partici- pating teams. In addition, the WAC Tournament men s and women s championship games will be shown on ESPNU. Additionally, games determined by ESPN s BracketBuster could increase the number of WAC games aired on ESPN Networks. ESPN SEARS BRACKETBUSTERS For the 11th year in a row, the WAC has partnered with ESPN and several other top college bas- ketball conferences for ESPN Sears BracketBusters, a weekend men s basketball event matching potential NCAA tournament hopefuls against each other. Six WAC teams will be a part of this year s pool of teams. 8 8 Scott Cross Head Coach UT Arlington coach Scott Cross spent the fi rst six years of his career as a head coach by generating a long list of school records, fi rsts and accomplishments. Known as a tireless worker, excellent recruiter and great ambassador for his program, Cross is poised to lead the men s basketball program to even greater heights. Cross led his alma mater into a new era, as the Mavericks moved into the state-of-the-art College Park Center. UT Arlington also began a new chapter in its history on July 1, 2012 when the program moved from the Southland Conference into the Western Athletic Conference. During his fi rst six seasons, Cross guided the Mavericks to an appearance in both the NCAA and NIT Tournaments, won a SLC Tournament Championship in 2008, and, most recently, won the regular season Southland Conference Championship, while recording his 100th win this season. Coach Cross was named 2012 Southland Conference Coach of the, 2012 NABC District 23 Coach of the and a 2012 Finalist for the Hugh Durham National Coach of the year. During the 2011 off season, Cross and the Mavericks played in an exhibition tour in British Columbia, Canada. The trip proved to be a tremendous confi dence boost for the team, which went undefeated at 5-0 and won by an average of 45 points per game. After the successful exhibition tour, Coach Cross and the Mavericks enjoyed a record-setting season, posting a 24-9 record. The Mavericks had the seventh-longest win streak in the country in , winning 16 games in a row to break the previous school record of nine. The Mavericks reached their highest RPI rating in school history and fi nished the season ranked 21st in the collegeinsider.com Mid-Major Top 25. LaMarcus Reed earned fi rst-team All-Conference honors. Cross led the Mavericks to the 2008 NCAA Tournament, marking the fi rst time in school history the Mavericks made an appearance in the Big Dance. The Mavericks came away with their conference title after defeating Northwestern State in the fi nals to punch their ticket. He led the 2008 NCAA Tournament team to a then-school record 21 victories, which also included the best start in school history at 8-0. During the season the Mavericks were ranked for the fi rst time in the collegeinsider.com Mid-Major Top 25. UTA received its highest ranking of the season at No. 14 in December of From the end of the 2007 season throughout the 2008 season, Cross led the Mavericks to a school-record 17 consecutive home wins at Texas Hall. A three-year letter winner at UT Arlington from , Cross gained the reputation as both a fi erce competitor on the court and a scholar-athlete off the fl oor. As a player, Cross appeared in 82 games for UTA, including 58 in the starting lineup. As a senior, Cross averaged 11.9 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game, while converting a team-high 41.5 percent of his 3-point shots, second best in the Southland Conference. In the classroom, Cross set the standard for UT Arlington basketball. He was a two-time GTE/College Sports Information Directors of America Basketball Academic All-American, earning third team as a junior and second team honors as a senior. Cross graduated with a perfect 4.0 grade point average in marketing. Cross is married to the former Jennifer Harris, who played volleyball for the Mavericks from The couple resides in Arlington and has three sons: Austin, Cody and Tyler.

9 UT ARLINGTON VOLLEYBALL 9 Greg Young Associate Head Coach Greg Young joined the UT Arlington men s basketball staff as an assistant coach in Young came to UT Arlington from Jacksonville College in Jacksonville, Texas where he spent four years as the head coach of the Jaguars. He also served as the school s athletic director. He led his team to a record in which was one of the best seasons in school history. The Jaguars spent the majority of the season in the NJCAA national rankings and Young was honored following the campaign as the Region XIV Coach of the. schools. Young has an overall record of in 10 seasons as a junior college head coach. He has also had 55 players sign with four-year institutions, including 26 with Division I Young went to Jacksonville College from Texas State where he served for fi ve years as the Bobcats recruiting coordinator. During his tenure the Bobcats played in the Southland Conference Tournament each season. He signed eight Top 100 players, according to Texas Hoops, during those fi ve seasons. The Bobcats fi nished the season with the third most victories in school history as a Division I program. Prior to his tenure at Texas State, Young was the head coach at Hill College for two seasons. He led the Rebels to consecutive Region V Tournament appearances and in led the team to the regional tournament championship game. That was the fi rst time the school had reached the fi nals since From Young was the head coach at Lamar (Colo.) Community College. Young turned the Lopes into a Region VIX contender in his four years there, twice reaching the Region VIX tournament quarterfi nals. Young was the assistant coach at Eastern New Mexico from He helped lead the Greyhounds to the Lone Star Conference title in 1992 and an appearance in the NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen in the school s fi rst-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. Young also spent time as an assistant coach at Cleburne (Tex.) High School during the season and as an assistant at Texas Wesleyan from A native of Cleburne, Tex., Young was a three-sport athlete at Cleburne High School, lettering in football, basketball and baseball. He then went on to play basketball at Howard Payne University where he was a four-year basketball letterman. He was named a captain his senior season and received the distinguished Paul J. Cunningham Award for excellence and dedication his senior year. Young graduated from Howard Payne in 1986 with a bachelor s degree in physical education. He later earned his master s in education from Texas Wesleyan in Young and his wife Nicole have one daughter (Regan).

10 Zak Buncik Assistant Coach 10 Zak Buncik joined the UT Arlington men s basketball staff as an assistant coach in A native of Fort Worth, Buncik has worked more than 20 basketball camps from , including camps at Texas and Stanford. Buncik has also spent time working at the U.S. Elite camp, the NBA D-League Pre-Draft camp and the prestigious Howie Garfi nkel Five-Star camp. His basketball expertise also includes working as a personal skill developer for high school and college athletes. Some of Buncik s former pupils include former UT Arlington guard Rod Epps, Bennie Rhodes of SMU, Donuald Bell of Prairie View A&M and Alexandra Collyer of the University of Toronto. He also spent time learning from the Nike Skill Development Director, Ganon Baker, and from Steph Wood, who is the Director of Basketball Operations/Lead Trainer for Ganon Baker Basketball Services. Buncik also spent four years on the sidelines coaching, including stops at River Oaks Castleberry ( ), Arlington Sam Houston ( , ) and UT Arlington as a student assistant in He completed his bachelor s degree in kinesiology with an emphasis in pedagogy from UT Arlington in He is also a certifi ed physical education teacher. Andrae Patterson Assistant Coach Andrae Patterson joined the UT Arlington men s basketball staff as an assistant coach in 2012 after serving two years as director of operations. Patterson came to UT Arlington after retiring from a success professional career. He was drafted in the second round of the 1998 NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves with the 46th overall selection. He played in 40 career regular season games with Minnesota over the next two seasons. Following his NBA career, Patterson played for nine seasons in the top European Leagues. His teams in Europe included KK Zadar (Croatia), Ricoh Manresa (Spain), Ironi Ashkelon (Isreal), Panellinios BC (Greece), and most notably Adecco Estudiantes (Spain), before joining Egaleo AO (Greece) in 2007 where he fi nished his playing career. He played collegiately at Indiana for Hall of Fame coach Bob Knight. During his All-American career at IU, Patterson led the Hoosiers to four NCAA Tournament appearances. He was a four-time All-Big Ten selection and represented the United States at the World U-22 Championships in A native of Abilene, Texas, Patterson was a standout prep player at Cooper High School. As a senior, Patterson averaged more than 27 points and 14 rebounds per game. In its fi rst 30 years of athletics, Cooper had captured one district basketball championship. Patterson led the Cougars to titles as a sophomore and senior. He was a three-time district MVP and, as a senior, was named the state s top player and a Parade All-American. Andrae and his wife Kiana live in Colleyville with his daughters Jayden and Kimora.

11 Pat Rafferty Director of Basketball Operations 11 Pat Rafferty joined UT Arlington men s basketball staff in 2012 as Director of Operations. Before coming to UT Arlington, Rafferty was head coach at Grayson College for nine seasons. He has also been an assistant coach at Louisville University under legendary coach Denny Crum. Rafferty also spent two seasons as a scout for the Minnesota Timberwolves of the NBA. Rafferty has compiled an overall record of as a head coach on the junior college level, winning three conference championships and one regional championship. Montana College. His teams have made one appearance in the NJCAA National Tournament (fi nishing sixth), and he has coached seven NJCAA All-Americans. Rafferty is a graduate of Buffalo High School (WY), Northwest Community College (WY) and Eastern

Started 31 of 32 contests on the year, sitting to begin only the home fi nale in favor of senior Bradley Gay. Scored in double fi gures 19 times and has four double-digit rebounding efforts. Led the team in scoring on four occasions and registered two double-doubles. Scored double fi gures in fi ve straight games from Jan. 4 through Jan Transfered from TCU to UTA and sat out as a transfer student As a sophomore in 2010 he appeared in 32 games and started 20 for TCU. Averaged 5.3 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. Rebounding total was second on the team but led team in offensive rebounds with 76. Best game of the season came against nationally-ranked Clemson where he posted 9 points, including 2-of-2 from behind the 3-point arc, to go along with 6 steals, 4 rebounds and 2 assists in 28 minutes. Those 6 steals were the most in a game by any Mountain West player that season. Ranked second on the team in steals (28) and third in rebounds (99) and rebounds per game (3.2). Ranked sixth among all Mountain West Conference freshmen in rebounds per game (3.2). High School Played at Duncanville High School program that was nationally-recognized by USA Today. Ranked 16th in Texas according to TexasHoops.com in the Class of Concluded his senior campaign by averaging 13.6 points, 7.9 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game en route to securing Texas All-State honors. Guided a Panthers program that fi nished with a 36-2 overall record, including a 14-0 conference record, during his senior campaign. Garnered Most Valuable Player honors at the 2007 Texas 5A State Championships after guiding his prep program to a victory in the gold medal game. Served as a valuable member of a Duncanville High School program that fi nished with a 39-0 record, including a seventhplace showing in the USA Today fi nal poll. Led a team that was preseason ranked fi rst in the nation according to Rivals.com as well as the FAB-50 for preseason rankings according to NJ.com. Aided a Duncanville program that was ranked fourth in the nation and the only team in the State of Texas to be listed on ESPN s Elite High School Boys Basketball Team.
