This year s game, the 105th meeting between the Dawgs and Cougs, will kick off Friday, Nov. 23, at 12:30 p.m. and will air live to a national audience on FOX television. The Huskies enter the game on a four-game winning streak, a stretch that includes a pair of road wins, at Cal and at Colorado. Washington is receiving votes in both polls and enter the week two spots out of the AP Top 25 and four spots out in the coaches poll. The UW is No. 25 in the BCS rankings. The Huskies are already bowl-eligible, but will presumably have to wait until the following weekend, after the various conference champion games have been played, to find out where they ll be heading. QUICK SNAPS: In its current four-game winning streak, the Huskies have out-scored their opponents 113 to 48, or an average of about a win over WSU would mean that the UW s regular-season win total would have gone up for a fourth straight year (5-7 in 2009, 6-6 in 2010, 7-5 in 2011, 8-4 in 2012)... sophomore TB Bishop Sankey notched the UW s fourth straight 1,000-yard season, passing that benchmark in the win over Utah... Sankey is the 11th different Husky to rush for 1,000 yards and his 1,150 yards are ninth-most in UW single-season history... Sankey s 13 rushing TDS this season are tied for fifth-most in UW history... only a true sophomore, Austin Seferian-Jenkins already has 99 career receptions for 1,289 yards and 11 touchdowns, all school records... additionally, Seferian-Jenkins 58 receptions this year are a school record for the position and are tied for most in the nation among TEs... Seferian-Jenkins, who played on the UW basketball team as a freshman, also saw action at defensive end in the Huskies last two games... the Huskies currently rank No. 9 in the nation (second in the Pac-12) in pass defense with just yards allowed per game (Arizona leads at )... Washington had seven true freshmen see action in the season-opener: P Korey Durkee, LS Ryan Masel, WR Jaydon Mickens, WR Kendyl Taylor, S Shaq Thompson, DE Pio Vatuvei and TB Erich Wilson II... two more true freshmen made their debut vs. Portland State: WR Marvin Hall and OG Shane Brostek, who started vs. Stanford... Cory Littleton became the 10th Husky freshman to play when he started at Oregon... a total of 16 players made their UW debut vs. San Diego State while five more players made their collegiate debut in the game at LSU... against Portland State, an additional 10 players got on the field for the first time and one more did so at Oregon, meaning that 32 Huskies have played in their first UW games this season. TELEVISION: The Washington-Washington State game will air live to a national audience on FOX television with Craig Bolerjack (play by play), Joel Klatt (color) and Petros Padapakis (sidelines) providing the commentary. 2 THE HEAD COACH: In a frequently-told tale, Husky football coach Steve Sarkisian recalls his days as a young assistant traveling to face Washington at Husky Stadium. During the drive across Lake Washington, with the iconic home of the Dawgs towering ahead, Sarkisian marveled aloud at the city, the stadium and the atmosphere surrounding the UW program. A decade or so later, Sarkisian is in charge of the Washington football program he was admiring that day. And in just two years, he has re-established the kind of tough, exciting environment that was then, and is again now, so closely associated with the Husky football. The 2011 season, Sarkisian s third as head coach, provided more highlights for his up-andcoming program. The Husky offense posted one of its most prolific seasons ever, scoring 434 points over the course of the season, the most by a UW squad since the 1991 national championship team and the second-most in school history. The Huskies scored nearly 12 more points per game than they did the previous year. They also had marked improvement in passing yards (65 more yards per game) and total offense (47 more yards per game), while the team s third-down percentage improved vastly over the previous season, from 32 to 46 percent. Sarkisian coached his team to a third straight win over Washington State in the annual Apple Cup to remain undefeated against the UW s in-state rival and to wrap up a 7-5 regular-season record and 5-4 mark in the Pac-12 North. The Huskies secured a berth in the Valero Alamo Bowl, the No. 2 game in the Pac-12 bowl lineup. In 2010, Sarkisian s second season in Seattle, the Huskies made another clear step forward. The Dawgs went 7-6 overall and finished third in the Pac-10 Conference with a 5-4 record. Then, in the Holiday Bowl, Washington provided one of the bowl season s top games, beating an 18th-ranked Nebraska squad, The win over the Cornhuskers was the last of a series of exciting, gutsy victories in The season included three Husky wins decided on the very last play of the game (Oregon State, USC and Cal), plus another in which the winning score came inside the final minute (WSU). Sarkisian was introduced as the new head coach of the Washington football team on Dec. 8, From the start, Sarkisian made it clear that he didn t think it would take long to turn the program around and get it back to the high level of success that UW football has enjoyed throughout its history. In his first season, 2009, he seemed to prove that he was right. Washington, which posted a winless season for the first time in school history the year before Sarkisian signed on, surged to a 5-7 record in 2009, an improvement of five victories over the previous year. No BCS-conference school in the nation could boast such improvement in terms of wins in And, Sarkisian s Husky squad pulled off that feat against a schedule that included 10 opponents who ended the season bowl-eligible. Sarkisian came to the UW with a wealth of experience as a quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator. His string of success is nearly unprecedented as, during his time at USC, he coached two Heisman Trophy winners and oversaw one of the nation s most consistent and dominant offenses. Sarkisian spent 2007 and 2008 as the Trojans assistant head coach and offensive coordinator. He had also previously served as assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach ( ), quarterbacks coach ( ) and as an offensive assistant (2001) at USC, for a total of seven seasons there. During his seven seasons as a member of the Trojans staff, the team posted a combined record. As offensive coordinator, his record was Aside from his various roles at USC, Sarkisian also spent one season as quarterbacks coach for the Oakland Raiders in 2004 and as QBs coach at El Camino College in Torrance, Calif., in 2000, his first coaching job. Sarkisian starred at the quarterback position at the prep, collegiate and pro levels. After his standout career at Brigham Young University, he was played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League for three seasons ( ). He had a record-setting two-year ( ) career at BYU, playing under legendary coach Lavell Edwards. Sarkisian completed 549-of-824 passes (66.6 percent) for 7,755 yards and 55 touchdowns in his career. His career passing efficiency rating ranked third on the all-time NCAA list. As a senior in 1996, he led the nation in passing efficiency (173.6, No. 7 all-time) as the Western Athletic Conference champion Cougars went 14-1 and won the 1997 Cotton Bowl. He was the WAC Offensive Player of the Year in 1996, and earned second-team All-America honors. Sarkisian transferred to BYU from El Camino Junior College, where he played two seasons ( ). He was a first-team Junior College All- America selection as a sophomore and earned all-conference honors in 1993 as a Page UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON FOOTBALL MEDIA RESOURCES MONDAY PRESS CONFERENCE LIVE ON UWTV: This season UWTV, the on-campus television station for the University of Washington, will be carrying the weekly football press conferences LIVE featuring Husky head coach Steve Sarkisian. 3 COACHING STAFF: Washington s assistant coaching staff returns entirely includes five new members in 2012, meaning half of the 10 full-time coaches are in their first season at the UW. Nearly all of the nine full-time assistant coaches have some sort of tie to the Northwest and many played for then-pac-10 football programs. The offensive side of the ball is led by newcomer Eric Kiesau, the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach who came to the UW from California. A former QB at Portland State, Kiesau spent the last decade at either Cal or Colorado. He joins three offensive coaches who have been at the UW since Steve Sarkisian was hired. Associate head coach - offense and running backs coach Joel Thomas, in his fourth year at UW, grew up in Port Angeles, Wash., and is a member of the Idaho Athletic Hall of Fame. He is still the Vandals all-time leader in carries, rushing yards and rushing TDs. Fellow Idaho grad Dan Cozzetto is in his fourth season as the UW s run game coordinator and offensive line coach. Cozzetto grew up in Spokane, Wash., and was also the Washington line coach in He came to the UW from Arizona State. UW pass game coordinator and wide receivers coach Jimmie Daugherty played QB at Missouri and spent most of his coaching career prior to the UW at the University of San Diego. Assistant head coach, recruiting coordinator and special teams coordinator Johnny Nansen is a fourth-year coach at the UW. He grew up in Long Beach, Calif., but played football at Washington State and spent the previous five years at Idaho before moving over to the UW. The four defensive coaches are all new to the UW this year. Coordinator Justin Wilcox grew up in Junction City, Ore., and spent four years as a defensive back at Oregon. He came to the UW from Tennessee and, prior to that, coached at Boise State, among others. His former college roommate, Peter Sirmon, oversees the UW linebackers. A four-year starter at Oregon and a native of Walla Walla, Wash., Sirmon played in the NFL for seven years before moving on to coaching. After stints at Central Washington and Oregon, he worked with Wilcox at Tennessee before coming to Seattle. The new defensive backs coach is Keith Heyward, a four-year letterman at Oregon State. An L.A.-area native, Heyward has coached at OSU six of the last seven seasons. Defensive line coach and defensive run game coordinator Tosh Lupoi had spent his entire playing and coaching career at California before moving to the UW this past off-season. A former Cal defensive lineman, he d coached the line at his alma mater the last four years after two seasons as a GA. Washington also has two returning grad assistants and two new ones. Washington s two returners are Jordan Paopao and Donte Williams. Paopao, who works with the tight ends, was a four-year starting center at the University of San Diego while Williams, who prepped at Culver City High in the Los Angeles area, was a defensive back at Syracuse. The newcomers are Eric Guttorp, a Seattle native who wrapped up his career as a UW kicker last season, and Andrew Rolin, who played and coached at USD alongside Paopao and Dougherty before heading north to Seattle this off-season. VIEW FROM THE OTHER SIDELINE: While the Huskies full-time coaching staff doesn t include any UW graduates, nearly all of them have some tie to the state or to the Northwest and a surprising number have actually played for their alma mater against the Dawgs. Head man Steve Sarkisian s only loss in a 14-1 season as a senior at BYU in 1996 came to the UW at Husky Stadium. New defensive coaches Justin Wilcox and Peter Sirmon both faced the Huskies during their playing careers at Oregon from 1996 to Former Washington State linebacker Johnny Nansen, now the Huskies recruiting coordinator and special teams coach, was on the opposite sideline for several Apple Cups in the early-to-mid 1990s and new defensive backs coach Keith Heyward played in a few barnburners vs. the UW for Oregon State from 1997 to More recently, defensive line coach Tosh Lupoi squared off with the Huskies during his time as a d-lineman at California at the start of the last decade. And while neither offensive line coach Dan Cozzetto nor running backs coach Joel Thomas ever faced Washington during their careers at Idaho, both grew up in the Evergreen State. Finally, new offensive coordinator Eric Kiesau has also never played against Washington, but did play his college football just across the border at Portland State. HUSKIES vs. COUGARS HISTORY: The Washington-Washington State series dates back to 1900, when the teams played to a 5-5 tie in Seattle, but only since 1962 has the winner been awarded the Apple Cup trophy. Prior to the institution of the Apple Cup trophy, the winner of the Washington-WSU game was awarded the Governor s Trophy from 1934 to Washington holds a commanding edge in the 104-game series, including a record in Apple Cup games. The UW is against WSU in games played in Seattle, Washington is 9-6 in games played in WSU's Martin Stadium as the first UW-WSU game wasn't played there until 1982 (WSU's "home" games against UW were played in Spokane from 1950 to 1980 and Martin Stadium opened in 1972). UW is in away games in the series, including games played in both Spokane and Pullman. The Huskies have won 10 of the last 14 Apple Cups. Last year at CenturyLink Field, the UW won, 38-21, behind 291 yards and three TD passes from Keith Price. In 2010, Washington beat the Cougars, 35-28, in a tightly-contested game in Pullman. The winning score came on a 27-yard pass from Jake Locker to Jermaine Kearse with 44 seconds remaining. In 2009, the Huskies posted the first Apple Cup shutout since 1964 with a 30-0 win over the Cougars at Husky Stadium, breaking a two-game losing streak in the series. In 2008 in Pullman, the Cougars prevailed, 16-13, in double overtime. Five years ago at Husky Stadium, Alex Brink passed for 399 yards and hit Brandon Gibson with a pair of fourth-quarter TDs to lead WSU to a win. The Huskies broke another two-game losing streak with a win in Pullman in In 2005 at Martin Stadium, the Cougars beat the Dawgs, 28-25, behind a solid performance from Brink, who threw for two touchdowns and ran for another. Before that, in 2003, Washington pulled a third-straight upset (by AP ranking) in the series when an unranked Husky team notched a win over No. 8 Washington State. In 2002 in Pullman, in a game that surely ranks as one of the most memorable ever in the series, Washington shocked the No. 3 Cougars with a triple-overtime, win, despite trailing by 10 with only 4:30 to play. In 2001, when the two teams met at Husky Stadium, the 16th-ranked Huskies upset the No. 9 Cougars with a win. WASHINGTON-WSU TIES: While Johnny Nansen is the only member of the UW coaching staff to have played at Washington State, he s one of a three UW coaches who are familiar with the Palouse thanks to having played or coached at Idaho, located about seven miles east of WSU s campus. UW assistants Dan Cozzetto, Joel Thomas and Nansen all played at and coached for Idaho. WSU running backs coach Jim Mastro was the RBs coach at Idaho when Thomas played the position, setting numerous Vandals records. UW defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox and WSU linebackers coach Jeff Choate worked at Boise State together for several seasons, while WSU special teams coach Eric Russell was on the same staff as Wilcox and UW LBs coach Peter Sirmon at Tennessee last year. Finally, as far as coaches go, Sirmon played for the Tennessee Titans alongside WSU d-line coach Joe Salave a Only three Husky players comes from the eastern part of the state of Washington: Cody Bruns (Prosser), Bishop Sankey (Gonzaga Prep) and David Butler (Liberty Lake). Husky Desmond Trufant s brother, Marcus, was an All-America corner at WSU while UW linebacker Cooper Pelluer s father, Scott, was a standout linebacker for the Cougs. On the flip side, WSU QB David Gilbertson is the son of former Husky head coach Keith Gilbertson and WSU s Casey Locker is a first cousin of former UW quarterback Jake Locker. Cougar Kyle Lappano is the son of former UW offensive coordinator Tim Lappano and brother of former UW player Taylor Lappano. While there aren t that many Huskies from the eastern side of the state, there are plenty of Cougar players from this side of the Cascades. And of course, a number of Huskies and Cougars played with or against one another in their high school days. The UW s Connor Cree, Pelluer, William Chandler and Kasen Williams attended Skyline High with WSU s Gino Simone. Husky Kevin Smith and Coug Theron West were teammates at Centennial High in Compton, Calif. UW s Keith Price and Will Shamburger were classmates at St. John Bosco in L.A. along with WSU s Leon Brooks (WSU s Tyree Toomer was one year older at the same school). Huskies Stetson Shearer and Cole Sager and Cougar Anthony Furney all went to Burlington-Edison HS in Skagit County while Husky Nate Fellner and WSU s Jeff Tuel are both 2009 graduates of Clovis West HS in Fresno. UW s James Sample and Shaq Thompson and Cougar Darryl Paulo were teammates at Sacramento s Grant High while WSU s Joe Njoko went to Lakes HS, same as Huskies Jamaal and Sione Potoa e. UW s Austin Seferian-Jenkins and Korey Durkee went to Gig Harbor HS, as did WSU s Beau Glover. Sankey and WSU s Travis Long are both Gonzaga Prep grads. Finally, UW freshmern Marvin Hall and Jaydon Mickens both went to L.A. s Dorsey High with WSU s Jeremiah Allison while UW s Ben Riva and WSU s Sam Flor both went to Seattle s O Dea HS UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON FOOTBALL Page 3

4 DAWGS AND THE NORTHWEST: Washington s most-played rivalries are against the other three other northwest Pac-12 schools. The Huskies have faced Washington State 104 times, Oregon in 104 games and Oregon State on 96 occasions. Washington owns the advantage in all three series. The Huskies lead the Ducks , Washington State and Oregon State Combined, Washington has a (.625) record against its northwest rivals. Washington has played all three of the Northwest teams in a season on 83 prior occasions. Over those 83 seasons in which Oregon, OSU and WSU were all on the UW schedule, the Dawgs have swept all three 28 times. In the meantime, the Huskies have lost to all three in the same season on only seven occasions. WINNING CLOSE: Washington has won a remarkable 11 consecutive games decided by less than 10 points. This streak dates to the 2010 season-opener at BYU, when the Huskies lost Since then, the Huskies have won every game that has been decided by single digits, including four such wins this season. Here are those 11 victories: 2010 at USC (32-21), 2010 vs. Oregon State (35-34), 2010 at Cal (16-13), 2010 at WSU (35-28), 2011 vs. Eastern Washington, 2011 vs. Hawai i (40-32), 2011 vs. Cal (31-23), 2012 vs. San Diego State (21-12), 2012 vs. Stanford (17-13), 2012 vs. Oregon State (20-17), 2012 at Cal (21-13). 1,000-YARD STREAK: Husky sophomore tailback Bishop Sankey breached the 1,000-yard mark for the season in the win over Utah. He currently has 1,1150 yards for the season with one game plus a bowl to go. Sankey is just the 11th different player in UW history to rush for 1,000 yards and his season is the 16th 1,000-yard season in school history. In four years under head coach Steve Sarkisian (as well as running backs coach Joel Thomas and offensive line coach Dan Cozzetto), the UW has produced a 1,000-yard back each year. Chris Polk reached the benchmark each of the last three seasons and Sankey has taken over the streak in THE PAC-12: Last season, the Pac-10 Conference added Utah and Colorado to expand to the Pac-12. Washington, which along with California is one of two schools who have been in the conference since its founding in 1915, plays in the Pac-12 North, along with the other three Northwest schools (Oregon, OSU, WSU) and Stanford and California. Under current plans, each school will play all five division rivals, plus four of six teams in the other division each season. This year (and last), the Huskies will not face UCLA or Arizona State. Prior to last year, the last time that Washington didn t face UCLA in a season was in 1992 (when the Pac-10 schedule was eight games). The UW didn t face Arizona State in 2003 or CAPTAINS: At the Huskies annual Raise the Woof! preseason celebration, the captains for the 2012 season were unveiled. This season, thanks to a tie in the player voting, five captains were selected. On offense, junior quarterback Keith Price (Compton, Calif.) and senior center Drew Schaefer (Sammamish, Wash.) were honored. On defense, three players were selected: junior safety Sean Parker (Los Angeles), sophomore linebacker John Timu (Long Beach, Calif.) and senior cornerback Desmond Trufant (Tacoma). All five players are serving as UW captain for the first time as all four of the Huskies captains in 2011 have departed. DECADE AFTER DECADE: Washington has won a conference title and a trip to the Rose Bowl in each of the last nine decades, dating back to the 1920s when Washington won the berth in 1923 and In the 1930s, the Dawgs won the 36 title. In the 40s, Washington earned the trip in 1943 and then barely slipped in under the wire in the 1950s, winning the 1959 crown. The Huskies won two Rose Bowl berths in the 1960s and and one in the 1970s (1977). Titles in 1980 and 1982 did it for that decade and three straight trips to Pasadena to begin the 1990s covered that 10-year span. In the 2000s, UW was the first team to earn Rose Bowl berths in nine straight decades. USC joined the Dawgs in that distinction in 2004 after their New Year s Day appearance in Pasadena. Page 4 TEAM NOTES 2012 UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON FOOTBALL THE 100-YARD FACTOR: Since the 1947 season, Washington is (.760) when a Husky player rushes for 100 yards in a game. Washington is 5-1 such games this season as Bishop Sankey hit the century mark in wins over PSU, Stanford, Cal, Utah and Colorado and the loss at Oregon. HISTORY LESSON: Successfully rushing the football and winning go hand-inhand for the Huskies. Since 1990, UW has rushed for 200 yards in a game 80 times. The Huskies record stands at (.831) in those contests. Since 1995, UW is (.798) when rushing for 200 yards. HUSKY STADIUM RENOVATION: Husky Stadium is currently undergoing a massive renovation which began last November following the Oregon game. The Seattle icon was first opened in Upper decks were added in the 1950s (south) and 1980s (north). Renovations will completely remake the lower bowl and the south deck. The stadium track will be removed and an operations center for the football team will be built into the west end. For much more information, including a virtual look from every seat in the new stadium, photo galleries, live construction cams, and more, go to huskystadium.com. HISTORIC HUSKY STADIUM: The Oregon game on Nov. 5, 2011, marked the final game in Husky Stadium prior to major renovations that will be completed in time for the 2013 season. The 2011 season marked the 92nd season of play in Husky Stadium. Original construction on the facility was completed in 1920 when Washington played one game in the new campus facility. Thanks to several major renovations, Husky Stadium s seating capacity increased to 72,500. UW s all-time record in Husky Stadium stands at (.673). Washington will re-open the stadium vs. Boise State on Aug. 31, FAMILY TIES: As is the case with most seasons of Husky football, there are a number of players on the Washington football team related to either current or former Huskies. LB Jamaal Kearse is the younger brother of former WR Jermaine Kearse, who finished his career last season. RS-freshman safety Evan Zeger s father, John, played safety at the UW, lettering in 1980 and 1981, while sophomore WR Kasen Williams dad, Aaron was a four-year letterman ( ) wide receiver for the Huskies. Freshman OL Shane Brostek is the son of Husky All-America center Bern Brostek ( ). Senior DL Talia Crichton, is a cousin of former DE Daniel Te o-nesheim. Junior quarterback Keith Price is a cousin of former UW tailback Jelani Harrison. A little further afield, sophomore TE Michael Hartvigson is a cousin to former UW baseball pitchers Chad and Grant Hartvigson. Incidentally, at least three Huskies have close family ties to Washington State. LB Nate Fellner is the grandson of former WSU head coach Jim Sweeney. Cooper Pelluer s father, Scott, played at WSU, as did Husky cornerback Desmond Trufant s brother Marcus. Pelluer s uncle Steve, however, was a UW QB and his father Scott was an assistant coach at UW. RANDOM NOTES: Washington s roster includes player from eight different states (based on where the player completed high school): Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawai i, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington...
