1 WASHINGTON FOOTBALL WEB: GoHuskies.com CONTACTS: Jeff Bechthold & Brian Tom / bechtold@uw.edu & briantom@uw.edu Pac- 12 students are known for their success on the field, but they are also impressive, complete people with outside interests, diverse backgrounds, extracurricular activities, interesting families, busy schedules, and full lives. The release for this week s game is focused on who Washington students are off the field of play. ACADEMIC SPOTLIGHT Over the last several years, members of the UW football team (as well as student- athletes from other UW teams) have traveled to French Polynesia as part of a study abroad program. This past summer, Cory Littleton, Vita Vea, Cory Fuavai, Psalm Wooching, Ryan Masel and Siosifa Tufunga traveled to the islands of Tahiti and Huahine (population approximately 6,300) along with members of the Washington softball, volleyball and women's basketball teams. Several other current Husky football players participated in similar programs in the last several years, including Deontae Cooper and Shane Brostek, as well as current NFL players Danny Shelton, John Timu and Hau'oli Kikaha. While in French Polynesia, the UW student- athletes immersed themselves in the traditional culture of the Islands while also learning of the colonial history of the region. They shared their own varied backgrounds by engaging in sports clinics and in cultural events with their Tahitian hosts. Here's a link to a YouTube video on the event: And here's a link to a story: Each spring, every member of the UW football team takes part in the annual "Blitz the Sound" event, when football players visit local elementary schools. Based on input from each school, the Huskies host programs on anti- bullying, reading or physical education, among other topics, and frequently are the centerpiece of school- wise assemblies. Thanks to the UW's proximity to Seattle Children's Hospital (ranked among the nation's top- 10 children's hospitals), Husky players from the football team and all of the UW athletic programs are frequent visitors to the hospital throughout the year. Seattle Children's is about 1.5 miles northeast of Husky Stadium. 6:00a Treatment & Taping 7:15a Team & Position Meetings 8:45a Practice 11:00a Lunch 11:00a- 5:00p FULL SCHEDULE Here's a typical fall Tuesday for a UW football player. 4 THE HEAD COACH: Chris Petersen, who has built a reputation as an offensive innovator who carried the Boise State football program to its highest highs, was finally swayed to take on a new challenge when he agreed to become head coach of the Huskies in December of In his first season at Washington, Petersen led the Huskies to an 8-6 record and a berth in the TicketCity Cactus Bowl. He became the fastest active FBS coach to reach 100 career victories doing so in 117 games and tied with Knute Rockne for fifth fastest all-time after a win over cross-state rival Washington State in the Apple Cup. Petersen s Built for Life coaching philosophy has been embraced on and off the field by the Huskies in less than a year. Not only did Washington produce three first-team and seven honorable mention All-Pac-12 players, but a combined five players earned first or second team Academic All-Pac-12 recognition, including Danny Shelton who was named First-Team Academic All-American a first for Washington since Petersen, 50, the only two-time winner of the Paul Bear Bryant Award (2006 and 2009), compiled an exceptional record in his eight seasons as Boise State head coach ( ), including two unbeaten seasons (13-0 in 2006 and 14-0 in 2009) and two BCS bowl berths. He won five conference titles and posted a 57-6 record in conference play. Petersen, who also won the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Award in 2010, led the Broncos to 10 or more wins in seven of his eight seasons and to 12 or more in four straight ( ). In 2006, Petersen s Seattle (flagship) KOMO 1000 AM first season in charge in Boise, he led the Broncos to their first undefeated KOMO 97.7 FM season since 1958, when the school was a junior college. The 2006 season Aberdeen KWOK 1490 AM was capped by a overtime win over Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl, a Bellingham KPUG 1170 AM game remembered by many as one of the greatest in bowl-game history. That Centralia KELA 1430 AM Boise team ended the year ranked No. 5 in the final Associated Press top 25 Kelso/Longview KLOG 1490 AM poll. The following season, the Broncos went 10-3 and finished out of the Mt. Vernon KBRC 1430 AM polls for what would be the only time in Petersen s first seven seasons. The Mt. Vernon KRBC FM Moses Lake KWIQ 1020 AM 2008 squad went 12-1 and ranked No. 11 in the final top 25, finishing the Omak KOMW 680 AM regular season undefeated. In 2009, Petersen led the Broncos to their second undefeated campaign and another Fiesta Bowl berth. Boise State beat TCU, 17-10, in Arizona, becoming the first team from a non-bcs conference ever to win two BCS bowl games. The 09 Broncos checked in at No. 4 in the final AP poll. The 2010 season ended with a 12-1 record, a No. 9 final ranking and a win in the Las Vegas Bowl, the first of three straight trips to Vegas for Boise State. In 2011, BSU once again went 12-1, finishing with a No. 8 final ranking. Last season, Petersen s team went 11-2 and beat Washington in the Las Vegas Bowl, good for a No. 18 final ranking. In 2013, Boise State, which faced Washington in the first game at the newly renovated Husky Stadium, finished the regular season with an 8-4 record (Petersen came to the UW prior to the Broncos bowl game). Throughout his teams unmatched on-field success, Petersen also saw his Broncos succeed in the classroom. In 2011, Boise State was the only school to finish in the top 10 in both major polls and also receive a Public Recognition Award from the NCAA for finishing in the top 10 percent of the Academic Progress Rate (APR), the second of three straight such awards for the program. Boise State s APR was second in the nation in 2011 and 2012 and Petersen was recognized in 2012 for having the best APR for the two previous years among all FBS coaches. Known for his work with quarterbacks, Petersen tutored Ryan Dinwiddie, Jared Zabransky and Kellen Moore at Boise State. Moore set an NCAA record with 50 career wins as a starting QB while winning three conference player of the year awards. Moore was the only player ever to record four 3,000-yard seasons in both passing and total offense. His 142 passing touchdowns were second-most in NCAA history while his 14,667 career passing yards were fifth-most. He twice led the nation in passing efficiency and set an NCAA record for season interception percentage, throwing just three in 431 attempts in During his eight seasons seasons, 51 Broncos earned all-conference honors. Before taking over as head coach at Boise State, Petersen served as the Broncos offensive coordinator from Petersen began his coaching career in 1987 as freshman coach at his alma mater, UC Davis. In 1989, he became the Aggies varsity wide receivers coach. In 1992, Petersen moved to Pittsburgh, where he was quarterbacks coach. In 1993, he moved back west to take over Page University of Washington Football MEDIA RESOURCES MONDAY PRESS CONFERENCE ON UWTV: This season UWTV, the on-campus television station for the University of Washington, will be carrying the weekly football press conferences featuring Husky head coach Chris Petersen. 5 100 WINS: With last year s victory over Washington State in the Apple Cup, UW head coach Chris Petersen reached his 100th career victory. At the time, it put his record at , meaning that it took him 117 career games to reach his 100th victory. Only four coaches in major college history did it faster: Gil Dobie (N. Dakota St., UW, Navy, Cornell): 108 games George Woodruff (Penn): 109 games Bud Wilkinson (Oklahoma): 111 games Fielding Yost (Neb., Kansas, Stanford, San Jose St., Michigan): 114 games Chris Petersen (Boise State, Washington): 117 games Knute Rockne (Notre Dame): 117 games Additionally, Petersen s 117 games were fewer than any ACTIVE FBS coach required to make it to 100 victories. Here are the top five: Chris Petersen: 117 games Urban Meyer: 118 games Bob Stoops: 122 games Gary Patterson: 128 games Steve Spurrier: 129 games PETERSEN TOPS LIST: The 2015 NCAA record book lists the top active FBS coaches in terms of winning percentage (minimum five years at FBS) and the Huskies own Chris Petersen tops this list. Here are the top 10 FBS coaches by career winning percentage, at the start of the 2015 season: No. Name, School W L T Pct. 1. Chris Petersen, Washington Urban Meyer, Ohio State Jimbo Fisher, Florida State Bob Stoops, Oklahoma Nick Saban, Alabama Gary Patterson, TCU Mark Richt, Georgia Brian Kelly, Notre Dame Bobby Petrino, Louisville Steve Spurrier, South Carolina PETERSEN S FIRST FIVE: The NCAA Record Book also notes that Petersen won more games in his first season as a head coach (13-0 in 2006) than any coach in history and that his record over his first five seasons as a head coach (61-5) was fifth-best in history, ahead of the likes of Knute Rockne and Bud Wilkinson and behind coaching legends like Gil Dobie and Walter Camp. Here are the 10-best coaching performances over the first five years of a career: Coach, Team(s) Seasons W L T Pct. Gil Dobie, North Dakota St., Washington Walter Camp, Yale, Stanford George Woodruff, Penn Bob Neyland, Tennessee Chris Petersen, Boise State Knute Rockne, Notre Dame Barry Switzer, Oklahoma Elmer Henderson, Southern California Bud Wilkinson, Oklahoma Henry Williams, Army, Minnesota , COACHING STAFF: With a new head coach on board last season, the Husky coaching staff obviously included mostly new faces. However, all of them are back for year two (see next note for more on that). Of the nine full-time coaches on the 2015 staff, six came to the UW from Boise State along with Petersen after Defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski was on Petersen s staff in Boise in all eight seasons as head coach, including the last four as coordinator. Kwiakowksi, a BSU Hall-of-Fame defensive lineman, also worked at his alma mater from 1988 to Associate head coach and offensive line coach Chris Strausser spent 12 of the last 13 seasons prior to last year coaching in Boise (he coached at Colorado in 2006), meaning he was with Petersen seven of eight seasons. Running backs coach and recruiting coordinator Keith Bhonapha was also on Petersen s Broncos staff during Petersen s entire eight seasons, though he started as director of operations. He coached running backs his last five years at BSU. Assistant head coach and linebackers coach Bob Gregory came to Washington having spent the previous four seasons at Boise State. He was the defensive coordinator at California from 2002 to 2009 and, along with also having coached at Boise State in 2001, has also worked in the conference at Oregon. Former Oregon State quarterback Jonathan Smith, who turned in several top-class performances vs. the Huskies during his playing days, was quarterbacks coach at Boise State for Petersens last two seasons. Previously an offensive coordinator at Montana, he continued in that role (along with QBs) at Washington. Defensive backs coach Jimmy Lake, who spent the 2004 season in the same position at Washington under head coach Keith Gilbertson, was Petersen s DBs coach in Boise the last two years there, having spent five seasons in the NFL before that. Wide receivers coach Brent Pease worked at BSU under Petersen for his first six seasons as head coach. The former standout quarterback at Montana, Pease returned to the Northwest after having coached at Florida the previous two seasons. Defensive line coach and special teams coordinator Jeff Choate has a similar recent history as he worked under Petersen from 2006 through 2011 before going to Washington State in 2012 and Florida in Among the nine full-time assistants, the only returner from prior to 2014 is tight ends coach Jordan Paopao, who served in that same role in 2013 after having worked as a UW grad assistant in 2011 and 2012, when he was also in charge of tight ends. Three of the UW s four graduate assistant coaches are new in 2015, with Joshua Taufalele the only returner. Taufalale, a former New Mexico lineman, helps with the o-line. New to the GA staff are former Boise State receiver Kirby Moore, former Stanford defensive back Terrence Brown and former Kansas State linebacker Hansen Sekona. STAFF CONTINUITY: Washington s entire full-time coaching staff remained in tact following the 2014 season, which was coach Chris Petersen s first at the UW. He, along with all nine full-time assistants, are back in That s actually rare in UW history as the coaching staffs have gone unchanged over two or more seasons only twice before (UW records for coaching staffs go back to the mid-1950s): and dawgs vs. the mwc: Washington has a pretty fair amount of history with the current (2015 season) members of the Mountain West Conference, including the season opener this year at Boise State. Washington has played all but three (Colorado State, New Mexico and UNLV) of the 12 schools that comprise the MWC. All totaled, the Huskies are against current MWC members, Here's the breakdown: 2-6 vs. Air Force; 2-2 vs. Boise State; 2-1 vs. Fresno State; 4-1 vs. Hawai'i; 1-1 vs. Nevada; 3-0 vs. San Diego State; 10-0 vs. San Jose State; 2-0 vs. Utah State; and 2-0 vs. Wyoming University of Washington Football Page 5

6 UW-UTAH STATE HISTORY: Despite having played one another only twice in history, the Washington-Utah State series goes back a long way. In fact, the Huskies have played the Aggies just twice, but the first of those was 111 years ago (Oct. 22, 1904), when 1,000 fans came out to Denny Field to see Washington defeat the Aggies, At the time, the UW s scoring output was its secondmost in history. The game was part of a seven-game road stretch for Utah State, a string that included games at Oregon State and Stanford immediately before the trip to Seattle. In 1998, the Aggies returned to Seattle for a mid-season game at Husky Stadium. The Huskies won that game, 53-12, with Marques Tuiasosopo starting in place of the injured Brock Huard. The Huskies totaled 13 quarterback sacks in the game, including six in the first quarter, setting a school record. The game also featured the debut of UW receiver and return specialist Joe Jarzynka as the Huskies placekicker as he scored the Huskies first points on a first-quarter field goal. UW-UTAH STATE TIES: Utah State defensive line coach Ikaika Malloe is a UW graduate and a four-year letterman ( ) for the Huskies. Malloe first began his college coaching career under Jim Lambright and Rick Neuheisel. USU special teams and running backs coach Dave Ungerer and Husky LBs coach Bob Gregory were on the same staff together at Cal in Washington has no players from Utah on its roster while Utah State has one Washingtonian: freshman linebacker Mason Tobeck (Puyallup/Cascade Christian), son of former Seahawk and WSU offensive lineman Robbie Tobeck. Home vs. Non Conference: Washington has been very tough to beat in home, non-conference games over the last several decades. Going back to (and including) the 1981 season, the Huskies have posted a record against non- Pac-10/Pac-12 foes in Husky Stadium. Those 13 losses have come to Nebraska (2010), LSU (2009), BYU (2008), Oklahoma (2008), Ohio State (2007), Notre Dame (2005), Fresno State (2004), Nevada (2003), Air Force (1999), Nebraska (1997), Notre Dame (1995), Colorado (1989) and Oklahoma State (1985). Notable wins wins during that stretch include victories over No. 19 Boise State last season, No. 22 Boise State in 2007, No. 11 Michigan in 2001, No. 4 Miami in 2000, and No. 12 Nebraska in Prior to the 2004 loss to Nevada, Washington hadn t lost a home game to a non-league opponent since falling to Air Force, 31-21, on September 18, The Huskies had won 10 such games before that Nevada loss. The UW is 12-2 over its last 14 home, non-league games, with a 10-game winning streak. THE PAC-12: Prior to the 2011 season, the Pac-10 Conference added Utah and Colorado to expand to the Pac-12. Washington, which along with California is one of two schools who have been in the conference since its founding in 1915, plays in the Pac-12 North, along with the other three Northwest schools (Oregon, OSU, WSU) and Stanford and California. Under current plans, each school will play all five division rivals, plus four of six teams in the other division each season. The first two seasons, the Huskies did not face UCLA or Arizona State. In 2013 and 14, the Huskies didn t face Utah or USC. This year, neither UCLA nor Colorado are on the UW schedule. CAPTAINS: Washington elected six captains for the season, all seniors: TB Deontae Cooper, OLB Travis Feeney, QB Jeff Lindquist, WR Jaydon Mickens, OL Siosifa Tufunga, DL Tanielo Tupou. The UW will also utilize one game captaion for each week s contest. Here s a list of game-by-game captains: Boise State: Cory Littleton Sacramento State: Brian Clay TEAM NOTES THE 100-YARD FACTOR: Since the 1947 season, Washington is (.759) when a Husky player rushes for 100 yards in a game. The Huskies were 4-2 in such games last season and are 1-0 this season HISTORY LESSON: Successfully rushing the football and winning go handin-hand for the Huskies. Since 1990, UW has rushed for 200 yards in a game 96 times. The Huskies record stands at (.839) in those contests. Since 1995, UW is (.804) when rushing for 200 yards. HUSKY STADIUM RENOVATION: Husky Stadium underwent a major renovation over from Nov., 2011, through Aug., 2013, as the entire lower bowl and south upper deck were demolished and replaced. The new facility features a new, state-of-the-art football operations center (weight room, training room, locker room, meeting rooms, coaches offices) in the west end, much more premium seating options and a new playing surface. Husky Stadium had featured a track up until 2011, so seats that were once far from the field, particularly in the west end, are much closer to the action. Washington is 11-4 at home since the re-opening of Husky Stadium. ALASKA AIRLINES FIELD AT HUSKY STADIUM: The Oregon game on Nov. 5, 2011, marked the final game in Husky Stadium prior to major renovations that have now been completed. The Huskies re-opened their home field with a 38-6 win over then-no. 19 Boise State on Aug. 31, The 2015 season marks the 95th season of play in Husky Stadium. Original construction on the facility was completed in 1920 when Washington played one game in the new campus facility. UW s all-time record in Husky Stadium stands at (.673). ACADEMIC SUCCESSES Washington s APR (Academic Progress Rate) for football has gone up every year for the last four years in a row: 946 in ; 949 in ; 954 in ; 967 in ; 977 in Washington s most recent APR (977) ranked No. 2 in the Pac-12 Conference, trailing only Stanford (987). Three UW teams led the Pac-12 in APR in the most recent survey, while eight other UW programs ranked second in the conference. The UW football team has four returning players who earned some level of Academic All-Pac-12 last season: first-teamer Jake Eldrenkamp (3.65 in business administration); second-teamer Siosifa Tufunga (3.31 in American ethnic studies); second-teamer Trevor Walker (3.48, pre-arts & sciences); honorable mention Jeff Lindquist (3.47 in business administration). Washington s team grade point average for spring, 2015 quarter (the most recently completed full academic period) was 3.08, highest in UW football history. Nine individual football players made the Dean s List for spring, In total, 121 UW student-athletes made the Dean s List last spring and 67 percent of all student-athletes posted a GPA of 3.00 or better. Seventeen teams had a team GPA of 3.00 or better. Page University of Washington Football
