7 After last year's strong showing, Boise State started the season with high hopes and visions of trophies and bowl games in their heads. Ranked high in the national polls, the Broncos started on their climb towards the Big Sky Championship. The first game of the '72 season matched the Broncos against the University of Nevada-Las Vegas before 12,000 fans in Bronco Stadium. The Broncos exploded into an exciting season with the victory. 8 Travelling to Areata, California, the confident Broncos ripped into the Yellowjackets of Humboldt State. The game was all the Broncos until late in the fourth quarter, Humboldt tied it up With two minutes left, Boise took it all the way for a touchdown to win it TOP RIGHT: No. 81, Don Hutt, Wide Receiver. 73

9 BRONCOS DUMP "Bud Davis for Senate" balloons found the air at Boise State-Weber and Homecoming games. Ron Autele, No. 15, dove in for two touchdowns and passed for four more against Weber. After an extended campout at Weber State, the Indian Head came back to Boise.

10 WEBER STATE IN CLIMB TOWARD BIG SKY CHAMPIONSHIP The Broncos went on to win it No. 83 Mark Goodman, Defensive Right End. No. 67 Mike Greever, Defensive Left Tackle. TOflO The Broncos of Boise State well remembered last year's game with Weber State. They also remembered getting beat They remembered the humiliation. They were determined that it wasn't going to happen again as they stomped Weber before a capacity crowd in Bronco Stadium. Thus the Indian Head returned to Boise State. The Broncos, now 3-0 on the season, were ready to take on anybody... 75

11 "WHAT HAPPENED?" With high hopes and well on the way to an an undefeated season, the Broncos travelled to San Louis Obispo, California, and met their match against Cal Poly. With both teams vying for control throughout the game, Cal-Poly scored with two minutes remaining, crushing the Bronco effort with a victory. 12 - v Licking their wounds, the Broncos faced the University of Nevada-Reno in Bronco Stadium and pulverized them in a victory. With skill and revenge, the Broncos marched from one end of the field to the other, racking up point after point. The win built their record to four wins and one loss. ABOVE: No. 72 Brian Sopatyk. 13 BRONCOS FALL TO MONTANA With everything on their minds except football, the Broncos headed into Big Sky Country to encounter the Wildcats of Montana State. The Wildcats handed the Broncos their first conference loss of the season. Boise State, over-confident from their early romps, were literally run off the field by Montana State. 14 SCHOOLS- LOSE SIGHT OF CROWN With renewed determination, the BSC Broncos made an effort to get it all back together again. In Missoula, against the Grizzlies, their efforts were to no avail. The Broncos made a definite effort, but they were bruised again by a loss at the hands of the University of Montana. No. 34 Cary Hoshaw, Left Halfback. No. 12 Jim McMillan, Quarterback. 16 ... LOSE A FEW. WIN A FEW.. After a winless two-week stand in Montana, the Broncos got back in the groove against Portland State in a non-conference battle. On rain-soaked turf, the Broncos splashed to a 33-7 victory over Portland State. Returning to conference action, the Broncos travelled to Flagstaff, Arizona and soundly trounced Northern Arizona University, the last place team in the Big Sky Conference. 18 WIN OVER IDAHO STATE CAPS HOMECOMING WEEK Perhaps the only good thing to come'out of this year's Homecoming was the ballgame itself. The Broncos were really up for this game; they wanted to win this one above all because they could spoil ISU's chance for the Big Sky Championship. ISU did the same thing to Boise State last year. The game started out in an overcast, but as the Broncos roared on, the day started to get brighter. A close game all the way, Boise State came through to cap Homecoming with a victory. 83

19 IDAHO VANDALS UPSET BOISE The University of Idaho, eager for revenge after last year's humiliating loss, finished off the season for the Broncos in a heart-breaker. Boise State led all the way till midway in the fourth quarter when the Vandals took the lead. With two minutes left, the Broncos had the chance to score but dropped that chance in the endzone. Lyle Smith, BSC Athletic Director, was honored for his efforts at Boise State. Smith joined the coaching staff of Boise Junior College in His football record stands as one of the finest in the nation. Smith became Boise State Athletic Director in Boise State Athletic Director Lyle Smith was honored by the Bronco Athletic Association and Boise State College at the BSC-U. of ID. game.
