UMass stands against the Yellow Jackets in Amherst, with a streak of six straight wins. The lone win in the series for AIC came on Sept. 21, 1957, when the Yellow Jackets posted a 19-7 victory in Amherst. The last meeting between the two schools came on Oct. 21, 2000, when the Minutemen won 21-0 at McGuirk Alumni Stadium. (A complete breakdown of the series between UMass and AIC can be found on page 104 of the UMass football media guide, while scores from each meeting are located on page 115.) MINUTEMEN LOOK TO START SEASON 2-0: With last week s 52-3 victory over Central Connecticut State, UMass won its season opener for the third time in the last four seasons. If the Minutemen can defeat American International College this week, they will begin the year with a 2-0 record for the first time since the 1986 season. In 1986, UMass won its first four games before falling to Delaware in week five. The school record for most consecutive victories to begin a season is held by the 1975 squad, which opened the year with eight straight wins before finishing 8-2. UMASS HAS TWO 100-YARD RUSHERS AGAIN: In last week s victory over Central Connecticut State, sophomore Jason Peebler (Modesto, Calif.) and redshirt freshman Raunny Rosario (Lowell, Mass.) both had impressive debuts at tailback. Peebler, who converted from wide receiver in the spring, led the team with 126 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries, while also catching a nine-yard touchdown pass. Rosario chipped in with 116 yards and a score on 12 carries, to go along with two receptions for 15 yards, and was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Week. The pair gave UMass two 100-yard rushers in a single game for the first time since Oct. 21, 2000, against AIC, when Kevin Quinlan rushed for 120 yards and Marcel Shipp added 111 yards. Shipp and Quinlan combined to rush for 100 yards in the same game three times during their UMass careers. BROWER BRINGS IN PRESEASON ACCOLADES:J u n i o r defensive tackle Valdamar Brower (Florence, Mass.) has earned a number of national honors heading into the 2002 season. He has been named one of 16 candidates for the Buck Buchanan Aw a rd, which is p resented annually by The Sports Network to the nation s top defensive player. He is also a consensus preseason All-American, earning first team distinction from The Sports Network, L i n d y s, S t reet & Smith s and Don Hansen s National Weekly Football Gazette. In addition, B rower was named preseason first team All-Atlantic 10 Conference. Athletics Web Site:

2 MINUTEMEN EARN PRESEASON HONORS: In addition to Valdamar Bro w e r, five other members of the UMass football team have earned honors heading into the 2002 season. Senior punter David Sanger (Cocoa Beach, Fla.) joined Brower on the preseason All-Atlantic 10 Conference first team, while senior center Maikel Miret (Miami, Fla.), senior tight end G r eg Wa r d (Doylestown, Pa.), senior placekicker D o u g White (Claremont, Calif.) and senior wide receiver A d r i a n Zullo (Pompano Beach, Fla.) all earned second team honors. Sanger was also a preseason second team All-America selection by Don Hansen s National Weekly Football Gazette, with Zullo receiving third team honors and White garnering honorable m e n t i o n distinction. WHIPPLE ENTERS WEEK WITH 104 WINS: Now in his fifth season as head coach of the Minutemen, Mark Whipple has 104 victories in his collegiate coaching care e r. Whipple owns a care e r re c o rd of (.667) in 15 years as a collegiate head coach, including five seasons at UMass (32-19 / 1998-present), four years at Brown (24-16 / ) and six seasons at New Haven (48-17 / ). With last year s victory over N o rt h e a s t e rn, he became the seventh coach in school history with 30 wins at UMass. In 2000, Whipple became the first Minuteman coach in 20 years to lead his team to three consecutive winning seasons. The last UMass coach to accomplish the feat was Bob Pickett, who led the Minutemen to four straight winning years from Whipple was the fastest coach in school history to re c o rd 20 victories, picking up the 20th win of his UMass career against Connecticut in He needed only 26 games to reach the 20-win mark. Pre v i o u s l y, Mike Hodges held the re c o rd for fewest games needed to reach 20 wins, going 20-7 in his first 27 games as UMass head coach. Whipple also became the first coach in school history to win 20 games in his first two seasons. STRONG AFTER A LOSING SEASON:Despite coming off a 3-8 season in 2001, there is reason for the Minutemen to have optimism in The last five times UMass finished a year with a losing record, it came back to post a winning mark the following season. The last losing record for the Minutemen prior to 2001 came in 1997 (with a 2-9 mark), but they followed that up with a 12-3 mark and the Division I-AA national championship in Other years in which UMass has rebounded recently were 1995 (going 6-5 after a 5-6 mark in 1994), 1992 (posting a 7-3 record after going 4-7 in 1991), 1988 (going 8-4 and advancing to the Division I-AA playoffs following a 3-8 mark in 1987) and 1985 (with a 7-4 re c o rd after going 3-8 in 1984). The Minutemen have not had back-to-back losing seasons since 1983 and 1984 (going 3-8 both years). In addition, the only other time a Mark Whipple coached team had a losing record (3-7 at New Haven in 1991), his squad came back to post a 12-1 record the following year UMass Football Media Services and Policies INTERVIEWS Interviews with head coach Mark Whipple, his staff and UMass players can be set up by contacting Charles Bare, Chris Forman or Nick Joos in the UMass Media Relations Office at (413) Players and coaches are available in person and for phone interviews Tuesday through Thursday afternoons outside the locker room at McGuirk Alumni Stadium. 3 ZULLO HAS BIG DAY IN RETURN TO ACTION: Senior wide receiver Adrian Zullo saw his first action since October of 2000 in the victory over Central Connecticut State, after missing the last season and a half due to injury. He made his return a successful one, leading the team with six receptions for 96 yards and a touchdown, while also opening the game with a career-long 59- yard kickoff return. Zullo finished the day with 170 all-purpose yards, marking the 15th time in his collegiate career he has posted 100-plus all-purpose yards. In 2000, Zullo totaled 25 receptions for 398 yards and six touchdowns, despite only playing in the first five games of the season. That came on the heels of a 1999 campaign in which he caught 81 passes for 1,253 yards and nine scores, while averaging a school single season record 15.6 yards every time he touched the ball. As a freshman in 1998, Zullo was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Year, after catching 29 passes for 479 yards and eight scores. Zullo has caught at least one pass in each of his last 20 games and has multiple receptions in 26 of 33 career contests. He already holds a number of UMass records, including career marks for both receptions and receiving yards. Here is a look at every school record currently held by Zullo: Single Game Receptions.11 (vs. Villanova & Richmond, 1999) Single Game Receiving Yards (vs. Richmond, 1999) Single Game Receiving Touchdowns (vs. UNH, 1999) Single Season All-Purpose Yards / Play (1999) Career Receptions (1998-present) Career Receiving Yards ,226 (1998-present) Career Receiving Touchdowns (1998-present) BROWER CONTINUES TO SHINE: Junior All-American Valdamar Brower looks to once again be among the nation s premier defensive linemen in 2002, after emerging as one of the biggest bright spots for the UMass defense last season. Bro w e r opened the season by re c o rding five tackles and a pass breakup in the victory over Central Connecticut State. In 2001, he led the team and the Atlantic 10 with 10 sacks for 70 yards, to go along with 57 total tackles and 24 tackles for loss. Brower finished the season ranked second nationally in Division I-AA in tackles for loss, while standing fifth in sacks. His top game came against Rhode Island, when he totaled 10 tackles, with a care e r-high six tackles for loss, three sacks and a forced fumble. Brower also re c o rded two sacks against both Hofstra and James Madison, while making multiple tackles for loss in seven out of 11 games. Following the conclusion of the season, he re c e i v e d All-America honors from The Sports Network, the Associated Press, and Don Hansen s National Weekly Football Gazette. In 2000, Brower led all UMass defensive linemen with 57 total tackles, while also recording five sacks and 11 tackles for loss. Brower now has a career total of 119 tackles, including 15 sacks and 35 tackles for loss. MINUTEMEN BRING IN ACADEMIC HONORS:F i v e members of the UMass team were honored last season for their work both on the field and in the classroom. Junior linebacker J e r emy Cain (Tamarac, Fla.), departed tight end Eddie Campbell, departed quarterback Matt Guice, junior linebacker Mark Kimener (Oakton, Va.) and senior placekicker Doug White were all selected to the 2001 Academic All-Atlantic 10 Conference team, with both Cain and White being named to the squad for the second consecutive year. This season, look for White and senior wide receiver Neal Brown (Danville, Ky.) to be top candidates for Academic All-America honors. Both Brown and White currently carry cumulative grade point averages of 3.70 in the School of Management. The Last Time... UMass 21, American International College 0 October 21, 2000 Amherst, Mass. Scoring Summar y 1st 2nd 3r d 4th Total AIC UMass The UMass defense posted its first shutout of the 2000 season, as the 15th-ranked Minutemen recorded a 21-0 victory over American International College at McGuirk Alumni Stadium. The Minutemen struggled to score early in the game, driving into AIC territory four times in the first half without putting any points on the board. UMass finally broke into the scoring column in the third quarter, when Kevin Quinlan scored on a 19-yard rush. Quinlan increased the lead to 14-0 in the fourth quarter with a one-yard touchdown run, then Marcel Shipp concluded the scoring with a seven-yard run. During the 2001 season, he punted 68 times for 2,812 yards (41.4 average), with 20 punts inside the opponents 20-yard line, and ranked second in the Atlantic 10 and 13th nationally in punting average. He also had UMass ranked seventh nationally and second in the Atlantic 10 in net punting average last year. His top game last season came against James Madison, when he averaged 50.3 yards on eight punts, to break John Romboli s school single game record for punting average (50.2 at Boston College on Nov. 22, 1975). In addition, his 71-yard punt against the Dukes ranked as the eighthlongest in school history, and he was named Special Teams Player of the Week by the Atlantic 10 Conference and Don Hansen s National Weekly Football Gazette. In 2000, Sanger punted 38 times, landing 14 punts inside the opponents 20-yard line. He also averaged 39.4 yards per punt, helping UMass to an Atlantic 10-best (and sixth in Division I-AA) net average of 36.8 yards per punt. Over the course of his UMass career, Sanger has now punted 170 times for 6,892 yards, and his average of 40.5 yards per punt ranks as the best in school history. In last year s victory over Nort h e a s t e rn, White connected on a care e r-long 41-yard field goal. His previous long was a 40-yard field goal against Delaware on Nov. 11, During the 2000 season, White connected on 10 of 11 field goal attempts, with his only miss being a 47-yarder against New Hampshire which was blocked, and ranked second on the team in scoring with 46 points. Over the course of his care e r, he has now hit 20 of 26 field goals and 65 of 71 extra points for a total of 125 points. White ranks fourth all-time at UMass in field goals made and third in extra points made. KROHN TAKES OVER AT QUARTERBACK:Junior Jef f Krohn (Phoenix, Ariz.) had a solid perf o rmance in his debut as UMass starting quarterback last week. He completed 15 of 30 passes for 198 yards with four touchdowns and two interc e p t i o n s against Central Connecticut State. Krohn, who transferred to UMass from Arizona State University in January, came to the Minutemen after leading the Pacific-10 Conference in passing eff i- ciency last season. He started nine games for the Sun Devils in 2001, completing 115 of 213 passes for 1,942 yards and 19 touchdowns with seven interceptions. Krohn also started nine games for Arizona State during the 2000 season, completing 125 of 254 passes for 1,751 yards and 12 touchdowns with six interceptions. He led the team with 16 tackles in the game, including one sack. Cain, who moved to an outside linebacker spot this year, ranked third on the team with 78 total tackles last season, and stood third on the squad with 11 tackles for loss. This came despite missing nearly four entire games due to injury. Against Richmond in the 2001 season finale, Cain led the team with a care e r-high 17 total tackles, including 12 solo stops. In 2000, Cain played in all 11 games and re c o rded 45 total tackles as the first linebacker off the bench. For his care e r, he now has 139 total tackles, including 90 solo stops and 14 tackles for loss. The Minutemen have gone 18-7 (.720) at home from 1998 to present, improving their all-time record at McGuirk to (.648). Since 1992, UMass has had a losing record at home only once, while posting a home record of (.661) during that span. The Minutemen also have a mark of 13-4 at McGuirk Stadium against Atlantic 10 Conference opponents under Whipple. Tailback Jason Peebler stands first in scoring (18.0 points/game), followed by wide receiver DeShon Hardy in second (12.0 points/game) and placekicker Doug White in third (10.0 points/game). Peebler also leads the league in rushing (126.0 yards/game), with tailback Raunny Rosario ranking third (116.0 yards/game), while Hardy leads the conference in punt returns (14.7 yards/return) and redshirt freshman free safety Shannon James (Stratford, Conn.) stands first in interceptions (1.0 picks/game). UMass also has t h ree of the top five all-purpose rushers, with wide receiver Adrian Zullo standing second (170.0 yards/game), Peebler fourth (135.0 y a rds/game) and Rosario fifth (131.0 yards/game). In addition, Zullo ranks second in receiving yards (96.0 yards/game) and third in receptions (6.0 catches/game), quarterback Jeff Krohn stands f o u rth in passing yards (198.0 yards/game) and third in passing e fficiency (136.1 rating), and White is fifth in field goals (1.0 made/game). As a team, UMass leads the league in scoring off e n s e (52.0 points/game), total offense (479.0 yards/game) and kickoff re t u rns (40.5 yard s / re t u rn); ranks second in scoring defense (3.0 points/game), passing efficiency defense (75.9 rating) and punt re t u rns (14.7 yard s / re t u rn); and stands third in rushing off e n s e (254.0 yards/game) and passing efficiency (140.9 rating). A TOUGH SLATE:One of the main reasons why UMass had a 3-8 record last season was that the Minutemen faced one of the nation s toughest schedules. UMass 2001 schedule ranked as the second hardest among all Division I-AA schools according to Jeff Sagarin s rankings, thanks to games against Division I-A Marshall, Delaware, Hofstra, James Madison, Maine, New Hampshire, Northeastern, Rhode Island, Richmond, Villanova and William & Mary. Richmond s schedule ranked as the toughest in Division I- AA, with Cal State Northridge s placing third. The Minutemen will tackle yet another tough list of opponents in 2002, facing Division I-A North Carolina State in addition to the always tough Atlantic 10 slate. UMASS ON THE 14TH: In this week s game against American I n t e rnational College, the Minutemen will be playing on September 14 for only the fifth time in school history. UMass enters the game with a 1-3 mark on Sept. 14, including an 0-1 record in home games. The Minutemen won their last game played on this date, downing Holy Cross in Worcester in UMass losses on Sept. 14 came at Villanova in 1974 (17-13), at Richmond in 1985 (19-14) and at home against Holy Cross in 1991 (22-20).
