McGuirk Alumni Stadium (17,000) Amherst, Mass. Homecoming THE SERIES WITH HOFSTRA: The Minutemen have faced the Pride only six times before, with Hofstra leading the all-time series 5-1. The visiting team has won five of the six meetings in the series, with Hofstra s 2001 victory in Hempstead (36-6) being the lone exception. The Pride has won all four games played in Amherst, downing UMass in 1997, in 1999, in 2000 and in The lone Minuteman victory in the series came during the 1998 season in Hempstead, when UMass prevailed (A complete breakdown of the series between UMass and Hofstra can be found on page 109 of the UMass football media guide, while scores from each meeting are located on page 115.) HOMECOMING SUCCESS: The Minutemen have been awfully tough on opponents in Homecoming games the last few years. UMass is 9-2 in Homecoming games the last 11 years, including a string of seven straight wins from During that time, the Minutemen stand 5-1 against nationally-ranked opponents in Homecoming games, including a win over No. 2 Maine last season. Prior to a 1999 setback against Hofstra, UMass had not lost a Homecoming contest in Amherst since 1991 (a loss to Rhode Island). This season marks only the 19th time UMass has recorded at least five wins in its first six games, as it has started 6-0 three times (1931, 1972, 1975), two times (1963, 1990) and 5-1 on 14 occasions (1901, 1922, 1924, 1925, 1932, 1960, 1964, 1966, 1967, 1977, 1979, 1986, 1992, 2003). In addition, the Minutemen are 4-0 in Atlantic 10 games so far this year, their best start in league play since the 1990 team began Yankee Conference play with seven straight wins. 2 DEFENSE IMPRESSIVE AGAINST THE RUN: The UMass defense has been outstanding against the run this season, ranking 10th in the nation by allowing opponents to average only 94.2 yards per game on the ground. The Minutemen have allowed a total of 565 yards and six touchdowns through six games this season, but 235 of those yards and four of the scores came against Division I-A Kansas State. In games against Division I-AA opponents, UMass has given up only 330 yards and two touchdowns on 183 carries, for averages of 66.0 yards per game and 1.8 yards per carry. The Minutemen have also shut down two of the Atlantic 10 Conference s top running backs, holding Maine s Marcus Williams (122.4 yards/game) to 67 yards on 17 carries and James Madison s Alvin Banks (93.2 yards/game) to seven yards on four carries. COSTELLO OFF TO IMPRESSIVE STAR T: Junior cornerback Steve Costello (Kingston, N.Y.) has been one of the leaders of a strong UMass defense so far this season. Last week at William & Mary, Costello recorded seven total tackles with three tackles for loss, an interception and a pass breakup. In addition, he held the Tribe s all-time leading receiver, Walter Payton Award candidate Rich Musinski (187 career catches, 3,623 yards, 28 touchdowns), to only three catches for 30 yards. In the victory over James Madison, Costello forced a fumble to set up a Minuteman touchdown in the third quarter, while also making three total tackles. In the game at Maine, he had a 35-yard fumble return for a touchdown, in addition to making a pair of tackles. In the Kansas State game, Costello made seven total tackles and recorded a pair of UMass vs. Hofstra Football Game Notes interceptions, to become the first Minuteman to intercept two passes in a game since Jeremy Robinson accomplished the feat at Delaware on Sept. 22, In the season opener against Central Connecticut State, he led the UMass defense with eight tackles, while recording a sack and intercepting a pass, which he returned for 24 yards. On the season, Costello now leads the team with four interceptions, while also recording 31 total tackles. Over the course of his UMass career, he has 74 total tackles and eight interceptions, to lead all active Minutemen in career picks. DEMERS HAS BREAKOUT GAME AGAINST TRIBE: Junior Rich Demers (East Boston, Mass.), who has seen time as both a fullback and a tailback this season, had the top game of his Minuteman career against William & M a ry last week. Demers rushed 26 times for 171 yards and a pair of touchdowns against the Tribe, while also catching three passes for 26 yards, and was named Atlantic 10 Conference Offensive Player of the Week. Through six games so far this year, he now has 263 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 38 carries, in addition to catching 14 passes for 101 yards and three scores. Demers is in his first season with the Minutemen, after transferring from UMass-Lowell, which dro p p e d its football program in the spring. During the 2002 season with the River Hawks, Demers rushed 62 times for 323 yards and four touchdowns. In addition to Demers, the Minutemen have two other transfers from UMass-Lowell this season. Senior tight end Glenn Opie (North Port, Fla.) has two catches for 18 yards so far this year, while senior wide receiver Johnson Owumi (Dorchester, Mass.) has totaled six receptions for 91 yards UMass Football Media Services and Policies INTERVIEWS Interviews with head coach Mark Whipple, his staff and UMass players can be set up by contacting Charles Bare in the UMass Media Relations Office at (413) Players and coaches are available in person and for phone interviews Tuesday through Thursday afternoons outside the locker room at McGuirk Alumni Stadium. Members of the media should submit player interview requests to Charles Bare of UMass by the five-minute mark of the fourth quarter. At home games, all postgame interviews will be held in the conference room of the UMass football locker room complex behind the south end zone. Following a 10-minute cooling off period, the visiting head coach and selected players will be escorted to the interview area. After the visiting team has finished its session, head coach Mark Whipple and requested UMass players will be available in the interview area. 3 CAIN AMONG NATION S BEST: Senior All-America linebacker Jeremy Cain (Tamarac, Fla.) is one of the top candidates for the 2003 Buck Buchanan Award, which is presented by The Sports Network to the top defensive player in the nation. In the victory over New H a m p s h i re, he totaled eight tackles with a sack for 18 yards and a forced fumble. In the victory at Maine, Cain had 11 total tackles with one tackle for loss and a forced fumble. In the game at Kansas State, he led the team with 14 total tackles, while making two tackles for loss and breaking up a pass. Cain also totaled six tackles with a sack, two tackles for loss and a blocked punt for a safety against Central Connecticut State; made nine tackles with a tackle for loss against James Madison; and had 11 total tackles at William & Mary. On the season, he now has 59 tackles, seven tackles for loss, two sacks and two f o rced fumbles. Last year, Cain led the team with 133 total tackles, including 97 solo stops, 18 tackles for loss and seven sacks. He easily led the Atlantic 10 Conference in solo tackles (no other player had more than 85), while ranking sixth nationally in Division I-AA with an average of 8.1 solo stops per game. During the 2002 season, Cain reached double figures in tackles eight times, including each of the final six games of the year. At the conclusion of the 2002 season, he was named a second team All- American by Don Hansen s National Weekly Football Gazette, in addition to earning second team All-Atlantic 10 honors. Over the course of his care e r, Cain now has 315 total tackles, including 220 solo stops and 37 tackles for loss. He enters this week s game ranked seventh all-time at UMass in career solo tackles, while standing ninth in career total tackles. H O WARD AND PEEBLER LEAD REVAMPED UMASS RECEIVERS: Senior Jimmie Howard (Camden, N.J.) and junior Jason Peebler (Modesto, Calif.) have taken over as the starting wide receivers for the Minutemen this season, after UMass lost its top three players at the position due to graduation. Peebler currently leads the team with 26 catches for 539 yards and four scores, while Howard ranks second with 22 receptions for 244 yards and two touchdowns. In the victory over New Hampshire, Peebler caught five passes for 177 yards and two scores, to earn Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Week honors and receive the Bill Knight Trophy as the game s most valuable player. During the game, Peebler caught an 82-yard touchdown pass, good for the longest passing play in school history. Earlier this season, Peebler led the team with a career-high eight receptions for 116 yards and a touchdown against James Madison, UMass in the Rankings UMass vs. Hofstra Football Game Notes The Last Time... Hofstra 31, UMass 28 November 16, 2002 Amherst, Mass. Scoring Summar y 1st 2nd 3rd 4th Total Hofstra UMass R.J. Cobbs rushed 19 times for 89 yards and two touchdowns, but it was not enough as the 19th-ranked Minutemen dropped a tough game to Hofstra at McGuirk Alumni Stadium. UMass controlled the game early, taking a 7-0 lead on a 49-yard pass from Tim Day to Jason Peebler, following an interception by Shannon James. After the Pride put its first points on the board with a 32- yard field goal by Chris Onorato, the Minutemen made it 14-3 early in the second quarter on a 13-yard run by Cobbs. But the Hofstra offense then came to life, scoring the next 21 points in the second and third quarters to take a lead. Ryan Cosentino scored on a one-yard run and hit Isaac Irby with a seven-yard touchdown pass, while Trevor Dimmie added a one-yard touchdown run. But the Minutemen came right back with a one-yard touchdown run by Cobbs, then forced a fumble on the ensuing kickoff to take over at the Hofstra 40-yard line. Nine plays later, Day scored on a five-yard run to put UMass back in front, The Minuteman defense forced the Pride to punt after only three plays, and the ground game appeared to have UMass in position to win. Then on fourth and one at the Hofstra 31, three Pride defenders appeared to jump offsides to give the Minutemen another first down. But when UMass snapped the ball and did not run a play, thinking the whistle had blown, the referees did not throw a flag and awarded the ball to Hofstra on downs. The Pride then went down the field to regain the lead on a three-yard pass from Cosentino to Marques Colston. The Minutemen had one more chance to win, but on second and goal from the Hofstra five, Day was sacked and the clock ran out. Day finished the afternoon hitting on nine of 14 passes for 130 yards and a score, in addition to rushing for a touchdown, while Raunny Rosario added 76 rushing yards on 19 carries. Cosentino led the Pride by completing 34 of 55 passes for 364 yards and two touchdowns with an interception. Mark Kimener led the UMass defense with 12 total tackles, four tackles for loss and two sacks, while Anton McKenzie added 12 tackles and a forced fumble. Daniel Garay had eight tackles with a sack and a fumble recovery for Hofstra. The Minutemen are ranked in all of the major national polls heading into this week s game. Peebler has now totaled 51 career catches for 945 yards and eight scores. Howard led the Minutemen with five receptions for 80 yards and a touchdown in the victory at Maine, and was named the Dinn Brothers UMass Athlete of the Week. He also caught four passes against New Hampshire (22 yards), Kansas State (31 yards) and Central Connecticut State (67 yards, one touchdown), and now has 44 career receptions for 623 yards and seven scores. Both Howard and Peebler are also serving as kickoff returners for the Minutemen in Peebler has totaled 186 yards on nine kickoff returns (20.7 yards/return), while Howard has 148 yards on five returns (29.6 yards/return).

In the victory over James Madison, Baylark ran a career-high 35 times for 140 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Week and the Dinn Brothers UMass Athlete of the Week. Then against New Hampshire, he came back with 111 yards and three scores on 26 carries, to earn Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors for the second week in a row. Earlier this season, Baylark rushed 24 times for 105 yards in the victory at Maine, and 22 times for 141 yards and two touchdowns against Central Connecticut State. He also totaled 77 yards on 21 carries at William & Mary, while rushing for 50 yards on 19 carries at Division I-A Kansas State. On the season, Baylark has now totaled 624 yards and seven scores on 147 carries, in addition to catching 13 passes for 86 yards. A two-time All-Metro and All-Orange County selection by the Orlando Sentinel at Apopka High School, Baylark rushed for 1,445 yards on 147 carries during his senior year in 2001, averaging 9.2 yards per attempt. UMass vs. Hofstra Football Game Notes WHIPPLE CLIMBS UMASS VICTORY CHART: Now in his sixth season as head coach of the Minutemen, Mark Whipple has a mark while on the UMass sideline. With a victory over Hofstra this week, Whipple can move into a tie for second place on the all-time school list for victories. He currently stands one win behind Dick MacPherson, who posted a re c o rd in seven seasons from The school re c o rd for most wins is currently held by Vic Fusia, who posted a mark from Whipple has a career re c o rd of in 16 years as a collegiate head coach, including six seasons at UMass (44-24 / p resent), four years at Brown (24-16 / ) and six seasons at New Haven (48-17 / ). In 2000, Whipple became the first Minuteman coach in 20 years to lead his team to three consecutive winning seasons. The last UMass coach to accomplish the feat was Bob Pickett, who led the Minutemen to four straight winning years from Whipple is also the only coach in school history to win 20 games in his first two seasons. KROHN LEADS THE WAY ON OFFENSE:Now in his second year as the starting quarterback for the Minutemen, senior All- America candidate Jeff Krohn (Phoenix, Ariz.) has been nearly unbeatable during his time at UMass. He owns an 13-3 record in the 16 games he has played, including an 12-1 mark against Division I-AA foes and an 8-0 record at McGurik Alumni Stadium. Last week at William & Mary, Krohn threw for 242 yards and a touchdown on 23 of 32 passing. In the previous game against New Hampshire, he threw for a season-high 295 yards and three scores on 18 of 35 passing, and his 82-yard scoring strike to Jason Peebler was the longest pass in school history. In the win over James Madison, Krohn threw for 214 yards and two touchdowns on 18 of 34 passing, while at Maine, he hit on 15 of 27 passes for 191 yards and two scores. On the year, Krohn has now completed 105 of 182 passes for 1,292 yards and 11 scores. During the 2002 season, Krohn connected on 152 of 287 passes for 2,032 yards and 16 touchdowns, while also leading the team with 1,957 yards of total offense. He placed sixth on the UMass single season list with 2,032 passing yards, which was also the third-highest mark in school history by a junior. Over the course of his UMass career, Krohn now ranks second all-time in completion percentage (.548); third in passing efficiency (124.4); fourth in touchdown passes (27), passing yards (3,324) and completions (257); and sixth in yards per attempt (7.1) and attempts (469). MCKENZIE HAVING ANOTHER BIG YEAR:Fifth-year senior All-America candidate Anton McKenzie (Medford, N.Y.) continues to be one of the top players on the UMass defense from his strong safety spot. In the victory over New Hampshire, McKenzie led the team with 12 total tackles, including a sack and two tackles for loss. Against James Madison, he led the team with 13 total tackles, with two tackles for loss and a pass breakup. In the season opener against Central Connecticut State, McKenzie recorded seven total tackles with one sack, in addition to recovering a fumble and returning it five yards for a touchdown. He also totaled six tackles with one tackle for loss and a forced fumble at Kansas State, while making nine tackles with a tackle for loss and a pass breakup at Maine. On the season, he has now totaled 53 tackles, seven tackles for loss, two sacks and three pass breakups. Last year, McKenzie ranked second on the team with 117 total tackles, including 85 solo stops, nine tackles for loss, four forced fumbles, seven pass breakups and one interception. McKenzie enters this week s game with 267 career total tackles, to go along with 27 tackles for loss, eight forced fumbles and 16 pass breakups. He also has two career interception returns for touchdowns, tying the all-time school record.

The Minutemen have gone 25-8 at home from 1998 to present, improving their all-time re c o rd at McGuirk to Since 1992, UMass has had a losing re c o rd at home only once, while posting a home re c o rd of during that span. The Minutemen also have a mark of 18-5 at McGuirk Stadium against Atlantic 10 Conference opponents under Whipple. EXPERIENCED LINE LEADS WAY FOR OFFENSE: The UMass offensive line has had a solid start in paving the way for the Minuteman offense this season, after returning three starters from last fall. The line has allowed the Minutemen to rush for yards per game on the year, while supplying pass protection to let UMass throw for yards per contest and surrendering only eight sacks through six games. Leading the way is senior guard Carmen Collins (Syracuse, N.Y.) who has now started 35 career games over four seasons. Other Minutemen with a good deal of experience are junior tackle Rob Kane (Londonder ry, N.H.) with 27 career starts and sophomore tackle Colin Stoetzel (Grafton, Mass.) with 13 starts. In addition, redshirt freshman center Alex Miller (Fairfax, Va.) and redshirt freshman guard David Thompson (Norfolk, Va.) have both started the first six games of the 2003 season. Junior tackle O.J. McBride (Sunrise, Fla.), who has eight career starts, is expected to sit out the 2003 season due to injury. UMASS ON THE 18TH: In this week s game against Hofstra, the Minutemen will be playing on October 18 for the 18th time in school history. UMass enters the game with an 8-9 mark on Oct. 18, including a 3-2 mark in home contests and five consecutive victories. The last time the Minutemen played on this date came in 1997, when they posted a victory at Buffalo. The last UMass loss on Oct. 18 came during the 1958 season, when it fall at Rhode Island by a score of UMass first game played on Oct. 18 came during the 1884 season, when it was defeated by Williston Academy. MINUTEMEN NEAR TOP OF NCAA STAT LEADERS: Five Minutemen are currently ranked among the NCAA Division I-AA statistical leaders, through games of Oct. 18. UMass vs. Hofstra Football Game Notes KIMENER SOLID AT LINEBACKER:Senior linebacker Mark Kimener (Oakton, Va.) has developed into one of the top playmakers on the UMass defense, and is off to another strong start this season. Last week at William & Mary, he led the team in total tackles with 14, including one tackle for loss. In the victory over New Hampshire, Kimener ranked second on the team with nine total tackles, while also recording a pass breakup, a tackle for loss and a forced fumble. In the win over James Madison, he made seven total tackles, and also posted his second interception of the season. Previously, Kimener totaled eight tackles with a tackle for loss and a pass breakup at Maine, while making nine total tackles with a tackle for loss and an interception at Kansas State. On the year, he now has 50 total tackles, four tackles for loss, two interceptions and two pass breakups. Last season, Kimener ranked fourth on the team in total tackles with 93, including 16 tackles for loss and four sacks. He also recorded two pass breakups, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and two key interceptions. Kimener was also one of UMass top defensive players in 2001 with 83 tackles, eight tackles for loss and four sacks, and he is the only Minuteman to record over 80 tackles in each of the last two seasons. Entering this week s game, Kimener has career totals of 230 tackles, 28 tackles for loss, eight sacks and five interceptions. BROWER CONTINUES TO SHINE: Senior All-America defensive tackle Valdamar Brower (Florence, Mass.) looks to once again be among the nation s premier defensive linemen in In last week s victory at William & Mary, he recorded 10 total tackles, with a sack and two tackles for loss. The previous week against New Hampshire, Brower made six tackles with two tackles for loss, a sack, a fumble recovery, a pass breakup and two quarterback hurries. On the season, he now has 27 total tackles with five tackles for loss, two sacks and eight quarterback hurries. Last year, while playing through injuries and facing constant double and triple teams, Brower recorded 53 total tackles, including 39 solo stops, 14 tackles for loss, seven sacks, six pass breakups, 16 quarterback hurries and three blocked kicks. At the conclusion of the 2002 season, he was named a second team All-American by Don Hansen s National Weekly Football Gazette, in addition to earning first team All-New England and second team All-Atlantic 10 honors. In 2001, Brower earned All-America honors from The Sports Network, the Associated Press, and Don Hansen s National Weekly Football Gazette, after leading the team and the Atlantic 10 with 10 sacks for 70 yards, to go along with 57 total tackles and 24 tackles for loss. Brower enters this week s game with 24 career sacks, to rank fifth all-time at UMass. MINUTEMEN AGAINST RANKED TEAMS:UMass took on its first Division I-AA ranked opponent on Sept. 20, downing No. 16 Maine on the road. The Minutemen played three games against ranked foes in 2002, defeating No. 2 Maine and No. 4 Villanova 17-16, while falling at No. 18 Nort h e a s t e rn UMass faced four ranked opponents during the 2001 season, defeating No. 15 Rhode Island 24-7, and falling 35-7 at No. 23 Delaware, 36-6 at No. 12 Hofstra and 37-7 at No. 20 Maine. Since the beginning of the 1998 season, UMass now stands against ranked opponents. The Minutemen concluded the 2000 season with a 1-2 re c o rd against ranked opponents, while going 2-3 against ranked teams in 1999 and 6-3 in UMass six victories over ranked opponents in 1998 set a school single season re c o rd. The Minutemen also stand 8-10 against ranked teams at home over the last 10 years, including a 3-8 mark against top 10 teams at home. Prior to last year s back-to-back victories over Maine and Vi l l a n o v a, UMass had lost eight straight home games to top 10 opponents, since a win over No. 7 Delaware on Oct. 23, 1993.

7 HOFSTRA HEAD COACH JOE GARDI: Joe Gardi is in his 14th season at the helm of the Hofstra football program, and owns a overall re c o rd. Under Gardi s guidance, Hofstra made the jump from Division III to I-AA in 1993, and then to the Atlantic 10 Conference in In 2001, Gardi led the Pride to an overall re c o rd of 9-3, a share of the Atlantic 10 title and their fifth p l a y o ff appearance since Hofstra also won the 1999 Lambert Cup as the top team in the East. Before his time at Hofstra, Gard i was the Assistant Supervisor of Officials for the National Football League for five years ( ). In addition, Gardi served as an assistant coach with the New York Jets for nine years. ABOUT THE PRIDE: Hofstra enters this week s game with an overall re c o rd of 1-5 and a 1-3 mark in the Atlantic 10 Conference. The Pride opened the season with five consecutive losses, before posting a victory over Northeastern last week. The Hofstra offense is led by senior tailback Trevor Dimmie, who has rushed 76 times for 332 yards and five touchdowns on the year, while senior wide out Isaac Irby has 24 receptions for 293 yards and a score. 14 UMass vs. Hofstra Football Game Notes 2003 Game-By-Game Recaps Game #1 UMass 51, Central Connecticut State 7 September 6, 2003 Amherst, Mass. Steve Baylark rushed for 141 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries, to lead 12th-ranked UMass to a season-opening 51-7 victory over Central Connecticut State at McGuirk Alumni Stadium. The Minutemen won their season opener for the fourth time in the last five years, while giving head coach Mark Whipple his 40th victory on the UMass sideline. After spotting the Blue Devils an early 7-0 lead, the Minutemen dominated play by scoring 51 unanswered points during the remainder of the contest. Jeff Krohn hit Sean Young with a three-yard touchdown pass to tie the score at 7-7 in the first quarter, then Mike Ziccardi scored on a 30-yard fumble return on the opening play of the second quarter to give UMass the lead for good. Baylark added two touchdowns on runs of one and four yards, while Justin Montgomery also had a seven-yard scoring run. Krohn had a second touchdown pass with a 17-yard strike to Jimmie Howard, while Anton McKenzie scored on a five-yard fumble return and Jeremy Cain posted a safety on a blocked punt. Krohn finished the day 17 of 28 for 186 yards with two scores, as nine different players caught at least on pass. The Minuteman defense allowed only 162 total yards and 12 first downs on the day, while holding the Blue Devils to -2 rushing yards. Steve Costello recorded eight total tackles with a sack and an interception, while Doran Davis had eight tackles with t h ree sacks and a forced fumble. Scott Dolch led Central Connecticut by completing 15 of 29 passes for 164 yards and a score, but he also threw an interception, was sacked seven times and coughed up two fumbles. Darren Sproles rushed 28 times for 152 yards and three touchdowns, to lead Kansas State to a 38-7 victory over 10th-ranked UMass. The Wildcats, who entered the game ranked No. 7 in Division I-A by the Associated Press, were held to a season-low 38 points by the Minuteman defense, which also forced four turnovers. UMass jumped out to an early 7-0 lead on its first possession of the game, when Jeff Krohn hit Jason Peebler with a 65- yard touchdown pass. The Minutemen were still up 7-3 at the end of the first quarter, with Kansas State s only points coming on a 38-yard field goal by Joe Rheem. But the Wildcats took control of the game in the second quarter, scoring 21 unanswered points on two touchdown runs by Sproles and a pass from Jeff Schwinn to Brian Casey. Kansas State concluded the scoring in the second half, with a third quarter touchdown run by Sproles and a fourth quarter scoring run by Dylan Meier. Krohn led the UMass offense by completing 14 of 26 passes for 164 yards and a touchdown, while Steve Baylark rushed for 50 yards on 19 carries. Schwinn completed 17 of 26 passes for 228 yards for the Wildcats, but was also intercepted two times. The Black Bears took an early 2-0 lead on a safety, when Jeff Krohn tripped over the foot of an offensive lineman in the UMass end zone. But the Minutemen responded with a pair of quick touchdowns early in the second quarter, as Krohn tossed scoring strikes of 65 yards to Jimmie Howard and eight yards to Rich Demers. Maine cut the lead to 14-9 on an 11-yard pass from Rob Whitcomb to Christian Pereira, after recovering a fumble deep in UMass territory. But the Minutemen made it 21-9 before halftime, when Steve Costello picked up a fumble and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown. The offenses were held in check for most of the third quarter, until Maine recovered a UMass fumble near midfield. UMass jumped out to an early 7-0 lead on a five-yard touchdown pass from Jeff Krohn to Rich Demers, then increased the lead to 10-0 on a 46-yard field goal by Michael Torres. The Dukes scored their first points in the second quarter on a 21-yard pass from Matt LeZotte to Nic Tolley, but the Minutemen responded with a three-yard scoring pass from Krohn to Jason Peebler late in the period, making the score 17-6 at halftime. Baylark scored his first touchdown with a five-yard run on UMass opening drive of the third quarter, before James Madison found the end zone again on a 13-yard pass from LeZotte to Alan Harrison. The Minutemen then built what looked to be an insurmountable lead early in the fourth quarter on a one-yard run by Baylark, before the Dukes mounted a comeback. UMass took the game s opening kickoff and marched right down the field, with Demers scoring on a one-yard run to cap a 12-play, 79-yard drive. The Minutemen increased the lead to 10-0 later in the first quarter on a 29-yard field goal by Michael Torres. Neither team scored any points in the second period, with UMass turning the ball over twice in Tribe territory. The Minutemen increased their lead to 17-0 on their opening drive of the second half, as Demers scored his second touchdown on a one-yard run.
