THE SERIES WITH RICHMOND: UMass holds an 11-8 lead in the all-time series against the Spiders which began in The series is tied 4-4 in games played at McGuirk Stadium, but the Spiders have won the last three consecutive games in Amherst. Richmond head coach Jim Reid served at the helm of the Minutemen for six years ( ) and posted a record. Since that time he has gone 4-4 against his former mates, while UMass Mark Whipple is 3-2 all-time against the Spiders. UMass and Richmond also met for the first game in Atlantic 10 Football Conference history on Aug. 30, 1997, with Richmond posting a 21-6 win in Amherst. (A complete breakdown of the series can be found on page 112 of the UMass football media guide, while scores from each game are located on page 116). MINUTEMEN CONTINUE FAST STAR T: UMass has started the 2003 season with an 8-1 record, its best mark through nine games since This season marks just the seventh time UMass has recorded eight wins in its first nine games as it has started two times (1963, 1990), and 8-1 on five occasions (1901, 1964, 1975, 1977, 2003). In addition, the Minutemen are 6-0 in Atlantic 10 games so far this year, their best start in league play since the 1990 team, under the direction of then head coach Jim Reid, began Yankee Conference play with seven straight conference wins. SEVENTHHEAVEN: UMass has won seven consecutive contests entering the Northeastern game, one shy of the school record for consecutive wins, eight, which has been accomplished five times. The first streak began when the 1963 team won its final seven games, and ended with a victory over Maine in the 1964 season opener. The 1975 squad matched the record by winning its first eight games of the year, while the 1977 team posted an eight-game winning streak after losing its season opener to Army. The 1990 team won eight straight following a season-opening tie at Holy Cross, while the 1999 squad won eight in a row after opening the year 1-3. DEFENSE IMPRESSIVE AGAINST THE RUN:The UMass defense has been outstanding against the run this season, ranking 13th in the nation by allowing opponents to average only 98.9 yards per game on the ground. The Minutemen have allowed a total of 890 yards and nine touchdowns through nine games this season, but 235 of those yards and four of the scores came against Division I-A Kansas State. In games against Division I-AA opponents, UMass has given up only 655 yards and five touchdowns on 277 carries, for averages of 81.9 yards per game and 2.4 yards per carry. The Minutemen have also shut down two of the Atlantic 10 Conference s top running backs, holding Maine s Marcus Williams (115.2 ypg) to 67 yards on 17 carries and James Madison s Alvin Banks (94.4 ypg) to seven yards on four carries. In the Villanova game, the Wildcats entered averaging ypg and were held to just 97 yards. A T H L E T I C S W E B S I T E : W W W. U M A S S A T H L E T I C S. C O M

2 NINE ISFINE: With a victory over Richmond this week, UMass can improve its overall record to 9-1 on the season, and tie the records for the second-most victories in school history, and the most regular season wins in school history. The mark for most wins during the regular season is currently shared by the 1901 team, which went 9-1, and the 1993 Minutemen, who had a 9-2 mark (including a forfeit victory over Maine). In addition to the 1901, 1993 and 1998 seasons, UMass has recorded nine or more total victories only three other times: 1972 (9-2), in 1978 (9-4) and 1999 (9-3). KROHN LEADS THE WAY ON OFFENSE:Now in his second year as the starting quarterback for the Minutemen, senior All- America candidate Jeff Krohn (Phoenix, Ariz.) has been nearly unbeatable during his time at UMass.
