(AP) New York Jets center Nick Mangold has been added to the Pro Bowl roster as a replacement for the injured Mike Pouncey of the Miami Dolphins. It will be the seventh Pro Bowl appearance for Mangold, who was chosen as a first alternate when rosters for the game to be played Jan. 31 in Hawaii were announced on Dec. 22. Mangold is one behind the franchise record by offensive tackle Winston Hill, who played in four AFL All-Star games and four Pro Bowls. Pouncey missed the Dolphins' final two games with a foot injury. 1 P a g e

Mangold is the fourth Jets player selected, joining wide receiver Brandon Marshall, cornerback Darrelle Revis and defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson, who isn't expected to play after breaking his right leg last Sunday. NEWSDAY Mike Westhoff says Jets firing of Bobby April was cowardice (Kimberley A. Martin) Newsday Forget about that Mike Westhoff reunion, Jets fans. A day after the organization fired special-teams coordinator Bobby April after one season, the former assistant coach expressed zero interest in returning to the Jets sideline. No, I don t. I really don t, Westhoff said Thursday during an ESPN New York radio interview. I told a general manager who offered me a job two years ago... Forget it, I m not coming back. Thanks for asking. Since Westhoff retired as their special-teams coordinator after the 2012 season, the Jets have hired and fired three replacements: Ben Kotwica, Thomas McGaughey and April. On Thursday, Westhoff took a shot at the Jets for using April as a scapegoat. I don t like the fact that only after one year you would fire Bobby April, he said. I know him, but it s not like this is a friend of mine. I m very disappointed in the fact that happened. Frankly, I ll tell you exactly how I feel. I think it s cowardice. And that s a one-word synonym for the two-word phrase I really think. The Jets special teams played poorly this season, allowing four touchdowns. Punt returner Jeremy Kerley made few big plays. Asked earlier this week if he was disappointed by the unit s performance, coach Todd Bowles said, At times. I mean, the returns, yes. We have to make tackles here and there. Sometimes, we have to make plays. We didn t make enough plays sometimes with the defense, sometimes with the offense, sometimes with the special teams. However, Westhoff noted that the organization failed to give April much to work with, in particular the return specialists. The TV-radio analyst also said the Jets had other issues, namely on defense, that contributed to some of their key losses. You can t let Buffalo beat you twice, guys, if you think you re good enough to play in the playoffs. You can t do that, Westhoff said. But anyways, what [April s firing] says to me is: Well, we ve got to blame somebody. So, let s blame these guys. Yes, they did have a tough year. It wasn t a good year. But nonetheless, they made tremendous moves as a staff when they came in and how they fortified this football team... They made a lot of moves and they did a good job. But they didn t do anything with special teams. They did nothing. Zero. So why would you think it d be that good? Maybe if there were some things we don t know, maybe some mandates that they asked and didn t get done. Well, then I understand that. But you know, you gave the guy a chance, you gave him one year and you didn t do anything to help him out. What makes you think all of a sudden they re going to be pretty good? It s not going to happen. Notes & quotes: Nick Mangold, who was voted a Pro Bowl alternate, will replace injured Dolphins center Mike Pouncey in the game... The Jets signed defensive back Kendall James to a reserve/future contract. 2 P a g e

NEW YORK TIMES Todd Bowles Makes Changes to Jets Coaching Staff (Ben Shpigel) New York Times Todd Bowles expressed his dissatisfaction with the Jets poor special teams this season by firing the unit s two coaches. Gone are Bobby April, who spent one season in charge, and his assistant, Steve Hagen, who had previously worked with the team s tight ends. The Jets also fired Ron Heller, who finished his third season as the team s assistant offensive line coach. Heller and Hagen were the lone holdovers from Rex Ryan s coaching staff. The changes came two days after Bowles, when asked at his season-ending news conference, said he expected his staff to remain intact. April and Hagen presided over a unit that was directly responsible for four touchdowns by the opposition two punt returns, a blocked punt and a fumbled kickoff and struggled in all facets of punt coverage. Punter Ryan Quigley, whose shank Sunday at Buffalo resulted in excellent field position that led to the Bills first touchdown, ranked 31st in net punting. April s departure means that the Jets will now search for a fourth. 3 P a g e

ESPN NEW YORK James Carpenter, Ryan Fitzpatrick among Jets who came up big (Rich Cimini) ESPN New York As part of our season-ending coverage of the New York Jets, we'll take a look at five players who exceeded expectations: James Carpenter, left guard: There was some skepticism in scouting circles when the Jets gave Carpenter a four-year, $19 million contract last offseason, but it turned out to be a terrific free-agent signing. Carpenter was arguably the Jets' best offensive lineman, flourishing in their man blocking scheme. He embraced the change after four years in the Seattle Seahawks' zone scheme. Ryan Fitzpatrick, quarterback: He arrived as a backup, coming off a broken leg, and he wound up setting career highs in passing yards (3,905) and touchdowns (31). He finished 12th in Total QBR (63.6) and 24th in passer rating (88.0). By NFL standards, it was hardly an off-the-charts season. By the Jets' standards, he was the best thing since Chad Pennington, showing mature leadership and a firm grasp of the offense and locker-room dynamics. Brandon Marshall, wide receiver: You knew when he arrived last March the Jets were getting a talented, highly-motivated player, but be honest: Did anybody expect 109 catches, 1,502 yards and 14 touchdowns? Gaudy numbers aside, Marshall was a good teammate, according to coaches and teammates. That may have been the biggest development of them all, considering his past issues. Bilal Powell, running back: Powell proved himself as a workmanlike player over his first four seasons, your basic jack-of-all-trades, but master of none. This season, he took it to a new level as a third-down back, finishing with career highs for receptions (47) and receiving yards (388). He became an integral player down the stretch, and his absence was glaring in the season-ending loss. Marcus Williams, cornerback: The former undrafted free agent finished with a team-high six interceptions. It's an impressive total by any measure, but it's mind-boggling when you consider he played only 277 defensive snaps (26 percent). What can you say? He's an instinctive player with a nose for the ball. He was quite a find last year. NEW YORK POST Revis Island? Maybe not, but only two WRs gave Darrelle fits (Brian Costello) New York Post January 8, When the Jets signed Darrelle Revis to a five-year, $70 million deal last March, it created a buzz around the team and optimism around the secondary to see one of the best cornerbacks in football return to the team that drafted him. 4 P a g e

There were moments in his first year back with the Jets, including last week s game with the Bills, that caused concern among fans that maybe Revis was not the player he once was and not worth the $39 million guaranteed the Jets were giving him over the first three years of the deal. But a closer look at Revis season shows a 30-year-old cornerback who is still very, very good and still one of the best at his position. He had two rough games out of the 14 he played this year and those were against two of the best young receivers in the NFL the Bills Sammy Watkins and DeAndre Hopkins of the Texans. Watkins (six catches, 96 yards against Revis, according to Pro Football Focus) and Hopkins (five catches, 114 yards) accounted for 36 percent of the 583 yards he gave up this year. The two young receivers from Clemson are precisely the type of receivers that give Revis trouble and can beat him deep. They are quick receivers with great change-of-direction skills. This is a matchup problem for Revis. When Revis is up against a bigger receiver like Dez Bryant or Calvin Johnson, his physicality can still neutralize them. There were a few more instances of where the wide receiver was winning more than they did in the past, but Revis still had his moments of wins, too, a scout said. He just had a few more losses this year when he was always winning in the past. Revis gave up just three touchdowns this year. One was a 61-yarder to Hopkins. The other two were short scores by Bryant against the Cowboys and Pierre Garcon of the Redskins. Pro Football Focus had receivers catching only 46.5 percent of the passes thrown their way when Revis was covering them, the lowest percentage among cornerbacks. They also have quarterbacks with the third-worst rating when throwing in Revis direction. Only the Panthers Josh Norman and Rams Trumaine Johnson had lower ratings. He s still a very good starter, the scout said. Maybe he s gone from elite to the very-good level. There are signs potentially pointing that he has gone from the league s best cornerback to maybe the next group of quality starters below that, which is still very good company. Some may question whether the Jets overpaid for Revis by making him the highest-paid cornerback in football if he is no longer the best at the position. They paid him $16 million last season and will pay him $17 million in It is a fair question, but Revis impact on the Jets cannot be measured simply by what he does on the field. The Jets desperately needed credibility when they signed Revis, and he instantly gave it to them. They had a star on the team again. He also fixed a position that had become a black hole on the team in 2014, John Idzik s final year as general manager. The Jets also needed to spend the money because of league rules when it comes to using cap space. Because Idzik had pinched pennies the year before, his successor Mike Maccagnan was required to spend nearly all of the $50 million in cap space he had to reach the minimum required. Revis was the best free agent on the market and the Jets, coming off a 4-12 season, landed him. It was going to require overpaying him to do it. Picking apart Revis became trendy this season, but even at 30 he is still one of the best in the league. The Jets coaches may have to give Revis more safety help against receivers like Watkins and Hopkins and forget about the idea of Revis Island, but there is no shame in that. Falcons special teams coordinator Keith Armstrong is believed to be the front-runner to replace Bobby April with the Jets in the same role. Armstrong and Jets coach Todd Bowles were teammates at Temple. 5 P a g e

The Jets requested permission to interview Armstrong last year, but were denied. The Atlanta Journal- Constitution reported Armstrong s contract is believed to be expiring this month. Jets center Nick Mangold will replace Miami s Mike Pouncey, who is injured, at the Pro Bowl. NJ ADVANCE MEDIA Jets' Nick Mangold is going to the Pro Bowl after all (Darryl Slater) NJ Advance Media ml#incart_river_index Jets center Nick Mangold wasn't voted into the Pro Bowl this season, but he is going anyway. That's because Dolphins center Mike Pouncey is hurt and won't make the trip to Hawaii. Pouncey missed the season's final two games due to a foot injury. This makes seven career Pro Bowls for Mangold (also and ) in his 10-year career. While Mangold was voted as a first alternate this year, along with running back Chris Ivory, three other Jets were voted into the game: wide receiver Brandon Marshall, cornerback Darrelle Revis, and defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson. But Wilkerson won't be able to play, because he broke his leg in the Jets' season finale. Wilkerson underwent surgery Wednesday. The Jets' record for most Pro Bowls belongs to offensive tackle Winston Hill, who made it eight times, with four trips coming when the Jets played in the AFL. Mangold had been tied with Kevin Mawae for most Pro Bowl appearances by a Jets center. That record now belongs exclusively to Mangold. The Pro Bowl will be held Jan. 31 in Honolulu. First possible candidate for Jets special teams coordinator emerges (Dom Cosentino) NJ Advance Media ncart_river_index With Bobby April out after just one season as special teams coordinator, the Jets and head coach Todd Bowles must turn their attention toward finding a replacement. As the Atlanta Journal-Constitution pointed out on Thursday, there's an obvious candidate out there: Falcons special teams coordinator Keith Armstrong. Bowles and Armstrong go way back. They were teammates at Temple University under Bruce Arians, the current Cardinals coach. And last year, Bowles tried to interview Armstrong for a job on his staff, only to have the Falcons deny permission. 6 P a g e

Armstrong, 52, is a Trenton native. He's been an NFL assistant coach since 1994, first as a safeties and secondary coach with the Falcons and later as a special teams coordinator for the Bears and Dolphins. He's been in his current role with the Falcons since And, as the Journal-Constitution noted, Armstrong's contract is about to expire. Which means the Falcons wouldn't be able to stop him if Bowles were to come calling again. Football Outsiders ranked the Falcons' special teams 22nd in DVOA in The Jets were 25th. The Jets fired April, assistant special teams coach Steve Hagen, and assistant offensive line coach Ron Heller on Wednesday, three days after the team's season ended at 10-6 with a loss at the Bills that ended their playoff hopes. Forget about Mike Westhoff returning as Jets' special teams coordinator, says Mike Westhoff (Darryl Slater) NJ Advance Media #incart_river_index Well, you can forget about Mike Westhoff perhaps returning as the Jets' next special teams coordinator. (Though it's not clear if this was ever a serious option for coach Todd Bowles, who fired Bobby April on Wednesday.) Here was Westhoff on Thursday, on ESPN New York radio: Westhoff, a special teams coaching pioneer, is happy being retired from coaching and doing some TV and radio analyst work, on the Jets and the NFL. He turns 68 Sunday, and hasn't coached since 2012 with the Jets. Westhoff coordinated the Jets' special teams from Before that, he was with the Dolphins, as a special teams coach, from Westhoff decided to retire after the 2012 season. In 2013, the Jets turned to Ben Kotwica, Westhoff's assistant, as his replacement. When Kotwica left for Washington, the Jets replaced him with Thomas McGaughey, who then lost his job in the coaching regime change after the 2014 season. Bowles hired April, a longtime special teams coach, to replace McGaughey this season. But the Jets' special teams struggled mightily, and April was canned. 7 P a g e

Also turfed Thursday by Bowles were assistant special teams coach Steve Hagen and assistant offensive line coach Ron Heller the lone holdovers from the Rex Ryan era. In 2016, the Jets will have their fifth special teams coordinator in as many seasons. Every Jets fan should read this Jets fan's take on the 2015 season (Dom Cosentino) NJ Advance Media ncart_river_index Jets fans, How many of you are still trying to process the events from Sunday, when the Jets choked up what had been a promising season by losing at the Bills, who happen to be coached by (oh, no, really?) Rex Ryan? It was just so Jets, wasn't it? After a 5-5 start, the Jets basically needed to win the their last six games to have even a crack at the playoffs. And for five games in a row, they took care of business, coming back from 10 points down in the fourth quarter to stick it to the fancypants Giants, rising above a dreadful three quarters to hold off a lousy Cowboys team, and finally making MetLife Stadium quake with a riveting overtime triumph against the stupid Patriots. Heck, even Ryan Fitzpatrick Ryan Fitzpatrick! had all the makings of a late-blooming franchise quarterback for a while there. (You've all heard about franchise quarterbacks, haven't you? They're not unicorns, I swear.) And then, with Ryan, their former coach, the only thing standing in the way of the Jets' first playoff appearance in five years, all that goodwill the Jets had stored up with you quickly vanished. The Jets not only decided to throw a lot in windy conditions, but they also used Stevan Ridley instead of Chris Ivory as their primary running back. They strangely had cornerback Darrelle Revis play soft coverage on wideout Sammy Watkins, the depleted Bills' only legitimate offensive threat. And Fitzpatrick saved his worst for last, a final indignity that has led some to doubt whether he ought to be the starter going forward. (He should.) The temptation for any Jets fan is to draw a straight line from Richard Todd's five interceptions in the mud in Miami to Leon Johnson's picked halfback pass in Detroit to Doug Brien's missed field goals in Pittsburgh to the Tim Tebow Game in Denver to Sunday's faceplant in Buffalo. You know, just another kick in the pants for you from the Same Old Jets. But take solace. Get off the ledge, come in from the cold, grab a coffee (or something stronger, if you're into that kind of thing in the late morning), and sit down. Do yourself a favor, and read Joe Caporoso's guest column on all this over at The MMQB. Caporoso is the editor-in-chief of Turn on the Jets, and he's got a sensical dose of reality for you to consider as you contemplate taking scissors to your Jeremy Kerley jersey and brooding in a dark room for the next eight months. A sampling: I don't doubt that if the Jets had won that game but then went on to lose the following week in Cincinnati, that would have been classified as a [Same Old Jets] loss as well. Basically any loss that ended the season would have been classified as such. It is why I find it pointless to watch the team through that lens. Wallowing in perpetual misery isn't a way to consume a sport... unless you are a Browns fan. 8 P a g e

Caporoso goes on to elucidate how quickly the Jets improved from 2014's 4-12 garbage barge to '15's 10-6 near miss. It wasn't enough, obviously, and the Jets' front office has its work cut out for it in the months ahead. But there does seem to be a stable foundation being built, as our man Darryl Slater articulated the other day, too. Read the rest of Caporoso's column here. And hang in there. It's not all doom and gloom. Sincerely, An objective observer Jets' Leonard Williams named Defensive Rookie of Year by Mel Kiper Jr. (Darryl Slater) NJ Advance Media l#incart_river_index Jets defensive end Leonard Williams had a strong rookie year in On Thursday, he was rewarded for it, by being named the NFL's Defensive Rookie of the Year... by ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. No word on if Kiper will mail Williams a bronzed pompadour as a trophy. Kiper gave Williams the award as part of his all-rookie team. Tampa Bay quarterback Jameis Winston won the Offensive Rookie of the Year award. Williams was the only Jets player on Kiper's all-rookie team. The other defensive end who made it: the Raiders' Mario Edwards Jr. Kiper also considered Bills cornerback Ronald Darby and Chiefs corner Marcus Peters for Defensive Rookie of the Year. In the end, here is why he chose Williams: He played nearly 800 snaps, was outstanding against the run, helped free up teammates to rush the passer, and actually did some great work in pushing the pocket himself. You really have to watch Williams on every snap because stats won't do him justice. I had him as the No. 1 overall player in the 2015 NFL draft, and I think he lived up to that. And yes, he was a total steal at No. 6 for New York. Great work by that front office. The Jets indeed drafted Williams sixth last spring, after he fell into their laps. Nobody expected him to fall that far. It was a no-brainer pick for the Jets, and general manager Mike Maccagnan hasn't claimed any scouting wizardry for making it, since he said it was an easy choice best player available and all that. Williams finished the season with three sacks. He played extensively in the first four games, starting in place of the suspended Sheldon Richardson (marijuana). But Williams wasn't an every-down player all year. The Jets' coaches wanted to see him improve his pass rushing technique, and the use his of his hands, before they played him more on third downs. He improved in those areas later in the season, and wound up getting more third-down action. Pro Football Focus rated Williams seventh among 3-4 defensive ends, including 13th as a pass rusher and fourth against the run. Even though he didn't play as many snaps as other top 3-4 ends, Williams ranked third at his position with 19 quarterback hits. He also had the 13th-most hurries (27). 9 P a g e

It's pretty clear that Williams has a bright future in the NFL. He fit in just fine with the Jets' top defensive ends, Richardson and Muhammad Wilkerson. Thursday wasn't the first time Kiper honored Williams. In early October, after Week 4, Kiper named Williams the league's top overall rookie to that point. NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Jets special teams coordinator likely to be Falcons Keith Armstrong (Seth Walder) New York Daily News The candidate likely to replace former special teams coordinator Bobby April is one of Todd Bowles old college teammates: Falcons special teams coordinator Keith Armstrong. Bowles tried to hire Armstrong a year ago, but he was still under contract with the Falcons. A source told the Daily News that Bowles now wants to bring a friend onboard that he couldn t get last year making Armstrong the obvious favorite to land the job. According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Armstrong s contract with the Falcons is believed to be up soon. Bowles and Armstrong were teammates together for three seasons at Temple under Bruce Arians. Armstrong has coached the Falcons special teams since 2008 and interviewed for the team s head coaching position a year ago. He coached special teams for the Dolphins from and with the Bears from The Falcons ranked fourth in kickoff return average and 11th in punt return average in However, they also ranked 31st in average kickoff return yards and 21st in average punt yards allowed. The Jets fired April on Wednesday despite Bowles originally saying on Monday that he anticipated his entire staff returning in However, April was always a candidate to be let go after the Jets were particularly poor on special teams four touchdowns allowed in Nick Mangold is headed to the Pro Bowl.
