(GSU Sports Arena) Media Relations Contact: Charlie Taylor - CTaylor@gsu.edu PANTHERS SEEKING THE WIN COLUMN Georgia State is still seeking its elusive first win of the year. Four times this season, the Panthers have had second-half leads but have been unable to hold those leads and dropped all four of those games. They have lost leads of 13, 12 and 14 points in the last three games, respectively. The Panthers defense has allowed 76.6 points per game and been in a rebound deficit ( ). Belmont holds a 7-4 series lead with six wins in Nashville. Georgia State owns a 4-1 series lead in Atlanta. On Dec. 13 last year, Belmont pulled away from a lead with 14 minutes left in the second half, when Belmont netted 14 straight points to open a advantage. GSU came off an 11-day layoff and four-game win streak, but shot just 39% in Nashville. Belmont was coming off a win over Indiana and sizzled with 9-of-15 3-point baskets (60%) and 18-of-22 free throws (81.8%). Molly Ernst was the star with 7-of-10 treys and 23 points. ROAd hogs Georgia State started the season with four road games of the first five. The Panthers return home for one busy week with games on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Georgia State will go from Dec. 1 to Jan. 1 without a home game. They ll go north to Ohio and as far west as California for a two-game swing. That makes eight of the 11 non-conference games on the road. PROBABLE STARTERS (Note: Line-up changes often) Pos. No. Name...Ht. Cl. Sun Belt Conference President...Mark P. Becker Athletics Director...Cheryl L. Levick BASKETBALL HISTORY First Season of NCAA Basketball All-Time NCAA Record /39th year NCAA Tournament Appearances.. 4 (1981, 2001, 2002, 2003) NIT Appearances...1 (2000) Conference Titles...4 (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003) SUN BELT HISTORY Georgia State was one of the six founding members of the Sun Belt Conference in Women s basketball was still under the AIAW and not the NCAA at that time, so the Sun Belt teams did not play conference schedules or have a conference tournament. But, the Sun Belt teams did schedule one another in and again in before Georgia State left the league after five years. 17 INCHES APART, BUT AT THE SAME LEVEL Georgia State will be counting on peak performances this year from a pair who are the most visible on the court. Point guard Alisha Andrews towers over the little basketball at 4-foot-11, proving to be the catalyst for her teams, whether on offense or defense. Seventeen inches up the tape, center Brittany Logan stalks the paint at 6-foot-4 and a wide body to crash the boards and drive to the hoop. But, right now they are both re-adjusting to the speed and stamina of Division I basketball as neither played last season. Andrews, a two-time All-CAA star came to GSU with 751 points and point baskets. So, she had to sit out the transfer year. She went 20 months and well over 600 days from her last game at UNCW on March 15, 2013 to GSU s opener this month on Nov. 8. Logan, an honorable mention NJCAA star at Georgia Perimeter, also went those 20 months and more than 600 days without a game. She stayed at Georgia Perimeter to finish her degree to become eligible for Division I ball. So the pair are getting their game back slowly but surely QUICK NOTES Sophomore guard Gaby Moss leads the Sun Belt Conference in 3-point shooting percentage (.583), making 7-of-12 shots. Point guard Alisha Andrews had 10 assists Saturday at Western Carolina and her 29 (5.8 per game) are second in the Sun Belt this year. Andrews is tied with teammate Kendra Long for fifth in the Sun Belt in steals (2.0 pg). Center Brittany Logan is No. 4 in the Sun Belt in FG percentage, shooting 59.3% from the field (16 of 27). She s No. 5 in rebounding (7.8 per game). Logan has one double-double game with 14 points, 12 rebounds in her only game in the GSU Sports Arena (UCF). Whistles are driving GSU players crazy. In five games, Georgia State has been whistled for 135 fouls, an average 27 called per game. That s 20 more than called on the opponents. Five times a Panther has fouled out this year. No opponent has fouled out. Eight players have been called for 10 or more fouls in the five games, topped by point guard Alisha Andrews 19 illegal touches. Three Panthers are still perfect from the free throw line this year (Mariam Hannoun 6-for-6, Morgan Jackson 3-for-3 and Alisha Andrews 2-for-2). Miranda Smith is at 81.8% on 9-of-11 and Gaby Moss is 80% (4-of- 5). Kendra Long sits at 76.5% with 13 of 17 made free throws. The Panthers roster includes seven upperclassmen (one senior, six juniors) and seven underclassmen (three sophomores, four freshmen). GSU s backcourt includes Long and Andrews, a local Atlanta pair who first teammed as nine-year olds in club basketball. They went to different high schools and different colleges until Andrews transferred to Georgia State. In its first year in the Sun Belt, Georgia State will play 18 conference games, two each against the nine other opponents. League play starts just hours into the 2014 New Year when Troy comes to Atlanta for a 2 p.m. game on New Year s Day, just 14 hours into the year. Georgia State s Thanksgiving Tournament this year will include another OVC team (Jacksonville State), an Atlantic 10 team that just upset No.10 California (George Washington) and a top 25 SEC team (Georgia).

6 Coach SHARON BALDWIN-TENER Sharon Baldwin-Tener, named GSU s head coach in April of 2010, has known how to win as both a collegiate player and collegiate coach. Now in her fourth season at GSU, the recruiting has shown some pieces are in place for a solid future. She picked up her 200th career win as a head coach on Dec. 29, 2010 vs. Mississippi Valley State (91-65) and guided GSU to the 500th all-time win in school history on Jan. 9, 2011 in a win over Hofstra (84-70) In eight years, she turned the East Carolina women s basketball program around, winning 126 games, while earning postseason bids to the NCAA and WNIT tournaments. The Lady Pirates of ECU won the C-USA Tournament in Atlanta is a homecoming for Baldwin-Tener as she played her prep ball in Smyrna and her college ball at both Kennesaw State and the University of Georgia. She was an assistant coach at Georgia and a head coach at Life University in Marietta Those eight years at ECU followed her season as the Atlantic Sun Conference Coach of the Year honor in her only season at Mercer University in Macon. She first gained notice as the NAIA National Coach of the Year at Life University, where she began that program with a final No. 7 ranking in its first year and produced a team ranked No. 1 in the national polls in her second season (2001). Her assistant coaching career was highlighted by being named the Naismith National Assistant Coach of the Year (1997) while she was in her seventh and final year at the University of Georgia under head coach Andy Landers. Baldwin-Tener enjoyed a successful playing career at both the high school and collegiate levels. At Wills High School (merged with Campbell High) in Smyrna, Ga., she averaged 21 points per contest as a senior and was named the 1985 Georgia Class 4A State Player-of-the-Year. Baldwin-Tener earned a bachelor s degree from Georgia in 1991 and completed her master s of education in 1997, also at Georgia. She and her husband, Matt, have two children: Luke (9, Feb. 4, 2004) and Samantha (8, Oct. 28, 2005). In her first three years at GSU, she became the only player in school history with three 50 or more 3-point baskets-made seasons. Her point baskets made has already moved her into first place on the school s all-time list. Long made six treys in a game vs. Towson on Feb. 14, 2013 and has made five 3-point shots in a game five times, so she is obviously a marked target for opposing defenses. She has 48 double-figure scoring games. Long has scored 935 points in three years, needing just 65 more to become the 21st 1,000-point scorer in GSU history. She has played in 95 games, needing 26 more games to tie the all-time school record. Long has started 79 games, meaning she should become the seventh player in school history to start 100 games. The was the fifth time in school history that GSU had made 10 3-point baskets in a game. The Panthers made 11-of-24 treys with Moss and Andrews each knocking down four 3-pointers. The best 3-point percentage for a game in was.529 vs. Towson on 9-of-17 as Kendra Long led the way with her 6-of-10. With the group of 3-point shooters on this year s team, a steady watch on this record will be kept.

7 WATSON SETS FT RECORD Sophomore Ashley Watson finished by making 19 straight free throws over eight games to establish a new single-season record for best free throw percentage of.875. Watson had 12 games during the season where she was 100% when she shot two or more free throws. She made 8-of-9 (.889) and 12-of-14 (.857) for most made in a game. Watson has made 110-of-131 shots for a three-year mark of.847, that leads the career shooting percentage list. Marica Maddox made 224-of-272 (.824) over her four years to hold the current career mark. Kelcey Roegiers- Jensen is second with a.785 mark on 266-of-339. LOUISIANA-LAFAYETTE... at UT Arlington... at Texas State WESTERN KENTUCKY SMALL IN SIZE, LARGE IN RESULTS Junior point guard Alisha Andrews may be only 4-foot-11 in size, but she is one of the largest producers on the basketball court. After sitting her transfer year from UNCW, Andrews plays her first season at Georgia State. Andrews becomes the smallest player in the Sun Belt with South Alabama s Brittany Webb at 5-foot-2 and Texas State s Ayriel Anderson at 5-foot-3 on the roster. Research continues from NCAA rosters, but Andrews is shorter than any players in these 16 conferences: ACC, A-Sun, Big Sky, Big Ten, Big 12, CAA, C-USA, MVC, Moutain West. OVC, Pac-12, Patriot, SEC, SoCon, Sun Belt or West Coast conferences. Think she s a defensive liability? Evidently not as she was voted to the CAA All-Defensive Team her two years at UNCW. Her pesky-quick hands force team turnovers galore and she has 186 steals in two seasons. Think she can t score? As the newcomer in her first two years adjusting to college basketball, she scored 776 points (11.2). Naturally, she finds the open 3-pointer and knocks them down with 137 in her career. A driver and penetrator, she s made 343 assists in drawing the post players to her and she finds the open teammate. Or, the post players foul her and she knocks down 73.5% of her 134 free throws. Think she isn t tough? Her preference is to play all 40 minutes, but she has averaged 35 minutes a game in her career when the coach makes her take a quick break. 11 Georgia State Begins Sun Belt Season After more than a year s worth of anticipation, the wait was finally over. On July 1, 2012, the Georgia State Athletic Department officially became a member of the Sun Belt Conference and on July 1, 2013, all sports became eligible for championships in 14 league-sponsored sports. Basketball joins the mix in November and will compete in the Sun Belt tournament in March in New Orleans. The men s team was a charter member in 1976; the women make their debut in We look forward to playing a leadership role in the Sun Belt Conference and our teams competing for Sun Belt titles and postseason berths, Director of Athletics Cheryl L. Levick said. It really is a tremendous day in Georgia State sports history. GSU s move onto a national stage in all sports officially began on April 9, At a press conference inside the Georgia Dome, Sun Belt Conference officials joined Georgia State President Mark Becker and Levick at the public announcement of the Panthers impending conference move. A feasibility study begun in the fall of 2011 concluded the Panthers were well positioned to make the jump to the FBS level and that the Sun Belt would be an ideal fit. The rest has been history. The move now allows GSU to build on regional rivalries with several schools within driving distance, while also showcasing its talented teams to the country. It is a return home of sorts for Georgia State, which was a founding member of the Sun Belt Conference in At that time, the league consisted of six universities playing across four men s sports basketball, soccer, tennis and golf. Women s sports did not compete in the Sun Belt or NCAA at that time. Today, the Sun Belt Conference sponsors 18 sports, including 14 that the Panthers will vie for conference titles. On the men s side, GSU will compete in baseball, basketball, football, golf and tennis, while women s sports include basketball, golf, cross country, soccer, softball, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and court volleyball. GSU has also announced plans to add women s swimming and diving, another Sun Belt-sponsored sport. The Panthers already own two Sun Belt Conference titles in the past year. Ten individual sports were accepted into the league for , giving the women s cross country and men s tennis teams a leg up on collecting hardware. Each squad won the Sun Belt title and helped Georgia State finish ahead of two SBC schools in the Vic Bubas Cup standings (an all sports trophy) despite competing in only half of the league s sports. Sun Belt TOURNAMENT IN NEW ORLEANS The Sun Belt Tournament will be held at Lakefront Arena in New Orleans with both the women s and men s teams competing the same week of March Photo courtesy Frank Aymami
