INSIDE Outlook Roster Preseason Depth Chart Red Wolves at a Glance
2008 Season Preview At first glance it appears the 2008 Arkansas State football team lost a lot of firepower at some key positions, but the Red Wolves also return proven players at key positions and a deeper look at the squad reveals there are capable and experienced standouts ready to step in and fill some of the holes left by the departure of the 2007 senior class. While the Red Wolves are faced with the challenge of replacing their entire starting secondary and four starters along the offensive line, they return 17 starters that include several All-Sun Belt Conference selections, signed another strong recruiting class that is expected to make an immediate impact at a few positions and also bring back a number of players that saw extended action last season as reserves. ASU finished the 2007 campaign with a 5-7 record, but claimed victories over nonconference opponents such as Memphis and SMU and took both New Orleans Bowl champion Florida Atlantic and nationalpowerhouse Texas deep into the fourth quarter before falling by a combined 11 points. With Davey O Brien semifinalist Corey Leonard, 2008 Rotary Lombardi preliminary candidate Matt Mandich, two-time All-Sun Belt running back Reggie Arnold, and five of its top six leading receivers back, ASU has a talented offense that will present challenges for any defense. ASU will have a number of talented freshmen in its fall camp, but also had Corey Leonard, QB the services of junior college wide receivers Taylor Clements and Jahbari McLennan during spring practices. The Red Wolves also added three junior-college transfers to their roster that could help on the offensive line. Expectations for the defense are high as well despite losing six starters. The Red Wolves defense will benefit from the leadership provided by senior defensive end Brian Flagg and senior middle linebacker Ben Owens, while also receiving a lift from the return of All-Sun Belt Conference defensive end Alex Carrington. The defense will be looking for possible breakout performances from players such as defensive linemen Khari Mays and Bryan Hall, linebackers Javon McKinnon and Darious Glover, safeties M.D. Jennings and Evan Van Dolah and corners Daylan Walker and Dominique Williams, all of whom experienced success in back-up roles last season. ASU returns its leading players on special teams, including All-Sun Belt Conference punter Brett Shrable, junior kicker Josh Arauco, kick returner Brandon Thompkins and punt returner Kevin Jones. Thompkins broke the Sun Belt Conference record for kickoff return yards last season and Jones ranked 22nd in the nation in punt returns. Under the instruction of head coach Steve Roberts, the Red Wolves appear set at special teams after finishing last season as the only team in the Sun Belt Conference to rank among the top three teams in the league in kickoff returns, punt return average, PAT kicking and kickoff coverage. ASU turned in a solid spring camp that saw several young players emerge as leaders and is excited about its veteran group as well as its incoming recruiting class, all leading to an optimistic outlook about the upcoming season that could end with a second trip to the New Orleans Bowl over the last four years. QUARTERBACK While Corey Leonard established himself as ASU s starting quarterback midway through the 2006 season and turned in a school-record setting 2007 campaign, the Red Wolves have two quarterbacks on its roster with starting experience that can both produce positive results. Leonard was a 2007 All-Sun Belt Conference selection and a Davey O Brien Award semifinalist after throwing a school-record 16 touchdowns and passing for 2,235 yards that ranked as the most since Cleo Lemon, now playing in the NFL, threw for 2,721 yards in Travis Hewitt led ASU to a victory 2008 ARKANSAS STATE FOOTBALL MEDIA GUIDE 28 astateredwolves.com
2008 Season Preview over FIU last season in his only start and had a productive spring that included a three-touchdown performance in the spring game. Transfer Brice Beck also went through spring practices with ASU and is one of three new quarterbacks on the 2008 roster that will help with depth. RUNNING BACK Two-time All-Sun Belt Conference selection Reggie Arnold is expected to shoulder the heaviest load at running back. Arnold is an explosive runner who recorded 1,060 rushing yards last year to become the first player in school history to rush for over 1,000 yards in each of his first two seasons. He ranked 44th in the nation in rushing and his 6.5 average per carry in 2007 was the second highest in the nation among all running backs ranked in the top 50 for rushing yards. Redshirt freshman Derek Lawson saw a lot of action during spring practices and enters the season as the No. 2 running back. Freshman Ronnie Johnson, an Alabama high school all-state selection, will join the team in the fall as the tallest running back at 6-1 and could see immediate playing time. TIGHT END ASU is loaded with depth and talent at tight end and it starts with 6-2, 250- pound senior David Johnson. Johnson, an All-Sun Belt Conference selection by Phil Steele s, has caught 23 passes for 404 yards and four touchdowns over the last two seasons. Despite his large frame, Johnson has big-play potential with two touchdown receptions during his career that covered 62 and 84 yards. Fellow senior Vernon Catlin and juniors J.T. Jordan and Trevor Gillott should all contribute at tight end as well. Gillott has made the biggest impact in the passing game among the three, recording 20 receptions for 183 yards last season and regularly hauling in passes during spring practices. Gillott s 20 receptions last season were the most among the tight ends, but Catlin and Jordan also combined to record six receptions for 99 yards and three touchdowns in OFFENSIVE LINE ASU returns just one starting offensive lineman, Matt Mandich, from last year s team, but he comes back for his senior season touted as one of the top linemen in the Sun Belt Conference. Mandich has started every game of his three-year career, is a three-time All-Sun Belt Conference selection and is on the 2008 Preliminary Rotary Lombardi Award Watch List. Despite losing four players on their line, the Red Wolves still have a wealth of maturity available to step in. Among the players expected to step in as starters next season are a combined seven juniors and seniors. Seniors Brandon Ciaramitaro and Mark Clemons saw a lot of work with the first team this spring at center and tackle, respectively, and saw time last season in a reserve role. Dominic Padrta, Alfred Louis, Drew Hilton and Anthony Jackson could all factor in at guard and will battle for starting positions in the fall. Junior college transfers Derek Newton and Kiano Prater could contribute right away and ASU added three high school players to its roster as well. Reggie Arnold, RB WIDE RECEIVERS ASU graduated three players from its receiving corp, including two-time All-Sun Belt Conference selection Levi Dejohnette, but returns two of its top three wideouts in junior Brandon Thompkins and senior Kevin Jones. Thompkins caught just eight passes as a true freshman in 2006, but broke out with 41 receptions for 503 yards in 2007 to finish second on the team in both categories. Jones has been a consistent threat throughout his career with 51 receptions for 753 yards for an impressive 14.7 yards per catch. The Red Wolves added instant depth with junior college transfers Taylor Clements and Jahbari McLennan, who both played instrumental roles during spring practices at the position. Junior Jarriel Norman did not see any action in 2007, but is expected to see time in ASU also signed two high school wide receivers in Allen Muse and Taylor Stockemer, who each stand 6-4 to give the Red Wolves some needed height at the position. Muse was an all-state performer at Leesville High School in Louisiana and Stockemer, out of Van Buren, Ark., was a Rivals.com national top-100 receiver. DEFENSIVE LINE (TACKLES) ASU lost two interior defensive linemen off last year s team in Prince Hickman and Curtis Bonds, but return valuable re ARKANSAS STATE FOOTBALL MEDIA GUIDE 29 astateredwolves.com
2008 Season Preview serves Bryan Hall, Stanley Porter and Levi Thompson and part-time starter Khari Mays. Among that group, Mays posted the most tackles in 2007 with 17 to his credit. Hall, Porter and Thompson combined to record 17 stops last season. However, Porter played as a true freshman and Hall and Thompson were both redshirt freshmen and playing behind two seniors. The Red Wolves signed one defensive tackle in 5-11, 297-pound Gregory McCall. McCall helped lead Prattville (Ala.) High School to back-to-back 6A state titles as a junior and senior. DEFENSIVE END Led by All-Sun Belt Conference performer Alex Carrington and senior standout Brian Flagg, defensive end is possibly ASU s biggest strength defensively. The two ends combined to record 82 tackles, including 10.5 tackles for loss in Carrington finished with 38 stops and Flagg, a First Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI selection, posted 44 stops to lead all defensive linemen. The Red Wolves also have adequate depth at the position as redshirt freshman Bamidele Ayoola and junior Stanley Wakwe both had an outstanding spring. Wakwe recorded 23 stops last season in a back-up role. Brian Flagg, DE LINEBACKER ASU lost the services of its leading tackler and All-Sun Belt Conference selection Koby McKinnon, but has established depth at linebacker that makes this group another defensive strength. Ben Owens will lead the way in 2008 after recording a careerhigh 96 tackles that ranked as the fifth most in the Sun Belt Conference. Javon McKinnon was also a starter last season at outside linebacker and finished with 41 tackles, including a careerhigh 11 against nationally-ranked Tennessee. ASU will be looking for big things from some young players in sophomore Darius Glover, redshirt freshman Demario Davis, junior Greg Hardy and redshirt freshman Elroy Brown. CORNERBACK The loss of starting cornerbacks Darren Toney and Montis Harrison is deceiving because ASU has both experienced and talented players waiting in the wings to take over those starting roles. Senior Dominique Williams and junior Daylan Walker, who have both started multiple times, are the frontrunners to start heading out of spring practices. Williams has 62 career tackles and five interceptions to his credit, while Walker posted 30 tackles last season and also had an interception as a freshman. ASU also signed three junior college corners, including 2007 First Team NJCAA All-America selection Cordarious Mingo. Walter Moody and Leroy Trahan, both just sophomores, went through spring practices with the Red Wolves and could see action. SAFETY It s no easy task to replace the top two all-time leading tacklers in Sun Belt Conference history, but ASU is off to a good start with junior Evan Van Dolah and sophomore M.D. Jennings. Those two players are expected to fill the starting roles left by 2007 Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Year Tyrell Johnson and First Team All-Sun Belt Conference choice Khayyam Burns. Van Dolah and Jennings both saw playing time in all 12 games last season, finishing with 31 and 26 tackles, respectively. Van Dolah also added two sacks and Jennings an interception. ASU will also get a boost from the return of Marcus Brown, who sat out last season after posting 12 stops in eight games in The Red Wolves will count on redshirt freshman Kelcie McCray and sophomore Marquette Williams for depth. SPECIAL TEAMS Special teams was a strength for ASU in 2007 and the Red Wolves return their leading kicker, punter and return specialists. Brett Shrable took over the punting duties in 2006 as a sophomore and was named Second Team All-Sun Belt Conference in 2007 after averaging 41.7 yards per punt, which ranked as the second-best average in the Sun Belt Conference and 37th nationally. Junior Josh Arauco had one of the best seasons in ASU history for a kicker last year, recording a career-high 15 field goals that ranked as the third most in school history and connecting on all 34 of his extrapoint attempts. He ranked third in the Sun Belt in field goals made (1.3 per game) and 46th nationally. Brandon Thompkins had a record-setting season as a kick returner in 2007, 2008 ARKANSAS STATE FOOTBALL MEDIA GUIDE 30 astateredwolves.com
2008 Season Preview breaking the Sun Belt Conference and ASU records for single-season return yards with 1,062 yards. He also ranked third in the league and 45th nationally in all-purpose yards with yards per game. Senior Kevin Jones averaged 11.4 yards per punt return to rank 22nd in the nation and showed his big-play potential when he broke an 89-yard return for a touchdown against Memphis, which was the third longest return in Sun Belt history. THE SCHEDULE The 2008 schedule is highlighted by three home games slated for September, including a marquee game against Southern Mississippi, as well as road games against longtime rival Memphis and tradition-rich Texas A&M and Alabama. ASU s schedule features five home games, seven games against teams that finished.500 or better in 2007 and five contests against teams that went to a bowl game last season. Arkansas State opens its 2008 campaign on the road against Texas A&M on Aug. 30, playing the Aggies for the second time under head coach Steve Roberts. ASU and Texas A&M also met in 2003 at Kyle Field in the third meeting ever between the two schools. ASU will host Texas Southern in its home opener Sept. 6. The Texas Southern contest will mark the first of three consecutive home games for ASU, which will play Southern Mississippi a week later on Sept. 13 before hosting Middle Tennessee on Sept. 20 in its homecoming game. ASU will catch Southern Mississippi for the third time in the last four years, also facing the Golden Eagles in the 2007 regular-season finale and in the 2005 New Orleans Bowl. ASU will open its seven-game league schedule with the Blue Raiders, playing its first Sun Belt Conference game on the earliest date in school history. Following its three-game home stand, its longest since 2002, ASU will play its fifth game at Memphis Sept. 27 as part of a four-year deal with the school that brings the Tigers back to Jonesboro again in ASU won the last two meetings in the series, winning at Memphis in 2006 on a deep pass as time expired and again last season at Indian Stadium when it overcame a 25-point halftime deficit. After its first open week, Arkansas State will host Louisiana- Monroe on Oct. 11 in its second of three Sun Belt Conference home games during the season. ASU will travel to Louisiana-Lafayette for an Oct. 18 contest, followed by its second open date Oct. 25. While ASU will play Alabama on Nov. 1 in Bryant-Denny Stadium, which seats 92,138, for the first time ever, it actually played Alabama once before. The Indians and Crimson Tide met Oct. 2, 1982, but played at Birmingham s Legion Field in a game that Alabama won The Alabama game has the potential to draw the second largest crowd to ever watch an ASU football game, just behind the crowd of 102,368 on hand for the Indians game at Tennessee in Alabama has sold out every home football game since the 1988 season. The game will mark the third consecutive year ASU has played an SEC opponent, also catching the Volunteers in 2007 and Auburn in It will also be ASU s 49th all-time meeting with a current member of the Southeastern Conference. ASU s final four games will all be against Sun Belt opponents, starting with a trip to Miami to face Florida International on Nov. 8. ASU defeated FIU 31-6 in its only road game ever played against FIU, but will face the Golden Panthers at their new oncampus stadium in ASU s third and final open date will arrive the week after the FIU game. As part of its annual Senior Night, ASU will play its final home game Nov. 22 against defending Sun Belt Conference and New Orleans Bowl champion Florida Atlantic. ASU closes out its regular season with two road games, facing North Texas on Nov. 29 and Troy on Dec. 6. Brandon Thompkins, WR/KR 2008 ARKANSAS STATE FOOTBALL MEDIA GUIDE 31 astateredwolves.com
