3 Introduction: For more than a century, some freshman boys have entered Rensselaer High School each year with the hopes to make the freshman team, and between each year have reached that goal. Many but not all have made it to the junior varsity level, and even fewer still have earned a varsity letter wearing the Bomber uniform on Friday and Saturday nights. In total, we estimate that since 1910 nearly 2,000 athletes have played basketball wearing Rensselaer red and black, the team and individual records displayed in this book highlight the very best performances through nearly 110 years of Rensselaer Central Bomber boys basketball. This record book was created not only to honor the great achievements of those who have sought to honor Rensselaer on the hardwood, but also to inspire future generations to reach greater heights. The hard work to compile this information was a collective effort by Bomber faithful who want to see more championship banners hanging from Joe Burvan Gymnasium. Until 2017, Rensselaer had an incomplete history of team and individual records. To create this book was to re-create history - something that could only be done in the age of digital information. It was not easy and we recognize that some information is incomplete. But we are confident that the information we now have is accurate if not 100% complete, and we hope that future work may turn up new information that will only improve the records further. Our Methods To compile this information we relied on a variety of resources including yearbooks dating back to the 1920 s, newspaper box scores found at the Rensselaer library or on Newspapers.com, and newspaper articles containing season previews, sectional previews, or lists of area statistical leaders. In some cases, players themselves had preserved stats from their coaches and provided it to us, and in other cases we simply stumbled upon names in box scores of great players who had been lost in time while looking for the stats of other players. For some important pieces of information on players that appeared to set multiple records, we even reviewed every box score of every game played in their careers. We also spoke to past coaches and players in an effort to find as much information as possible. We want to provide a special thank you to current RCHS Coach Mark McFarland ( ) who started the project and who inspired others to help complete it. With all that said we are highly confident in both team and individual scoring records, as game box scores have been available for many years. We are just as confident in stats containing FG made and FT made. Shooting percentages became slightly more difficult to find as older box
4 scores did not always contain FG or FT attempts. Rebounds and assists were even more difficult to recreate, and in many but not all cases were not available until the early 1980 s. Other stats such as blocks and steals were not kept or reported on consistently until even more recently. Readers may notice that some records reflect more recent teams or players, which is simply due to the availability of the information that we could find and reasonably verify. In some cases we were able to find information on a nearly complete season but would still be missing a game or two for 100% accurate data. Despite being a continual work in progress, we are highly confident that this book provides a credible record of the best Rensselaer teams and individual career, season, and game performances in RCHS history. The players and teams in this book have all earned, through hard work and passion, the right to have their names remembered. Notable and Interesting Bomber Basketball Facts and Observations: Rensselaer s first basketball team was organized in 1908, three years before the first state tournament was played. We were known as the Indians into the late 1930 s. The first references to Rensselaer Bombers was seen in the 1938 Chaos yearbook. The Glenn Bahler-led team owns the longest winning streak in school history at 24 games. They were one of two remaining undefeated teams in the state heading into the tournament, and reached what we believe is the highest single-class state ranking (12th) at the end of the season. Glenn Bahler went on to play for Purdue from The current RCHS gym was christened on Dec. 7th, 1968 with a win over West Lafayette. Its 2,400 seating capacity was a big upgrade over the 1,200 seat cracker box at the old high school. The sectional champions led by Ron Fenwick were an offensive juggernaut. They were also a voracious rebounding team led by Bob Clouse and Larry Edmonds on the boards. That team ended its season in the morning game of the regionals when two mysterious fouls were called in the first minute on 28 ppg scorer Fenwick against Lafayette Jeff.. at Lafayette Jeff s gym. Hmmm....RCHS avenged that injustice 23 years later in its next regional appearance when the 1991 Bombers became the only team to defeat Lafayette Jeff on its home court in a single-class regional game. It was a thrilling overtime victory in the morning session - which was capped by a last-second shot to win the regional over Twin Lakes in the afternoon game. HoF inductee Bob Tweedie had a strong scoring career at RCHS and went on to be a two year starter at North Dakota. He had nice games against Purdue when they played the Boilers. Mark Davisson and Mike Crowley are the only two players in RCHS history to score at least 20
5 points per game in the same season ( ), and they scored a combined 1,992 career points. Both graduated in 1989, which had one of the top shooting and scoring teams of all time. It appears that Ryan Hooker remains the only player in RCHS history to be invited to the top 40 workout at season s end. Even though Terry and Ben Davisson were two years apart, they appeared to be competing for the top spot in many rebounding, scoring, and blocked shot categories throughout this book. We believe that Todd Waggoner ( ) is the only player in RCHS history to start and play every game from Freshman to Senior year while averaging double figure scoring and rebounding each year. He is the all-time career scorer and 2nd all-time rebounder in RCHS History. Dan Brandenburg still owns the unofficial record of 52 dunks during the season. It s safe to say this record may never be broken. His two dunks vs. Lafayette Jeff in the morning regional game set the gym on fire and created a home-court advantage for the Bombers as three of the four towns packing the 7,500 seat gym were rooting for Rensselaer from that point on. Former Bomber Athletic Director David Day, who was also head coach for RCHS in the early 70 s, is the only known former player who also coached the Bombers. As a player, he was the leading scorer on a strong 19-5 sectional champion campaign in To the best of our knowledge, the most points scored by any Bomber team in a game is 108 vs. Hebron in In that game Ron Fenwick set the current single-game scoring mark of 51. The team also scored 105 that same season against Demotte. RCHS has played many tough schedules in it s history, but perhaps the most difficult schedule we found was set for the hoopsters, whose slate included Central Catholic, West Lafayette, Highland, Logansport, Crown Point, South Bend Riley, and Gary Andrean during the regular season! The team followed that schedule up by including S.B. Riley, Highland, West Lafayette, Central Catholic, Logansport, Crown Point, Hobart and Portage. The team also had a tough road, beginning the season with East Gary and Valparaiso and continuing with West Lafayette, Central Catholic, Jimtown, Lowell, and Rochester. Have important information, action photos, or stats that we missed? Send it to Brian Chamness so that it can be added to the record book. Please scan and all information to: jbc798@yahoo.com
