TCU claimed a 2-1 victory on Aug. 21, 2009, and downed the Longhorns 1-0 in Fort Worth on Oct. 21 as Kelly Johnson scored the contest s lone goal at 17:26 off an assist from Ashley Jones. It will be the first postseason meeting between the two. Texas Takes On TCU In Big 12 Championship Semifinals Texas, the No. 4 seed, continues Big 12 Championship action with its 10th appearance in the semifinals. It is the second-straight year, and seventh time in the last nine years, the Longhorns have advanced to the semifinals of the league event. The Longhorns have won a pair of Big 12 Championships in program history, claiming the 2006 and 2007 crowns by defeating Colorado 5-4 in penalty kicks after a 1-1 regulation draw for the first title and downing Texas A&M 2-1 for the second. UT is the lone current member of the Big 12 to qualify for the league s postseason tournament every year, and one of two to have won a Big 12 Championship. Texas freshman Kelsey Shimmick became the fourth player, and second rookie, in program history to record two or more goals in a Big 12 Championship match Wednesday morning against Oklahoma, scoring at 27:02 and 80:09 in the 3-0 win. Freshman Abby Smith recorded her sixth shutout of the year, the second most in Texas history by a rookie and tied for the ninth most in Big 12 history by a freshman. Official's signature SAN ANTONIO -- Texas used a pair of first-half goals and one in the final 10 minutes to down Oklahoma 3-0 in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Championship on Wednesday morning. After an own goal gave the Longhorns the lead at 24:03, freshman Kelsey Shimmick scored at 27:02 and 80:09 to lead UT to the victory. Shimmick became the fourth player, and second freshman, in program history to score two or more goals during a Big 12 Championship match. The triumph pushed the Longhorns (8-10-1) into the semifinals of the Big 12 Championship for the second-straight season and seventh time in the last nine years. It was also Texas first-ever victory over Oklahoma (7-9-4) in postseason play. Neither team registered a shot Wednesday morning until the 12th minute, when Higgins took a pass from classmate Kristin Cummins and fired on goal, but Oklahoma goalkeeper Kelsey Devonshire came up with the stop. At 12:24, sophomore Brooke Gilbert fired again on Devonshire, who leaped up and knocked the ball over the net for a UT corner kick. Following the serve, freshman Chantale Campbell took a shot from nearly 20 yards away, but it was blocked before reaching Devonshire. The Sooners responded with an offensive surge of their own, starting with a shot from Samantha Howell at 13:12. Oklahoma recorded a pair of corner kicks in the 17th minute and Katharine Nutman had a shot blocked at 17:40 to end the run. Texas then broke the game open with two goals in a three minute span to take a 2-0 advantage. The first was started by a pass from sophomore Sharis Lachappelle that went to Campbell and then Shimmick, who sent it toward the net. A Sooner got a foot on the ball to try and clear the Shimmick shot, but the ball hit off the OU player s foot and went past Devonshire to give the Longhorns the lead. Less than three minutes later, Shimmick took consecutive passes from Higgins and Campbell to send the ball past Devonshire from nearly 14 yards away for the two-goal lead. OU had its final scoring opportunity in the opening half as Annalisa Hall fired at 38:45 on Smith, who sent the ball over the end line for a save and Sooner corner kick. Hall served in the corner, but no shots resulted. In the second half, Higgins tallied the first two shots as her first was blocked and second hit the crossbar. Lachappelle followed with an attempt at 53:20, but it was saved by Devonshire. The Sooners had their first shot of the second stanza at 54:16, when Kali Fournier fired high. Shimmick took another attempt, at 61:11, but it was blocked. UT added the insurance at 80:09 with Shimmick s second goal as she broke away from the defense with a pass from Emilie Campbell in the midfield. Did You Know? Since first making the event in 2001, the Longhorns have missed the NCAA Tournament just once, in 2009 when the squad finished the campaign The Longhorns have advanced to the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament three times (2004, 2006, 2007). UT has claimed three conference championships. The Longhorns won the 2001 Big 12 regular season title in addition to Big 12 tournament crowns in 2006 and Texas has had five players earn a total of eight National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-America honors. Kasey Moore ( ) is the only three-time selection while Kelly Wilson ( ) received a pair of nods. The Longhorns are versus the Horned Frogs, with TCU claiming the last two contests, 2-1 on Aug. 21, 2009, and 1-0 on Oct. 21 of this season. The 2009 contest was the season opener and the Horned Frogs Jordan Calhoun tallied both of her team s goals, scoring in the fourth and 85th minutes to lead TCU to the victory. Leah Fortune recorded the UT goal in the fifth minute. Earlier this year, Kelly Johnson scored the contest s lone goal at 17:26 off an assist from Ashley Jones to lift the Horned Frogs to the victory. Gunning For Its Third... Texas has won a pair of Big 12 Championships in program history, claiming the 2006 and 2007 crowns by defeating Colorado 5-4 in penalty kicks after a 1-1 regulation draw for the first title and downing Texas A&M 2-1 for the second. The Only One And One Of Two... Texas is the only current member of the Big 12 Conference to have qualified for the league tournament each year of the event s existence. The Longhorns are also one of only two current Big 12 programs to have won the league s postseason tournament, joining Oklahoma State, which won in 2003, 2009 and Texas In The Semifinals... 13 Behind The Scenes With The Horns Freshman Chantale Campbell was a member of the U-17 Canadian Women s National Team that won the gold medal at the 2010 U-17 Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) World Cup Qualifying Tournament in Costa Rica, earning a bid to the U-17 World Cup in Trinidad and Tobago. She secured the first-place finish with the game-winning goal on the final kick of a penalty shootout against the United States. Freshman Emilie Campbell is the twin sister of Chantale Campbell. The sisters also have two older brothers, Eric and Matthew. Junior goalkeeper Alejandra Eljuri (a senior academically) was a member of the UT Club Soccer Program for three years prior to joining the Longhorns varsity squad. In the fall of 2011, the club team went undefeated in the regular season, claimed the regional championship and made its third-straight appearance at the national tournament. Jaynes father, Richie, was an assistant strength and conditioning coach at SMU from Freshman Lindsey Meyer s grandfather Gary played baseball and basketball at the University of Texas, earning a letter in basketball in Her father, Brad, lettered in baseball at Baylor from Freshman Sydney Shutter s mother, Jamie, is the Director of University Health Services at the University of Texas. Shutter was on a competitive rock climbing team from ages 7 to 11 and then gave it up to focus on soccer. Freshmen Lindsey Meyer, Kelsey Shimmick and Abby Smith all played for the Dallas Texas 94 Red Soccer Club since The squad spent the majority of the season ranked No. 1 nationally in the ESPNHS Elite Clubs National League standings. While in Japan with the U.S. U-20 Women s National team, freshman Abby Smith visited the Atomic Bomb Dome and the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. Freshman Ali Schmalz is a first degree black belt in karate. Freshman Aaron Strawser was a member of West Brook High School s Mock Trial team and received the Best Witness award at the High School Mock Trial Competition sponsored by the Jefferson County Young Lawyers Association.
