The Plano, Texas, native set a new personal single-match career-high with 10 saves and now possesses 81 for the season, good for ninth in stops on the all-time Texas single-season list. So far this year, Texas is an impressive in matches where it scores at least one goal, including five one-goal victories (at Hawaii - 2-1; vs. #6 Texas Tech OT; at Iowa State - 1-0; at Oklahoma - 1-0; at Baylor - 2-1). 3 GAME NOTES HISTORY IN THE BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIP Texas has appeared in every Big 12 Championship dating back to the 1996 season (18 appearances) and owns a overall record with two titles (2006, 2007). UT is all-time in its opening round matches and is in such matches, with a 2012 semifinal appearance, since the arrival of Angela Kelly to take over the program prior to the 2012 campaign. Against Wednesday s opponent Texas Tech at the Big 12 Championship, the Longhorns are 1-0 after a 1-0 victory over the Red Raiders in San Antonio, Texas, back in 2011 (see pages 7 & 8 of these notes for more Texas Big 12 Championship info). SOLID SO FAR ON PENALTIES With ties in the Big 12 Championship settled through the use of penalty kicks, Texas has to feel pretty confident if forced into that situation. UT has been sent to the spot four times in and has scored successfully on all four of those spot kicks. Brooke Gilbert finished one each in wins over Texas A&M-CC and Montana, Sharis Lachappelle blasted a PK home against UALR and Lindsey Meyer tucked one into the net against Oklahoma State. The last time the Horns went to penalties in the postseason was during a 0-0 (2OT) tie against TCU in the 2012 Big 12 Championship, falling 4-2 on spot kicks. UT has won three of its four all-time PK sessions in the league event (2006, two in 2007, 2012). In fact, the only player with more than one match-winning score is junior midfielder Lindsey Meyer who owns two. Most recently, freshman forward Morgan Murphy (at Oklahoma) and sophomore midfielder Julia Dyche (at Baylor) picked up crucial winning goals for the Horns. OUR RPI IS SOLID Texas is sitting at No. 34 in the Ratings Percentage Index released on Mon., Nov. 3, by the NCAA, good for fifth in the Big 12 behind West Virginia, Texas Tech, Kansas and Oklahoma State. The Longhorns reached as high as No. 25 at one point this season on Oct. 6 and were as high as No. 30 last week. RPI is a major component looked at when determine at-large bid selections to the annual NCAA Tournament field of 64. As of Oct. 30, Top Drawer Soccer projected Texas as a recipient of an at-large berth to the field. NOTICED BY THE NSCAA Texas picked up one vote in the latest Continental Tire/NSCAA Coaches Poll released on Tues., Oct. 28. It marked the first time the Longhorns have picked up votes since receiving three votes in the September 2nd rankings when in possession of a overall record. WE VE PLAYED A SOLID SCHEDULE! Texas senior defender Brooke Gilbert was honored on Mon., Oct. 27, for her efforts in crucial Big 12 league victories at Oklahoma & Baylor. The Snohomish, Wash., native was named to the Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week as well as the Big 12 Conference s Defensive Player of the Week. She played all 180 possible minutes in the two matches as part of the defensive backline, helping limit rival OU to just six shots in a 1-0 shutout and dished an assist on Lindsey Meyer s match-tying goal at 74:27 of the 2-1 win at Baylor. Gilbert has been quite the offensive contributor for the Longhorns during the campaign, netting a single season career-high-tying four goals and registering two assists for a career-best 10 total points. Her contributions come despite serving as a starting defender in the backline for the Burnt Orange & White, making her one of the highest-scoring defenders in the Big 12. West Virginia midfielder/defender Michaela Abam has seven goals while splitting time between offensive & defensive positions. UT followed up a 1-0 defeat to Kansas (Oct. 10) with a 3-1 road loss at TCU (Oct. 17). Texas rebounded from the defeat against the Horned Frogs to shutout UALR, 2-0, on Oct. 20. Texas owns an mark when holding opponents under 10 shots in a match. UT was 6-3 in 2012, in 2013 and is unbeaten at thus far in when holding its foes to nine or fewer total shots. This season in those instances, the Horns tied Arizona State (eight shots) and defeated Hawai i (eight shots), Nevada (nine shots), Texas A&M-CC (three shots), Montana (six shots), Iowa State (six shots), UALR (three shots) and at Oklahoma (six shots). SCORING FIRST SETS THE RIGHT TONE In three seasons under coach Angela Kelly, the Longhorns have posted an mark when scoring the initial goal of the contest. She started off the weekend by making a season-best seven saves in shutting out the nationally-ranked Razorbacks during a 0-0 (2OT) deadlock. Smith followed that up with five saves in UT s 5-1 rout of Nevada. OUTSTANDING OFFENSE FROM OLIVIA! Texas freshman forward Olivia Brook has wasted little time demonstrating her scoring potential for the Longhorns by finishing a team-leading six goals through her first 18 career matches, including her first career match-winner via golden goal at 97:00 of the 1-0 (OT) upset of #6 Texas Tech (Sept. 26). For her efforts against Texas A&M-CC and Montana, the Houston, Texas, product was honored as the Big 12 Conference s Newcomer of the Week (Sept. 9). In the history of the UT program, NO FRESHMAN HAD EVER STARTED OFF HER CAREER WITH FIVE GOALS IN HER FIRST FIVE MATCHES UNTIL BROOK ACCOMPLISHED THE FEAT THIS SEASON. Before Brook s start, three Texas rookies had managed four goals in their initial five contests: Courtney Goodson (2008), Kelly Wilson (2001) and Alanna Makinano (1996). Brook scored two goals each in back-to-back matches against Nevada and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. AN IMPRESSIVE OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION! Texas totaled 11 goals combined over two matches against Nevada (5-1) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (6-0). It had been almost 11 years since the Longhorn offense put together a two-match scoring output like that as the last occurrence came back over Oct , 2003 in victories over Baylor (4-0) and Texas Tech (7-0). The outburst wasn t close to the all-time program mark, however, as Texas totaled a staggering 17 goals in a two-match stretch over Sept , 1997, against Oklahoma (W, 9-0) and Oklahoma State (W, 8-0). ONE IS GOOD BUT TWO IS BETTER... Senior defender Brooke Gilbert and freshman forward Olivia Brook decided that one goal wasn t enough for them during the 5-1 victory over Nevada at Mike A. Myers Stadium on Aug. 31. The duo each registered the first two-goal matches of their careers to power then the largest UT scoring output since a five-goal outburst back on Aug. 28, 2011 against Cal State Northridge. Gilbert got the offense going by tallying the first goal of the match at 16:51. After Nevada clawed back within one goal at 2-1 in the 18th minute, Brook and Gilbert combined for three scores at 37:23, 50:16 (Gilbert) and 51:24 to put the match away for the Horns. 9 MATCH 1 TEXAS vs. Arizona State Waipahu, Hi. - Aug. 22, Arizona St TEXAS Junior goalkeeper Abby Smith and freshman forward Olivia Brook each tallied a pair of first-half goals to lead the Texas Soccer team to a 2-2 tie against Arizona State at Waipi o Peninsula Stadium in the Outrigger Resorts Shootout. Texas opened the scoring in the 25th minute (24:58) when Smith took a free kick from 45 yards out that found its way past ASU keeper Chandler Morris. The score marked Smith s second career goal, as she previously connected on a similar free kick from behind the midfield stripe in last year s home contest against South Florida (Aug. 25, 2013). The Longhorns increased their cushion to 2-0 just before the end of the first half. Brook fired a shot which deflected off Morris and found the lower right portion of the net in the 44th minute (43:38). The Sun Devils trimmed the deficit in half in the 62nd minute (61:25), when McKenzie Berryhill connected on a header off a feed from Lucy Lara. Berryhill then scored the equalizer on a penalty kick with less than six minutes remaining in regulation (84:29). Senior midfielder Sharis Lachappelle nearly put the Horns back in front late in the contest, but her shot in the 88th minute hit the crossbar. Neither team could find the back of the net during the two 10-minute overtime periods. Smith played the entire 110 minutes in goal for Texas and recorded three saves. Texas ASU Shots 9 8 SOG 5 5 Saves 3 3 Corners 8 5 Fouls MATCH 2 TEXAS at Hawai i Waipahu, Hi. - Aug. 25, TEXAS Hawai i Senior defender Whitney Jaynes scored an unassisted goal in the 73rd minute to lead the Texas Soccer team to a 2-1 victory against Hawai i at Waipi o Peninsula Stadium in the Outrigger Resorts Shootout. The Longhorns improved to on the year with the win, while the Rainbow Wahine fell to 0-2. Hawaii opened the scoring in the fifth minute (4:12) when Krystal Pascua gathered the ball with her back to the goal, turned and directed her shot into the upper left part of the net. Texas drew even in the 22nd minute (21:44) when junior Lindsey Meyer slotted the ball into the box and sophomore Julia Dyche found the net from 12 yards out for her first goal of the year and second of her collegiate career. Jaynes then scored the game-winning goal in the 73rd minute (72:47) when her shot from outside the 18-yard box found the upper right part of the net. This marked Jaynes first goal of the year and second of her career. Junior goalkeeper Abby Smith played the entire 90 minutes in goal for Texas and recorded two saves. Although the total shots were even at 8-8, the Horns recorded a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal and a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. In the decisive second half, UT registered a 6-2 margin in shots and a 5-2 margin in corner kicks. Texas Hawai i Shots 8 8 SOG 7 3 Saves 2 5 Corners 6 3 Fouls MATCH 3 No. 25/22 Arkansas at TEXAS Austin, Texas - Aug. 29, #25 Arkansas TEXAS After waiting out a two-hour and threeminute lightning delay during Friday s event opener between Stephen F. Austin and Nevada, Texas (1-0-2) christened its home campaign by battling No. 22 Arkansas (2-0- 1) to a 0-0 (2OT) draw in front of 1,359 fans at the Mike A. Myers Stadium. The nationally-ranked Razorbacks outshot the Longhorns by a 15-8 total and 7-4 in shots on goal, while UT managed a 7-3 advantage on corners. Texas junior goalkeeper Abby Smith continued her amazing play between the pipes by earning her 16th career shutout on the strength of seven saves. Originally scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. CT, the two teams finally took the pitch at 8:57 p.m. An argument could be made that the lengthy wait affected both teams as neither squad s offense appeared sharp in the early going. Texas finally got its offense untracked around the 13th minute as following a wide shot by forward Kelsey Shimmick, a cross from Lachappelle resulted in a header over the bar by midfielder Lindsey Meyer. Just minutes later the Horns managed three corner kicks in quick succession, but managed just a single shot as sophomore defender Isabelle Kerr s try drifted high. Lachappelle continued wreaking havoc in the midfield towards the end of the opening stanza as a 30th minute left-footed drive and a shot with just 12 seconds remaining forced a pair of stops by Arkansas keeper Cameron Carter as the teams went to the break at 0-0. The match had stretched out at that point as Arkansas nearly caught the Horns on the break in a couple of instances. With neither offense winning the battle of Texas crosses into the middle and Arkansas lobs off long throw-ins, the match would require overtime. In the first OT the Razorbacks managed the only two shots, with the best chance coming on a volleyed drive from the top of the 18 from forward Ashleigh Ellenwood that ventured wide. UA nearly ended things with 7:38 remaining in the second OT as a header by Kelley hit off the crossbar and was cleared out of danger. Smith, who had already scored two goals from her keeper position in her Longhorn career, blasted a free kick on goal with three minutes remaining, but Carter was there to preserve the scoreless deadlock. 10 MATCH 4 Nevada at TEXAS Austin, Texas - Aug. 31, Nevada TEXAS Texas senior defender Brooke Gilbert and freshman forward Olivia Brook each registered the first two-goal matches of their careers and sophomore forward Jasmine Hart dished three assists as the Longhorns (2-0-2) cruised past Nevada (0-3-1) in front of 1,214 at Mike A. Myers Stadium, 5-1. UT dominated the stats, out-shooting the Wolf Pack by a commanding 26-9 total, including 15-2 in the second stanza. Texas also managed 12-6 advantage in shots on frame and led in corners by a staggering 11-1 total. The scoring output marked the first five-goal match for Texas since back on Aug. 28, 2011, vs. Cal State Northridge. Junior forward Chantale Campbell joined Gilbert and Brook in the scoring column by contributing her first goal of the campaign. The offensive fireworks began in earnest during the 17th minute as Texas got on the board for a 1-0 advantage. Dyche took a corner, delivering a feed towards the far post that was headed by Meyer straight back across the goal mouth to Gilbert. Unmarked just six yards out from goal, she easily beat Bryar for the first tally of the match. The advantage expanded to two scores just 50 seconds later as a beautiful pass from Hart found the foot of an onrushing Campbell, and she finished from 12 yards. Nevada raced down the pitch on the re-start, working a give-and-go that saw Daisha Jones- Oglesby feed Chrisalyn Fonte to cut the deficit to 2-1. It wasn t long before Brook restored the Horns two-goal lead. Following a beautiful twopass connection between Hart and Gernsbacher, the Houston, Texas, native headed home a cross into the upper left corner of the goal in the 38th minute. The second stanza proved even more dominant in favor of UT as the Longhorns were credited with the first 14 shots of the final 45 minutes. Searching for more on the scoreboard during the 51st minute, Lachappelle delivered a perfect cross from the right wing towards the far post where Gilbert was lying in wait. The defender leapt high over her marker, heading the ball off the underside of the crossbar and into the far side of the netting to make it 4-1. Just 1:08 later Hart found herself in space about 20 yards out at the top of the box. She unleashed a shot that was parried by Bryar right back out into the middle of the pitch. Brook didn t let the ball drop, volleying a drive past the keeper for UT s fifth score. Prior to the offensive outburst, the last time the Horns scored six times in a single match was back on Sept. 14, 2007, versus University of Texas at San Antonio. UT out-shot TA&M-CC by a commanding 27-3 total and managed a 17-2 advantage on corners. Freshman forward Olivia Brook continued the amazing start to her rookie season in Burnt Orange & White, scoring two more goals and dishing a pair of helpers to give her a team-best five scores and 12 total points in. The Houston, Texas, native is now off the best offensive start for any freshman in Texas soccer program history with five scores over her initial quintet of matches. Senior defender Brooke Gilbert registered her third score, while sophomore forward Jasmine Hart and junior midfielder Lindsey Meyer each tallied their initial goals of the year. The freshman s flick to the middle found Meyer standing about eight yards out, and the Coppell, Texas, product finished her first goal of the season into the lower left corner. Just 2:10 into the second half, Texas got on the board again to nab a 2-0 advantage. Kelsey Shimmick crossed a ball from the right wing to the far post. Brook had the ball land at her feet and fired a quick shot that was saved. The ricochet off the keeper bounced right to Hart out on the right wing, and the Haltom City, Texas, native made her finish look routine from a tough angle. Jaynes started another goal-scoring play in the 60th minute as she came racing up the left wing and crossed a ball in front of the Islander defense. Waiting to blast it home was Brook, who finished into the left side of the netting from 13 yards out to make it 3-0. At 66:04 Hart made a strong run past a defender into the box chasing a loose ball and was tripped up. The referee pointed to the spot, and Gilbert stepped up to bury a penalty kick for a four-score advantage. A little over five minutes later, Hart fed a ball from the middle of the pitch out to Brook on the left wing. The rookie forward drove an amazing shot on net from 30 yards out that just nicked into the upper right corner for a 5-0 lead. The scoring was finalized at 6-0 in the 87th minute as Texas A&M-CC s Daniela Gonzalez headed a UT cross into her own net. Texas TAMUCC Shots 27 3 SOG 14 1 Saves 1 8 Corners Fouls MATCH 6 Montana at TEXAS Austin, Texas - Sept. 7, Montana TEXAS Texas got a clutch penalty kick goal at 66:14 from senior defender Brooke Gilbert and a clinching, 90th-minute score from junior forward Chantale Campbell to continue its unbeaten start to the campaign with a 2-0 victory over Montana (3-3-0). At 4-0-2, the Longhorns remain unbeaten through their opening six matches to start a season for only the second time in program history after the 2008 UT squad began the year at Gilbert now possesses four goals on the year, two of those of the penalty kick variety, on just five total shots, while Campbell s score marked her second of the season. Junior goalkeeper Abby Smith made a pair of saves in posting her third clean sheet of the season and the 18th of her career. Texas out-shot the Grizzlies by a total of 23-6 for the match with a 14-1 advantage over the second 45 minutes of play. UT also managed a commanding 10-1 lead on penalty kicks. Montana wasted little time making its presence felt over the first 8:38 as UM managed three of its six total shots in the match and both of its drives on frame. The most troubling was a blast by forward Mackenzie Akins, just 1:32 in, that rattled off the crossbar. The best chance for Texas during the opening stanza came at 17:48 as a beautiful feed from Campbell out on the right wing located freshman forward Olivia Brook in a lot of space about 14 yards out in the middle of the 18. The Houston, Texas, native measured her header, but sent it just over the crossbar for a goal kick. Montana again threatened during the 33rd minute. Substitute Savannah Witt corralled a ball in the middle of the 18, turned quickly against her marker and fired a shot that rattled off the outside of the left upright as the two teams would eventually head to the break scoreless. With the Longhorn offense buzzing in UM territory in the 60th minute, Dyche took the ball to the right end line and crossed to the far post. Lachappelle got to it a half a step late as her header drifted just wide of the left upright. Finally in the 67th minute, Dyche took a feed from Campbell on the right side of the 18 and moved quickly towards the middle of the pitch. After eluding a defender, the Southlake, Texas, product was taken down, giving the referee no alternative but to point to the spot. Gilbert was again called upon to finish off the spot kick and tucked it away in the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. The Grizzlies weren t going to go away without a fight as a troublesome shot by UM s Akins at the 68:13 mark was tipped over the crossbar by Smith. With the Horns firing away down the stretch, the insurance goal finally came with just seconds remaining. 11 MATCH 7 TEXAS vs. UCF Tampa, Fla. - Sept. 12, TEXAS UCF In a match that was broken into two distinct parts by a one-hour and 45-minute lightning delay, Texas (4-1-2) suffered its first defeat of the campaign, dropping a 2-0 decision to UCF (4-2-0) at Corbett Soccer Stadium in Tampa, Fla. The Longhorns out-shot the Knights by a 10-5 total over the second half with six of those drives coming over the final 17:37 of action following the weather delay. With UT pressing hard late for an equalizer, UCF sealed the triumph at 86:15 by adding a goal into an empty net via a quick counterattack. The best chance for either team in the opening 45 minutes came during the 23rd minute as a cross from the left wing to the middle landed right at the feet of midfielder Amanda Wilkin. She fired a point-blank shot from about eight yards out that was saved by Abby Smith, but the rebound bounced straight back out. Wilkin corralled the ball and fired another shot that was held by Smith to end the threat. UCF wasted no time in grabbing the lead out of the halftime break. A Texas foul on forward Tatiana Coleman set the Knights up in prime position just two yards outside the top of the 18. Jennifer Martin stepped up to the ball and curled a perfect shot into the upper right corner at 47:24 for a 1-0 lead. The Longhorns came exceptionally close to tying the contest during the 63rd minute. Sharis Lachappelle made a great move to split a pair of defenders on the left wing and crossed a terrific ball to the middle. The pass located Jasmine Hart in prime real estate about 10 yards out in the middle of the 18. Unfortunately, the Haltom City, Texas, product s well-measured header traveled just inches over the crossbar, settling into the top netting. With 17:37 left in the contest, lightning struck close to Corbett Stadium, forcing a weather delay that began at 4:57 p.m. CT. Finally, after a one-hour and 45-minute break, the match recommenced with UCF holding its 1-0 advantage. Texas again came close to an equalizer with 11:41 left as Kelsey Shimmick s long shot from 35-plus yards out scraped just over the crossbar. With about five minutes left in the match, the Longhorn offense had one more push left. With the ball out on the right wing, Julia Dyche and Julie Arnold each registered shots from 15 yards out that were blocked. The second rebounded out perfectly for UCF to start the game-sealing, scoring counterattack. Texas UCF Shots SOG 3 8 Saves 6 3 Corners Fouls MATCH 8 TEXAS at USF Tampa, Fla. - Sept. 14, TEXAS USF A 32nd-minute goal by forward Olivia Chance and a late penalty kick proved enough to guide USF (4-3-1) to a 2-0 victory over Texas (4-2-2) on Sunday afternoon at Corbett Soccer Stadium in Tampa, Fla. The Bulls out-shot the Horns by a total and 7-4 in shots on goal, while UT managed an 11-4 corner kick advantage. The extremely physical match was marred by 20 combined fouls, 14 of those on USF, numerous player collisions and three total yellow cards. With Texas owning the majority of the early possession, the Horns registered the match s initial shot during the sixth minute as a pass from the middle to the left wing by senior midfielder Sharis Lachappelle located sophomore forward Jasmine Hart. The Haltom City, Texas, native eluded a defender, via a quick move to her right, and fired a low drive that was corralled on a dive by USF keeper Katarina Elliott. The Longhorns best opportunity of the first half came in the 28th minute as junior forward Kelsey Shimmick made a strong run up the right wing and delivered a great cross to the middle. Freshman forward Olivia Brook came charging into the play near the top of the 18, but got a little too far under her headed effort, popping the ball over the crossbar for a goal kick. The Bulls managed to break the scoreless dead-lock at 31:43 as midfielder Chance scored from about 10 yards out on the left wing. UT junior net minder Abby Smith, who made five saves in the match, had initially charged off her line to defend a shot and went down briefly following a harsh collision with a USF player. With the net mouth virtually unguarded, the ball ricocheted around before winding up at the feet of Chance who finished into the right side of the twine. The physicality was really cranked up in the second half as both teams battled hard for possession. Neither offense managed a serious scoring threat over the first 20 minutes of the second stanza as the defenses consistently cleared away any potential danger. USF had an opportunity off a corner in the 67th minute as Ocean Parr saw the ball fall to her feet about 12 yards out on the right wing. Her drive never troubled Smith, however, as the shot traveled well high of frame. Texas mounted some sustained pressure of its own from the 67th through 70th minutes by earning a pair of corners. Senior defender Brooke Gilbert managed a pair of strong headers, but both shots traveled wide left of frame. With 18:38 remaining in the contest, the Horns were judged to have committed a foul inside the 18. USF forward Demi Stokes stepped to the spot and converted the resulting penalty kick to seal the Bulls 2-0 victory. Texas USF Shots SOG 4 7 Saves 5 4 Corners Fouls MATCH 9 #1 UCLA at TEXAS Austin, Texas - Sept. 19, #1 UCLA TEXAS Texas (4-3-2) took the best shot that defending national champion and top-ranked UCLA (7-0-1) could deliver in dropping a hard-fought, 1-0 decision to the Bruins in front of 1,803 burnt orange-clad fans at Mike A. Myers Stadium. The Longhorns registered more shots on goal (three) than any other team had accomplished against the Bruins during the campaign and equaled the best team shot output thus far with five. UCLA goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland had been required to make just four saves over seven combined matches before UT kept her busy by forcing three stops. UCLA out-shot the Horns by a 21-5 total, but the Burnt Orange & White closed the gap to just 9-4 in favor of the Bruins over the final 45 minutes of play. What turned out to be the only goal of the contest came just 2:52 into the match. UCLA defender Caprice Dydasco made a pass up the left wing to Taylor Smith. The junior forward made a strong run up the left wing and delivered a cross into the middle that landed right at the feet of Bruin standout Sam Mewis. The midfielder didn t waste her chance, burying the ball into the lower left corner from 12 yards out for a 1-0 lead. After surviving the early onslaught, Texas began to settle into the contest. Texas first shot came at 25:55 courtesy of freshman forward Olivia Brook. The Longhorns leading scorer took a pass from the left wing, moved towards the middle and launched a drive from 22 yards out that drifted wide right of the far post. From there the Bruins controlled the remaining action in the opening stanza, out-shooting UT by an 8-0 count over the final 19:05. Texas spent the best part of the first eight minutes of the second stanza in the Bruins end. Arguably the best offensive stretch of the match for Texas came during the 56th and 60th minutes. First, sophomore midfielder Julia Dyche let a shot fly from 28 yards out on the right side that drifted wide left. Junior forward Chantale Campbell followed soon after by launching a drive from near the right end line that forced Rowland s initial save of the contest. Texas best scoring opportunity came at 66:04 as senior defender Whitney Jaynes made a strong run up the left wing. The Plano, Texas, native crossed a ball to the middle where senior midfielder Sharis Lachappelle was waiting. Battling her marker, the San Antonio, Texas, product attempted to volley the pass out of the air from eight yards out, but popped her effort straight up as it landed in the net minder s hands. After UCLA nearly made it 2-0 via a drive off the crossbar during the 73rd minute, UT junior midfielder Lindsey Meyer forced another save by flicking a header on frame off a long free kick by Smith. The Bruins managed a trio of shots down the stretch, forcing a great diving stop by Smith, but could add no more to their lead in settling for the one-goal victory. 12 MATCH 10 TEXAS at Texas State San Marcos, Texas - Sept. 21, TEXAS UCF Goals from sophomore forward Jasmine Hart and senior midfielder Sharis Lachappelle powered Texas (5-3-2) return to the win column as UT defeated Texas State (5-3-1), 2-0. The Longhorns out-shot the Bobcats by a total, while managing an 8-3 advantage on corner kicks. The goals for Hart and Lachappelle were their second and first of the campaign, respectively. Junior goalkeeper Abby Smith equaled a career-high by making eight saves in the contest, equaling her output against Texas Tech back on Oct. 12, Inspired by one of the program s largest crowds in history (1,153), the Bobcats had the best of the early going. The TSU offense owned the majority of the possession over the first four minutes but failed to register a single shot. Texas soon cranked up the offensive pressure, and it wasn t long until the dynamic forward duo of Kelsey Shimmick and Hart did grant the Longhorns the lead. Shimmick made a bombing foray up the left side and crossed to the middle. Hart battled her marker about seven yards out to finish off a side-footed effort that just trickled across the line at 13:27 to grant Texas a 1-0 lead. Texas had another great chance in the 39th minute as substitute Katie Gernsbacher fought a defender up the right wing before crossing a ball into the 18. Her pass ended up right at the feet of freshman forward Olivia Brook, but the Houston, Texas, native s shot from about 10 yards out in the middle traveled right at keeper Caitlynn Rinehart for a save. Corner kicks have been the lifeblood of the Longhorn offense in, and at 60:11, one paid dividends. Chantale Campbell took the kick from the right corner, and her cross located Lachappelle. The senior midfielder headed home from 12 yards out to grant Texas a 2-0 lead. Over the next few minutes, UT nearly added to their lead but were twice denied by the woodwork. Hart fired a shot from the left wing at 60:46 that rattled off the crossbar and Shimmick followed soon after at 63:41 with a drive from the right side that hit the underside of the bar, bounced straight down near the line and was cleared. With 17:30 left, Texas State s Chandler Cooney registered back-to-back shots to force one Smith save. No long after that incident, Smith fumbled a cross briefly and was forced to race out to mark Maddie Nichols, who had taken possession, stepfor-step. With the goal effectively uncovered at 81:30, Nichols lobbed a shot that was cleared off the line via header by junior midfielder Lindsey Meyer. From there Texas worked hard to run out the clock, securing the squad s fifth victory of the campaign via the 2-0 win over the Bobcats. MATCH 11 #6 Texas Tech at TEXAS Austin, Texas - Sept. 26, #6 Texas Tech TEXAS A golden goal seven minutes into the first overtime, from the prolific foot of freshman forward Olivia Brook, proved the difference at Mike A. Myers Stadium as Texas (6-3-2) handed No. 6 Texas Tech (9-1-0) its first loss of the season, 1-0 (OT). The win marked the first for the Longhorns over a top-10 team since recording a 1-0 triumph over No. 10 BYU back on Sept. 20, The sixth-ranked Red Raiders were also the highest-rated opponent UT soccer has defeated since the Burnt Orange & White knocked off No. 5 Oklahoma State on Oct. 24, 2010, 1-0. For Brook the goal marked her team-leading sixth score of the campaign, while sophomore forward Jasmine Hart was credited with her squad-best fifth assist and sophomore defender Isabelle Kerr earned her initial helper of the year. Approaching the seventh minute, the midfield became a battlefield as both teams turned up the physical play. Off a UT corner, Texas senior defender Brooke Gilbert found herself in front of the keeper and blasted a point blank header that Lauren Watson, TTU s netminder, was barely able to send away from goal. Texas Tech s forward Janine Beckie, who fired a match-high 10 total shots, swiftly found some space to register consecutive dangerous shots from the right side. She ripped the ball twice, the first time wide and the second time straight to Smith as the Plano, Texas, native was able to control the shot. The Red Raiders best opportunity of the half came at 17:21 in the form of a solid through ball aimed for Beckie. The forward out ran two Texas defenders to position herself one-on-one against Smith at the left post, but Texas netminder made a miraculous deflection to clear the ball away. In her first career start, Texas forward Morgan Murphy almost broke the scoreless deadlock at 18:38 as her drive from the right side of the 18 had to be tipped over the crossbar by a leaping Watson. In the 62th minute, Hart almost took Watson by surprise between the pipes by launching a dangerous shot from the left side of the field across the goal mouth that forced an equally impressive two-hand diving save. While both teams had chances down the stretch in regulation, neither squad managed a single shot on goal over the last 20:58 as overtime would prove necessary. When the first period of overtime began, Texas displayed the strong effort that has characterized the team throughout the year. It was finally at 97:00 when the effort finally paid dividends on the scoreboard. After Smith passed the ball upfield to Kerr, the defender located Hart in some space. The Haltom City, Texas, product chested the ball down and fed Brook out on the right wing. After one quick dribble, Brook launched a shot that nestled into the upper left corner of the twine to set off Longhorn jubilation. MATCH 12 #17 West Virginia at TEXAS Austin, Texas - Sept. 28, #17 West Virginia TEXAS Goals from West Virginia s Kelsie Maloney and Ashley Lawrence proved the difference as the 17th-ranked Mountaineers (8-2-2, Big 12) defeated Texas (6-4-2-, Big 12), 2-0. WVU out-shot the Longhorns by a total for the match and led in corner kicks, 7-4. UT managed a 10-7 advantage in total shots and a 7-3 disparity in shots on frame, however, over the second 45 minutes of play. As soon as the ball started rolling, West Virginia displayed confidence on the pitch by getting off to a fast start and not letting Texas settle into the game. Over the first 5:52 of the match, the Mountaineers managed three shots, two of which were saved by Abby Smith, and a pair of corner kicks. After 20 minutes of play and a nice Longhorn defensive effort, Texas began finding rhythm and creating lanes to serve the ball up field. During the 26th minute, senior Cierra Grubbs gave the team an offensive spark, showing great footwork and elusiveness to shake off two defenders and set up a corner kick. Off the feed into the middle, the ball bounced out to Whitney Jaynes, and she fired a left-footed shot that traveled wide right. With the Mountaineers pushing strongly over the last minutes of the half, they were able to drive the middle of the field and feed a ball to Maloney on the right side. She created a little separation and ripped a shot that looked as if it would travel right into the waiting arms of Smith in net. The shot took a small deflection off a Texas defender, however, and that proved just enough to push the ball past UT s goalkeeper at 42:27 for a 1-0 lead. The Longhorns opened of the second half looking revitalized and focused on making a comeback. UT got off to a great start just 1:26 into the new stanza as sophomore midfielder Julia Dyche fired a blast from long distance that barely sailed left of the post. In the 60th minute freshman forward Olivia Brook made a solid run up the left side. Her feed to Jaynes allowed the senior defender the chance to fire on net, but again WVU s Hannah Steadman made the save for the Mountaineers. The WVU advantage doubled at 61:15 as a pass to the middle of the 18 located the feet of Lawrence. She turned and dribbled quickly to her right before firing back into the left side of the netting to make it 2-0. Texas refused to go down without a fight as Grubbs forced a save at 61:31. Texas junior forward Chantale Campbell nearly tucked a ball in at the left post at 66:29, but a Mountaineer player dove to register a team save and had a teammate promptly clear the ball away. Down the stretch, shots from Brook (69:38), Isabelle Kerr (76:04) and Campbell (83:12) all traveled on frame, but again found the waiting arms of Steadman as West Virginia completed its two-goal victory. 13 MATCH 13 TEXAS at Iowa State Ames, Iowa - Oct. 3, TEXAS Iowa State With a match-time temperature of 45 degrees, occasional wind gusts topping 30 mph and wind chills hovering in the low 30 s at the Cyclone Sports Complex, Texas fought past both the elements and Iowa State in securing an important Big 12 Conference victory, 1-0. The Longhorns out-shot Iowa State by a 24-6 total, including a commanding 13-2 over the second 45 minutes of action, and 8-3 on shots on goal. Texas, which entered the match ranked second in NCAA Division I in earning corner kicks, managed a 13-1 advantage over ISU in the category. The winning goal was scored at 69:06 by Texas junior midfielder Lindsey Meyer, her second goal of the campaign, off assists from senior defender Brooke Gilbert and junior forward Chantale Campbell. UT just missed a glorious chance during the 16th minute as Sharis Lachappelle made a quick run up the left wing and crossed to the far post. Olivia Brook was making a run up the middle, and while unmarked, came up about a foot short of reaching the pass and having a point-blank opportunity to score the match s first goal. The ball eventually rolled out over the right sideline for a throw-in. Iowa State missed a golden opportunity of its own in the 25th minute as a pass ended up at the feet of Hayley Womack in the middle of the 18. In some space 14 yards out, her right-footed shot cut too far to the right and past the post for a harmless goal kick. Another dangerous sequence saw Texas get close to breaking in front in the 54th minute as junior forward Kelsey Shimmick dribbled to her left, inside of a defender on the right side, and launched a right-footed shot on frame. The windaltered drive was blocked, ricocheting out in the middle of the six-yard box. A Cyclone defender attempted to clear the ball over the top of goal, but her clearance attempt struck hard off the crossbar, bouncing back into play. UT couldn t manage a follow-up shot, however, as Iowa State finally managed to move the ball up-field out of danger. The breakthrough finally came at 69:06 as Texas started the decisive play by earning one of its trademark corners. Campbell delivered a perfect ball from the right corner to the far post where Gilbert headed the ball back across the face. The ball briefly connected with Meyer s leg, diverting the sphere into the twine for a 1-0 lead. One nervy moment remained for the Horns in the 87th minute as Iowa State earned its only corner kick of the match. Womack served the ball in from the left corner to the near post, but a Cyclone header into the middle was quickly cleared away by Texas to seal the 1-0 victory. MATCH 14 #11 Kansas at TEXAS Austin, Texas - Oct. 10, #11 Kansas TEXAS A 63rd-minute strike from Kansas forward Ashley Williams proved the difference as the No. 11 Jayhawks (14-1-0, Big 12) remained unbeaten in Big 12 Conference action with a 1-0 victory over Texas (7-5-2, Big 12). The Longhorns out-shot the Jayhawks by a total and 7-4 in shots on goal, while also managing a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. Junior goalkeeper Abby Smith registered three saves for UT, while senior midfielder Sharis Lachappelle led the squad with five total shots, two on frame. The feeling out process began immediately from the opening kick as both teams spent the better part of the opening five minutes battling for possession in the midfield. The Jayhawks best opportunity of the opening 45 minutes came during the 20th-minute. Off a corner, the ball dropped perfectly for Jamie Fletcher right out in front of the goal. Her header was solid, but traveled right into the waiting arms of Smith for a save. The Burnt Orange & White had a golden chance of their own in the 36th-minute, as Kaitlyn Stroud made a mistake on a goal kick, sending the ball directly to Chantale Campbell s feet about 38 yards out in the middle of the pitch. The Texas forward appeared a bit surprised and tried to react promptly, but immediate pressure from a Kansas defender made her rush a shot that ventured wide of net. Texas best opportunity of the first half came off of a long free kick taken from deep on the right wing. Julia Dyche lofted a ball into the middle of the 18 that was punched out by Stroud. After bouncing around among several players, it finally found its way to Longhorn freshman Morgan Murphy. The Plano, Texas, native hit the ball in stride, forcing the Jayhawk keeper to leap high to make a save. Kansas came extremely close to breaking the scoreless dead-lock at 58:16 as a pass by Liana Salazar from the right wing to the left post found Williams, but her sliding effort with her left foot drifted just wide of the post. Just 4:33 later, the Longhorns weren t as fortunate as Salazar again found Williams, this time just outside the right top of the box. Williams was in some space, turned and decisively struck the ball into the upper left corner to put the Jayhawks on top 1-0. Searching for an equalizer, the Longhorns began upping their offensive pressure. Back-to-back shots by Cierra Grubbs and Dyche in the 73rdminute were blocked, and senior defender Whitney Jaynes came close at 82:46 as her lengthy effort from well out on the left wing traveled just high of the right corner. For Campbell the score was her third of the campaign, while junior forward Kelsey Shimmick was credited with her second assist of the year. With UT having the run of play over the first 25-plus minutes, it proved to be a set piece that finally broke the dead-lock. 14 MATCH 16 UALR at TEXAS Austin, Texas - Oct. 20, UALR TEXAS Behind a season-high 29-shot effort and goals from seniors Sharis Lachappelle and Julie Arnold, Texas (8-6-2) moved back into the win column with a dominant, 2-0 victory over Arkansas-Little Rock in a rare Monday night non-conference match-up at Mike A. Myers Stadium. For Lachappelle a successful penalty kick just 4:43 into the contest marked her second goal of the campaign, while for Arnold, her score at the 70:49 mark was the first of the defender s career in the Burnt Orange & White. UT out-shot the Trojans by a commanding 29-3 total and 11-1 in shots on goal while totaling a 12-0 advantage on corner kicks. Texas senior goalkeeper Ava Vogel got the start in net in relief of Abby Smith, earning her second career shutout while forced to make just one stop. Just three minutes in, a Texas cross from the right wing towards the right post was finished in a crowd of players via a running chip. The Longhorns out-shot the hosts by a 10-6 total and managed a 3-2 advantage on corner kicks. Senior defender Whitney Jaynes was credited with her second assist of the season on Murphy s score, while junior goalkeeper Abby Smith made two saves in earning her 22nd career shutout and Texas eighth blanking of the season. Texas stunned the Crimson-clad crowd by needing just 45 seconds to register the match s first goal. From out on the left wing, Jaynes delivered a perfect cross towards the top of the sixyard box. The Burnt Orange & White out-shot the Bears by a total and managed a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks. Myers Stadium and the woodwork twice unkind to the home team via UT shots ringing off both the post and crossbar, Oklahoma State (10-8-1, Big 12) forward Courtney Dike registered the match-winning goal at 88:27 as the Cowgirls defeated Texas (10-7-2, Big 12), 2-1. UT junior goalkeeper Abby Smith established a new single-match career-high with 10 saves against the Cowgirls, while junior midfielder Lindsey Meyer led the Longhorns offense with six shots, two on frame. Friday s match was wide-open from the very start with Texas having the best of the early going. Sophomore midfielder Julia Dyche blasted a shot off the left post just 2:11 into the contest. It appeared that Texas had taken the lead during the sixth minute as a great combination play from Dyche to junior forward Kelsey Shimmick was headed into the twine from 10 yards out by senior midfielder Sharis Lachappelle. Unfortunately for the Burnt Orange & White, the linesman s flag was up signaling offsides to nullify the goal. With the Cowgirl offense ratcheting up the pressure in the offensive third, it was Texas that gifted OSU its first score of the contest. On a cross in from the left wing, an attempted clearance via header near the left post was accidentally directed into the Horns own net for a 1-0 Oklahoma State advantage at 12:41. It was Shimmick that helped turn the tide for the Longhorns, firing a shot that was blocked in the 37th-minute before successfully drawing a foul inside the box at 38:34 to force the referee to point to the spot. Meyer stepped up and buried the penalty kick into the left side of the twine past the diving keeper, tying the count at 1-1. Texas nearly grabbed the lead with 4:55 left in the opening half as a shot from a tough angle on the right wing by sophomore forward Jasmine Hart just skimmed by the left post. UT had the best chance over the initial 16 minutes of the second half, however, as a pass by Hart from the right end line found junior forward Chantale Campbell making a late run to the top of the 18. The London, Ontario, Canada, native teed up a shot but got just underneath the ball to send a great look over the bar. It would be the last few minutes of regulation, however, that proved perhaps the most enthralling of the entire match. Back on the other end, failing to clear its lines came back to haunt the Longhorns defense as a ball ricocheting around among players out in front dropped to the feet of Dike just outside the six-yard box.
