The Owls won 1-0 in the last official meeting in Houston, Texas, back on Sept. 10, The two teams are familiar having recently scrimmaged each other during spring seasons. TEXAS LONGHORN QUICK KICKS... Texas will be making its 11th all-time appearance in the NCAA Tournament and the first since the arrival of head coach Angela Kelly prior to the 2012 campaign. The Longhorns are overall in all NCAA Tournament matches and 4-6 in opening round contests. UT has won three of its last five NCAA Tournament First Round contests (W , 2007, 2008), but has dropped its last two (L , 2011). This will mark the sixth NCAA Tournament contest Texas has hosted in Austin, Texas, and the first since hosting a third round match-up against Portland (lost 2-0) back in UT is 2-3 all-time in home NCAA Tournament match-ups. Fans at Friday s NCAA Tournament match will likely see a lot of set pieces as Rice and Texas rate as two of the top four corner kick-producing teams in NCAA Division I. The Owls enter the contest ranked second in the nation with 162 corners earned, while the Longhorns sit fourth with 145 corners. Texas ventures into its NCAA match against Rice very close to equaling a pair of program single-season shutout marks. As a team, the Horns boast nine blankings, good for the third-most in a single campaign in program history and two from tying the 2008 team (11) for the top spot. Junior goalkeeper Abby Smith has tied a career-high with eight shutouts in and is one from tying Dianna Pfenninger (nine in 2008) for number one all-time in a single season at UT. Texas senior defenders Brooke Gilbert (90 min.), Julie Arnold (90 min.) and Whitney Jaynes (16 min.) are the only Longhorns to have played in Texas last NCAA match back on Nov. 11, 2011 in Columbia, S.C. UT dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision to No. 22 South Carolina that day as the Gamecocks scored just 6:25 in and got a shutout from Sabrina D Angelo. So far this year, Texas is an impressive in matches where it scores at least one goal, including five one-goal victories (at Hawaii - 2-1; vs. #6 Texas Tech OT; at Iowa State - 1-0; at Oklahoma - 1-0; at Baylor - 2-1). The only blemishes out of those 12 occurrences were a 2-2 tie against Arizona State (Aug. 22), a 3-1 loss at TCU (Oct. 17), a 2-1 loss to Oklahoma State (Oct. 31) and the 1-1 tie against #16 Texas Tech on Nov. 5. 4 GAME NOTES OUR NCAA TOURNAMENT HISTORY Texas will be making its 11th all-time appearance in the NCAA Tournament and the first since the arrival of head coach Angela Kelly prior to the 2012 campaign. Its most recent bid came back in 2011 when UT lost a first round match in Columbia, S.C., to No. 22 South Carolina, 1-0. Seniors Julie Arnold (90 min.), Brooke Gilbert (90 min.) and Whitney Jaynes (16 min.) are the only current Longhorns to have played in Texas last NCAA match. THAT S A LOT OF SHUTOUTS! The Longhorns defense has been a strength of the squad all season long with the benefit of having three experienced senior defenders leading a strong four-member backline and one of the best goalkeepers in the nation in junior Abby Smith. That group has helped UT post nine shutouts thus far this season, just two off tying the school mark of 11 set back in A list of the top five single-season shutout totals in school history is below: Total of shutouts Year(s) Accomplished , , 2002, 2004, 2010, 2012, , 1997, 2003, 2005, 2011 **Smith has eight solo shutouts this season, tying her career-high and sitting just one blanking from tying Dianna Pfenninger (nine in 2008) for the single-season shutout record at Texas. NOTICED BY THE NSCAA Texas picked up three votes in the latest Continental Tire/NSCAA Coaches Poll released on Tues., Nov. 11, the most since receiving three votes in the September 2nd rankings when in possession of a overall record. UT also earned one vote in the Oct. 28 poll release. AGAINST THE LONE STAR STATE UNDER KELLY Following the 6-0 rout at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Sept. 5), the 2-0 blanking of Texas State (Sept. 21, the 1-0 (OT) win over #6 Texas Tech (Sept. 26), the 3-1 loss at TCU (Oct. 17), the 2-1 comeback win at Baylor (Oct. 26) and the 1-1 (2OT) tie against #16 Texas Tech in the Big 12 quarterfinals (Nov. 5), Texas, under third year head coach Angela Kelly, is against teams from the state of Texas. UT is a solid 5-1 against Lone Star State squads in the friendly confines of Mike A. Myers Stadium, 4-4 on the road and at neutral sites. Texas is this year in such contests. WE VE PLAYED A SOLID SCHEDULE! Looking at records (as of 11/10), Texas has played 21 matches against teams that have combined to post a overall record (a.631 winning percentage) thus far in. As of Nov. 10, the NCAA rated UT s slate as the 12th-toughest schedule by percentage in Division I and second toughest in the Big 12, behind Oklahoma State (.636). Fourteen of those teams possessed winning records, while two of those squads (UCLA & West Virginia) had lost two or fewer matches. SMITH, LACHAPPELLE, BROOK REAP BIG 12 HONORS Texas had three players named to the various All-Big 12 teams prior to the start of the Big 12 Championship. Junior goalkeeper Abby Smith was tabbed to the first team, her third consecutive Big 12 accolade after second team nods in 2012 & Senior midfielder Sharis Lachappelle followed up two previous selections (2012-2nd; st) with another second team inclusion, while freshman forward Olivia Brook was named to the Big 12 All-Newcomer Team. Texas has boasted at least three players on the all-league teams in each of the last five seasons and for 13 of the last 14 years. GETTING IT DONE IN THE CLASSROOM! According to a release from the conference office, 12 members of the Texas soccer team were tabbed to the various Academic All-Big 12 teams in, tied for the second-most in the league behind Baylor (13). Sophomore Isabelle Kerr, previously tabbed as a Capital One Academic All-District 7 selection by CoSIDA, led the way for the Longhorns in earning first-team honors as one of just six nominated Big 12 players to carry a perfect 4.0 GPA (finance). She was joined on the first team by senior Julie Arnold (B.S. in sport management/pursuing master s in education), sophomore Julia Dyche (business), senior Brooke Gilbert (applied movement science), senior Cierra Grubbs (psychology/pre-medicine), sophomore Jasmine Hart (business), senior Sharis Lachappelle (mathematics/teaching), junior Ali Schmalz (psychology), junior Abby Smith (physical culture & sports, minor in communication) and senior Ava Vogel (physical culture & sports). Juniors Chantale Campbell (applied learning & development) and Lindsey Meyer (public relations) represented UT as part of the second team. For Arnold and Gilbert, the league academic award marked their third consecutive first-team inclusion. Grubbs, Lachappelle, Schmalz, Meyer and Smith all earned their second career Academic All-Big 12 plaudits. STRONG SO FAR ON PENALTIES With ties in the NCAA Tournament settled through the use of penalty kicks, Texas is plenty prepared for such an instance after their Big 12 Championship experience. UT topped #16 Texas Tech in a quarterfinal penalty shootout, 6-5, before falling to #9 West Virginia in a semifinal shootout, 6-5. Combining PK s from the regular season with postseason shootout results, Texas is a sparkling 15-for-18 (83% The Breakdown Game Type Overall Big 12 Home matches Away matches Neutral site matches Day matches Night matches Weekend matches Weekday matches Against ranked opponents Against Texas teams One-goal matches Two-goal matches Three + goal matches Overtime matches Month In August In September In October In November Scoring Texas scores first Texas scores 1 goal Texas scores 2 goals Texas scores 3 goals Texas scores 4+ goals Opponent scores first Opponent scores 1 goal Opponent scores 2 goals Opponent scores 3 goals Opponent scores 4+ goals Penalties Texas has more fouls Opponent has more fouls Fouls are tied Texas has more cautions Opp. has more cautions Cautions are tied Half-By-Half Leading after 1st half Trailing after 1st half Tied after 1st half Tied after 2nd half Shooting Texas out-shoots opp Opp. out-shoots Texas Shots are tied TX has more shots on goal Opp. has more shots on goal Shots on goal are tied Texas has 10 or fewer shots Opp. has 10 or fewer shots Texas has shots Opponent has shots Texas has 16+ or more shots Opp has 16+ or more shots Texas Soccer Match Notes 3

success rate). UT was sent to the spot four times in the regular season and scored successfully on all four of those spot kicks. Brooke Gilbert finished one each in wins over Texas A&M-CC and Montana, Sharis Lachappelle blasted a PK home against UALR and Lindsey Meyer tucked one into the net against Oklahoma State. UT has won five of its seven all-time PK sessions in the postseason (1-0 in NCAA play...see page 7 of the notes for NCAA Tournament records). SPREADING THE HEROICS AROUND Texas has had no shortage of heroines this season as nine different players have been credited with at least one match-winning goal. In fact, the only player with more than one match-winning score is junior midfielder Lindsey Meyer who owns two. Most recently, freshman forward Morgan Murphy (at Oklahoma) and sophomore midfielder Julia Dyche (at Baylor) picked up crucial winning goals for the Horns. JUST GIVE US ONE GOAL... So far this season, Texas is an impressive in matches where it scores at least one goal, including five one-goal victories (at Hawaii - 2-1; vs. #6 Texas Tech OT; at Iowa State - 1-0; at Oklahoma - 1-0; at Baylor - 2-1). The only blemishes out of those occurrences were a 2-2 tie against Arizona State back on Aug. 22, a 3-1 loss at TCU on Oct. 17, a 2-1 defeat against Oklahoma State on Oct. 31 and a 1-1 tie against #16 Texas Tech (Nov. 5) in the Big 12 Championship quarterfinals. SMITH HAD QUITE A NIGHT Junior goalkeeper Abby Smith had quite a night in the 2-1 loss to Oklahoma State on Halloween. The Plano, Texas, native set a new personal single-match career-high with 10 saves and now possesses 92 saves for the season, good for first in the Big 12 and a tie for seventh in stops on the all-time Texas single-season list. HOLDING OPPONENTS UNDER 10 SHOTS IS KEY During head coach Angela Kelly s three seasons in charge of the Longhorns program, defense has played a big role in the squad s success. Texas owns an mark when holding opponents under 10 shots in a match. UT was 6-3 in 2012, in 2013 and is unbeaten at thus far in when holding its foes to nine or fewer total shots. This season in those instances, the Horns tied Arizona State (eight shots) and defeated Hawai i (eight shots), Nevada (nine shots), Texas A&M-CC (three shots), Montana (six shots), Iowa State (six shots), UALR (three shots) and at Oklahoma (six shots). SCORING FIRST SETS THE RIGHT TONE In three seasons under coach Angela Kelly, the Longhorns have posted an mark when scoring the initial goal of the contest. UT went last year when scoring first and are this year when registering the match s initial tally. KEEP THE CROOKED NUMBERS OFF THE SCOREBOARD Under the guidance of head coach Angela Kelly, Texas boasts a lot of success when the defense keeps the crooked numbers off the opponent s side of the scoreboard. Since the beginning of the 2012 campaign, the Longhorns have limited the opposition to a single goal or less in 45 of 61 possible matches. In those instances, Texas owns a overall record and has gone since beginning the 2013 season. NSCAA Coaches Poll Top 25 November 11 Rk. School Pts. Rec. Last 1. HISTORY IN THE BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIP Texas has appeared in every Big 12 Championship dating back to the 1996 season (19 appearances) and owns a overall record with two titles (2006, 2007). The Horns own two semifinal appearances ( tied TCU 1-1, lost on PK shootout, 4-2 & - tied #9 West Virginia, lost on PK shootout, 6-5) since the arrival of Angela Kelly to take over the program prior to the 2012 campaign. UT was in the event with a 1-1 (2OT) tie and 6-5 PK win over #16 Texas Tech in the quarterfinals and a 0-0 (2OT) tie with a 6-5 PK loss to #9 West Virginia in the semifinals. CHANTALE SEEMS TO LIKE BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIP PLAY Texas junior forward Chantale Campbell could get used to playing in the Big 12 Championship. The London, Ontario, Canada, native has totaled two goals, an assist and gone 2-for-2 in shootout PK s over five career matches in the league s annual showdown. She dished an assist in a 3-0 rout of Oklahoma in 2012, scored Texas lone goal in a 2-1 defeat to Oklahoma State in 2013 and both scored a goal and put home a PK in advancing past #16 Texas Tech in the quarterfinals. She currently ranks in a tie for fourth in most Big 12 Championship points (five) in Texas program history. GILBERT S BEEN GREAT! Texas senior defender Brooke Gilbert was honored on Mon., Oct. 27, for her efforts in crucial Big 12 league victories at Oklahoma & Baylor. The Snohomish, Wash., native was named to the Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week as well as the Big 12 Conference s Defensive Player of the Week. She played all 180 possible minutes in the two matches as part of the defensive backline, helping limit rival OU to just six shots in a 1-0 shutout and dished an assist on Lindsey Meyer s match-tying goal at 74:27 of the 2-1 win at Baylor. Gilbert has been quite the offensive contributor for the Longhorns during the campaign, netting a single season career-high-tying four goals and registering two assists for a career-best 10 total points. Her contributions come despite serving as a starting defender in the backline for the Burnt Orange & White, making her one of the highest-scoring defenders in the Big 12. West Virginia midfielder/defender Michaela Abam posted seven regular-season goals while splitting time between offensive & defensive positions. TEXAS STATS FOLLOWING A LOSS UNDER KELLY Texas owns a overall record in matches following a loss under the guidance of Texas head coach Angela Kelly. UT was 4-6 in such instances back during her initial season of 2012 and after a loss in After dropping its season finale to Oklahoma State to conclude the 2013 campaign, Texas started with a 2-2 (2OT) tie against Arizona State in Waipahu, Hi. UT is in its last 12 true road matches, including a 6-2 record in with wins at Hawai i (2-1), at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, at Texas State (2-0), at Iowa State (1-0), at Oklahoma (1-0) and at Baylor (2-1), but a 2-0 loss at USF and a 3-1 defeat at TCU. In neutral site matches under Kelly, the Longhorns are with a tie this year against Arizona State back in the season-opener in Waipahu, Hi., a 2-0 loss to UCF on Sept. 12, a 1-1 tie against #16 Texas Tech in the Big 12 quarterfinals (Nov. 5) and a 0-0 (2OT) tie against #9 West Virginia in the Big 12 semifinals (Nov. 7). TEXAS LIKES TO GET YOU CORNERED The Longhorns enter the NCAA Tournament ranked FOURTH in the NCAA Division I statistics in corner kicks and now have 145 over 21 matches for an 6.9 corner-per-match average. With a successful run in the NCAA Tournament, this year s squad could still break the school record of 162 set back in Texas has scored FOUR TIMES off corner kicks this season with Brooke Gilbert finishing the first two scores during the 5-1 win over Nevada on Aug. 31, Sharis Lachappelle heading in a corner taken by Chantale Campbell during the second half of the 2-0 win at Texas State (Sept. 21) and Lindsey Meyer finishing off another Campbell corner for the match-winner on Oct. 3 at Iowa State. Junior goalkeeper Abby Smith has truly become the go-to player for Texas between the pipes, although her lengthy streak in net ended for precautionary reasons late in the first half at TCU on Oct. 17. The Plano, Texas, native had played every available minute of UT s last 46 matches dating back to Sept. 14, 2012, versus Fresno State, a stretch of an incredible 4331 minutes and 49 seconds or just over 72 total hours! Since missing the UALR match on Oct. 20, Smith has since returned to goal while playing all 490 possible minutes over the last five matches. THERE S NO PLACE LIKE HOME Dorothy once said there s no place like home. The Texas soccer squad takes that line from The Wizard of Oz to heart as in two-plus seasons under coach Angela Kelly, the Longhorns have posted a (.650) record in the friendly confines of Myers Stadium and are over the last 19 home matches. Last year, UT recorded a mark in home contests, including a 4-0 record in Big 12 games. The Horns saw the end of their 13-match home unbeaten streak this season with a hard-fought, 1-0 loss to No. 1 UCLA on Sept. 19. In the next home match, Texas got back on track, however, with a 1-0 (OT) upset over #6 Texas Tech. OUR HISTORY IN BIG 12 OPENERS Since becoming a member of the Big 12 Conference prior to the 1996 season, Texas soccer holds an record all-time in its league openers (UT was 1-0 in its lone soccer lidlifter in the Southwest Conference). The Longhorns now possess a mark in Big 12 schedule openers at home. Texas has won all three Big 12 Conference openers under the guidance of third year head coach Angela Kelly ( at Iowa State, W, 4-0; TCU, W, 2-0, - #6 Texas Tech, W, 1-0 OT). Texas might have lost a hard-fought, 1-0 decision to No. 1 UCLA on Sept. 19, but the Longhorns played the defending national champions as tough as anyone to that point in. The Bruins entered the match at UT having allowed just 18 total shots and four shots on goal COMBINED over seven matches. The Burnt Orange & White managed to put three shots on frame, the most of any team to that point in the season, and tallied five total shots to equal the highest single match output by any squad to that point. ABBY NAMED TO THE TDS TEAM OF THE WEEK! For her outstanding efforts against No. 22 Arkansas and Nevada, junior goalkeeper Abby Smith was selected as the netminder on the Sept. 3 version of Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week. She started off the weekend by making a season-best seven saves in shutting out the nationally-ranked Razorbacks during a 0-0 (2OT) deadlock. Smith followed that up with five saves in UT s 5-1 rout of Nevada. OUTSTANDING OFFENSE FROM OLIVIA! Texas freshman forward Olivia Brook has wasted little time demonstrating her scoring potential for the Longhorns by finishing a team-leading six goals through her first 20 career matches, including her first career match-winner via golden goal at 97:00 of the 1-0 (OT) upset of #6 Texas Tech (Sept. 26). For her efforts against Texas A&M-CC and Montana, the Houston, Texas, product was honored as the Big 12 Conference s Newcomer of the Week (Sept. 9). In the history of the UT program, NO FRESHMAN HAD EVER STARTED OFF HER CAREER WITH FIVE GOALS IN HER FIRST FIVE MATCHES UNTIL BROOK ACCOMPLISHED THE FEAT THIS SEASON. Before Brook s start, three Texas rookies had managed four goals in their initial five contests: Courtney Goodson (2008), Kelly Wilson (2001) and Alanna Makinano (1996). Brook scored two goals each in back-to-back matches against Nevada and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. AN IMPRESSIVE OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION! Texas totaled 11 goals combined over two matches against Nevada (5-1) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (6-0). It had been almost 11 years since the Longhorn offense put together a two-match scoring output like that as the last occurrence came back over Oct , 2003 in victories over Baylor (4-0) and Texas Tech (7-0). The outburst wasn t close to the all-time program mark, however, as Texas totaled a staggering 17 goals in a two-match stretch over Sept , 1997, against Oklahoma (W, 9-0) and Oklahoma State (W, 8-0). ONE IS GOOD BUT TWO IS BETTER... Senior defender Brooke Gilbert and freshman forward Olivia Brook decided that one goal wasn t enough for them during the 5-1 victory over Nevada at Mike A. Myers Stadium on Aug. 31. The duo each registered the first two-goal matches of their careers to power then the largest UT Texas Soccer Match Notes 6

After Nevada clawed back within one goal at 2-1 in the 18th minute, Brook and Gilbert combined for three scores at 37:23, 50:16 (Gilbert) and 51:24 to put the match away for the Horns. SMITH NAMED ALL-AMERICAN BY COLLEGESPORTSMADNESS Junior goalkeeper Abby Smith picked up an early-season All-American nod from CollegeSportsMadness. com, as the Plano, Texas, native was chosen as the fourth-team keeper behind only UCLA s Katelyn Rowland (1st), South Carolina s Sabrina D Angelo (2nd) and Georgetown s Emma Newins (3rd). 11 MATCH 1 TEXAS vs. Arizona State Waipahu, Hi. - Aug. 22, 1 2 OT OT2 F Arizona St TEXAS Junior goalkeeper Abby Smith and freshman forward Olivia Brook each tallied a pair of first-half goals to lead the Texas Soccer team to a 2-2 tie against Arizona State at Waipi o Peninsula Stadium in the Outrigger Resorts Shootout. Texas opened the scoring in the 25th minute (24:58) when Smith took a free kick from 45 yards out that found its way past ASU keeper Chandler Morris. The score marked Smith s second career goal, as she previously connected on a similar free kick from behind the midfield stripe in last year s home contest against South Florida (Aug. 25, 2013). The Longhorns increased their cushion to 2-0 just before the end of the first half. Brook fired a shot which deflected off Morris and found the lower right portion of the net in the 44th minute (43:38). The Sun Devils trimmed the deficit in half in the 62nd minute (61:25), when McKenzie Berryhill connected on a header off a feed from Lucy Lara. Berryhill then scored the equalizer on a penalty kick with less than six minutes remaining in regulation (84:29). Senior midfielder Sharis Lachappelle nearly put the Horns back in front late in the contest, but her shot in the 88th minute hit the crossbar. Neither team could find the back of the net during the two 10-minute overtime periods. Smith played the entire 110 minutes in goal for Texas and recorded three saves. Texas ASU Shots 9 8 SOG 5 5 Saves 3 3 Corners 8 5 Fouls MATCH 2 TEXAS at Hawai i Waipahu, Hi. - Aug. 25, 1 2 OT OT2 F TEXAS Hawai i Senior defender Whitney Jaynes scored an unassisted goal in the 73rd minute to lead the Texas Soccer team to a 2-1 victory against Hawai i at Waipi o Peninsula Stadium in the Outrigger Resorts Shootout. The Longhorns improved to on the year with the win, while the Rainbow Wahine fell to 0-2. Hawaii opened the scoring in the fifth minute (4:12) when Krystal Pascua gathered the ball with her back to the goal, turned and directed her shot into the upper left part of the net. Texas drew even in the 22nd minute (21:44) when junior Lindsey Meyer slotted the ball into the box and sophomore Julia Dyche found the net from 12 yards out for her first goal of the year and second of her collegiate career. Jaynes then scored the game-winning goal in the 73rd minute (72:47) when her shot from outside the 18-yard box found the upper right part of the net. This marked Jaynes first goal of the year and second of her career. Junior goalkeeper Abby Smith played the entire 90 minutes in goal for Texas and recorded two saves. Although the total shots were even at 8-8, the Horns recorded a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal and a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. In the decisive second half, UT registered a 6-2 margin in shots and a 5-2 margin in corner kicks. Texas Hawai i Shots 8 8 SOG 7 3 Saves 2 5 Corners 6 3 Fouls MATCH 3 No. 25/22 Arkansas at TEXAS Austin, Texas - Aug. 29, 1 2 OT OT2 F #25 Arkansas TEXAS After waiting out a two-hour and threeminute lightning delay during Friday s event opener between Stephen F. Austin and Nevada, Texas (1-0-2) christened its home campaign by battling No. 22 Arkansas (2-0- 1) to a 0-0 (2OT) draw in front of 1,359 fans at the Mike A. Myers Stadium. The nationally-ranked Razorbacks outshot the Longhorns by a 15-8 total and 7-4 in shots on goal, while UT managed a 7-3 advantage on corners. Texas junior goalkeeper Abby Smith continued her amazing play between the pipes by earning her 16th career shutout on the strength of seven saves. Originally scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. CT, the two teams finally took the pitch at 8:57 p.m. An argument could be made that the lengthy wait affected both teams as neither squad s offense appeared sharp in the early going. Texas finally got its offense untracked around the 13th minute as following a wide shot by forward Kelsey Shimmick, a cross from Lachappelle resulted in a header over the bar by midfielder Lindsey Meyer. Just minutes later the Horns managed three corner kicks in quick succession, but managed just a single shot as sophomore defender Isabelle Kerr s try drifted high. Lachappelle continued wreaking havoc in the midfield towards the end of the opening stanza as a 30th minute left-footed drive and a shot with just 12 seconds remaining forced a pair of stops by Arkansas keeper Cameron Carter as the teams went to the break at 0-0. The match had stretched out at that point as Arkansas nearly caught the Horns on the break in a couple of instances. With neither offense winning the battle of Texas crosses into the middle and Arkansas lobs off long throw-ins, the match would require overtime. In the first OT the Razorbacks managed the only two shots, with the best chance coming on a volleyed drive from the top of the 18 from forward Ashleigh Ellenwood that ventured wide. UA nearly ended things with 7:38 remaining in the second OT as a header by Kelley hit off the crossbar and was cleared out of danger. Smith, who had already scored two goals from her keeper position in her Longhorn career, blasted a free kick on goal with three minutes remaining, but Carter was there to preserve the scoreless deadlock. 12 MATCH 4 Nevada at TEXAS Austin, Texas - Aug. 31, 1 2 OT OT2 F Nevada TEXAS Texas senior defender Brooke Gilbert and freshman forward Olivia Brook each registered the first two-goal matches of their careers and sophomore forward Jasmine Hart dished three assists as the Longhorns (2-0-2) cruised past Nevada (0-3-1) in front of 1,214 at Mike A. Myers Stadium, 5-1. UT dominated the stats, out-shooting the Wolf Pack by a commanding 26-9 total, including 15-2 in the second stanza. Texas also managed 12-6 advantage in shots on frame and led in corners by a staggering 11-1 total. The scoring output marked the first five-goal match for Texas since back on Aug. 28, 2011, vs. Cal State Northridge. Junior forward Chantale Campbell joined Gilbert and Brook in the scoring column by contributing her first goal of the campaign. The offensive fireworks began in earnest during the 17th minute as Texas got on the board for a 1-0 advantage. Dyche took a corner, delivering a feed towards the far post that was headed by Meyer straight back across the goal mouth to Gilbert. Unmarked just six yards out from goal, she easily beat Bryar for the first tally of the match. The advantage expanded to two scores just 50 seconds later as a beautiful pass from Hart found the foot of an onrushing Campbell, and she finished from 12 yards. Nevada raced down the pitch on the re-start, working a give-and-go that saw Daisha Jones- Oglesby feed Chrisalyn Fonte to cut the deficit to 2-1. It wasn t long before Brook restored the Horns two-goal lead. Following a beautiful twopass connection between Hart and Gernsbacher, the Houston, Texas, native headed home a cross into the upper left corner of the goal in the 38th minute. The second stanza proved even more dominant in favor of UT as the Longhorns were credited with the first 14 shots of the final 45 minutes. Searching for more on the scoreboard during the 51st minute, Lachappelle delivered a perfect cross from the right wing towards the far post where Gilbert was lying in wait. The defender leapt high over her marker, heading the ball off the underside of the crossbar and into the far side of the netting to make it 4-1. Just 1:08 later Hart found herself in space about 20 yards out at the top of the box. She unleashed a shot that was parried by Bryar right back out into the middle of the pitch. Brook didn t let the ball drop, volleying a drive past the keeper for UT s fifth score. Nev Texas Shots 9 26 SOG 6 12 Saves 7 5 Corners Fouls MATCH 5 TEXAS at Texas A&M-CC Corpus Christi, Texas - Sept. 5, 1 2 OT OT2 F TEXAS Texas A&M-CC In front of the largest crowd (1,908) in the history of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi soccer program, Texas (3-0-2) remained unbeaten by putting six goals in the net for the first time since the 2007 campaign to defeat the Islanders, 6-0. Prior to the offensive outburst, the last time the Horns scored six times in a single match was back on Sept. 14, 2007, versus University of Texas at San Antonio. UT out-shot TA&M-CC by a commanding 27-3 total and managed a 17-2 advantage on corners. Freshman forward Olivia Brook continued the amazing start to her rookie season in Burnt Orange & White, scoring two more goals and dishing a pair of helpers to give her a team-best five scores and 12 total points in. The Houston, Texas, native is now off the best offensive start for any freshman in Texas soccer program history with five scores over her initial quintet of matches. Senior defender Brooke Gilbert registered her third score, while sophomore forward Jasmine Hart and junior midfielder Lindsey Meyer each tallied their initial goals of the year. Junior midfielder Sharis Lachappelle, Hart and senior defender Whitney Jaynes all recorded single assists. Texas got on the board at the 32:58 mark on a beautiful combination play. Gilbert took a free kick from midfield that dropped at the top of the box. Lachappelle leapt high in the air and headed it to the right side for Brook. The freshman s flick to the middle found Meyer standing about eight yards out, and the Coppell, Texas, product finished her first goal of the season into the lower left corner. Just 2:10 into the second half, Texas got on the board again to nab a 2-0 advantage. Kelsey Shimmick crossed a ball from the right wing to the far post. Brook had the ball land at her feet and fired a quick shot that was saved. The ricochet off the keeper bounced right to Hart out on the right wing, and the Haltom City, Texas, native made her finish look routine from a tough angle. Jaynes started another goal-scoring play in the 60th minute as she came racing up the left wing and crossed a ball in front of the Islander defense. Waiting to blast it home was Brook, who finished into the left side of the netting from 13 yards out to make it 3-0. At 66:04 Hart made a strong run past a defender into the box chasing a loose ball and was tripped up. The referee pointed to the spot, and Gilbert stepped up to bury a penalty kick for a four-score advantage. A little over five minutes later, Hart fed a ball from the middle of the pitch out to Brook on the left wing. The rookie forward drove an amazing shot on net from 30 yards out that just nicked into the upper right corner for a 5-0 lead. The scoring was finalized at 6-0 in the 87th minute as Texas A&M-CC s Daniela Gonzalez headed a UT cross into her own net. Texas TAMUCC Shots 27 3 SOG 14 1 Saves 1 8 Corners Fouls MATCH 6 Montana at TEXAS Austin, Texas - Sept. 7, 1 2 OT OT2 F Montana TEXAS Texas got a clutch penalty kick goal at 66:14 from senior defender Brooke Gilbert and a clinching, 90th-minute score from junior forward Chantale Campbell to continue its unbeaten start to the campaign with a 2-0 victory over Montana (3-3-0). At 4-0-2, the Longhorns remain unbeaten through their opening six matches to start a season for only the second time in program history after the 2008 UT squad began the year at Gilbert now possesses four goals on the year, two of those of the penalty kick variety, on just five total shots, while Campbell s score marked her second of the season. Junior goalkeeper Abby Smith made a pair of saves in posting her third clean sheet of the season and the 18th of her career. Texas out-shot the Grizzlies by a total of 23-6 for the match with a 14-1 advantage over the second 45 minutes of play. UT also managed a commanding 10-1 lead on penalty kicks. Montana wasted little time making its presence felt over the first 8:38 as UM managed three of its six total shots in the match and both of its drives on frame. The most troubling was a blast by forward Mackenzie Akins, just 1:32 in, that rattled off the crossbar. The best chance for Texas during the opening stanza came at 17:48 as a beautiful feed from Campbell out on the right wing located freshman forward Olivia Brook in a lot of space about 14 yards out in the middle of the 18. The Houston, Texas, native measured her header, but sent it just over the crossbar for a goal kick. Montana again threatened during the 33rd minute. Substitute Savannah Witt corralled a ball in the middle of the 18, turned quickly against her marker and fired a shot that rattled off the outside of the left upright as the two teams would eventually head to the break scoreless. With the Longhorn offense buzzing in UM territory in the 60th minute, Dyche took the ball to the right end line and crossed to the far post. Lachappelle got to it a half a step late as her header drifted just wide of the left upright. Finally in the 67th minute, Dyche took a feed from Campbell on the right side of the 18 and moved quickly towards the middle of the pitch. After eluding a defender, the Southlake, Texas, product was taken down, giving the referee no alternative but to point to the spot. Gilbert was again called upon to finish off the spot kick and tucked it away in the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. The Grizzlies weren t going to go away without a fight as a troublesome shot by UM s Akins at the 68:13 mark was tipped over the crossbar by Smith. With the Horns firing away down the stretch, the insurance goal finally came with just seconds remaining. 13 MATCH 7 TEXAS vs. UCF Tampa, Fla. - Sept. 12, 1 2 OT OT2 F TEXAS UCF In a match that was broken into two distinct parts by a one-hour and 45-minute lightning delay, Texas (4-1-2) suffered its first defeat of the campaign, dropping a 2-0 decision to UCF (4-2-0) at Corbett Soccer Stadium in Tampa, Fla. The Longhorns out-shot the Knights by a 10-5 total over the second half with six of those drives coming over the final 17:37 of action following the weather delay. With UT pressing hard late for an equalizer, UCF sealed the triumph at 86:15 by adding a goal into an empty net via a quick counterattack. The best chance for either team in the opening 45 minutes came during the 23rd minute as a cross from the left wing to the middle landed right at the feet of midfielder Amanda Wilkin. She fired a point-blank shot from about eight yards out that was saved by Abby Smith, but the rebound bounced straight back out. Wilkin corralled the ball and fired another shot that was held by Smith to end the threat. UCF wasted no time in grabbing the lead out of the halftime break. A Texas foul on forward Tatiana Coleman set the Knights up in prime position just two yards outside the top of the 18. Jennifer Martin stepped up to the ball and curled a perfect shot into the upper right corner at 47:24 for a 1-0 lead. The Longhorns came exceptionally close to tying the contest during the 63rd minute. Sharis Lachappelle made a great move to split a pair of defenders on the left wing and crossed a terrific ball to the middle. The pass located Jasmine Hart in prime real estate about 10 yards out in the middle of the 18. Unfortunately, the Haltom City, Texas, product s well-measured header traveled just inches over the crossbar, settling into the top netting. With 17:37 left in the contest, lightning struck close to Corbett Stadium, forcing a weather delay that began at 4:57 p.m. CT. Finally, after a one-hour and 45-minute break, the match recommenced with UCF holding its 1-0 advantage. Texas again came close to an equalizer with 11:41 left as Kelsey Shimmick s long shot from 35-plus yards out scraped just over the crossbar. With about five minutes left in the match, the Longhorn offense had one more push left. With the ball out on the right wing, Julia Dyche and Julie Arnold each registered shots from 15 yards out that were blocked. The second rebounded out perfectly for UCF to start the game-sealing, scoring counterattack. The Bulls out-shot the Horns by a total and 7-4 in shots on goal, while UT managed an 11-4 corner kick advantage. The extremely physical match was marred by 20 combined fouls, 14 of those on USF, numerous player collisions and three total yellow cards. With Texas owning the majority of the early possession, the Horns registered the match s initial shot during the sixth minute as a pass from the middle to the left wing by senior midfielder Sharis Lachappelle located sophomore forward Jasmine Hart. The Haltom City, Texas, native eluded a defender, via a quick move to her right, and fired a low drive that was corralled on a dive by USF keeper Katarina Elliott. The Longhorns best opportunity of the first half came in the 28th minute as junior forward Kelsey Shimmick made a strong run up the right wing and delivered a great cross to the middle. Freshman forward Olivia Brook came charging into the play near the top of the 18, but got a little too far under her headed effort, popping the ball over the crossbar for a goal kick. The Bulls managed to break the scoreless dead-lock at 31:43 as midfielder Chance scored from about 10 yards out on the left wing. UT junior net minder Abby Smith, who made five saves in the match, had initially charged off her line to defend a shot and went down briefly following a harsh collision with a USF player. With the net mouth virtually unguarded, the ball ricocheted around before winding up at the feet of Chance who finished into the right side of the twine. The physicality was really cranked up in the second half as both teams battled hard for possession. Neither offense managed a serious scoring threat over the first 20 minutes of the second stanza as the defenses consistently cleared away any potential danger. USF had an opportunity off a corner in the 67th minute as Ocean Parr saw the ball fall to her feet about 12 yards out on the right wing. Her drive never troubled Smith, however, as the shot traveled well high of frame. Texas mounted some sustained pressure of its own from the 67th through 70th minutes by earning a pair of corners. Senior defender Brooke Gilbert managed a pair of strong headers, but both shots traveled wide left of frame. With 18:38 remaining in the contest, the Horns were judged to have committed a foul inside the 18. USF forward Demi Stokes stepped to the spot and converted the resulting penalty kick to seal the Bulls 2-0 victory. Myers Stadium. The Longhorns registered more shots on goal (three) than any other team had accomplished against the Bruins during the campaign and equaled the best team shot output thus far with five. UCLA goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland had been required to make just four saves over seven combined matches before UT kept her busy by forcing three stops. UCLA out-shot the Horns by a 21-5 total, but the Burnt Orange & White closed the gap to just 9-4 in favor of the Bruins over the final 45 minutes of play. What turned out to be the only goal of the contest came just 2:52 into the match. UCLA defender Caprice Dydasco made a pass up the left wing to Taylor Smith. The junior forward made a strong run up the left wing and delivered a cross into the middle that landed right at the feet of Bruin standout Sam Mewis. The midfielder didn t waste her chance, burying the ball into the lower left corner from 12 yards out for a 1-0 lead. After surviving the early onslaught, Texas began to settle into the contest. Texas first shot came at 25:55 courtesy of freshman forward Olivia Brook. The Longhorns leading scorer took a pass from the left wing, moved towards the middle and launched a drive from 22 yards out that drifted wide right of the far post. From there the Bruins controlled the remaining action in the opening stanza, out-shooting UT by an 8-0 count over the final 19:05. Texas spent the best part of the first eight minutes of the second stanza in the Bruins end. Arguably the best offensive stretch of the match for Texas came during the 56th and 60th minutes. First, sophomore midfielder Julia Dyche let a shot fly from 28 yards out on the right side that drifted wide left. Junior forward Chantale Campbell followed soon after by launching a drive from near the right end line that forced Rowland s initial save of the contest. Texas best scoring opportunity came at 66:04 as senior defender Whitney Jaynes made a strong run up the left wing. The Plano, Texas, native crossed a ball to the middle where senior midfielder Sharis Lachappelle was waiting. Battling her marker, the San Antonio, Texas, product attempted to volley the pass out of the air from eight yards out, but popped her effort straight up as it landed in the net minder s hands. After UCLA nearly made it 2-0 via a drive off the crossbar during the 73rd minute, UT junior midfielder Lindsey Meyer forced another save by flicking a header on frame off a long free kick by Smith. The Bruins managed a trio of shots down the stretch, forcing a great diving stop by Smith, but could add no more to their lead in settling for the one-goal victory. 14 MATCH 10 TEXAS at Texas State San Marcos, Texas - Sept. 21, 1 2 OT OT2 F TEXAS UCF Goals from sophomore forward Jasmine Hart and senior midfielder Sharis Lachappelle powered Texas (5-3-2) return to the win column as UT defeated Texas State (5-3-1), 2-0. The Longhorns out-shot the Bobcats by a total, while managing an 8-3 advantage on corner kicks. The goals for Hart and Lachappelle were their second and first of the campaign, respectively. Junior goalkeeper Abby Smith equaled a career-high by making eight saves in the contest, equaling her output against Texas Tech back on Oct. 12, Inspired by one of the program s largest crowds in history (1,153), the Bobcats had the best of the early going. The TSU offense owned the majority of the possession over the first four minutes but failed to register a single shot. Texas soon cranked up the offensive pressure, and it wasn t long until the dynamic forward duo of Kelsey Shimmick and Hart did grant the Longhorns the lead. Shimmick made a bombing foray up the left side and crossed to the middle. Hart battled her marker about seven yards out to finish off a side-footed effort that just trickled across the line at 13:27 to grant Texas a 1-0 lead. Texas had another great chance in the 39th minute as substitute Katie Gernsbacher fought a defender up the right wing before crossing a ball into the 18. Her pass ended up right at the feet of freshman forward Olivia Brook, but the Houston, Texas, native s shot from about 10 yards out in the middle traveled right at keeper Caitlynn Rinehart for a save. Corner kicks have been the lifeblood of the Longhorn offense in, and at 60:11, one paid dividends. Chantale Campbell took the kick from the right corner, and her cross located Lachappelle. The senior midfielder headed home from 12 yards out to grant Texas a 2-0 lead. Over the next few minutes, UT nearly added to their lead but were twice denied by the woodwork. Hart fired a shot from the left wing at 60:46 that rattled off the crossbar and Shimmick followed soon after at 63:41 with a drive from the right side that hit the underside of the bar, bounced straight down near the line and was cleared. With 17:30 left, Texas State s Chandler Cooney registered back-to-back shots to force one Smith save. No long after that incident, Smith fumbled a cross briefly and was forced to race out to mark Maddie Nichols, who had taken possession, stepfor-step. With the goal effectively uncovered at 81:30, Nichols lobbed a shot that was cleared off the line via header by junior midfielder Lindsey Meyer. From there Texas worked hard to run out the clock, securing the squad s fifth victory of the campaign via the 2-0 win over the Bobcats. MATCH 11 #6 Texas Tech at TEXAS Austin, Texas - Sept. 26, 1 2 OT OT2 F #6 Texas Tech TEXAS A golden goal seven minutes into the first overtime, from the prolific foot of freshman forward Olivia Brook, proved the difference at Mike A. Myers Stadium as Texas (6-3-2) handed No. 6 Texas Tech (9-1-0) its first loss of the season, 1-0 (OT). The win marked the first for the Longhorns over a top-10 team since recording a 1-0 triumph over No. 10 BYU back on Sept. 20, The sixth-ranked Red Raiders were also the highest-rated opponent UT soccer has defeated since the Burnt Orange & White knocked off No. 5 Oklahoma State on Oct. 24, 2010, 1-0. For Brook the goal marked her team-leading sixth score of the campaign, while sophomore forward Jasmine Hart was credited with her squad-best fifth assist and sophomore defender Isabelle Kerr earned her initial helper of the year. Approaching the seventh minute, the midfield became a battlefield as both teams turned up the physical play. Off a UT corner, Texas senior defender Brooke Gilbert found herself in front of the keeper and blasted a point blank header that Lauren Watson, TTU s netminder, was barely able to send away from goal. Texas Tech s forward Janine Beckie, who fired a match-high 10 total shots, swiftly found some space to register consecutive dangerous shots from the right side. She ripped the ball twice, the first time wide and the second time straight to Smith as the Plano, Texas, native was able to control the shot. The Red Raiders best opportunity of the half came at 17:21 in the form of a solid through ball aimed for Beckie. The forward out ran two Texas defenders to position herself one-on-one against Smith at the left post, but Texas netminder made a miraculous deflection to clear the ball away. In her first career start, Texas forward Morgan Murphy almost broke the scoreless deadlock at 18:38 as her drive from the right side of the 18 had to be tipped over the crossbar by a leaping Watson. In the 62th minute, Hart almost took Watson by surprise between the pipes by launching a dangerous shot from the left side of the field across the goal mouth that forced an equally impressive two-hand diving save. While both teams had chances down the stretch in regulation, neither squad managed a single shot on goal over the last 20:58 as overtime would prove necessary. When the first period of overtime began, Texas displayed the strong effort that has characterized the team throughout the year. It was finally at 97:00 when the effort finally paid dividends on the scoreboard. After Smith passed the ball upfield to Kerr, the defender located Hart in some space. The Haltom City, Texas, product chested the ball down and fed Brook out on the right wing. After one quick dribble, Brook launched a shot that nestled into the upper left corner of the twine to set off Longhorn jubilation. MATCH 12 #17 West Virginia at TEXAS Austin, Texas - Sept. 28, 1 2 OT OT2 F #17 West Virginia TEXAS Goals from West Virginia s Kelsie Maloney and Ashley Lawrence proved the difference as the 17th-ranked Mountaineers (8-2-2, Big 12) defeated Texas (6-4-2-, Big 12), 2-0. WVU out-shot the Longhorns by a total for the match and led in corner kicks, 7-4. UT managed a 10-7 advantage in total shots and a 7-3 disparity in shots on frame, however, over the second 45 minutes of play. As soon as the ball started rolling, West Virginia displayed confidence on the pitch by getting off to a fast start and not letting Texas settle into the game. Over the first 5:52 of the match, the Mountaineers managed three shots, two of which were saved by Abby Smith, and a pair of corner kicks. After 20 minutes of play and a nice Longhorn defensive effort, Texas began finding rhythm and creating lanes to serve the ball up field. During the 26th minute, senior Cierra Grubbs gave the team an offensive spark, showing great footwork and elusiveness to shake off two defenders and set up a corner kick. Off the feed into the middle, the ball bounced out to Whitney Jaynes, and she fired a left-footed shot that traveled wide right. With the Mountaineers pushing strongly over the last minutes of the half, they were able to drive the middle of the field and feed a ball to Maloney on the right side. She created a little separation and ripped a shot that looked as if it would travel right into the waiting arms of Smith in net. The shot took a small deflection off a Texas defender, however, and that proved just enough to push the ball past UT s goalkeeper at 42:27 for a 1-0 lead. The Longhorns opened of the second half looking revitalized and focused on making a comeback. UT got off to a great start just 1:26 into the new stanza as sophomore midfielder Julia Dyche fired a blast from long distance that barely sailed left of the post. In the 60th minute freshman forward Olivia Brook made a solid run up the left side. Her feed to Jaynes allowed the senior defender the chance to fire on net, but again WVU s Hannah Steadman made the save for the Mountaineers. The WVU advantage doubled at 61:15 as a pass to the middle of the 18 located the feet of Lawrence. She turned and dribbled quickly to her right before firing back into the left side of the netting to make it 2-0. Texas refused to go down without a fight as Grubbs forced a save at 61:31. Texas junior forward Chantale Campbell nearly tucked a ball in at the left post at 66:29, but a Mountaineer player dove to register a team save and had a teammate promptly clear the ball away. Down the stretch, shots from Brook (69:38), Isabelle Kerr (76:04) and Campbell (83:12) all traveled on frame, but again found the waiting arms of Steadman as West Virginia completed its two-goal victory. 15 MATCH 13 TEXAS at Iowa State Ames, Iowa - Oct. 3, 1 2 OT OT2 F TEXAS Iowa State With a match-time temperature of 45 degrees, occasional wind gusts topping 30 mph and wind chills hovering in the low 30 s at the Cyclone Sports Complex, Texas fought past both the elements and Iowa State in securing an important Big 12 Conference victory, 1-0. The Longhorns out-shot Iowa State by a 24-6 total, including a commanding 13-2 over the second 45 minutes of action, and 8-3 on shots on goal. Texas, which entered the match ranked second in NCAA Division I in earning corner kicks, managed a 13-1 advantage over ISU in the category. The winning goal was scored at 69:06 by Texas junior midfielder Lindsey Meyer, her second goal of the campaign, off assists from senior defender Brooke Gilbert and junior forward Chantale Campbell. UT just missed a glorious chance during the 16th minute as Sharis Lachappelle made a quick run up the left wing and crossed to the far post. Olivia Brook was making a run up the middle, and while unmarked, came up about a foot short of reaching the pass and having a point-blank opportunity to score the match s first goal. The ball eventually rolled out over the right sideline for a throw-in. Iowa State missed a golden opportunity of its own in the 25th minute as a pass ended up at the feet of Hayley Womack in the middle of the 18. In some space 14 yards out, her right-footed shot cut too far to the right and past the post for a harmless goal kick. Another dangerous sequence saw Texas get close to breaking in front in the 54th minute as junior forward Kelsey Shimmick dribbled to her left, inside of a defender on the right side, and launched a right-footed shot on frame. The windaltered drive was blocked, ricocheting out in the middle of the six-yard box. A Cyclone defender attempted to clear the ball over the top of goal, but her clearance attempt struck hard off the crossbar, bouncing back into play. UT couldn t manage a follow-up shot, however, as Iowa State finally managed to move the ball up-field out of danger. The breakthrough finally came at 69:06 as Texas started the decisive play by earning one of its trademark corners. Campbell delivered a perfect ball from the right corner to the far post where Gilbert headed the ball back across the face. The ball briefly connected with Meyer s leg, diverting the sphere into the twine for a 1-0 lead. One nervy moment remained for the Horns in the 87th minute as Iowa State earned its only corner kick of the match. Womack served the ball in from the left corner to the near post, but a Cyclone header into the middle was quickly cleared away by Texas to seal the 1-0 victory. MATCH 14 #11 Kansas at TEXAS Austin, Texas - Oct. 10, 1 2 OT OT2 F #11 Kansas TEXAS A 63rd-minute strike from Kansas forward Ashley Williams proved the difference as the No. 11 Jayhawks (14-1-0, Big 12) remained unbeaten in Big 12 Conference action with a 1-0 victory over Texas (7-5-2, Big 12). The Longhorns out-shot the Jayhawks by a total and 7-4 in shots on goal, while also managing a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. Junior goalkeeper Abby Smith registered three saves for UT, while senior midfielder Sharis Lachappelle led the squad with five total shots, two on frame. The feeling out process began immediately from the opening kick as both teams spent the better part of the opening five minutes battling for possession in the midfield. The Jayhawks best opportunity of the opening 45 minutes came during the 20th-minute. Off a corner, the ball dropped perfectly for Jamie Fletcher right out in front of the goal. Her header was solid, but traveled right into the waiting arms of Smith for a save. The Burnt Orange & White had a golden chance of their own in the 36th-minute, as Kaitlyn Stroud made a mistake on a goal kick, sending the ball directly to Chantale Campbell s feet about 38 yards out in the middle of the pitch. The Texas forward appeared a bit surprised and tried to react promptly, but immediate pressure from a Kansas defender made her rush a shot that ventured wide of net. Texas best opportunity of the first half came off of a long free kick taken from deep on the right wing. Julia Dyche lofted a ball into the middle of the 18 that was punched out by Stroud. After bouncing around among several players, it finally found its way to Longhorn freshman Morgan Murphy. The Plano, Texas, native hit the ball in stride, forcing the Jayhawk keeper to leap high to make a save. Kansas came extremely close to breaking the scoreless dead-lock at 58:16 as a pass by Liana Salazar from the right wing to the left post found Williams, but her sliding effort with her left foot drifted just wide of the post. Just 4:33 later, the Longhorns weren t as fortunate as Salazar again found Williams, this time just outside the right top of the box. Williams was in some space, turned and decisively struck the ball into the upper left corner to put the Jayhawks on top 1-0. Searching for an equalizer, the Longhorns began upping their offensive pressure. Back-to-back shots by Cierra Grubbs and Dyche in the 73rdminute were blocked, and senior defender Whitney Jaynes came close at 82:46 as her lengthy effort from well out on the left wing traveled just high of the right corner. With time running short, Texas junior midfielder Lindsey Meyer had one final chance to draw her team even, but her shot from outside the top of the 18 ventured right to Stroud as Kansas wrapped up the one-goal victory. MATCH 15 TEXAS at TCU Fort Worth, Texas - Oct. 17, 1 2 OT OT2 F TEXAS TCU Despite out-shooting the hosts by a commanding total and getting a second half goal from junior forward Chantale Campbell, Texas (7-6-2, Big 12 Conference) suffered a 3-1 defeat to TCU (8-5-3, Big 12). For Campbell the score was her third of the campaign, while junior forward Kelsey Shimmick was credited with her second assist of the year. With UT having the run of play over the first 25-plus minutes, it proved to be a set piece that finally broke the dead-lock. On TCU s first corner of the match, forward Emma Heckendorn delivered a ball from the right corner into the middle. Midfielder Makenzie Koch leapt above the crowd and headed a threatening shot towards the lower left corner. Junior netminder Abby Smith dove quickly and got a touch, but the ball eluded her grasp, trickling just over the line at 28:19 for a 1-0 Horned Frog advantage. Texas nearly had an equalizer at 38:09 as freshman forward Olivia Brook made a decisive move from the right wing into the middle and launched an ambitious shot from 27 yards. The drive looked as if it might have snuck under the crossbar had Arnold not managed to tip the ball over at the last second. Straight out of the locker room break, TCU needed just 14 seconds to double its advantage. Off the second half kick-off, midfielder Michelle Prokof made a run up the middle and delivered a through ball into the 18 that found forward Emma Heckendorn racing in from the left side. She took one dribble and beat Smith to grant the Frogs a two-goal lead. The advantage expanded to 3-0 at 53:18 as a feed from the left wing by midfielder Jill Finnerty was finished off via a header from TCU midfielder Eryn Spencer. The Longhorn offense managed to pull one back at 57:29 as Kelsey Shimmick started the play by launching a shot from the left side. The drive took a deflection and appeared headed right towards a waiting Arnold in net. Campbell came racing out of nowhere right through the middle with inside position on her marker and finished off her third goal of the season with a right-footed chip from eight yards out. The Texas offense continued to fight in the 63rd-minute as Shimmick again forced a save on a 22-yard shot from the left wing. Off a follow-up corner from the right side, UT senior defender Brooke Gilbert s header near the left post drifted just wide for a goal kick. Sharis Lachappelle and junior midfielder Lindsey Meyer each had a long shot travel high of frame at 66:20 and 67:20, respectively. Morgan Murphy blasted a shot from the left wing that was blocked out in front during the 82nd-minute, while Brook had a great chance from the middle of the 18 go awry at 82:40 as her left-footed try was mis-hit and rolled wide of the right post. 16 MATCH 16 UALR at TEXAS Austin, Texas - Oct. 20, 1 2 OT OT2 F UALR TEXAS Behind a season-high 29-shot effort and goals from seniors Sharis Lachappelle and Julie Arnold, Texas (8-6-2) moved back into the win column with a dominant, 2-0 victory over Arkansas-Little Rock in a rare Monday night non-conference match-up at Mike A. Myers Stadium. For Lachappelle a successful penalty kick just 4:43 into the contest marked her second goal of the campaign, while for Arnold, her score at the 70:49 mark was the first of the defender s career in the Burnt Orange & White. UT out-shot the Trojans by a commanding 29-3 total and 11-1 in shots on goal while totaling a 12-0 advantage on corner kicks. Texas senior goalkeeper Ava Vogel got the start in net in relief of Abby Smith, earning her second career shutout while forced to make just one stop. Just three minutes in, a Texas cross from the right wing towards the right post was finished in a crowd of players via a running chip. Unfortunately for UT, the referee on the far side had his flag raised skyward signaling offsides. It would be just 1:39 later that the Longhorns broke in front on the scoreboard, and virtually all courtesy of Lachappelle. The midfielder worked her way inside the 18, made a quick move to her left past a UALR defender and was tackled, giving the head official no choice but to point to the spot. The San Antonio, Texas, product calmly finished what she started, firing the spot kick into the right side netting past diving Trojan netminder Bre Ilkuf to make it 1-0. UALR managed its first shot of the contest from just inside the box at 5:41 as midfielder Ariel Galletti popped a side-footed shot up in the air towards frame that ended up dropping harmlessly in Vogel s waiting hands. The Texas shooting gallery would continue virtually unabated throughout the remainder of the opening 45 minutes. Lachappelle was making a particular pest of herself, firing wide right at 6:28 and heading wide at 21:37. Granted some space on the right side of the box in the 23rd-minute, she blasted a quick shot on frame that was just stopped near the right post. It was more of the same in the second 45 minutes for the Horns as UT controlled possession through the half. Lachappelle again troubled the Trojan netminder with both a shot on frame at 51:16 and a drive that ricocheted off the left post at 61:04. With a second goal seemingly inevitable for Texas, it finally came at the 70:49 mark. With space through the middle of the pitch, Arnold started a long run from out of the back. Just outside the 18, the Round Rock, Texas, native unleashed a low shot that beat the keeper inside the right post allowing the Horns to nab a 2-0 advantage. The Longhorns out-shot the hosts by a 10-6 total and managed a 3-2 advantage on corner kicks. Senior defender Whitney Jaynes was credited with her second assist of the season on Murphy s score, while junior goalkeeper Abby Smith made two saves in earning her 22nd career shutout and Texas eighth blanking of the season. Texas stunned the Crimson-clad crowd by needing just 45 seconds to register the match s first goal. From out on the left wing, Jaynes delivered a perfect cross towards the top of the sixyard box. Marked closely in front of the left post, Murphy out-jumped the crowd to head home her first career goal from approximately seven yards out to grant the Longhorns a 1-0 lead. Following an extended battle in the midfield, OU managed a shot from the top of the box off the foot of midfielder Rasha Roberts that traveled wide left at 24:57. Texas raced right back down the pitch and posted a quality scoring chance of its own at 26:35. Senior midfielder Sharis Lachappelle made a great move to elude a pair of defenders on the left wing and crossed a perfect ball to the far post where a tightly-marked Chantale Campbell sent a header just high of frame. Oklahoma forced the match s first save for either team at 52:38 as midfielder Shiloh Price found some space on the left side and unleashed a drive from 22 yards that traveled right into the waiting arms of Smith in goal. Texas nearly doubled its advantage at 68:32 as junior forward Kelsey Shimmick made a quick move around a defender to locate some space and found herself in a desperate one-on-one race with OU s keeper for the ball nearing the top right corner of the box. The pair arrived at virtually the same time, with Shimmick trying to chip the ball over the sliding Kassidie Stade. The Sooner net minder touched the ball well outside the 18-yard box, and after Shimmick s try at the open net traveled just inches wide right of frame, the head referee showed the keeper a red card forcing the Sooners to play the rest of the match down a player. Despite playing at a disadvantage, Oklahoma had another solid scoring chance in the 79thminute as midfielder Abby Hodgen broke into some space near the top of the box and unleashed a shot that traveled wide left. After another Murphy headed try missed the net for Texas at 86:09, the Sooners had one last chance at an equalizer in the final minute. A ball found its way to Luallin in the middle of the 18 with under a minute left, but she couldn t get off a shot as a defensive clearance ricocheted back into the arms of Smith to seal the hard-fought triumph. Senior defender Brooke Gilbert and junior forward Chantale Campbell were credited with their second and third assists of the season, respectively. After battling throughout the midfield over the opening five minutes, it was Baylor that recorded the match s first truly dangerous scoring opportunity. Following a foul against the Horns committed about 40 yards out in the middle of the pitch, a subsequent feed was delivered into a crowd stationed just outside the six-yard box. Smith leapt in an attempt to punch the ball and could manage only light contact. With the ball ricocheting around among the players in front, Bri Campos somehow managed to get a shot through the congestion, granting Baylor a 1-0 lead just 5:41 into the match. In the 23rd-minute, Texas came exceptionally close to an equalizer as Dyche s ambitious effort from about 30 yards out in the middle rattled off the crossbar and ventured over the left end line for a goal kick. Baylor nearly doubled its advantage just 1:49 into the second stanza as a shot from the top of the 18 just missed finding the upper right corner of the twine. Just 1:19 later, a shot from the left wing by midfielder Justine Hovden skimmed past the right post and went out of play for a goal kick. Texas continued to press hard for an equalizer, earning its fourth corner kick of the contest at 58:21. When the ball was delivered into the crowd out front by Sharis Lachappelle, Gilbert conducted her own individual assault on the BU goal from the middle of the 18, eventually directing a pair of solid headers towards net that were blocked out front. With set pieces proving dangerous for both teams, it proved to be a Baylor foul that helped lead to Texas equalizer at 74:27. Gilbert took a free kick from 40 yards out and delivered a great ball towards the left post. Meyer again leapt above the crowd, heading home a shot from 10 yards out to dead-lock the match at 1-1. Closing in on what seemed to be an inevitable overtime session, the end came suddenly with just 30 seconds remaining on the clock. Cierra Grubbs worked hard to earn a foul and free kick near the right end line. When the ball was delivered into the box, it pin-balled around among several players before bouncing straight out to Dyche. She stepped into the shot, blasting the match-winner home at 89:30 to finish off the stunning Texas victory. Texas Baylor Shots SOG 4 5 Saves 4 2 Corners Fouls Texas Soccer Match Notes 15

MATCH 19 Oklahoma State at TEXAS Austin, Texas - Oct. 31, 1 2 OT OT2 F Oklahoma St TEXAS With overtime looming on Halloween night at Mike A. Myers Stadium and the woodwork twice unkind to the home team via UT shots ringing off both the post and crossbar, Oklahoma State (10-8-1, Big 12) forward Courtney Dike registered the match-winning goal at 88:27 as the Cowgirls defeated Texas (10-7-2, Big 12), 2-1. UT junior goalkeeper Abby Smith established a new single-match career-high with 10 saves against the Cowgirls, while junior midfielder Lindsey Meyer led the Longhorns offense with six shots, two on frame. Friday s match was wide-open from the very start with Texas having the best of the early going. Sophomore midfielder Julia Dyche blasted a shot off the left post just 2:11 into the contest. It appeared that Texas had taken the lead during the sixth minute as a great combination play from Dyche to junior forward Kelsey Shimmick was headed into the twine from 10 yards out by senior midfielder Sharis Lachappelle. Unfortunately for the Burnt Orange & White, the linesman s flag was up signaling offsides to nullify the goal. With the Cowgirl offense ratcheting up the pressure in the offensive third, it was Texas that gifted OSU its first score of the contest. On a cross in from the left wing, an attempted clearance via header near the left post was accidentally directed into the Horns own net for a 1-0 Oklahoma State advantage at 12:41. It was Shimmick that helped turn the tide for the Longhorns, firing a shot that was blocked in the 37th-minute before successfully drawing a foul inside the box at 38:34 to force the referee to point to the spot. Meyer stepped up and buried the penalty kick into the left side of the twine past the diving keeper, tying the count at 1-1. Texas nearly grabbed the lead with 4:55 left in the opening half as a shot from a tough angle on the right wing by sophomore forward Jasmine Hart just skimmed by the left post. UT had the best chance over the initial 16 minutes of the second half, however, as a pass by Hart from the right end line found junior forward Chantale Campbell making a late run to the top of the 18. The London, Ontario, Canada, native teed up a shot but got just underneath the ball to send a great look over the bar. It would be the last few minutes of regulation, however, that proved perhaps the most enthralling of the entire match. The fun started at 86:26 as a Texas cross into the middle was headed off the crossbar by Meyer before being cleared away by OSU. Back on the other end, failing to clear its lines came back to haunt the Longhorns defense as a ball ricocheting around among players out in front dropped to the feet of Dike just outside the six-yard box. She managed to unleash a shot that beat Smith at 88:27. Texas forced one final corner kick in the last 10 seconds, but was unable to get off a shot at goal as the clock ticked away to a 2-1 Cowgirl victory. Down 1-0 immediately in the PK shootout as UT missed its opening spot kick, Texas got successful penalties from senior defender Brooke Gilbert, junior forward Chantale Campbell, freshman forward Morgan Murphy, junior midfielder Lindsey Meyer, senior defender Whitney Jaynes and senior midfielder Sharis Lachappelle, as well as decisive misses from Red Raiders Alli Murphy and Hannah Devine to set off Burnt Orange & White jubilation. Campbell managed her fourth goal of the season by scoring at the 34:48 mark off the second assist of the campaign from sophomore midfielder Julia Dyche. Junior goalkeeper Abby Smith made three saves in the contest while playing the entire 110 minutes between the pipes. Texas out-shot Texas Tech by a commanding total, including 9-1 in the opening half and by a combined 8-1 over the two overtime periods. Having come so close to breaking in front over the previous few minutes, Texas finally nabbed the match s first goal with the assistance of a TTU foul. Dyche took the earned free kick from about 25 yards out, firing a low line drive that ricocheted off a Red Raider player. The carom took a fortunate bounce for UT, traveling right to the feet of Campbell waiting inside the 18. The London, Ontario, Canada, native finished into the left side of the twine for a 1-0 lead at 34:48. The Texas advantage lasted until the 52:11 mark as Red Raider defender Meagan Mc- Cullough unleashed a blast from 30 yards out that eluded a diving Smith to tie the count at 1-1. In overtime, the Horns had a great chance of their own off a corner in the 94th minute. Dyche fed the ball towards the back post where Meyer s headed try was blocked. The ball bounced outside the 18 to Jaynes, and she launched a leftfooted, follow-up attempt over the bar. UT outshot the Red Raiders in the first extra period, 4-1. With six minutes remaining in the second overtime, Campbell delivered a corner kick into the middle of the 18. Meyer managed a header towards goal that was blocked. With the ball ricocheting around near the right post and Kelsey Shimmick dangerously lurking, a UT foul ended the threat. Just seconds later, a Brook header off a corner was just held out of net by the extended arms of TTU net minder Watson as the teams were forced to the penalty-kick shootout to settle things. Texas TTU Shots SOG 5 4 Saves 3 4 Corners Fouls MATCH 21 - Big 12 Semifinal TEXAS vs. #9 West Virginia Kansas City, Mo. - Nov. 7, 1 2 OT OT2 F P TEXAS #9 West Virginia On a chilly and blustery evening in Big 12 Championship semifinal action at the Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City, Mo., Texas ( ) battled valiantly over 110 minutes to secure a 0-0 (2OT) tie against top-seeded and No. 9 West Virginia (15-2-3) before ultimately falling in a decisive penalty kick shootout, 6-5. The Longhorns came extremely close to scoring in regulation but were twice victimized by the woodwork on crossbar strikes from junior forward Kelsey Shimmick (9:11) and junior midfielder Lindsey Meyer (77:28). During the shootout round, each team was perfect through its opening three rounds of PK s before both UT junior goalkeeper Abby Smith and substitute WVU net minder Michelle Newhouse stopped the fourth attempts they faced. Neither team would miss again until Texas seventh try was saved. The Mountaineers soon followed with a successful PK to survive and advance. West Virginia out-shot Texas by a count during the match, while junior goalkeeper Abby Smith registered eight saves in posting her eighth solo shutout of the campaign and the 23rd of her illustrious career. Texas came within inches of taking the lead in the 10th minute after a WVU turnover in the midfield was corralled by Sharis Lachappelle. She played a through ball up the left wing to Shimmick, who was locked in a foot race against her marker. The UT forward arrived to the ball first and drilled a shot from a tough angle that had beaten Mountaineer keeper Hannah Steadman but rattled off the crossbar. Smith made perhaps the save of the match at the 60:00 mark, saving the Longhorns as a cross from the left end line into the middle fell to West Virginia s Kate Schwindel inside the six. The WVU forward fired a quick shot from point-blank range that UT s keeper somehow managed to tip straight up and over the crossbar. With WVU s offense buzzing from the 71st to the 74th minute, earning a pair of corners and sending three shots wide of frame, it was the woodwork that was again unkind to the Longhorns in the 78th-minute. Off a Chantale Campbell free kick from deep in the left corner, Meyer s subsequent header from inside the 18 rattled off the crossbar and out of play. Perhaps the best chance for the Horns in the overtime periods came from sophomore defender Isabelle Kerr. She turned quickly about 28 yards out on the right wing and launched a shot at 96:56 that just skimmed over the crossbar. Both teams had final shots go awry of goal over the last five minutes, sending the 0-0 contest to the decisive shootout. Texas WVU Shots SOG 2 8 Saves 8 2 Corners Fouls Texas Soccer Match Notes 16

Texas Chantale Campbell is Making the Most of Her Postseason Opportunities Junior Forward Seems to Raise Her Level Even Higher During the Big 12 Championship By Brian Davis, Texas Media Relations Some athletes just seem to be able to lift their game a level when it matters the most. For Texas soccer, in its recent visits to the annual Big 12 Championship, a case could be made that junior forward Chantale Campbell has been exactly that type of player. As one of the team s scoring leaders in (second on the team with four goals and three assists for 11 points), the London, Ontario, Canada, native has proven to be a solid offensive contributor during her stay on the Forty Acres, totaling 25 career points on eight goals and nine assists over 58 total matches. Something a little extra seems to manifest itself, however, once she gets an opportunity in the postseason. In just four career matches at the league s annual showcase event, Campbell has scored two goals and dished an assist for five points, good enough to tie for fourth all time in total points by any Longhorns player in Big 12 Championship history. For Campbell, the reasoning behind her Big 12 Championship success is pretty simple. It has a lot to do with a strong desire to win and the efforts of her teammates. I think I ve had some success just because I know we have to win these games and need goals in order to do that, Campbell said. I come out a little hungrier. I have a little more of an edge attacking wise, but also my teammates do a great job of setting me up. I see my role as more of a playmaker, trying to get players in, settle down the play and control things from that standpoint. If an opportunity presents itself, I just take it and run with it. During Texas quarterfinal match up against No. 16 Texas Tech on Nov. 5, she certainly took advantage of her opportunities, scoring the match s first goal at the 34:48 mark and later slotting home a penaltykick during UT s decisive, 6 5 shootout victory. I was just waiting at the top of the box to see if the ball was going to pop out at any point, Campbell said. Normally on free kicks, the keeper usually punches it or it just pops out in some way. Julia (Dyche) took the kick for us, and the ball deflected perfectly off a Texas Tech player right back to me. I just finished it, one time in the bottom left corner. I think scoring the first goal on Wednesday just gave us more confidence. We knew we had to win the match to continue our run in the Big 12 Championship, and anytime you re up a goal, you have more momentum. You just feel better and more confident as a team. Confidence is always a huge factor in a team s success, and Campbell playing well is important for the Texas soccer team because she serves as a vital connection between the players stretching from the defensive backline into the attacking third.

Chantale is a sophisticated spark for our team, Texas head coach Angela Kelly said. She sits in the pocket like a consummate number 10, and kind of floats around in space, finding ways to give us some connectivity between our lines. She can strike a ball as well. She s dynamic going into the attacking box. She s scored from 35 yards out on a half turn, she s scored in a seam, she s scored off a header and she s scored by adjusting her run at the back post. She just has an instinct to put the ball in the back of the net. That s the type of player that a team needs, especially in tournament time. For her teammates, it s no surprise that Campbell seems to add a level to her already solid contributions once the squad enters the postseason as she is always looking to improve. I think Chantale s a very consistent player, junior midfielder Lindsey Meyer said. We rely on her every match to keep the ball, to settle the ball and play the ball through to the other forwards. Whenever we need the possession back, she s the one who handles doing that pretty consistently. She always carries that effort through to the Big 12 Championship, and that s a great boost for our team. With Chantale nothing she does is ever good enough for her, senior midfielder Sharis Lachappelle said. She is always wanting to get better, and is her own biggest critic. She brings the mentality of not settling for just ok or just good but in trying to improve every day, because she s always so hard on herself during training and games. I think she just brings a raised awareness to all of us that we can be better than what we are. With a huge opportunity looming on Friday in the Big 12 Championship semifinals against No. 9 West Virginia to make not just a league statement, but a national one as well, Campbell knows believing a win can be accomplished is key. I think we need to come out hungry and put a lot of pressure on their defense, Campbell said. We need to be able to take care of the pressure they put on us and take care of our defensive responsibilities as a group. We need to possess the ball very well, because if we don t have it, we obviously can t run our offense. We need to do a good job of finishing the opportunities we get. We just have to come into the match believing we can win, and we should do well. And if Texas run in the Big 12 Championship happens to continue, for Campbell it could end in sort of a dream come true scenario. (Winning a Big 12 title) would be huge. I would love that. That s definitely been one of my goals at Texas, to win a Big 12 Championship before I leave. Hopefully we can make that happen this year. If her personal history in the event is any guide, it s likely that before it s all over, Campbell will have a little more to say about bringing that goal to fruition.

Freshman Olivia Brook Making Her Impression Felt on Texas Soccer By Jesus Salazar, Texas Media Relations After 97 minutes of play on a recent Friday night at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas, the stage was set for heroics. Texas Soccer was locked in an overtime battle against in state rival and sixth ranked Texas Tech. The atmosphere was charged and both teams were desperately searching for a spark, someone to make a big play to nab a huge Big 12 Conference victory. When the spark finally came, it likely didn t surprise loyal followers of Texas Soccer that the spark came from freshman forward Olivia Brook. After receiving a beautiful feed from teammate Jasmine Hart, Brook calmly played the ball to her left side and unleashed a left footed shot from outside the box on the right wing. The perfectly placed drive left TTU s keeper with no chance at a save, nestling into the top left corner of the twine to complete the upset and set off Burnt Orange jubilation. In witnessing the moment in person or on the Longhorn Network broadcast, many devoted UT soccer fans likely had the same thought run through their minds: it had to be her. The fact is, the 19 year old forward is getting UT fans used to seeing these types of performances. The game winning goal marked Brook s team leading sixth tally of the season and kept her ranked among the top five overall scoring leaders in the Big 12 Conference. That talent didn t just appear overnight. It took years of preparation and commitment, hard work and resiliency. Those are qualities that Brook likely learned from example, growing up with a father who played college football and a mother who spent time as a professional dancer. Her parents were a major factor in helping forge the character that drives her every day both on the soccer field and in the classroom, where she is studying advertising. They always had a strong drive in everything they did, and I guess that rubbed off on me, Brook said. They were such hard workers, so into sports and athletics and so focused on achieving their goals. That influence helped forge quite an athletic resume, as Brook tried almost every sport available o her before committing her standout efforts to soccer and track and field. She excelled in both disciplines, eventually winning numerous awards and accolades for Memorial High School in her hometown of Houston, Texas. Brook soon came to a crossroads, however, and felt forced to make a choice between putting her focus into one sport over another. According to her, the choice was an easy one. I ve always loved soccer, Brook said. I ve always played soccer. I started running track to get better at soccer, to get faster. I did long jump, high jump and triple jump. Those helped me with coordination and speed. I enjoyed it too, but it was always soccer for me. It s not every day that you meet an athlete with the determination of becoming so good at what she does, that she is willing to commit to a sport as demanding as track and field with the sole purpose of using it as a platform to elevate her game of soccer to the next level. A true Longhorn indeed.

For Brook, being a part of the Longhorn program and wearing the Burnt Orange are privileges she plans to take full advantage of over her four years. When the time came to make a decision on where to play collegiately, the Texas coaching staff, led by head coach Angela Kelly, made quite an impression and played a huge role in her decision to come to the Forty Acres. When I came and took my first unofficial visit, the coaching staff was awesome, Brook said. You can t pass on an opportunity to work with people with such experience that can help you so much. Texas gives you all the tools. It has the facilities and everything that can help me be the best player that I can be. It was just right for me. It also doesn t hurt that she now has the opportunity to be mentored by one of her lifelong soccer heroes, lauded United States Women s National Team star and new Texas volunteer coach Kristine Lilly. The situation has truly evolved into a perfect fit. Olivia is the type of individual that embraces competition and shies away from no one, Texas head coach Angela Kelly said. She has been gifted with athleticism and is a NATURAL goal scorer. Her instincts around the goal are incredible and can not be taught. In order to have success over a long period of time you must be humble, you must be coachable and you must be willing to put your neck on the line. Olivia will continue to find success in our culture because she embodies this mentality. Off the field, being a Texas athlete carries a special weight, a unique responsibility of turning into an agent of change for society and to hold utmost respect for the University s values. In other words, an athlete is expected to give back to the community. For Brook, playing for Texas and starting her career so well has put her in an unusual position, one that she s still getting used to: being a role model for kids aspiring to be just like her. I haven t really thought about me being a role model for the other kids, Brook said. I m young so I guess I don t really see myself as being viewed that way, but it s a great thing. I think it s really cool seeing all the little girls out there that could possibly come play here. I hope they do, and I ll always encourage them to do their best. Because of her status, she s been asked to do things that regular 19 year olds likely wouldn t be asked to do, for instance, doing on camera interviews for media entities. Nonetheless, she s assumed her role in stride, showing her maturity level is beyond her young age. Another great example of the person that Brook is, if you ask the scoring leader of any soccer team what their best all time memory on the field is, one might expect an answer along the lines of a championshipwinning goal or a match where she may have broken a personal scoring record. For Brook, the answer was a little different and came with a huge smile in tow: an assist. When I was in high school, we made it to the third round of playoffs every year, Brook said. We had one game that we had to win to move on to the next stage, I think I assisted the goal. I love scoring, but it was just the feeling of my helping to make that happen for someone else. That was awesome, we moved on and we had an incredible season. Selflessness at its best. That kind of attitude is exactly why her coaches and teammates have embraced her so easily, wanting to help her any way possible in becoming not only a better player, but an even better person.

And what are her biggest motivations to get better on the field and in life? God, my family and the people around me, Brook said without hesitation. Also the fact that I m in a team sport. You have to want to win for your team, otherwise, why are you in a team sport? Olivia has been a great addition to our team, Texas senior midfielder Sharis Lachappelle said. She s a super sweet person who s respectful of everyone and loves soaking up knowledge from the upperclassmen, not just on but off the field as well. She s the player who s going to work tremendously hard for the team in everything she does. We know that she s going to come into a match and provide a spark of energy, and that s great for us. This rising soccer star, in the end, is just a young woman trying to succeed at The University of Texas. Someone that loves to draw and create artwork. Someone that loves Texas barbeque and all the types of food that Austin has to offer. Someone with a sense of humor that sometimes includes jumping around and singing for no reason, spreading joy to whoever she s with in a given moment. That s Olivia Brook, the epitome of a Longhorn athlete, and Texas is glad she is here to stay.

Freshman Olivia Brook makes her mark early and often for the Longhorns October 9, By Daniel Clay The Daily Texan The Longhorns were lucky to stumble through the first 90 minutes of last month s conference opener against No. 10 Texas Tech without conceding a goal. But Texas was unable to maintain a consistent threat on the Raider net, and Texas Tech sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Watson repelled any serious chances. Neither team had scored when the clock struck 90. Most teams would look to their veteran players to clutch an overtime game against such an important opponent, but not this year s Texas team. Seven minutes into the first sudden death period, freshman forward Olivia Brook charged down the right side, received a pass from sophomore forward Jasmine Hart and floated a beautiful shot into the top-left corner of the net for a game-winning goal and a huge upset win. But Brook s heroics were no fluke. The youngster is leading the team with six goals through 13 games, making her one of the Longhorns keys to success this season. She doesn t even know how great she s been doing for us, senior midfielder Sharis Lachappelle said. She just goes out there and makes unbelievable shots and goals. She brings energy in every single practice. Brook has thrived in the Longhorns possession-based attack, which requires incredible patience; trigger-happy freshmen can often waste shots, which leads to squandered possessions. However, Brook appears immune to that stigma. Twelve of the freshman s 20 shots have landed on goal for a.600 shots on goal average that eclipses the team s.441 number. Brook has been a constant contributor since she stepped onto the field, but the confident freshman expected nothing less from herself in her first year of college soccer. I hold myself to pretty high standards, Brook said. [Being the leading scorer] is a great feeling, but I don t really think about that. It s not about me; it s how we do as a whole.

Most college coaches can only dream of getting the chance to work with a player who can contribute in her first months on a college campus. Kelly, though, has not fallen into the trap of pampering her young phenomenon and, instead, believes athletes of any classification should be treated the same. As soon as you walk on this campus, I say that you re no longer a freshman you re a Texas Longhorn, Kelly said. It s baptism by fire. If you re ready to go, and you re getting the job done, you re on the field. Very few upperclassmen have the talent to upset the elite of college soccer and light up the scoreboard on a regular basis. But Brook has done all of that as a freshman, and, true to her form, the young attacker is still concerned about getting better. I am working on my striking; I m working on my movement, Brook said. I m learning how to get in good positions for my fellow teammates and just working to get in the best spots to score or just all the movements I need to do to get the team to win.

Kristine Lilly brings experience and dedication to Longhorn soccer Published on October 16, By Daniel Clay The Daily Texan The Texas athletic program has seen some great athletes switch to coaching after calling it quits on their playing careers. Football defensive coordinator Vance Bedford, track and field head coach Mario Sategna and assistant baseball coach Tommy Nicholson had solid collegiate careers, but none of them were considered the best in the history of their sport. Volunteer soccer coach Kristine Lilly, though, has a legitimate claim to that title. The former stalwart midfielder notched 352 caps for the US Women s National Team the most in the history of the sport for men or women scored 130 international goals and won two World Cups to match her two Olympic Gold Medals. That s the best player in the world, head coach Angela Kelly said. From [FC Barcelona forward] Messi on down to [Brazilian women s national team star] Marta, there isn t a player on the men s or women s side that wouldn t have the utmost respect for Kristine Lilly, and that s awesome. Lilly s addition to the coaching staff is especially significant for the players who grew up seeing her on television. I feel like everybody watched her, junior goalkeeper Abby Smith said. Its just a great opportunity to have one of the best players to come coach. In 2010, Lilly played her 23rd and final season for the national team and began to think about coaching soon after her retirement. She interviewed for a spot on the Longhorn staff in 2012 but was hesitant to commit to the job so soon after the birth of her second daughter. By August of, though, Lilly and her family were ready to move to Austin so that she could begin her coaching with Kelly, Lilly s collegiate teammate at North Carolina and the godmother of her youngest child.

The transition from pitch to sidelines for the first-year coach has already changed her perspective on the game. It s a lot easier to be a critic when you re watching, Lilly said. When you re in the game, it s not as easy because it s moving so quickly. You have to have the patience and realization to share that with them. She will continue that progression Friday at 7 p.m. when the Longhorns (7-5-2, Big 12) travel to TCU (7-5-3, Big 12). But there s also a balance Lilly has to see. Paid professional athletes can focus all of their attention on getting better, but most collegiate athletes will never make it to the pros and have to balance their academic pursuits with staying fit for elite competition. The dual commitment required to be a student-athlete is not lost on Lilly. Lilly gave birth to her first daughter during her career, then returned to playing and had the monumental task of balancing motherhood with World Cup aspirations. If you want to play soccer, you ve gotta do the other stuff, said Lilly while glancing over her shoulder to watch her two toddlers kick a soccer ball back and forth with Kelly. On the national team now, I think there s two moms. You can do it. The new coach is most concerned with making sure her players enjoy the game that has given her so much. I like to see the response of the players. I like to see them get it, Lilly said. It s been fun for me, and that s what I want them to realize. It can be fun. You can work hard, but it can be fun.

Strong efforts see Texas lose to No. 1 UCLA, defeat Texas State Published on September 22, By Daniel Clay The Daily Texan It s clear from the box score that the women's soccer team lost its third game in a row 1-0 against No. 1 UCLA on Friday. That being said, Texas gave the defending national champion its best challenge of the season thus far, and a 2-0 win on Sunday over Texas State should quell any fears of a stagnant offense. Texas performance against collegiate elite showed this team has the necessary attributes to make a run in the postseason. If that s the number one team in the country, I m really excited about where we are, head coach Angela Kelly said. We re just going to crank up the tempo, crank up the heat and continue to move forward. As soon as the Longhorns kicked off to start the game, UCLA stole the ball away and hoverd dangerously around the Texas goal. The Longhorn defenders sprinted around the field to pressure the Bruins, but less than three minutes into regulation, Bruin senior midfielder Sam Mewis received a line drive cross right in front of the Texas net and tapped it in to take an early lead. The Longhorns tight press defense continued after conceding the goal, but the offense failed to harness Texas energy and hustle. The Longhorns charged forward when they gained possession, but when they rushed the follow-up passes, UCLA defenders positioned themselves to regain possession. We were intercepting passes in the first half, and we weren t having the confidence on the ball to execute a second pass, Kelly said. Now we just have to have composure in the mid to the attacking third with the final pass. The Texas offense settled down in the second half and began stringing together passes for some extended possession. Four of the Longhorns five shots in the game came in the second half, as did all three of their shots on goal.

Three shots on goal may seem like a disappointing total, but that is the highest total that the smothering UCLA defense had allowed on the season since Pepperdine managed two shots on goal. The Longhorns best chance of the night came with 24 minutes remaining, when senior midfielder Sharis Lachapelle slid to meet a cross with only the goalie between her and pay dirt. The shot, however, popped up harmlessly for an easy save by UCLA senior keeper Katelyn Rowland. The Bruins had a flurry of shots to end the game, but a diving save by junior keeper Abby Smith and high pressure from the Texas defenders held the Bruins scoreless for 87 minutes after their initial goal. We kept them in front and besides that one opportunity, I think we did well, Smith said. We created a new standard for ourselves. The Longhorns lived up to that new standard Sunday when they defeated Texas State 2-0. Lachapelle and sophomore forward Jasmine Hart provided the scoring and helped Texas unleash 26 shots, including 11 on goal.

Texas sports notebook: This goalie can score, too Wednesday, Sept. 3, By Ryan Autullo - American-Statesman Staff A scouting report on Texas goalkeeper Abby Smith might read something like this: Athletic. Strong instincts. A threat to score. That last intangible is getting attention and has opponents on high alert preparing for the unbeaten Longhorns. Smith, a junior who collected All-Big 12 honors each of the past two years, will not only stop shots, she ll force opposing goalies to stop hers. Texas goalie Abby Smith has shown the ability to score, too. She had a 45-yard goal in the Longhorns season opener. Not many coaches share this luxury with Texas Angela Kelly. Knowing she can strike it 50 yards (accurately), it doesn t matter how you organize the defense against it, Kelly said. Consider Texas season opener two weeks ago against Arizona State in Honolulu. Sun Devils keeper Chandler Morris had no prayer against the rising 45-foot laser Smith delivered high and to the left for Texas first goal of the year. Kelly called the strike world class. It came almost one year to the day after Smith scored from beyond midfield against South Florida. Every single coach that prepares for us needs to be prepared for the threat of Abby Smith not on goal, but the attacking side, Kelly said. Smith s versatility is a big reason why Texas (2-0-2) has not lost entering this weekend s matches against A&M Corpus-Christi (Friday, on the road) and Montana (Sunday, at home). She stonewalled No. 25 Arkansas last Friday, registering her 16th career shutout with seven saves in a scoreless draw. A Smith free kick with three minutes remaining dipped on its way to the net and got lost in traffic. Didn t exactly go where I wanted, Smith said. Smith doesn t spend much time at practice honing her offensive arsenal. All she knows is to give it a good rip. If she misses, Kelly said, she better miss long, so as to not keep the goalie box vacated while play goes on. For the season, Smith has a 0.90 goals against average, off a hair from the 0.78 she posted a year ago. She has stopped 17 shots. On Wednesday, she was the lone goalie among 11 players named to Top Drawer Soccer s national team of the week.

Kelly s objective for Smith, 20, during a match in which Texas is being challenged is for her to make five routine saves and three extraordinary saves. All that s missing from Smith s game, according to Kelly, is experience. Goalies usually don t reach their peak until their late 20s. She s mature beyond her years, physically, emotionally, and mentally, Kelly said. She s just a gift to have coached thus far.
