1 Issue 1 Vol. 2 November 13 The Huddle OFFI CI AL NEW S OF T HE RB A The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination. Welcome MEET THE RBA STAFF Kyle Peterson Referee I am currently attending UMD for my Statistics & Actuarial Science Major with a Spanish minor. I am from Lakeville, MN and started playing basketball in the 2nd grade and played through high school and continue to play intramurals and pick up games at the gym at school. My favorite basketball team is the Minnesota Timberwolves. I like to play basketball in my free time and I do some graphic design in my spare time for fun as well. My favorite trip was to Mexico my senior year in high school. My favorite food is lasagna! Jamie Bodette Referee I am a physical education teacher for grades K-5 at Duluth Edison Charter Schools- Raleigh. I attended UMD in college for a B.S. in Education: K-12 Physical Education 5-12 Health Education. My home town is Wisconsin Rapids, WI. I started playing basketball in 4th grade and played through high school. I also played on an AAU team in high school. I enjoy watching the Wisconsin Badgers basketball teams. In my free time I enjoy anything outdoors: hiking, swimming, playing with my dog, and running. I have traveled to Belize, Australia, New Zealand, Guatamala, Bahamas and all over the United FAN ZONE Encouragement is important for our RBA Players. Cheering, clapping, and high fives are great ways to show players your encouragement. The RBA is an instructional league, meaning it is more important that our teams learn the fundamentals of basketball than beat their opponents by 50. Point spreads can be very discouraging to young players. You may notice if a team is leading by 20, score is not kept for the leading team. You and your family can help encourage all RBA players by cheering for made baskets as well as good plays, by BOTH teams. Traveling Double Dribble States. My favorite foods are cheese, pickles, ice cream, and peanut butter. Kris Mallett Coordinator I began playing basketball in 3rd grade at Piedmont. I went to Washington Jr., Duluth Central, and graduated from Bemidji State University with a degree in Sports Studies and Management. My favorite basketball teams are the Tennessee Lady Vols and Chicago Bulls. 3 of my summers were spent in Russia, Moldova and Ukraine. I home school my 3 kids, am head coach for the Lakeview Christian Academy girls basketball team and enjoy gardening and baking in my free time. The Game Two of the most common violations in the RBA are traveling and double dribble. Traveling is taking more than one and a half steps without dribbling while you have the ball. Also when you stop dribbling and then move or change your pivot foot. Double dribble occurs when a player stops dribbling, holds the basketball, and then starts dribbling again. Also when a player dribbles the ball with two hands at the same time. Please discuss these rules with your player to better their understanding of the game.

These nights are for players in the RBA to support area high school teams while getting inspired for their future playing basketball. Players and parents attending these nights must follow these guidelines set by the Athletic Directors: Kids wearing their RBA jersey will be admitted for free that night when accompanied by a parent or adult. Parents will need to pay their own fee. Only kids wearing their current RBA jersey will be admitted free. All RBA players must either be accompanied by an adult or coach at all times. No unsupervised players in the gym, concessions, or surrounding areas. The players must be on their best behavior. No horseplay! Remember you are representing the future of Duluth basketball! Working together for better basketball in Duluth. Fellowship of Christian Athletes My name is Erik Lofald and I am on staff with The Fellowship of Christian Athletes in Northeast Minnesota. I am a life-long Duluthian who loves sports and God, which led me to joining the FCA staff. I also coach football and basketball at my alma mater Duluth Denfeld. My role with RBA is to serve the league by helping Kris Mallett carry out the vision of the RBA. Kris approached FCA about partnering with RBA to develop the youth in both basketball and character. We not only teach the youth the FUNdamentals of basketball, but of life as well. We do this by incorporating The Marks of Excellence which are: love, joy, peace, patience, self-control, kindness, faithfulness, goodness, and gentleness. An example of this would be when playing basketball how do you love your teammates? What are devoted actions in basketball that benefit others? One way you love your teammates is by passing the ball instead of grabbing the rebound, running down the court, and chucking up a shot! From there we connect that Mark to life outside of basketball. Where in life do you need to have love? I believe the Marks of Excellence is what sets the RBA apart from other youth leagues. RBA genuinely cares about the youth that participate and want to develop them into a whole person not just a great athlete. Duluth Police Dept. Hello, my name is Officer Tom Sewell and I am a West Community Officer with the Duluth Police Department. I have been a member of the Duluth Police Department since 2010 and have been a Police Officer since I live in Cloquet with my wonderful family consisting of my wife and three young children (4, 2, and 3month). I truly feel blessed to be in this profession and enjoy what I do. I strongly feel that the best way to build any relationship is with positive interactions. During this year s basketball league and hopefully future ones I will be stopping in to interact with the children. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. tsewell@duluthmn.gov

3 Hoops for Hope Help us help others! Hoops for hope is a way for RBA families to get involved in the mission of The Salvation Army and help those in need. Each issue of The Huddle will describe a program The Salvation Army has for families in need in Duluth and will give a specific way your family can help. Then on specific Saturdays our referees will collect the items to distribute with the help of Salvation Army staff. This year we are kicking off the season with a toy drive. Players and their families should bring a new, unwrapped gift for newborn through 16 years old to donate to the Toyland Express toy drive. Over 2,500 children in our community will be celebrating a very different Christmas. Help us change that. Need help deciding what to purchase? Have your player choose something they would like. On Saturday, December 7, RBA referees will collect toys at the scorers table at The Salvation Army and at The Encounter. Contact The Salvation Army if you are interested in Adopting a Family or hosting a decorated Toy Box at your business. 4 Dunkin in Duluth The RBA 3 on 3 tournament was a great day. Hillside Sports Courts were a great venue for the 17 teams to compete, improve their game, participate in 3 point and free throw competitions, and make new friends. Mayor Don Ness threw the opening tip off, the UMD Men s Basketball team refereed all the games, and a bouncy house entertained siblings. Players received a t-shirt, water bottle, and award. Over $500 in prizes were donated by the community and given to participants and spectators. Our goal for the tournament was to enjoy a beautiful city park, unite the basketball community in the Duluth area, and improve the health of basketball in Duluth. If you were there you witnessed it, if you were not there, make plans with your teammates to form a team and clear your calendar for next year! For more information contact the RBA office. 5 extra time? Volunteer! Do you have free time this holiday season? Are you looking for a way your family can give back to others in our community? Players will take turns ringing a bell and dribbling a basketball along the parade route. All participants must complete a parade waiver. If you or your player are interested please contact Kris at , parade spaces will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. Rba superior Did you know The Salvation Army in Superior, Wisconsin has an RBA program? This season we will begin to play a few games against these 3rd & 4th grade teams here in Duluth. A schedule for these games will be ed out once it is available. Our hope is to hold a mid-season tournament for the two leagues next season. 6 The Minnesota Timberwolves FastBreak Foundation is proud to begin another season of the Starting Five program. Education and literacy continue to be the top initiative of the National Basketball Association and the Minnesota Timberwolves FastBreak Foundation. Since its inception, students from over 1,500 schools across the state of Minnesota have read over 12 million pages through the Starting Five program. This year, the Rookie Basketball Association will continue the success of the program by encouraging players to spend their spare time at home reading and at the same time encouraging players to work hard academically. How the Program Works Students who read 500 pages or more at home will be rewarded with a Timberwolves prize package including a Timberwolves prize, bookmark, poster and a buy-one-get-one ticket offer to a Timberwolves game. What You Need to Do Starting November 4th, 2013 and ending January 6th, 2014, students will track the number of pages read at home. Coaches will hand out tracking pages for players. In mid February coaches will collect the tracking pages and the RBA office will send them to the Timberwolves. Prize packages will be delivered in early March and handed out by coaches. RBA curriculum For some of your players, this season is a continuation, a building of the skills you have been working on for quite some time. For some, this is your first time stepping out on the court. A lot of planning and preparation have gone into this season. This year all coaches received an RBA Coach s Guide based on a variety of resources, one of the main sources being the Canadian Long Term Athlete Development Model. The RBA Coach s Guide lists expectations, developmental levels of youth, skills players may have and drills coaches can use as well as other tools to help teams understand basketball and become better players. LOST & FOUND The Salvation Army is not responsible for lost items, if you lose something, please contact the RBA office. Remaining items will be donated to The Salvation Army Thrift Store at the end of the season. Rba bell ringing Each year the Rookie Basketball Association players and their families volunteer to bell ring for The Salvation Army on Christmas Eve. This year families will have the opportunity to ring again. Families sign up for a minimum 2- hour shift between 10:00am-3:00pm. The locations available are: Miller Hill Mall Applebees entrance Miller Hill Mall Noodles & Co. entrance Gander Mountain Mall Super One Lakeside Super One Shopko If you are interested, please contact RBA Coordinator Kris Mallett at
