1 Issue 1 Vol. 3 Nov/Dec 14 The Huddle O F F I C I A L N E W S O F T H E R B A The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination. Welcome to the RBa - Meet the Staff Travaughn Kinney Referee Travaughn is majoring in Athletic Training at St. Scholastica. He is from southeast Washington, DC. Tray began playing basketball at age 3. He as always been a good basketball player, even scored 25 points against All- American Josh Hart, and expects to get better. His favorite college team is the Michigan Wolverines and NBA team is the Miami Heat. Tray s favorite trip was to Florida. His favorite food is fried BBQ Chicken. Ken Rocco Burton Jr. Referee Ken s major at St. Scholastica is Social Work. He is from East Baltimore, Maryland where he began playing basketball in 4th grade. Ken had teammates that are now in the NBA. In 2009 his team won the state championship. One of his great memories is meeting Muggsy Bogues and getting his rec ball sneakers signed. Ken s favorite NBA team is the New York Knicks, he watches all their games. His favorite trip was to baseball championships in high school. Ken s favorite food is Chinese. Kris Mallett Coordinator Kris began playing basketball in 3rd grade at Piedmont then went to Washington Jr., Duluth Central, and graduated from Bemidji State University with a degree in Sports Studies and Management. Her favorite basketball teams are the Tennessee Lady Vols and Chicago Bulls. Her favorite trips were to different parts of Russia. She home schools her 3 kids, and is head coach for the Lakeview Christian Academy girls basketball team. Christmas City of the North Parade A Northland tradition. The parade signals the beginning of the holiday season. Again, the Rookie Basketball Association will be marching in the parade! Kids and parents are needed to walk behind The Salvation Army mobile kitchen. Participants will be given RBA shirts to wear over their coats. Players will take turns ringing a bell and dribbling a basketball along the parade route. If you or your player are interested please contact Kris at , parade spaces will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. FAN ZONE Encouragement is important for our RBA Players. Cheering, clapping, and high fives are great ways to show players your encouragement. The RBA is an instructional league, meaning it is more important that our teams learn the fundamentals of basketball than beat their opponents by 50. Point spreads can be very discouraging to young players. You may notice if a team is leading by 20, score is not kept for the leading team. You and your family can help encourage all RBA players by cheering for made baskets as well as good plays, by BOTH teams. Traveling Double Dribble The Game Two of the most common violations in the RBA are traveling and double dribble. Traveling is taking more than one and a half steps without dribbling while you have the ball. Also, when you stop dribbling and then move or change your pivot foot. Double dribble occurs when a player stops dribbling, holds the basketball, and then starts dribbling again. Also when a player dribbles the ball with two hands at the same time. Please discuss these rules with your player to better their understanding of the game.

3 Meet the Coaches Coach Peter FOrbort When did you start working with the RBA? I started coaching last season with the RBA Did you play basketball & where? I played intramurals at Washing Jr, Duluth Central HS, at UMD. Also 3 years in the Air Force in Germany. What do you like most about coaching in the RBA? I like to coach because basketball is all about movement. It s not just a quick play and go back into a huddle or wait for the pitcher to throw a baseball. There is no time to get bored. Why do you coach? I coached 15 years at Grant grade school and in that time I coached both of my children and a niece. Now I have the opportunity to coach my grandson and I love it. Who is a coach who impacted you as a player and person? My Dad. He coached me in basketball and fastpitch softball in the Evangelical church leagues back in the late 50 s and early 60 s. He lit the spark in me for coaching. What do you think is the most important skill players neglect to work on? Shooting properly is a tough challenge, especially off the dribble. I see lots of set shots being taken and it takes a lot of energy to get the ball to the basket. A good jump shot off the dribble takes care of that. What is your favorite college team? I try to keep tabs on UMD Men and Women s basketball. What is your favorite food? Fried chicken, baked potato and corn on the cob!!! Coach andel brown When did you start working with the RBA? Just started in 2014 after a very short stint in 2006 officiating in it. Did you play basketball & where? I played only in high school, Bonham, Texas. What do you like most about coaching in the RBA? I love the bond that is created between players, and the looks of achievement. Why do you coach? Because my kids said they weren t playing unless I did. Who is a coach who impacted you as a player and person? Matthew Krivinchuk What do you think is the most important skill players neglect to work on? Defense What is your favorite college team? Not big in college...i d have to go with Texas here, but Minnesota is growing on me. NBA team? Dallas Mavericks What is your favorite food? Catfish The Minnesota Timberwolves FastBreak Foundation is proud to begin another season of the Starting Five program. Education and literacy continue to be the top initiative of the National Basketball Association and the Minnesota Timberwolves FastBreak Foundation. Since its inception, students from over 1,500 schools across the state of Minnesota have read over 12 million pages through the Starting Five program. This year, the Rookie Basketball Association will continue the success of the program by encouraging players to spend their spare time at home reading and at the same time encouraging players to work hard academically. How the Program Works Students who read 500 pages or more at home will be rewarded with a Timberwolves prize package including a Timberwolves prize, bookmark, poster and a buy-one-get-one ticket offer to a Timberwolves game. What You Need to Do Starting November 15th, 2014 and ending January 5th, 2015, students will track the number of pages read at home. In mid January coaches will collect the tracking pages and the RBA office will send them to the Timberwolves. Prize packages will be delivered in early March and handed out by coaches.

4 Dunkin IN Duluth The RBA 3 on 3 tournament, Dunkin in Duluth was an exciting event. At Hillside Sports Courts 13 teams, grades 2-9, improved their game, participate in 3 point and free throw competitions, and made new friends. The UMD Men s and Women s Basketball teams refereed all the games, free water and snacks were available and a bouncy house entertained resting players and siblings. All teams received a t-shirt and prize pack plus individual coupon packs. Over $2,000 in prizes were donated by the community and given to participants and spectators. The goal for the tournament was to enjoy a beautiful city park, unite the basketball community in the Duluth area, and improve the health of basketball in Duluth. If you were there you witnessed it, if you were not there, make plans with your teammates to form a team and clear your calendar for next year! Fellowship of Christian Athletes I hope you are all excited for another season of RBA basketball! My name is Erik Lofald and I am on staff with The Fellowship of Christian Athletes in Northeast Minnesota. I am a life-long Duluthian who loves sports and God, which led me to joining the FCA staff. I also coach football and basketball at my alma mater Duluth Denfeld. Our Denfeld boys team started on November 10 th and I can t wait! My role with RBA is to serve the league by helping Kris Mallett carry out the vision of the RBA. Kris approached FCA about partnering with RBA to develop the youth in both basketball and character. We not only teach the youth the FUNdamentals of basketball, but of life as well. We do this by incorporating The Marks of Excellence which are: love, joy, peace, patience, self-control, kindness, faithfulness, goodness, and gentleness. I believe the Marks of Excellence is what sets the RBA apart from other youth leagues. RBA genuinely cares about the youth that participate and want to develop them into a whole person not just a great athlete. This month s featured Mark of Excellence is FAITHFULNESS. Faithfulness is taking responsibility for your actions and being accountable to others. We see this mark being displayed when players listen to and do what their coach asks them. Basketball is a team sport, and with all team sports you are accountable not only to your coaches but to your teammates as well. They need to be able to trust that you are going to run the play called in the huddle or guard the correct person during the game. They also expect you to own your mistakes and learn from them instead of blaming them on others. Sport culture is flawed by many examples of players and even coaches not being accountable. We often times blame a loss or mistake on the referee, another player, another coach or some other circumstance instead of taking responsibility for our actions. Let s all try to be faithful in being the best coaches and teammates we can be this year! Reminder: NO practice or games November 27, 28, 29 Due to Thanksgiving No practices or games at The Salvation Army AFTER Saturday, December 6, due to Toy and Food distribution in the gym.

5 Hoops for Hope Help us help others! Saturday Hoops for hope is a way for RBA families to get involved in the mission of The Salvation Army and help those in need. Each issue of The Huddle will describe a program The Salvation Army has for families in need in Duluth and will give a specific way your family can help. Then on specific Saturdays our referees will collect the items to distribute with the help of Salvation Army staff. This year we are kicking off the season with a toy drive. Players and their families should bring a new, unwrapped gift for newborn through 16 years old to donate to the Toyland Express toy drive. Over 2,500 children in our community will be celebrating a very different Christmas. Help us change that. Need help deciding what to purchase? Have your player choose something they would like. Games, dolls, CDs, basketballs, movies, legos, stuffed animals and art supplies are needed. On Saturday, December 6, RBA referees will collect toys at the scorers table at The Salvation Army and at The Encounter. Contact The Salvation Army if you are interested in Adopting a Family or hosting a decorated Toy Box at your business. 6 The Rookie Basketball Association would like to thank these local sponsors: Pro Team Sponsors ($1,000+) Varsity Team Sponsors $300+ RBA OPEN GYM Thursdays through out the RBA season the RBA will be holding open gyms. Lowell elementary school will be the location and the time will be from 5-6pm. Parents must sign players in and out of the open gym. As with all RBA programming 2 adults must be present in the gym, including the referee who will be supervising. The referee will also be available to help work on skills. Did you know? The Rookie Basketball Association Curriculum is based on the Long Term Athlete Development Model from Canada. Science, research and decades of experience all point to the same thing: kids and adults will get active, stay active, and even reach the greatest heights of sport achievement if they do the right things at the right times. This is the logic behind the Long-Term Athlete Development model (LTAD). The character training used in the RBA has been developed from InsideOut Coaching, by Joe Ehrmann and 3Dimensional Coaching by Fellowship of Christian Athletes, which this year has been adopted by the Minnesota State High School League for their coaches, Why We Play training.
