1 GONZAGA BASKETBALL HISTORY For 96 years Gonzaga University basketball teams have been an important part of the athletic scene in the Inland Northwest - from early days in the NAIA small college ranks to recent times competing as Spokane s only NCAA Division I representative. Perhaps no team in recent memory has captured the hearts and imagination of the city and nation like the 1999 version of the Bulldogs with their run to the NCAA Elite Eight. The city and campus were electrified with the Zags explosion into the national limelight. History shows the Zags reached new heights in the 40 s, making trips to the National Intercollegiate Basketball Tournament (known today as the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) in 1948 and again in But as success grew more frequent, so did the program s need to expand. So, in 1958, Gonzaga officially outgrew NAIA status and began competing as a NCAA independent. It was easier to be unaffiliated in those days. But as the years wore on, it became apparent a conference affiliation would help Gonzaga s basketball program prosper. The Big Sky Conference became Gonzaga s first conference affiliation, the Bulldogs becoming a charter member in 1963 as the only non-football institution in the new league. Many believe Gonzaga s membership in the Big Sky was welcomed to add academic prestige to the league. The program continued to thrive through the 60 s and early 70 s under Hank Anderson, the mid-70 s under Adrian Buoncristiani and reached new levels in the 80 s with Dan Fitzgerald and Jay Hillock at the helm. Fitzgerald, who passed the coaching reigns to Dan Monson following the 1997 season following his second stint on the Bulldogs sidelines, guided the program into the decade of the 90 s. After two seasons under Monson, guidance of the Gonzaga program was passed into the capable hands of Mark Few, the sixth head coach in the programs NCAA Division I history. It was in Fitzgerald s second season as head coach in that the Zags took a step to join the West Coast Conference. Fitz s team responded to the new challenge and posted a record. The next season Gonzaga finished 19-8, just behind the University of San Francisco and Pepperdine University for the league title and received strong consideration for a National Invitational Tournament (NIT) bid. Gonzaga has had a long history of producing great individuals on and off the court. Hank Anderson was probably as instrumental as anyone in the positive development of the program as coach and as athletic director, a dual role Fitzgerald also shouldered. The dean of GU basketball coaches, Anderson compiled a record in 21 seasons, coaching some of the school s most noted athletes. Among the standouts on Anderson s teams was Frank Burgess, who led the nation in scoring in with a 32.4 average and was named Associated Press second-team All-America. He still reigns as the alltime leading scorer in Bulldog history. Bill Suter was a two-time United Press International Small All-America (under 6-0) pick in 1965 and again in 66. Gary Lechman was twice a Helms Foundation All-America, Playing for coaches Claude McGrath and L.T. Underwood, Rich Evans was named Catholic Digest All-America in Fitzgerald ranks as the school s second-winningest coach with 254 wins, surpassing the 129 wins McGrath compiled during his 12-year tenure at GU. Fitzgerald passed McGrath in 1990 when Gonzaga defeated Howard University in the inaugural game of the Shootout Spokane. Fitzgerald was responsible for recruiting six All-America performers. The first was floppy-haired Bill Dunlap who came out of Lower Columbia Community College to earn honorable mention All-America honors in Next came John Stockton, who like Dunlap, was an Associated Press honorable mention All-America as well as an academic All-America. Stockton, the final player cut in the 1984 U.S. Olympic trials, became Gonzaga s first first-round draft pick in the National Basketball Association when selected by the Utah Jazz. Stockton s Olympic dream came true when he was selected in September, 1991, to be a part of the 1992 U.S. Olympic Dream Team, the first time players from the NBA were allowed to compete for the United States. In 1996 Stockton was again selected to the Olympic Dream Team, helping the U.S. capture the gold medal in Atlanta, GA. Then came Bryce McPhee, followed by younger brother Jim McPhee. Bryce was GU s first-ever first-team Academic All-America pick, and Jim earned second team honors for his academic prowess. Rhodes Scholar applicant Jarrod Davis was a second-team Academic All-America selection as a junior in 1991, and a first-team pick as a senior, while Jeff Brown earned third team honors as a sophomore in 1992 and first-team accolades as a junior and senior in 1993 and 94, respectively. Brown was also named the recipient of the 7th annual Anson Mount Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was the Academic All-American Player of the Year on the GTE/College Sports Information Directors of America 1994 Academic All-America team. Bryce McPhee, Stockton, Dunlap, Davis and Brown were also named WCC Scholar-Athletes of the Year. Gonzaga continued its streak of All-Americans and West Coast Conference Players of the Year as the coaching reigns changed hands to Monson. In 1998, Bakari Hendrix was named the WCC Player of the Year joining past Gonzaga recipients Stockton (1984) and Brown (1994). That team started Gonzaga s second run of three straight years with a post-season berth the last two trips ending at the NCAA Elite Eight and Sweet Sixteen. Matt Santangelo received honorable mention All-America 68 honors following the 1999 season. The 1999 team may be the most celebrated in school history. Four players were named to the All-WCC first team - Santangelo, Quentin Hall, Richie Frahm and Jeremy Eaton. The fifth starter - Casey Calvary - was accorded honorable mention honors. Santangelo also joined Stockton as a Gonzaga gold medalist, helping lead USA Basketball to the World University Games gold in Spain in He was also named to Playboy s pre-season All-America team that same summer. Paul Rogers became Gonzaga s latest Olympian in 2000 as he represented his home nation of Australia at the Sydney Games. In the summer of 1999 the coaching reigns were once again passed along to a Gonzaga assistant as Few was announced as the Zags top man. Coming off the national attention created by an Elite Eight run, Gonzaga responded by playing one of its toughest schedules in history with games against nationally ranked Temple and No. 1 Cincinnati. In a battle for Best in the West, Gonzaga defeated UCLA for one of its greatest victories in the long Bulldog history. The Bulldogs capped the 2000 season with their second straight run deep into the NCAA tournament. A final season No. 24 ranking and Sweet Sixteen appearance have helped establish Gonzaga as a true basketball power in the Pacific Northwest. Santangelo, Frahm and Calvary were all named first-team All-WCC, while starter Mike Nilson was named the WCC Defensive Player of the Year. In 2001 Gonzaga again returned to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen and finished the season with a No. 20 ranking. The Zags continued to impress people on a national level with Calvary earning John R. Wooden second-team All-American honors. In addition Gonzaga became the first school to sweep the West Coast Conference honors with Calvary earning Player of the Year honors, Few earning Coach of the Year honors, Blake Stepp earning Freshman of the Year honors and Mark Spink earning Defender of the Year honors. In addition Dan Dickau was named a first-team All- WCC selection and played for the USA National Team as the World University games in China. The 2002 season became a banner year for the Bulldogs program as the team finished the season ranked No. 6 in the Associated Press poll and posted a school record 29 wins. Dickau grabbed the nation s attention with individual honors as the senior point guard was named the school s first first-team Associated Press All-America. He would go on to earn John R. Wooden Award Player of the Year Top Five All-America honors and be drafted in the first round of the 2002 NBA draft by the Sacramento Kings. In 2003 Gonzaga once again ventured into March Madness as the Bulldogs received the school s first at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament after winning their third straight West Coast Conference regular-season crown. Gonzaga was knocked out of the tournament by No. 1 seed Arizona in one of the best games of the 2003 NCAA Tournament, if not all time. The 2004 season set new standards for the GU men s basketball program as the Zags climbed to a No. 2 spot in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches poll and No. 3 slot in the Associated Press poll. Gonzaga posted a 28-3 record with a 14-0 mark in WCC action and a school-record 20-game win streak. Gonzaga was rewarded with a No. 2 seed in the 2004 NCAA Tournament, the highest ever for a WCC school. GU ended the season with two players earning AP All-American honors, Blake Stepp a secondteam selection and Ronny Turiaf an honorable mention pick. A proud athletic tradition coupled with academic excellence. That s the tradition of Bulldog basketball. Gonzaga's student run organization "The Kennel Club" is in part responsible for the nightmares other teams have when thinking about a trip to play the Bulldogs on their home court. Started by a group of students and Gonzaga baseball players in 1984, The Kennel Club has evolved into a 700-plus member, student run organization which is a vital part of making the Gonzaga basketball experience one-of-a-kind. Mike Shields, one of the club s founders, remembers former coach Jay Hillock once telling him The Kennel Club was worth 6 to 8 points a game for the Bulldogs. Over the 17 years of The Kennel Club's existence the Bulldogs have won more than 75 percent of their games including more than 90 percent during the last eight seasons. Gonzaga currently has the nation's third longest home winning streak. On Feb. 16, 2002, the Kennel Club received its first national exposure when the Bulldogs played their first nationally televised game from The Kennel, a victory over Pepperdine on ESPN2. During the club's run at Gonzaga they have been very creative in their chants about opposing players and coaches. Shields remembers in the club s early days when the group spelled out the word 'toupee' to greet Loyola Marymount head coach Ed Goorjian. The coach approached the club after the game and expressed his thoughts about the value of the club, simply saying "I wish we had guys like you at LMU." Kennel Club photos by Allen Hubbard
