The Mids led with five minutes left, but went just 2-of-7 from the field and committed two of their three second-half turnovers down the stretch to fall to Monmouth, Navy led by as many as five points on two different occasions, but the Hawks answered with a 7-0 run the first time and a 9-1 run in the second half to re-take the lead both times. The Hawks shot 58.0 percent from the field (29-of-50) after entering the game shooting just 35.8 percent from the field for the season. Monmouth also outrebounded the Midshipmen, J.J. Avila led Navy with 14 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals in a fine all-around floor game. Jordan Sugars added 12 points, Jordan Brickman scored 11 points with a career-high eight assists and Worth Smith netted a career-high 11 points with four rebounds and three steals. Navy turned the ball over a season-low 12 times and shot 24-of-51 (.471) from the field, and was 10-of-28 (.357) from three-point range. Notables From Monmouth Navy started Sugars (63rd career / 28th cons.), Avila (29 / 11), Roberts (23 / 3), Brickman (7 / 7) and Worth Smith (4 / 4). It was the third straight game with this starting lineup (now 0-3). Navy's 67 points were the most since scoring 88 against Penn State Altoona on Nov. 13 in the second game of the year. Monmouth s 58.0 percent shooting was the highest for an opponent since Holy Cross shot 61.7 percent against the Mids on Jan. 20, The 58.0 percent shooting was also the highest for an opponent at Alumni Hall since Lehigh shot 59.2 percent on Feb. 8, Navy lost for the first time when having four or more players score in double figures (now 3-1). Navy also lost for the first time when shooting 45.0 percent or better (now 3-1). Navy is now 2-5 in games decided by single digits and 0-3 in games decided by three or fewer points. Navy recorded season highs in three-pointers made (10) and attempted (28). The Mids were 14-of-23 (.609) from inside the arc. Navy Seniors Get Service Assignments Service assignments were handed out on Wednesday, Nov. 30 to all of Navy s 1,135 seniors and Navy s three seniors on the basketball team received their first choice. Jordan Sugars and Carlton Smith each received Surface Warfare Officer (Surface Warfare Officers are Navy officers whose training and primary duties focus on the operation of Navy ships at sea and the management of various shipboard systems). Ted Connolly received the Special Warfare assignment of Navy SEAL (Sea, Air and Land Teams -- U.S. Navy's principal special operations force and a part of the Naval Special Warfare Command (NSWC) as well as the maritime component of the United States Special Operations Command). As part of SEAL tradition, on the day that SEALS receive their assignments, the collective group shaves their heads and eyebrows, hence Connolly s somewhat freshly-shorn head. Success Inside the Arc Navy has had very good success this year when shooting inside the three-point line, not so much when outside the line. Date Game 2-Pt. 3-Pt. Total at Longwood PSU Altoona at Siena at Quinnipiac Tulane at Albany Mount St. Mary s at Md.-East. Shore at Elon Monmouth TOTALS PERCENTAGE Can t Find a Lineup Navy has had five different starting lineups during the nine games played already this year. Head coach Ed DeChellis appears to have maybe settled on a starting lineup as the last three games have featured the same starting lineups of Jordan Brickman, Isaiah Roberts, Jordan Sugars, Worth Smith and J.J. Avila. So far this year, nine different players have earned starting nods. Road Warriors Eight of Navy s first 12 games of the season will come away from Annapolis. Last year s schedule featured 10 games away from Annapolis in the first 12 outings. Navy will not have a homestand until Dec. 30 to Jan. 7 when it hosts Mercer, Norfolk State and Lafayette. Since the season started on Nov. 11, Navy has not had more than two consecutive days of practice between games. The Mids opened on Nov. 11 at Longwood, played at home Nov. 13 against Penn State Altoona, giving Navy one day of practice between games. Following the PSU Altoona game, Navy had two days of practice before the Siena game on Nov. 16. Because of NCAA rules, Navy needed to take Nov. 17 off, giving the Midshipmen one day of practice for Quinnipiac in a game played Nov. 19. Navy then practiced twice for Tulane on Nov. 22, and again had to take Wednesday, Nov. 23 off because of NCAA regulations. Navy then prepared in one day for Albany before one day of preparation for Mount St. Mary s on Sunday. Navy took Monday off (NCAA rules), practiced on Tuesday and will play UMES on Wednesday night. Navy practiced on Thursday and Friday before its six-hour bus ride to Elon for Saturday s game. The first time Navy will have three days of preparation for a game this year will come for the Dec. 10 game against highly-ranked Missouri in Columbia, Mo. The Mids play Tuesday, Dec. 6 vs. Monmouth, then get three days to look at the Tigers, even though the team did not practice on December 7. Mids Struggling In Late-Game Situations Navy has shown its youth and inexperience early on in the season, especially late in games. Navy has held leads or been within five points with less than five minutes to go in all of its losses but one (Quinnipiac). Here is a microcosm of what happened in those five losses. Siena -- Navy trailed with 48 seconds left, but two straight turnovers in the final 30 seconds cost Navy any chance at a rally and Siena scored the game s final five points for a decision. Tulane -- Navy led with 4:24 to play, but went 0-of-5 with two turnovers down the stretch as Tulane scored the last four points of the game for a setback. Albany -- After a furious Navy rally cut an Albany lead from 20 to four points, Navy failed to block out on a missed free throw and Albany would make two free throws on the ensuing possession with 1:40 left. to push the lead back to six. Navy could get no closer than four points the rest of the way. UMES -- Navy trailed with 6:11 to play, but made just 1-of-5 field goals with two turnovers down the stretch and the Hawks outscored Navy 13-3 in the final six minutes for the 13-point victory. Elon -- Led with 3:33 left to play, but failed to even attempt a field goal in the last 3:30, turning the ball over three times and allowing Elon to end the game on a 9-3 spurt. Monmouth -- Led with 5:08 left and had three chances to extend lead off offensive rebounds. The Mids went just 2-of-7 from the field and had two of their three second-half turnovers during the stretch. Navy s field goals came in a rally mode in the final 48 seconds of the contest. Balancing Act Navy has had 11 players already score in double figures in just 10 games this year. In 31 games last year, Navy had nine players reach double figures. Just five of the players this year have more than one double-figure outing this year. In games that Navy has at least four players in double figures, the Midshipmen are 3-1, falling to Monmouth on Tuesday. When Navy has three or fewer players in double figures, the Midshipmen are 0-6.

Home Away The DeChellis Way When Navy director of athletics Chet Gladchuk hired Ed DeChellis in late May 2011, DeChellis brought with him a disciplined, defensive mindset as evidenced by his eight previous years at Penn State. Already in his first year at Navy, DeChellis has taken a Navy program that has accustomed to playing an up-tempo style while shooting a lot of three-pointers to the style he wants to employ. And while there will be growing pains, Navy fans are starting to see the transformation. NCAA Ranks of DeChellis Teams Since 2004 ( at PSU) Year PFs/Gm. TOs/Gm. Reb. Mar. The Mids enter Saturday s game with Missouri with a 1, record in its 105th season. Young Guns Stepping It Up Again Head coach Ed DeChellis is going to have to rely on young players as 16 of the 20 members of the squad are freshman or sophomores and the lone junior, Jordan Brickman, is essentially a newcomer after sitting out the last two seasons. The group has responded well and should continue to improve as the year goes on. Navy s freshmen are averaging 14.9 points per game this year (24.1 percent). Combined with the sophomore class that is averaging 28.4 points per game, the two classes are accounting for 43.3 points per game or 70.1 percent (433-of-618) of Navy s scoring this year. This year s sophomores set the school record a year ago for points scored by a group of freshmen, when it tallied 762 points, an average of 24.6 points per game, or 36.1 percent of the team s 2,113 points. The 11 fouls were the fewest for a Navy team since having 11 against Delaware Valley College on Dec. 17, 2006 and the fewest against a Division I opponent since having nine against Harvard on Jan. 4, Last year, Navy ranked 297th nationally, averaging 20.9 personal fouls per game. Navy is 65th this year, averaging 16.9 per game. Year Fouls Per Game NCAA Rk The Future Is Now When Navy takes the court in , it will do so as one of the nation s youngest teams. Navy will have three seniors, one junior, six sophomores and six freshmen on the traveling roster entering the year. The total amount of games played by the nine returnees is just 306, with 87 of them coming from senior captain Jordan Sugars. The combined number of starts by the nine returnees entering the season was just 102, with 53 coming from Sugars. Navy ranks as the 10th-youngest, least-experienced team in America for the upcoming season. Of Navy s 16 players on the roster, 12 are freshmen or sophomores and the lone junior, Jordan Brickman, did not play basketball his first two years at Navy. If you were to include Navy s preseason roster, which included four more freshmen, the Midshipmen would be the least-experienced team in the country (0.70 years). Navy has lost seven of its last eight games after starting the year 2-0. Navy s 2-0 start was the program s first since the season. Navy has lost five straight road games after opening the season with a victory at Longwood. The Mids have lost the five games by margins of 9, 24, 7, 13 and 3 for an average margin of 11.2 points per game. Navy is 0-3 in games decided by three or fewer points and is just 2-5 in games decided by single digits, with wins over Longwood (78-70) and Mount St. Mary s (64-56). In the previous seven seasons ( ), Navy was (.563) in games decided by three or fewer points. When opponents shoot better than Navy, the Mids are just 1-7 with the lone win coming against Mount St. Mary s. Navy has shot over 45.0 percent in four separate games this year, posting a 3-1 record when doing so. In 31 games during the season, Navy shot over 45.0 percent 11 times, posting a 7-4 record. In the previous seven seasons ( ), Navy was (.757) when attempting more free throws than its opponent. This year so far, Navy is just 3-4 (.429). Since the start of last year, Navy is 7-17 (.292) in the months of November and December. Last year, after the calendar turned to January, Navy went 7-10 (.412). Navy has lost six straight games in the month of December by an average margin of just 6.2 points per game. Navy has not had a double-digit lead since owning a 14-point lead against Mount St. Mary s on Nov. 30, a span of three games. If you throw out the Mount St. Mary s game, Navy has not had a lead greater than six points (first half vs. Siena) in the last eight contests. In Navy s three wins, the Mids have led for a total of 101:50 of a total of 120 minutes (84.9 percent). In Navy s seven losses, opponents have led for 206:17 of a possible 280 minutes (73.7 percent). On the previous page, we have a graph that shows Navy as the 10th-youngest, least-experienced team in the country. If you would have included Navy s preseason roster that included 10 freshmen, six sophomores, a junior that had not played and its three seniors, Navy would have been the youngest team in America. Since the preseason started, four players, all freshmen, have been sent to the junior varsity causing the drop in rank. Navy Team Defense Update Navy has held five of its 10 opponents to 59 or fewer points, but Navy is just 2-3 during those five occurrences. Navy had held three straight opponents (Mount St. Mary s - 56; Md.-Eastern Shore - 59; Elon - 51) to 59 or fewer points before Monmouth scored 69 points on Tuesday night. It had marked the first time since the season that Navy had held three straight opponents to 59 or fewer points. From the to seasons (four years), Navy held just 13 of a possible 121 opponents (10.7 percent) to 59 or fewer points. This year s team has held five of its 10 opponents (50.0 percent) to 59 or fewer points. Navy currently ranks second in the Patriot League, and 81st nationally, in scoring defense, allowing just 62.8 ppg. Bucknell (61.8 ppg) is the only Patriot League team ahead of Navy. Since Quinnipiac scored 78 points on November, 19, Navy has held all of its foes to 69 or fewer points, allowing just 60.2 points per game. Navy is, however, just 1-5 in those games. Elon s 51 points were the fewest points an opponent scored against Navy since Lafayette scored 44 points on Jan. 16, Navy has not finished in the Patriot League s top four in scoring defense since the season. Navy ranked 333rd last year in rebounding margin with a school-record low minus-9.4 margin. This year s team has already outrebounded four opponents and owns a plus-0.6 rebounding advantage, ranking third in the Patriot League (Bucknell +6.1; Lehigh +0.9). Navy took a step back against Monmouth in the rebounding category, being outboarded by the Hawks, Navy grabbed just two defensive rebounds in the second half, while Monmouth had nine offensive rebounds. Navy s second-half defensive rebounds came at the 8:26 mark (team) and 4:49 mark (Sugars). Navy is 3-1 when outrebounding its opponents, losing to Elon last Saturday. The Midshipmen outrebounded just five opponents in 31 games during all of the season. Navy has not allowed a team to score 80 points yet this year. Just once in the last 10 years ( ) has Navy not allowed an opponent to score 80 points in any of the first 10 games of the year. Monmouth s 58.0 percent shooting equaled the highest for an opponent at Alumni Hall since Lehigh shot 59.2 percent on Feb. 8, Navy Team Offense Update Navy is shooting just 39.8 percent from the field and 25.4 percent from three-point range on the road, averaging 59.0 points per game. Navy had 41 assists against 30 turnovers (1.37 assist-to-turnover ratio) in the first two games of the season. In the last eight games, Navy has 87 assists against 128 turnovers (0.68 assist-to-turnover ratio). Navy s 12 turnovers against Monmouth were a season low and the fewest since having nine against Colgate on Feb. 26, Navy had just three second-half turnovers against the Hawks, but two came in the final four minutes of the game. After shooting 62-of-112 (.554) from the field in the first two game of the season, Navy is shooting just 157-of-397 (.395) from the field in the last eight games (1-7). After starting the season by shooting 74-of-109 (.679) from the free throw line in the first six games, Navy has shot 50-of-64 (.781) from the charity stripe in the last four games. Navy s free throw percentage has jumped 38 points as a team in the last four games. Navy has nine more offensive rebounds this year (97) than last year (88) through 10 games, despite having 85 fewer field goal attempts and just three fewer made field goals. Navy s offensive rebound percentage this year is 30.4 percent. Last year through 10 games, it was 21.4 percent, and for the entire season the percentage was just 22.8 percent. Navy s 10 three-pointers and 28 three-point attempts against Monmouth were a season high. Navy had just 23 two-point attempts. In the first half of games this year, Navy has had 67 assists against 91 turnovers and is 28-of-103 (.272) from deep. In the second half, Navy has 61 assists against 67 turnovers and are shooting 28-of-89 (.315) from three-point range. Opponents are shooting 46.4 percent in the second half. Navy s big three returnees of Jordan Sugars, J.J. Avila and Isaiah Roberts (all Patriot League award winners last year) are shooting a combined 23-of-92 (.250) from three-point range for the year, and in the last eight games, the trio is shooting 15-of-75 (.200) from three-point range. The remainder of the team is shooting 33-of-100 (.330) from long distance for the season. J.J. Avila has led the team in scoring in four straight games and six times this year. He has scored 14 points in each of the last three games. Navy s three main point guards (Jordan Brickman, Kevin Alter and Brennan Wyatt) are averaging a combined 7.7 points per game and have 34 assists against 29 turnovers (1.17 ratio) in 36.5 minutes per game. Navy vs. The Big 12 Navy will be looking for its first win against a team currently in the Big 12 since Dec. 30, 1970, a overtime decision over Baylor in Dallas, Texas. Since then, Navy has lost five straight games to the conference, including last year s setback to Texas in the 2KSports Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer. Navy is just 1-7 (.125) against the conference all-time, but has played just five of the schools currently in the league. Navy hasn t defeated a team currently in a BCS Conference since Nov. 26, 1996, a win over Pittsburgh. The Mids have lost 20 straight games against BCS teams since that win over the Panthers. Navy vs. Missouri - Jan. 5, 1981 Missouri topped the Mids, 88-67, at the Hearnes Center in Columbia, Mo., in the teams first meeting. The Tigers methodically outscored the Midshipmen, leading at the break and pulled away slowly in the second half. Ricky Frazier led Missouri with 19 points and Jon Sundvold, who is doing the color commentary for the television broadcast of the game on Saturday, scored 16 points with seven assists and six rebounds. Freshman Rob Romaine tallied 24 points with four assists and Dave Brooks added 18 points for the Midshipmen. Navy vs. Missouri - March 17, 1994 More was on the line in the teams second meeting as the Tigers and Midshipmen met in the first round of the 1994 NCAA Tournament. The Midshipmen were the 16th seed in the West Region, battling fifth-ranked and top-seeded Missouri. Navy bolted out to a 9-4 lead five minutes into the contest and still led with five minutes to play in the first half before trailing at the halftime break. The Midshipmen trailed just with 9:25 to play, but saw Missouri outscore the Mids, 33-14, the rest of the way for the 23-point win. Navy s Ed DeChellis served as the head coach at Penn State from , where he was assisted by Dan Earl, Kurt Kanaskie and D.J. Black, all of whom are at Navy now. He was also assisted by Ernie Nestor, who is now an assistant coach at Missouri, during the season in Happy Valley. The group led the Nittany Lions to the 2011 NCAA Tournament second round. Missouri senior guard Kim English hails from Baltimore, Md., just 20 miles from Annapolis. He attended Randallstown High School, before playing a prep year at Notre Dame Prep. Navy Against Ranked Teams Missouri is the highest-ranked team that Navy will have faced since battling fourth-ranked Wake Forest on Dec. 29, 2000 (a loss). DeChellis is the 19th head basketball coach in the 105-year history of Navy basketball. DeChellis, who is 52, led Penn State to a record and a fourth place finish (9-9) in the Big Ten in , including the Nittany Lions first appearance in the Big Ten Championship Game and the school's first trip to the NCAA Tournament since DeChellis was the 2009 Big Ten Coach of the Year, just the second Penn State basketball coach to ever earn coach-of-the-year honors, as he guided a Nittany Lion team that started three sophomores to a school-record 27 wins and the program's first-ever national tournament title in winning the 2009 NIT. Along the way Penn State tied a program record for regular season wins (21), posted its second-most Big Ten Conference wins (10) and second-best finish (4th) ever, recorded just the 10th 20-win season in program history and set a record for home wins (17). His coaching performance in had many of his Big Ten colleagues and members of the media pointing to him as the conference's coachof-the-year. Primed for a run to the post-season in his fifth year at the helm, DeChellis saw his leading scorer, rebounder and preseason All-Big Ten first-team pick Geary Claxton go down with a torn ACL 16 games into the season. Second leading scorer and rebounder Jamelle Cornley also suffered a knee injury that limited him for much of the season and caused him to miss six games, including the last three. All DeChellis did was lead a team that started four freshmen and five newcomers to its most Big Ten wins and best Big Ten finish since Along the way his young Lions knocked off No. 7 Michigan State and No. 17 Indiana while winning five straight home games to end the campaign. The Nittany Lions reached the NIT in 2006, DeChellis' third year at the helm. Despite playing the youngest (12 underclassmen and one senior) and smallest line-up (just one player over 6-6 playing more than four minutes per game in league play) in the Big Ten, DeChellis led Penn State to its most overall wins (15), most non-conference wins (eight), most Big Ten wins (six), first Big Ten Tournament win and first post-season appearance (NIT) in five seasons. DeChellis' recruiting and coaching helped Penn State claim its first ever Big Ten Freshman-of-the-Year (Jamelle Cornley, 2006) and three straight members of the Big Ten All-Freshman Team (Marlon Smith, 2004; Geary Claxton, 2005; Jamelle Cornley, 2006). The Lions had none before his arrival. He also set about changing and revitalizing the program's culture - stressing family, a team-first attitude and a commitment to excellence without shortcuts that his players embraced and took ownership of. DeChellis wrapped up the year by being named the 2006 National Coaches Vs. Cancer Man-of-the-Year for his contributions in raising funds and awareness in the fight against cancer. DeChellis was presented the award by ESPN's Jay Bilas before a large gathering of his peers at the Laurel Valley Golf Club in western Pennsylvania. Penn State was coming off two consecutive seven-win seasons when DeChellis was named the 11th head coach in program history in April of Energizing the fans and players immediately, he helped guide Penn State to nine wins in his first season, better than each of the prior two seasons, with fewer players on scholarship than the previous year. In 1986, DeChellis returned to Penn State and began a very successful 10-year run as an assistant coach for nine years under Bruce Parkhill, a mentor to whom he credits his development as a coach, and one season under Jerry Dunn. DeChellis helped guide Penn State to four straight post-season appearances from 1989 through DeChellis returned to Penn State as the head coach after a very successful seven-year run as the head coach at East Tennessee State University. At ETSU he turned a last place Buccaneer team into a three-time conference division winner, a conference tournament champion and took ETSU to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in a decade. Showcasing the ability to build a program from the foundation up, DeChellis had his most successful seasons in his last three years. During that span, his ETSU teams went and won three straight Southern Conference North Division titles. DeChellis has seen every senior that has played for him over his 15 years as a head coach graduate, is a 1982 graduate of Penn State. What Others Are Saying About DeChellis It's a big loss for the Big Ten and a big gain for Navy. He has done a phenomenal job at Penn State, which can be a difficult place to recruit. He will bring incredible expertise, class, charisma and integrity. He is the perfect fit for the Naval Academy. -- Tom Izzo, head men's basketball coach at Michigan State It's a home run hire by Navy. He's at the perfect age and experience level as a head coach to understand the challenges that the Naval Academy presents yet deal with them in a very mature way. He will put a great product on the floor and there is no doubt that Navy will contend for the Patriot League Championship. He's an outstanding X's and O's coach and he will run great offensive sets, which is what you have to do at the Naval Academy. I couldn't be happier with this decision. -- Doug Wojcik, head men's basketball coach at Tulsa, former assistant at Navy and point guard on Navy's 1986 Elite Eight basketball team Ed is one of the hardest working guys in the profession. He's done a heck of a job at Penn State and he's a heck of a coach. He's an old school coach like me. He likes to teach and develop players and he isn't one of those coaches that beats on his chest and says look at me. He's a very good coach and a very good teacher. He's a great addition to what's going on there at the Naval Academy and I think he will flourish in that role. -- Bo Ryan, head men's basketball coach at Wisconsin I'm very happy for Ed and his family. He has been a good friend for the last 10 years. Selfishly, I'm glad that he's no longer in our conference because our teams didn't have a whole lot of success against him. His teams have freedom on the offensive end and they are strong rebounders. I know that he'll do a tremendous job in Annapolis. -- Bill Carmody, head men's basketball coach at Northwestern What a great hire. Ed DeChellis is a tremendous basketball coach and an even better person. He's the perfect fit for the Naval Academy and all the school stands for. They couldn't have hired a better person. -- Dan Dakich, ESPN Color Commentator for Big Ten games, former head coach at Bowling Green and assistant at Indiana I've known Ed DeChellis for over 20 years. I coached against him in the Southern Conference and in the Big Ten. I have phenomenal respect for his ability to build a program and recruit. From a technical aspect, he's spectacular. Defensively, he's very good with changing defenses. He runs great sets and gets shots for his players. He's been successful everywhere he's been and I know he will be very successful at Navy. -- Iowa Head Coach Fran McCaffrey
