2 Preview - A Preseason Conversation with Coach Dan Earl what s going on our drills are smoother and transition as we know get ready to play games ON LAST SEASON: It was good to get a year under our belt for our coaching staff and certainly for our players to get used to a different style of play and terminology. It takes a little while to implement something new and get a foundation. I d like to think we were playing our best basketball late in the season and the guys got better as they got used to things. All in all, it was good. We didn t win as many games as I would like, but we were playing better later on after taking some heavily on the chin early in the year. It s been smoother the players know the terminology. It takes time and it s a process, we want it to go much faster, but it s been enjoyable and we re getting better. ON PRESEASON Going back into summer, we were able to have guys in summer school which is great not only academically, but you also get guys on the floor and in the weight room and strength and conditioning and we did a really good job of improving our bodies. You move in the fall and the guys were working really hard and you get some in the new season. ON THE SCORING PRODUCTION AND ROLES We have some guys who can put the ball in the basket. We have the leading scorer in the Southern Conference coming back in Q.J. Peterson and Julian Eleby who had a god year last year scoring wise and Trey Chapman can put the ball in the basket. But it s as much everything else and they affect the game. It s been a much smoother can pass the ball as well. Some of our goals are to improve our assist turnover ratio. But as much as it is on the floor, it s still the leadership which is something we re working on but those guys have made tremendous strides. You see a different pop, a different energy, a different communication level from our three seniors and that will determine how well we come along with the younger guys. QJ Peterson 2

3 Trey Chapman ON AREAS THAT NEED IMPROVEMENT Getting to the line and getting fouled and will be a big thing and rebounding margin is a big objective - grabbing the defensive rebounds will be a key for us and then crashing the glass as well. We have to value the basketball. You want to get shots and I m all about taking a bunch of shots, but the way you do that is taking care of the ball and limiting your turnovers and we have made improvement in our ball movement and shot selection and those types of things. The ball was moving better in our first 15 practices and I was excited about that. ON THE TEAM DEPTH AND NEWCOM- ERS We have some veterans coming back that got some playing time. Adrian Rich certainly played some valuable minutes for us. He has certainly played a bigger role and Austin Vereen played key minutes and got better as the season went along. In the front court, Fred Iruafemi shook off some injuries early in the year and got better and started to affect the game and for some guys it s scoring but for others it s blocking shots, getting rebounds and being a defensive presence. Armani Branch has been doing some good things in practice and we are excited about that as well. We re excited about our freshman class. We have six new guys that we re bringing in all wonderful kids with high character that are doing well in the classroom and very coachable. They have been wonderful in soaking up all the stuff we ve been trying to teach them and trying to learn which is a big part of this whole thing. Keith Smith is a point guard, very fast, handles the ball and sees the floor very well. We re still working on him making shots at a high rate, but he can shoot the ball as well. I think he ll be able to race the ball up the floor and make good decisions which are the key. Garrett Gilkeson is a bigger guard from West Virginia and can make shots and passes extremely well. Chuchu Enechionya is a 6-6 wing forward who knows the game, can rebound the ball, and make multiple decisions. Will Miller is an inside player who knows when to slip a screen and get to the basket. He can pass the score the ball around the block as well as step out. Tyler Creammer has been injured a little bit in the fall and we hadn t been able to get him on the court early. But he is a big body who runs the floor well and will bang with guys and also step out from fifteen feet. Marcus Larsson is a guard who can make shots and plays hard every time out. ABOUT THE SOCON It s a very good league. I knew the history and tradition but until you get into it, you really don t know how good some of these teams are. I have a ton of respect for the coaches and they do a wonderful job. I could go down the list. I was very impressed with the different styles of play with the talent level in the conference. Overall, it s a great conference. ABOUT THE SCHEDULE We re going to test ourselves in the non-conference part of the schedule, again. Richmond, West Virginia, Dayton, and Virginia Tech and it will be challenging and we ll have to get after it. We have some return games and people coming especially with some like opponents and then we will get into league play where it will be tough every night. We ll challenge ourselves and we re excited about the year ahead. Julian Eleby 3

4 Head Coach Dan Earl Now in his second year, Dan Earl is making his mark on VMI basketball after transitioning to a new style of play in his debut season. The Keydet players took hold of the new system that emphasized defense and shot selection as its core components, and finished on a strong note by winning three of their last four home games. Now with a year in the system, the VMI basketball team will enter with a firm foundation of the Earl system and will work to convert that into more wins and an upward push in the SoCon standings. Dan Earl was named head VMI basketball coach on April 12, Earl came to VMI from the United States Naval Academy where he was Associate Head Coach since the season. His duties included serving as recruiting director, scheduling, scouting of opponents, game preparation and player development. While at Navy, Earl used his experience as a dynamic recruiter to draw several talented student-athletes to Annapolis that were instrumental in the Midshipmen doubling conference wins in each of the first four seasons under head coach Ed DeChellis. Navy posted eight Patriot League wins in and defeated rival Army three times which included a conference tournament victory over the Cadets. Earl directed the Navy offensive sets and played a vital role in increasing scoring output of key offensive players. On the defensive side, Navy ranked 57th in the country in scoring defense in and had the second lowest turnover total 4

5 in school history. Earl became the 28th head coach in VMI program history that dates back to Earl starred on the basketball court at Penn State where he helped the Nittany Lions to one of the most prolific winning periods in the mid-90 s before spending six years from on the staff at Penn State as an assistant coach. While coaching at his alma mater, Earl helped the Nittany Lions to a NCAA Tournament berth in 2011 the program s first in 10 years - and the 2009 NIT Championship squad that posted wins over national powers Florida, Notre Dame, and Baylor. The 2009 Penn State team won a school record 27 games and the program also attained an NIT berth in As an assistant coach at Penn State, Earl played a key role in recruiting outstanding talent that fueled the program s success as he served as lead recruiter on all-big 10 guard Tim Frazier. Earl also helped develop All-Big 10 selection Talor Battle who became the first player in Big 10 history to eclipse 2,000 points, 500 rebounds, and 500 assists. As a starting point guard under head coach Bruce Parkhill and then assistant coach Ed DeChellis, Earl battled injuries throughout his career but finished six years later with 1,256 points (15th all-time at the time), 574 assists (no. 2 all time), 194 career three-pointers (7th all-time) and point attempts (7th all-time). He totaled two of the top season school marks in assists. During his college playing career, Earl helped Penn State to perhaps the best five-year stretch in school history as the Nittany Lions posted a record of that including a home mark. He served as team captain three times and helped Penn State to the 1995 NIT and a 1996 NCAA Tournament appearance from a squad that went 21-7 and earned a top 10 national ranking. Earl earned All-Big Ten honors twice and was a two-time Academic All-American. Earl received a Bachelor of Science degree in marketing from Penn State in December, 1997 and earned a master s degree in business logistics at Penn State in Following graduation, Earl played professionally in Germany, Poland, Portugal, and also played stateside in the Continental Basketball Association and NBA s Development League with the Roanoke (Va.) Dazzle in Earl participated in two New Jersey Nets NBA pre-seasons in and Earl also co-owned and operated Next Level Basketball Camps from which conducted camps and clinics in New Jersey. Dan s younger brother, Brian, started for Princeton from and helped the Tigers to 95 wins the most of any player in school history. Brian currently serves as an assistant coach at Princeton. Dan and his wife, Sheila, were married in the summer of 2008 and have two daughters, Mila and Alyssa. 5

6 6 Chris Kreider ASSISTANT COACH SECOND SEASON Lebanon Valley 03 Chris Kreider enters his second season as a VMI basketball assistant coach. He brought ten years of college basketball experience to Lexington including stops at three Division I schools. He comes to VMI from George Mason where he served as an assistant from where he was instrumental in signing one of the top recruiting classes in the Atlantic 10 in 2014 and also helped recruit a class in 2011 that was ranked 10th among mid-major institutions. Kreider also has Southern Conference coaching experience and served for two years ( ) as an assistant when the Eagles were members of the league. He was also at Georgia Tech for two seasons working as a volunteer assistant coach in and men s basketball administrative coordinator in He began his coaching career in 2006 as a volunteer assistant men s basketball coach in 2006 at Division II University of South Carolina-Aiken in the Peach Belt Conference. Kreider began his coaching career at the University of Great Falls in Montana where he served one year as assistant coach in before coaching high school basketball at St. Francis in Alpharetta, Ga. for three years. Kreider played college basketball at three colleges starting at Mansfield State for one season before transferring to Grove City (Pa.) College where in his junior season he led the Wolverines in scoring (12.3 ppg) and steals (52). Kreider finished his career at Lebanon Valley where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish in VMI BASKETBALL FACT BOOK Coaching Staff Steve Lepore ASSISTANT COACH SECOND SEASON Wake Forest 03 Steve Lepore is now in his second season as an assistant coach with the Keydets. Lepore came to VMI from Hargrave (Va.) Military Academy where he served as assistant basketball coach for the past two seasons and also was head strength and conditioning coach. While Lepore was at Hargrave, the post-graduate squad posted a record and attained third and fifth national rankings. Lepore helped develop several Hargrave players who landed at power conferences such as the ACC, Big Ten, and SEC. Lepore s coaching resume also includes an extended run as an assistant coach at his alma mater St. Edward High School in Lakewood, Ohio where he worked with the freshman team during , then after a year playing professionally came back as a varsity assistant coach from 2006 through Lepore played collegiately at Wake Forest in and where he received his B.A. in Communications with a minor in International Studies. Lepore began his college career at Northwestern and played two years in 1999 and 2000 before transferring. After graduation, Lepore had stints in professional basketball both overseas and in the U.S. He was a member of USA Basketball Junior World Championship Team as a shooting guard in 1998 and Lepore also worked in private business as a regional marketing and custom business manager for both Spalding and Russell Athletic. Vince Thibodeau DIRECTOR OF BASKETBALL OPERATIONS SECOND SEASON Jason Slay ASSISTANT COACH SECOND SEASON West Virginia State 08 Jason Slay is now in his second season as an assistant coach with the Keydets. He came to Lexington with SoCon experience from conference rival East Tennessee State University where he spent last season. Slay also served as an assistant coach at Tennessee State University in and was the Director of Basketball Operations at Georgia Southern when it was in the SoCon in Prior to working in the college ranks, Slay was the top assistant coach at Hargrave Military Academy where he coached 10 players that signed national letters of intent to Division I programs. He also served as the team s director of individual development and summer training and the Tigers finished with a 38-8 record and made the National Prep Showcase Elite 8 in Slay also coached four years ( ) at his alma mater of West Virginia State serving as associate head coach and recruiting coordinator and was a part of two West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships. He received his undergraduate degree in General Education in As a college player at West Virginia State, Slay was a four-time captain and two-year starter and helped guide his team to the NCAA Division II Sweet 16 in 2004, 2006, and 2007.) He recived a degree in General Education in Slay s family has deep basketball ties as older brother Tamar played at Marshall and in the NBA for the New Jersey Nets after being drafted in the second round. His cousin, Ron, also played for Tennessee and made a trip to the Sweet 16 as a freshman in Vince Thibodeau was named VMI s basketball s first Director of Basketball Operations in Fall, 2015 and is now in his second season with the program. Thibodeau comes to VMI after serving as Assistant Coach, Strength and Conditioning at University of Michigan Dearborn during the Season. While there, he coached one player (Jason Penn) who was selected to all-newcomer team in the WHAC. Thibodeau previous served as a Graduate Assistant at George Mason University in and a manager at his alma mater of Western Michigan University. He holds a Master s of Science, Sport and Recreational Studies with a concentration in Sport Management from George Mason University in 2015 with Focus on Motivation and Leadership. He graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelors of Business Administration from Western Michigan in He also attended the University of Virginia from and while there served as Assistant Varsity Basketball Coach at Tandem Friends School in Charlottesville, VA. Thibodeau was a five-sport varsity athlete at Randolph-Macon Academy in Front Royal, Virginia where he named all-state as a punter and basketball player his senior year. After high school, he soloed an airplane (33 flying hours) and worked for multiple years as a Parts and Service Associate at Fairfax Toyota.

Note that former parking locations may not be valid due to ongoing construction on Post. All others are requested to call this office far enough in advance so the tickets can be mailed. Passes may also be left at will call at the Cameron Hall ticket office. PRESS ROW: All media, both radio networks, and the statistical crew are situated on the east side of the court. Wireless internet access is available for media members on press row.
