3 PRESEASON EXPECTATIONS We had a very solid spring. I felt really good about the way we played in the spring and we got a lot of people quality time, in particular getting the rising sophomores more game-playing experience. There were five or six of them that saw significant minutes during the fall but the ones that didn t saw a lot of playing time during the spring and I feel real good coming off the spring. Our expectations for the preseason are still that we are very young, but at the same time we are very talented. We are going to mold that youth and really try and develop some leaders. ON THE CHALLENGE OF PUTTING A TEAM WITH NO SENIORS ON THE FIELD It is a very unique year. We have four girls (Kori Hoelscher, Summer Ragsdale, Lauren Stewart and Allison Whitworth) that are in their fourth year of college and are senior-age but they are red-shirt juniors. It is just an ironic class in that each one of them red-shirted at different points in their careers. Having no seniors on the team is a really big challenge. I think the coaches will really have to try and mold some leaders and be good leadership examples for those girls as they take on the added roles of guiding the team. The most experienced player from a minutes standpoint is junior Jenn Johnson and she has only been in college for two years. ON LOSING RONDA BROOKS AND HOW SHE WILL BE REPLACED You don t replace a Ronda Brooks (2 G, 1 A in ). She was the best defender in the league, an All- American and a class-act on and off the field. What we really have to do is hope that the several players that were around her are now a year older and will come together to fill that void. It will be very significant that we get Lauren Stewart back. Lauren was injured in an exhibition game 2007 Auburn Soccer 2007 SEASON PREVIEW - QUOTING COACH KAREN HOPPA Jenn Johnson last year and missed the entire season, so her coming back will hopefully fill Ronda s gap specifically. I think having Jenn Johnson (0 G, 3 A) with another year of experience, as well as Lizzie Hamersly (2 G, 1 A) and Kasey Warren (1 G, 1 A) having a year under their belts will help. Of course, having Allison Whitworth in goal with a year of starting behind her all of those players together will fill the gap that Ronda leaves. ON THE GOALKEEPERS Allison Whitworth is coming off of a great season (102 saves, 1.09 GAA) and having a year of experience will really help her coming into the 2007 campaign. She won t have those rookie nerves and make the rookie mistakes. I think Allison will be significantly challenged for her position by Skylar Brinegar, who comes from the GSA Club Team, which is a team we have had a lot of success pulling players from. Allison Whitworth Skylar has played in the Olympic Development Program and she is a super athlete and I think she will do a great job of challenging Allison. ON THE RETURNING OFFENSIVE FIREPOWER Obviously we lost Kristin Stewart (5 G, 3 A) who was one of our leading scorers, and like losing Ronda, with all the youngsters having another year of experience under their belt will help fill that void. Caitlin King (5 G, 5 A, 3 GWG) got better every game as the season went on, which will help a ton. Stephanie Fransoso (0 G, 1 A), when she got healthy, started getting significant minutes along with Rebecca Howell (2 G, 1 A). What s really going to help our offense a ton is getting a healthy Kara Kasten (3 G, 3 A) back. She played at the end of the year after suffering a stress fracture and she wasn t 100 percent. Kara is really going to have to take a lot of responsibility and lead that group because we will be adding three freshman forwards. 21

4 2007 SEASON PREVIEW - QUOTING COACH KAREN HOPPA ON THE MIDFIELD The midfield was really young for us in with the exception of Jenny Zarzour (3 G, 6 A), who also graduated, so that will be another void we have to fill. Jenny was the leader in that group, but we have several players coming back that should make an impact there. Gabi Rivera (3 G, 1 A) is coming back after we lost her in the regular season match with Tennessee. We really took a hit when she went down. Between Gabi, Chelsea Yauch (0 G, 0 A) and Jenni Prescott (3 G, 0 A), those three as sophomores have a lot of experience. Summer Ragsdale (0 G, 0 A) is one of our older players in the midfield as well as Kori Hoelsher (1 G, 0 A), who moved up from the backline last year into the Gabi Rivera midfield. They bring a lot of experience with them as well as some talented freshmen that will challenge them. Carolyn Cohen (0 G, 0 A) is another player who didn t see a lot of time during the season but was able to play a lot during the spring, which will be a big plus for us. Jaime Wheeler is can play in the back or the midfield. We are not sure where she is going to fit in best but she could add another dimension to our midfield as well. ON KEEPING THE COACHING STAFF TOGETHER I have a tremendous staff. Both of my assistants (Becky Fletcher and Keidane McAlpine) have headcoaching experience and with the three of us having been together for a full year I think will really help our team. With no seniors it is really important that the coaching staff is united as a leadership group and we need to help create team chemistry. Keidane will again focus his efforts on our offense and Becky will focus her efforts on our defense and they both do a tremendous job on their side of the ball. I think that is really going to help us this year. ON THE TRADITION AUBURN HAS BUILT UNDER KAREN HOPPA S LEADERSHIP Last year we regained our SEC West trophy and that was real important to us. Having won it four years in a row and then losing it in 2005, our goal was to get it back in and we accomplished that goal. For us, winning the West is certainly important but our goal is to be one of the top teams in the SEC and we were not pleased with where we finished in the SEC overall last year (sixth). Obviously losing in the first round of the SEC Tournament did not sit well with us. We have a good tradition of winning, but we want to get better and that is probably the biggest goal for this program. We want to be better than we were last year. We want to be one of the top teams in the league year-in-and-year-out, be competitive in the NCAA Tournament and be a top-25 team. The tradition is nice but we want to be better than we were in the past. ON THE 2007 SCHEDULE Within the SEC, every game is a challenge. In the non-conference we always try to put together a good balance. We want to play some top-25 teams and have a strong enough schedule that if we win enough we would qualify for an at-large bid. To do that we balance games that we can gain experience from and games where we can have success. Obviously the highlight of the schedule is going to Hawai i, and that is something we have been planning for a long time. It is a reward for the student-athletes to travel somewhere unique and we try and do that every few years. We will play some great competition there. Playing the University of Hawai i at home is going to be a challenge and Kansas, a perennial top-25 team is one of the best teams in the Big XII. I think another highlight is playing at Florida State. Keidane put together our schedule and he got a home-and-home with Florida State, so they will play here in That will be another great series for us and a SEC-level game that will get us prepared. The conference schedule shifts to more away games this year because we are at Alabama. Last year we flip-flopped who we played Friday-Sunday, so now for the first time we are playing some teams home-oraway on a Friday night for the first time. At Ole Miss on a Friday night should be a tremendous atmosphere that is a big West rivalry for us. We play at Florida on a Friday night too, and hopefully that will help us with the heat a little bit. It is going to be a challenging schedule, even more so for a young team with no seniors. 22
