5 2 MONTA S STORY- FROM HIGH SCHOOL TO THE NBA Monta Ellis was born in Jackson, MS on October 26, He went to Lanier High School and was named to the 2005 McDonald s All-American Team. Monta was the first player in the State of Mississippi to earn the honor of All-American four times. That was a huge accomplishment! He was also named one of 10 finalists for the James A. Naismith Award, named after the man who invented the game of basketball. The Naismith Award is awarded annually to the nation s top high school player. Not many high school players are able to make it to the professional level. There can only be 400 players in the NBA out of the millions who want to play at the highest level. Monta is the first American high school player drafted by the Golden State Warriors. He was also one of the 10 high school players selected in the 2005 NBA Daft. Many people did not know what to expect from Monta as a rookie. When all of his teammates saw him practice for the first time, they noticed that he could shoot and handle the basketball very well. He also has the quickness and speed to maneuver around the court as a guard. Monta slowly began to establish himself with the Warriors and the NBA. He is known around the NBA as a very humble and professional person. Ellis stands out because he s so quick and explosive on the court. He brings high energy and plenty of athleticism. Anytime Monta is asked about his experience in the NBA, he always says that he is happy to be playing the game he loves and that he is always learning new things. Monta knows that you can never stop learning and he understands that getting a good education is very important. Monta is no longer a rookie, and looks forward to helping his team win more games this season. Monta s brother Antwain is also a star high school basketball player. In his spare time, he enjoys playing video games and listening to music on his IPOD. One day Monta plans to build a neighborhood community center in Jackson, MS. He wants to help create a safe and educational environment for kids in his community. He understands that knowledge is power and the more you know, the more you grow!

11 8 MIKE DUNLEAVY: THE X-FACTOR! Michael Joseph Dunleavy, Jr. was born on September 15, 1980 in Lake Oswego, Oregon. He went to Jesuit High School and then to Duke University in North Carolina. In college, Mike helped lead Duke to win the 2001 NCAA Championship as a sophomore. He was the only player in the ACC ranked in the top-10 in seven different statistical categories. The categories included: scoring, rebounding, steals, field goal percentage, 3-point field goal percentage, defensive rebounds, and 3-point field goals made per game. After three years of playing college basketball, Mike decided to enter his name in the NBA draft. Mike was selected by the Golden State Warriors in the first round as the 3rd overall pick in the 2002 NBA Draft. Since Dunleavy s arrival to the Warriors as a forward, he has blossomed into one of the most versatile players in the NBA. Not only can Mike attack the basket, he has one of the best 3-point shots. He s often known as the X-factor of the team because he can do it all and gives the extra spark that the team needs. Because of Mike s skills, he was selected to be a member of the sophomore team in the 2004 Got Milk Rookie Challenge All-Star game. Even though Mike left college early, he vowed that he would go back to school to finish earning his college degree. His determination and dedication paid off. Each summer, starting with his rookie year in the NBA, Mike would take classes to finish school. During the summer of 2005, Mike graduated from Duke University with a degree in history. Mike tells kids and adults everywhere he goes to never give up on their education. Growing up, he played baseball, football, croquet, and ping pong. He also had to find shoes since he wears a size 14. That s a big shoe size! When Mike isn t playing sports, he enjoys giving back to the community. Mike is the son of Mike Dunleavy, Sr., a former NBA player and the current L.A. Clippers Head Coach. He has two younger brothers named Baker and James.
