Next Up in Crusader Basketball: What have Georgi Donchetz and Dani Franklin meant to Valparaiso women s basketball over the last four years? In a word everything. Two seniors who will, each in their own way, leave behind lasting legacies will take the floor for the final time on Saturday afternoon as Valpo hosts MVC regular season champion Drake. Donchetz and Franklin will be honored in a pregame ceremony that will begin at 2:43 p.m. and will address the audience along with head coach Tracey Dorow following the game. Last Time Out: The Crusaders couldn t overcome a 24-9 hole after one quarter and eventually fell to UNI on Thursday night at the ARC. Valpo was led in both scoring and rebounding by Bryce Blood as the freshman racked up 11 points and pulled down eight boards. Grace Hales hit double figures for the second straight game, finishing with 10 points. UNI shot 40 percent for the game, while the Crusaders were held to 31 percent shooting. Following the Crusaders: Saturday s game will air on The Valley on ESPN3 with Brian Jennings (play-by-play) and Renee Turpa (color commentary) on the call. Ben Ariano will provide the radio description on WVUR, 95.1 FM. Live stats will also be available. Head Coach Tracey Dorow: Tracey Dorow was named head coach of the Valparaiso women s basketball program in April of The season is her sixth in charge of Valpo s program. Dorow has led the Crusaders to a Horizon League tournament victory in four of her first five seasons at the helm. During the , and seasons, Valpo boasted three all-freshman team members, a Freshman of the Year, a Sixth Player of the Year, an all-league second-team honoree and an all-defensive team member. The Crusaders have enjoyed a significant uptick in all-league recognition under Dorow s watch, as they had three total league honors in the five seasons before that three-year span. Dorow arrived at Valpo after spending 14 seasons as the head coach at Ferris State University, guiding the Bulldogs to four NCAA Division II Tournament appearances, two Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division championships, and four 20-win seasons. VALPO Women s Basketball

2 Series Notes: Playing without one starter due to injury and three other players due to illness, Valpo fell in the conference opener for both teams on Dec. 29 in Des Moines. Dani Franklin led the Crusaders in scoring by turning in nine points, while Marlee Profitt paced the squad in rebounds with six. Addison Stoller chipped in a season-high eight points off the bench for the Crusaders, who were held to 30.2 percent shooting. The last time Valpo hosted Drake was a noteworthy clash, as the Crusaders initially prevailed on Nov. 24, 1995, but the game was later ruled a forfeit in Drake s favor due to Valpo s use of an ineligible player. Drake holds a 3-0 record in the all-time series. Senior Day Success: Last year, Valpo sent out its seniors with a win over UIC in the regular season finale. Valpo is 3-2 on Senior Day in Tracey Dorow s time as head coach. The Georgi Donchetz File: The numbers don t do justice to what this two-year captain and four-year letter winner has meant to her team. So instead of stats, we ll use words those of head coach Tracey Dorow to attempt to provide insight on Donchetz s lasting impact. Nov. 14, 2017: Georgi is the heart and soul of our Valpo women s basketball program. She cares so deeply about her teammates and what they can accomplish. Our young players feed off her enthusiasm. Georgi is always willing to step into whatever role necessary. She knows all of the positions because her basketball IQ is super high. She knows why we re doing what we re doing. She bleeds Brown and Gold. She s all about Valpo; she s social with a purpose. Every time she faces an obstacle, she rises to the top. Dec. 19, 2016: She s grown in so many areas of her life. She wants to set an example for the rest of the players. She s never hoped to be a superstar, but she s always hoped to help us get to the top. Nov. 18, 2015: I will always admire the passion that Georgi has for people more than anything. She has the same passion for the game, but she also sees that the game is a means to an end. She uses the game to do things that she otherwise might not have the platform to do, like the Crusaders Fight Cancer initiative. Franklin s Farewell: After Saturday, the next time Valpo plays a home game it will do so without Dani Franklin on the court. That will mark first the time since Feb. 21, 2015 that Franklin hasn t been active for a Valpo game at the ARC. She s played in every home game in her career except that one, a loss to Youngstown State. In fact, that was the last time Franklin missed any game, home or road, as the next contest started a streak of 95 consecutive games played that remains intact today. Blood s Big Day: Bryce Blood became the first Valpo player other than Dani Franklin to lead the Crusaders in both scoring and rebounding when she racked up 11 points and pulled down eight boards on Thursday against UNI. Blood led the team in scoring for the first time in her collegiate career and paced the squad in rebounding for the fourth time this season and the first time since Jan. 12, when she pulled down 10 boards against Loyola. Tournament Talk: Drake has nailed down the Missouri Valley Conference regular season title and will be the No. 1 seed and favorite for next week s conference tournament in Moline, Ill. The Crusaders hope to meet the Bulldogs again next week, as the winner of a first-round game between Valpo and either Loyola or Bradley will play Drake in the second round of the tournament. The Crusaders open Hoops in the Heartland on Thursday, March 8 at 4 p.m. CT with Drake awaiting the winner of Valpo s first-round game on Friday, March 9 at noon. Valpo can nail down the No. 8 seed for the conference tournament with either a win or a Loyola loss to UNI on Saturday. The Crusaders will only slip to ninth if they lose and Loyola beats UNI. The Ramblers could move up to seventh, but it would take a Loyola win over UNI, a Bradley loss to Illinois State and Loyola to take the MVC strength of victory tiebreaker. That specific scenario is the only way Valpo would face Bradley instead of Loyola in the opening round. Tiebreaker Procedures: In the event of a tie in the conference standings, head-to-head will serve as the first tiebreaker. If there is still a tie, power rating using MVC games will be implemented, using the point system outlined below. Road Win Home Win 1st place team 20 pts. 19 pts. 2nd rd th th th th 8 7 8th 6 5 9th th 2 1 Crusaders Can Score: Valpo has taken a significant offensive leap this season as compared to recent years. With one game to go in the regular season, the Crusaders are averaging 66.5 points per game, over five points per game better than a year ago. If Valpo can keep its scoring average above 66.3, this will mark the team s highest scoring average since the campaign, when Valpo finished at Here s a year-by-year look at how this year s scoring average compares to recent seasons.

3 Year Ppg Rewriting the Record Book: As Dani Franklin gets set to play in her final home game in a Valpo uniform on Saturday, it s fitting to recognize how many places her name will appear in the Crusader program record book when her prolific four-year career is said and done. Franklin will finish in the Top 10 in program history in at least 11 different categories games played, total points, points per game, field goals made, field goals attempted, free throws made, 3-point field goals made, 3-point field goals attempted, rebounds, free-throw percentage and 3-point percentage. She has a strong chance to reach the Top 10 in two others free throws attempted and rebounds per game. Here s a look at where Franklin ranks in program history in various statistical categories entering Saturday. Hamlet Enters Top 20: Junior Meredith Hamlet has made her way onto the program s all-time scoring list. She currently ranks 19th in program history with 932 career points. Aimee Litka ( ) is 18th at 944. In addition, Hamlet has made 149 career 3-pointers, and moved ahead of Betsy Adams ( ) for eighth in program history last week at Indiana State. We Are Young: Although Valpo s top two scorers are senior Dani Franklin and junior Meredith Hamlet, this is still largely a youthful Crusader squad. Eight of Valpo s top 10 scorers are freshmen or sophomores and nine of the team s top 10 scorers are expected to be back next season. Nicole Konieczny, who ranks 16th nationally in free-throw percentage among true freshmen at 78.8, and Bryce Blood are fourth and fifth on the team in scoring, respectively. Freshmen contributing right away has been a theme for the Crusaders, who have two freshmen in their top five in scoring for the fourth straight season. Eye on the Future: A team that is returning nine of its top 10 scorers will also add two talented freshmen to the mix next year. Ilysse Pitts drained three 3s in the second half on Monday night, helping Montini to a win over Bolingbrook in the IHSA

4 Class 4A Lewis Supersectional. Valpo head coach Tracey Dorow was in attendance. Pitts is expected to be a force on the defensive end when she joins the Crusaders. Shay Frederick, a three-star recruit according to ESPN, started her state tournament in Wisconsin this week. Frederick shattered the Hortonville career scoring record among both boys and girls earlier this season. Maya Makes Progress: In addition to accounting for two of the most noteworthy achievements by any Crusader this season making SportsCenter s Top 10 with a buzzer-beater to tie a game against Southern Illinois on Feb. 16 and shattering a program record with 16 assists against IU Northwest on Dec. 15, Maya Meredith has made many other key contributions for the Crusaders this season.
