3 BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Edward M. Moss Jr. was born to Edward M. Moss Sr. and Myrtle E. Linker Moss on 8 May 1948 in Syracuse, New York. He had two sisters, Linda S. Moss Rusthoven and Nancy E. Moss-Downey. The children grew up on Long Island, New York. The family moved to Indiana in 1965 when Ed Moss Sr. was offered a job as the Vice President of Engineering at P.R. Mallory, which later became Duracell Battery. Ed Moss Jr. graduated from Arlington High School in Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and was deployed to Vietnam. One of his jobs was to take aerial photographs of enemy movements from the aircraft. This is what initially sparked his interest in photography. After four years in the Air Force and an honorable discharge, Moss lived and worked in Germany for about nine months. On his return to the United States he began to build his photography business, specifically in sports photography. In the 1970s, Moss became the team photographer for the Indianapolis Racers Hockey team, several notable IndyCar drivers, and the ABA Pacers. For a wider range of sports connections, he worked closely with the Cincinnati Reds and merged his photography business with former Reds player, Sonny Ruberto, in On 7 December 1977, while working on a book about the history of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway with Paul Page, the two were in a helicopter taking aerial shots of the IMS when the helicopter experienced mechanical problems and crashed on the football field of Speedway High School. Moss suffered five broken vertebrae and was forced to give up photography for two years due to surgeries, metal rods in his spine, and a body cast. Remarkably, he never lost his ability to walk and eventually recovered. When Moss returned to work, he diversified his work and became successful in commercial, portrait, and architectural photography. His photographs were published in Sports Illustrated, Playboy, Architectural Digest, Indianapolis Monthly, Indianapolis Woman, Indianapolis Business Journal, and in some books. A photo of him taking photographs at the 1987 Pan American Games is in the book, The Games of August. Moss married Debra Adams in December 1982, and they had two children: Anne, born in 1989, and David, born in Once he became a father, Moss spent a lot of his time coaching his children's sports teams. They attended North Central High School where he was often seen with his camera at games and events. When David attended DePauw University on a tennis scholarship, Moss photographed every tournament. Unfortunately, on 5 April 2012, Moss's daughter committed suicide at age 22 in their family home. Six weeks later, on 19 May 2012, Ed Moss passed away from a heart attack, of what family and friends believed to be a broken heart from the pain he felt from Anne's death.
