Player Development Initiative Webinar November 23, 2015

What We re Going To Talk About What are the Player Development Initiatives?

Tonight s Topics There are two main aspects currently for the Player Development Initiatives. 1. Small Sided Standards 2. Birth Year Registration These will be the topics we focus on today. 3

1. Small Sided Standards Field Size, Ball Size, Player Count, etc

Small Sided Standards US Youth Soccer defines a small sided game as anything less than 11-a-side. Fields are smaller, as are the goals and the balls, proportionately to age. More touches, direct involvement of players, more movement, more action all leads to more enjoyment 5

US Youth Soccer Small Sided Standards 6

2. Birth Year Registration What is it, and how will it affect me?

Birth Year Registration What is it? US Youth Soccer has mandated that all players be registered by the year of their birth beginning with the seasonal year. This means that if you were born at anytime in a calendar year you will be registered with everyone else in that year. 1

Birth Year Registration Why Change? The decision was made so that the US falls in line with the other 208 countries that register their players by the year of their birth. 1

Birth Year Registration School Year CURRENT WAY All players are registered by seasonal year. August 1 st July 31 st 1

Birth Year Registration Birth Year BEGINNING All players will be registered by birth year. January 1 st December 31 st 1

Birth Year Registration When? US Soccer is mandating the change take place beginning with the season, with encouraged early adoption of best practices in the seasonal year. 1

Birth Year Registration When? US Youth Soccer, and it s state associations will be making the change beginning with the seasonal year. 1

Birth Year Registration How to Implement If your club uses our Affinity system to register players and form teams, your players will simply be placed automatically into their new age group. 2

Frequently Asked Questions Let s ask the obvious ones first

Birth Year Registration General FAQs Q: Why can t rec and competitive registration be done differently? A: Currently there is no universal definition of what separates the two. With this lack of current definition, moving to a universal method of registering players avoids confusion. The Federation has mandated that all players will be registered by the calendar year of their birth. 2

Birth Year Registration General FAQs Q: Can children still play with their classmates? A: This depends on how your club forms their teams. Currently a lot of factors prevent classmates from playing with each other. Another factor is the difference of school year cut-off around the country varies state-by-state. The placement of individual players on specific teams will remain a function of the local club and league to help find the players the best environment for their development. 2

Birth Year Registration General FAQs Q: How can teams and players continue to be registered together? A: Players still have the ability to play up with older team mates. Being able to play up also allows players to compete in a more challenging environment, which can help them develop. Remember though, if you have players that play up, your team is still the age of the oldest member of that team. 2

Birth Year Registration General FAQs Q: Can players play up OR play down? A: Players always have the opportunity to play up if it is developmentally appropriate for that player. Players are NOT permitted to play down with team mates in a younger age group, based on birth year. 2

Birth Year Registration General FAQs Q: How do I determine birth year age group? A: The simplest way to determine your age group is to start the year that the season ends in. Ex: the season would use Players would be registered based on their age in Simply subtract the birth year from the year the season ends. Ex: season minus 2003 (birth year) = 14 = U14 age group season minus 2016 (birth year) = 7 = U7 age group season minus 1999 (birth year) = 18 = U18 age group 2

Birth Year Registration General FAQs 2

Frequently Asked Questions Your questions

Birth Year Registration Your FAQs Q: How will this affect the U15 age group players when some will still be in 8 th grade? A: This is the 2002 birth year team. We will be offering a Timbers & Thorns U15 league for those players that are in that birth year. We will not be allowing U15 players to play down on U14 teams. NOTE: the Fall league will be a non-qualifying league for State Cup for the U15 age group. 2

Birth Year Registration Your FAQs Q: Will OYSA still be doing 8 th grade waivers? A: The waiver system was a method of allowing players to play down a level from U15 to U14. It was designed so that players who are U15 by age, but still in 8 th grade, could play on a U14 team during the fall season. With birth year registration there will now be significantly more U15 players in 8 th grade than there was before. OYSA will not be offering 8 th grade waivers beginning with the seasonal year. 3

Birth Year Registration Your FAQs Q: How will this affect the U18 age group players when some will be out of high school? A: This is the 1999 birth year team. Our league offerings will include U19 teams to allow those players who have not left for college a place to play. We will not be allowing those players to play down on the U18 teams. 3

Birth Year Registration Your FAQs Q: What if the league we play in is formed differently than the way we form teams? A: We encourage all clubs to communicate with the leagues they are playing in. The league determines what teams are eligible to play in their competition. The Timbers and Thorns Leagues will define age groups by calendar year beginning with the seasonal year. You can form your teams however you choose, but the team will be designated at the age of it s oldest player. 3

What Can I Do To Prepare? Being ready for the change

What Can I Do To Prepare? There are several things you can do to be ready for the change to birth year registration. 1. Support the initiatives as a club 2. Have patience 3. Stick to the facts 4. Communicate with key stakeholders 5. Do your best 6. Encourage and educate parents 3
