2 mean green storylines The Mean Green soccer program is entering its 22nd year as a varsity Division I sport. All 21 years have been winning seasons under the helm of head coach John Hedlund. Hedlund and the program are on the cusp of a milestone. Hedlund has led the Mean Green to a record. With one more win, Hedlund would join a select group of coaches that have won 300 career games. Rachel Holden was named to the preseason All-Conference USA team for the third straight year. Holden is entering her senior year after scoring 12 goals as a junior and being named C-USA Co-Offensive Player of the Year. She was also named offensive player of the year as a freshman. North Texas was picked to finish first in Conference USA, according to a coaches poll, after capturing the regular-season title and the conference championship trophy last year. The Mean Green is in its fourth year as a member of Conference USA, and this is the first time that the Mean Green was picked to finish first. North Texas is coming off a record-breaking season where the Mean Green won 19 games, captured the regular-season and conference tournament titles and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. North Texas lost seven starters from that team but returns a strong nucleus of players, including first-team all-conference honoree Rachel Holden and all-freshmen team honoree Taylor Torres. After a standout junior season, Rachel Holden was ranked in TopDrawerSoccer s Preseason Top 100 Players. Holden led the team in goals and points last year and was named first-team all-conference and firstteam all-region. Brooke Bradley will be a new face in goal for the Mean Green after Jackie Kerestine capped her record-setting career last year. The sophomore earned her first start in dramatic fashion: she played in the NCAA game against Texas Tech last year after Kerestine went down with an injury. Three Mean Green players played over the summer for one of the top amateur women s soccer leagues in the country. Brooke Bradley, Alexsis Cable and Taylor Torres all played for the Women s Premier Soccer League. Bradley and Cable played for the Texas Spurs FC, while Torres stayed local with the FC Dallas Women. The FC Dallas Women won the southwest region, while the Texas Spurs finished in second. Three of the Mean Green s 10 newcomers are transfers from Division I schools. Hailey Sutton is going to spend her fourth year at North Texas after playing for three years at Texas A&M Corpus Christi. Katie Gernsbacher played two years at Texas before moving north, and Lauryn Bruffett spent one year at Mississippi State. Madeline Guderian is one of the seven freshmen on the Mean Green roster. She is the younger sister of Alison Guderian, who was a four-year letterwinner for the Mean Green from from Taylor Torres and her sister, Bobbie Gutierrez, both play collegiate soccer in Denton. Taylor plays for North Texas, while Bobbie is a senior defender for the TWU Pioneers. North Texas advanced to its fourth straight conference finals last year in the combined two leagues (Sun Belt and Conference USA). All together, North Texas has advanced to 11 conference championships. North Texas went 5-0 last year at home against C-USA opponents and extended its home winning streak against conference opponents to 32 games, which is the second longest in the nation. The Mean Green has not lost a home conference game since Oct. 31 of North Texas finished its regular season with a home record of 8-1. The Mean Green s overall home record in program history is (.872) and (.840) in 10 years at the Mean Green Soccer Complex. Since the program s birth in 1995, the Mean Green has never had a losing season. North Texas 20-year combined record stands at a.709 winning percentage. The ultimate goal of the program, North Texas has advanced to the NCAA Tournament four times , 2005, 2012 and Only five Division I schools in the state of Texas (of 20) have more NCAA Tournament appearances. In C-USA, only Charlotte has more tourney bids. mean green quick shots North Texas is in season-opening games. The Mean Green is in its last 10 season-opening games. North Texas has not lost a season-opening game since a 2-0 loss to Eastern Illinois in North Texas has never lost a home season opener. North Texas is when it starts its season at home. North Texas is 1-0 in the series against Incarnate Word. The Mean Green defeated IW, 2-0, last year on the road. Taylor Torres scored the gamewinnin goal, the first of her career. North Texas is in the series against Oral Roberts. The Mean Green started slow against the Golden Eagles but Karla Pineda came through with the gamewinner in the 74th minute. North Texas is bringing back 4 starters from last year s record-breaking season. North Texas has added 10 newcomers to its roster: 7 freshmen and 3 transfers. The Mean Green soccer program and John Hedlund are aiming for win No Hedlund has won 299 games in 21 years at North Texas. Rachel Holden is currently ranked tied for 10th on the Mean Green career goal list with 28 goals. She would need to score 12 more goals to move into the top 5. Despite losing seven starters, much of the Mean Green s offensive power remains. More than half of the team s goals last year were scored by current players. Nineteen of the Mean Green s 39 goals were scored by forwards Rachel Holden, Taylor Torres and Marchelle Davis.
